Dynamical scaling and isotope effect in temporal evolution of mesoscopic structure during hydration of cement

The evolution of mesoscopic structure for cement-water mixtures turning into colloidal gels remains far from being understood. Recent neutron scattering investigations (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 255704 (2004); Phys. Rev. B. 72, 224208 (2005); Phys. Rev. B. 82, 064203 (2010)),, reveal the role of hydrogen bond in temporal evolution of the mesoscopic structure during hydration of cement which is the most consumed synthetic material. The present neutron scattering investigation on hydration of cement with a mixture of light and heavy water points to incomprehensibility of the temporal evolution of the mesoscopic structure in terms of earlier observations on hydration with pure light or heavy water. Unlike in the case of hydration with light water, disagreement has been observed with the hypothesis of dynamical scaling for hydration of cement with a mixture of the two types of water. The dynamics of evolution of the mesoscopic structure has been observed to be nonlinear in regard to the composition of hydration medium.

Neutron optical beam splitter from holographically structured nanoparticle-polymer composites

We report a breakthrough in the search for versatile diffractive elements for cold neutrons. Nanoparticles are spatially arranged by holographical means in a photopolymer. These grating structures show remarkably efficient diffraction of cold neutrons up to about 50% for effective thicknesses of only 200 micron. They open up a profound perspective for next generation neutron-optical devices with the capability to tune or modulate the neutron diffraction efficiency.

Neutron-optical gratings from nanoparticle-polymer composites

The preparation of neutron-optical phase gratings with light-optical holography is reviewed. We compare the relevant concepts of i) Kogelnik's theory for Bragg diffraction of light by thick volume gratings, which can be used to analyze holographic gratings with both light and neutrons, and ii) the dynamical theory of neutron diffraction. Without going into mathematical detail, we intend to illuminate their correspondence. The findings are illustrated by analyzing data obtained from reconstruction of nanoparticle holographic gratings with both light and neutrons.

New Aspects of Geometric Phases in Experiments with polarized Neutrons

Geometric phase phenomena in single neutrons have been observed in polarimeter and interferometer experiments. Interacting with static and time dependent magnetic fields, the state vectors acquire a geometric phase tied to the evolution within spin subspace. In a polarimeter experiment the non-additivity of quantum phases for mixed spin input states is observed. In a Si perfect-crystal interferometer experiment appearance of geometric phases, induced by interaction with an oscillating magnetic field, is verified. The total system is characterized by an entangled state, consisting of neutron and radiation fields, governed by a Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. In addition, the influence of the geometric phase on a Bell measurement, expressed by the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, is studied. It is demonstrated that the effect of geometric phase can be balanced by an appropriate change of Bell angles.

Geometric Phase in Entangled Systems: A Single-Neutron Interferometer Experiment

The influence of the geometric phase on a Bell measurement, as proposed by Bertlmann et al. in [Phys. Rev. A 69, 032112 (2004)], and expressed by the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, has been observed for a spin-path entangled neutron state in an interferometric setup. It is experimentally demonstrated that the effect of geometric phase can be balanced by a change in Bell angles. The geometric phase is acquired during a time dependent interaction with two radio-frequency (rf) fields. Two schemes, polar and azimuthal adjustment of the Bell angles, are realized and analyzed in detail. The former scheme, yields a sinusoidal oscillation of the correlation function S, dependent on the geometric phase, such that it varies in the range between 2 and 2\sqrt{2} and, therefore, always exceeds the boundary value 2 between quantum mechanic and noncontextual theories. The latter scheme results in a constant, maximal violation of the Bell-like-CHSH inequality, where S remains 2\sqrt2 for all settings of the geometric phase.

Experimental test of quantum contextuality in neutron interferometry

We performed an experimental test of the Kochen-Specker theorem based on an inequality derived from the Peres-Mermin proof, using spin-path (momentum) entanglement in a single neutron system. Following the strategy proposed by Cabello et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 130404 (2008)], a Bell-like state was generated and three expectation values were determined. The observed violation 2.291 +/- 0.008 > 1 clearly shows that quantum mechanical predictions cannot be reproduced by noncontextual hidden variables theories.

Experimental demonstration of the stability of Berry's phase for a spin-1/2 particle

The geometric phase has been proposed as a candidate for noise resilient coherent manipulation of fragile quantum systems. Since it is determined only by the path of the quantum state, the presence of noise fluctuations affects the geometric phase in a different way than the dynamical phase. We have experimentally tested the robustness of Berry's geometric phase for spin-1/2 particles in a cyclically varying magnetic field. Using trapped polarized ultra-cold neutrons it is demonstrated that the geometric phase contributions to dephasing due to adiabatic field fluctuations vanish for long evolution times.

Coherent energy manipulation in single-neutron interferometry

We have observed the stationary interference oscillations of a triple-entangled neutron state in an interferometric experiment. Time-dependent interaction with two radio-frequency (rf) fields enables coherent manipulation of an energy degree of freedom in a single neutron. The system is characterized by a multiply entangled state governed by a Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. The experimental results confirm coherence of the manipulation as well as the validity of the description.

New intensity and visibility aspects of a double loop neutron interferometer

Various phase shifters and absorbers can be put into the arms of a double loop neutron interferometer. The mean intensity levels of the forward and diffracted beams behind an empty four plate interferometer of this type have been calculated. It is shown that the intensities in the forward and diffracted direction can be made equal using certain absorbers. In this case the interferometer can be regarded as a 50/50 beam splitter. Furthermore the visibilities of single and double loop interferometers are compared to each other by varying the transmission in the first loop using different absorbers. It can be shown that the visibility becomes exactly 1 using a phase shifter in the second loop. In this case the phase shifter in the second loop must be strongly correlated to the transmission coefficient of the absorber in the first loop. Using such a device homodyne-like measurements of very weak signals should become possible.

Observation of off-diagonal geometric phase in polarized neutron interferometer experiments

Off-diagonal geometric phases acquired in the evolution of a spin-1/2 system have been investigated by means of a polarized neutron interferometer. Final counts with and without polarization analysis enable us to observe simultaneously the off-diagonal and diagonal geometric phases in two detectors. We have quantitatively measured the off-diagonal geometric phase for noncyclic evolutