A General Framework for Relative Equilibria in the Symmetric Full Gravitational N-Body Problem

We present a method to determine admissible configurations that lead to relative equilibria in the full gravitational N-body problem. The method exploits the SO(3) symmetry by working with its fundamental invariants and does not rely on restrictive assumptions about mass distributions or on truncating the gravitational potential. As a result, it yields necessary conditions that apply to arbitrary rigid-body configurations. This work is presented in two parts. In the first (this) part, we assume every body is axisymmetric to give a clear, pedagogical exposition of the approach; in a forthcoming paper, we remove that restriction and treat general triaxial bodies (the method remains valid, but the number of variables increases). As an illustration, we systematically recover all known relative-equilibrium families for the two-body problem consisting of one sphere and one axisymmetric body, confirm earlier results in the literature, and derive new necessary conditions for certain configurations, including additional constraints for the arrow and non-Lagrangian types. In the special case of a sphere and an axisymmetric body, we also obtain sufficient conditions for relative equilibria under a monotonicity assumption on the potential.

Spherical singularities in compactified Ruijsenaars--Schneider systems

We investigate certain Liouville integrable systems constructed earlier via reduction of the quasi-Hamiltonian double of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$. These systems live on compact connected symplectic manifolds of dimension $2(n-1)$ and can be interpreted as compactified trigonometric Ruijsenaars--Schneider systems. Depending on the value of a parameter $0<y< π$, they arise in two drastically different forms: in type (i) these are toric systems, while in the type (ii) cases they possess globally continuous action variables that generate a Hamiltonian torus action (only) on a dense open subset of the phase space. The principal goal of the paper is to study those fibers of the action map (alias the $\mathbb{T}^{n-1}$ momentum map) which are contained in the complement of the domain of the densely defined torus action occurring in the type (ii) cases. We demonstrate that all such `singular fibers' are smooth connected isotropic submanifolds. We also work out a model of the fibers as quotient spaces of certain subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ with respect to an action of another subgroup. The general results are exemplified by determining the vertices of the polytope filled by the action variables in the simplest type (ii) cases that appear for any $n\geq 4$ with $π/(n-1) <y < π/(n-2)$, and proving that the fibers over the `singular vertices' are diffeomorphic to $S^3 \simeq \mathrm{SU}(2)$ in these cases. In this way, our findings enrich the set of examples of Liouville integrable systems with spherical singularities.

Symmetry Reduction by Lifting for Maps

We study diffeomorphisms that have one-parameter families of continuous symmetries. For general maps, in contrast to the symplectic case, existence of a symmetry no longer implies existence of an invariant. Conversely, a map with an invariant need not have a symmetry. We show that when a symmetry flow has a global Poincaré section there are coordinates in which the map takes a reduced, skew-product form, and hence allows for reduction of dimensionality. We show that the reduction of a volume-preserving map again is volume preserving. Finally we sharpen the Noether theorem for symplectic maps. A number of illustrative examples are discussed and the method is compared with traditional reduction techniques.

Resonances and Twist in Volume-Preserving Mappings

The phase space of an integrable, volume-preserving map with one action and $d$ angles is foliated by a one-parameter family of $d$-dimensional invariant tori. Perturbations of such a system may lead to chaotic dynamics and transport. We show that near a rank-one, resonant torus these mappings can be reduced to volume-preserving "standard maps." These have twist only when the image of the frequency map crosses the resonance curve transversely. We show that these maps can be approximated---using averaging theory---by the usual area-preserving twist or nontwist standard maps. The twist condition appropriate for the volume-preserving setting is shown to be distinct from the nondegeneracy condition used in (volume-preserving) KAM theory.

Experimental demonstration of classical Hamiltonian monodromy in the 1:1:2 resonant elastic pendulum

The 1:1:2 resonant elastic pendulum is a simple classical system that displays the phenomenon known as Hamiltonian monodromy. With suitable initial conditions, the system oscillates between nearly pure springing and nearly pure elliptical-swinging motions, with sequential major axes displaying a stepwise precession. The physical consequence of monodromy is that this stepwise precession is given by a smooth but multivalued function of the constants of motion. We experimentally explore this multivalued behavior. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of classical monodromy.

Nilpotent normal form for divergence-free vector fields and volume-preserving maps

We study the normal forms for incompressible flows and maps in the neighborhood of an equilibrium or fixed point with a triple eigenvalue. We prove that when a divergence free vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ has nilpotent linearization with maximal Jordan block then, to arbitrary degree, coordinates can be chosen so that the nonlinear terms occur as a single function of two variables in the third component. The analogue for volume-preserving diffeomorphisms gives an optimal normal form in which the truncation of the normal form at any degree gives an exactly volume-preserving map whose inverse is also polynomial inverse with the same degree.

Normal Forms for Symplectic Maps with Twist Singularities

We derive a normal form for a near-integrable, four-dimensional symplectic map with a fold or cusp singularity in its frequency mapping. The normal form is obtained for when the frequency is near a resonance and the mapping is approximately given by the time-$T$ mapping of a two-degree-of freedom Hamiltonian flow. Consequently there is an energy-like invariant. The fold Hamiltonian is similar to the well-studied, one-degree-of freedom case but is essentially nonintegrable when the direction of the singular curve in action does not coincide with curves of the resonance module. We show that many familiar features, such as multiple island chains and reconnecting invariant manifolds, are retained even in this case. The cusp Hamiltonian has an essential coupling between its two degrees of freedom even when the singular set is aligned with the resonance module. Using averaging, we approximately reduced this case to one degree of freedom as well. The resulting Hamiltonian and its perturbation with small cusp-angle is analyzed in detail.

Spectra of Sol-manifolds: arithmetic and quantum monodromy

The spectral problem of three-dimensional manifolds M_A admitting Sol-geometry in Thurston's sense is investigated. Topologically M_A are torus bundles over a circle with a unimodular hyperbolic gluing map A. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operators are described in terms of the modified Mathieu functions. It is shown that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues are the same for generic values of the parameters in the metric and are directly related to the number of representations of an integer by a given indefinite binary quadratic form. As a result the spectral statistics is shown to disagree with the Berry-Tabor conjecture. The topological nature of the monodromy for both classical and quantum systems on Sol-manifolds is demonstrated.

On asymptotically equivalent shallow water wave equations

The integrable 3rd-order Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation emerges uniquely at linear order in the asymptotic expansion for unidirectional shallow water waves. However, at quadratic order, this asymptotic expansion produces an entire {\it family} of shallow water wave equations that are asymptotically equivalent to each other, under a group of nonlinear, nonlocal, normal-form transformations introduced by Kodama in combination with the application of the Helmholtz-operator. These Kodama-Helmholtz transformations are used to present connections between shallow water waves, the integrable 5th-order Korteweg-de Vries equation, and a generalization of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation that contains an additional integrable case. The dispersion relation of the full water wave problem and any equation in this family agree to 5th order. The travelling wave solutions of the CH equation are shown to agree to 5th order with the exact solution.

Monodromy in the resonant swing spring

This paper shows that an integrable approximation of the spring pendulum, when tuned to be in $1:1:2$ resonance, has monodromy. The stepwise precession angle of the swing plane of the resonant spring pendulum is shown to be a rotation number of the integrable approximation. Due to the monodromy, this rotation number is not a globally defined function of the integrals. In fact at lowest order it is given by $\arg(a+ib)$ where $a$ and $b$ are functions of the integrals. The resonant swing spring is therefore a system where monodromy has easily observed physical consequences.

Generalizations of the Störmer Problem for Dust Grain Orbits

We consider the generalized Störmer Problem that includes the electromagnetic and gravitational forces on a charged dust grain near a planet. For dust grains a typical charge to mass ratio is such that neither force can be neglected. Including the gravitational force gives rise to stable circular orbits that encircle that plane entirely above/below the equatorial plane. The effects of the different forces are discussed in detail. A modified 3rd Kepler's law is found and analyzed for dust grains.

Homoclinic Bifurcations for the Henon Map

Chaotic dynamics can be effectively studied by continuation from an anti-integrable limit. We use this limit to assign global symbols to orbits and use continuation from the limit to study their bifurcations. We find a bound on the parameter range for which the Henon map exhibits a complete binary horseshoe as well as a subshift of finite type. We classify homoclinic bifurcations, and study those for the area preserving case in detail. Simple forcing relations between homoclinic orbits are established. We show that a symmetry of the map gives rise to constraints on certain sequences of homoclinic bifurcations. Our numerical studies also identify the bifurcations that bound intervals on which the topological entropy is apparently constant.

Generic Twistless Bifurcations

We show that in the neighborhood of the tripling bifurcation of a periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian flow or of a fixed point of an area preserving map, there is generically a bifurcation that creates a ``twistless'' torus. At this bifurcation, the twist, which is the derivative of the rotation number with respect to the action, vanishes. The twistless torus moves outward after it is created, and eventually collides with the saddle-center bifurcation that creates the period three orbits. The existence of the twistless bifurcation is responsible for the breakdown of the nondegeneracy condition required in the proof of the KAM theorem for flows or the Moser twist theorem for maps. When the twistless torus has a rational rotation number, there are typically reconnection bifurcations of periodic orbits with that rotation number.

Elliptic Quantum Billiard

The exact and semiclassical quantum mechanics of the elliptic billiard is investigated. The classical system is integrable and exhibits a separatrix, dividing the phasespace into regions of oscillatory and rotational motion. The classical separability carries over to quantum mechanics, and the Schrödinger equation is shown to be equivalent to the spheroidal wave equation. The quantum eigenvalues show a clear pattern when transformed into the classical action space. The implication of the separatrix on the wave functions is illustrated. A uniform WKB quantization taking into account complex orbits is shown to be adequate for the semiclassical quantization in the presence of a separatrix. The pattern of states in classical action space is nicely explained by this quantization procedure. We extract an effective Maslov phase varying smoothly on the energy surface, which is used to modify the Berry-Tabor trace formula, resulting in a summation over non-periodic orbits. This modified trace formula produces the correct number of states, even close to the separatrix. The Fourier transform of the density of states is explained in terms of classical orbits, and the amplitude and form of the different kinds of peaks is analytically calculated.

Symbolic Dynamics and Periodic Orbits for the Cardioid Billiard

The periodic orbits of the strongly chaotic cardioid billiard are studied by introducing a binary symbolic dynamics. The corresponding partition is mapped to a topological well-ordered symbol plane. In the symbol plane the pruning front is obtained from orbits running either into or through the cusp. We show that all periodic orbits correspond to maxima of the Lagrangian and give a complete list up to code length 15. The symmetry reduction is done on the level of the symbol sequences and the periodic orbits are classified using symmetry lines. We show that there exists an infinite number of families of periodic orbits accumulating in length and that all other families of geometrically short periodic orbits eventually get pruned. All these orbits are related to finite orbits starting and ending in the cusp. We obtain an analytical estimate of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and find good agreement with the numerically calculated value and the one obtained by averaging periodic orbits. Furthermore the statistical properties of periodic orbits are investigated.
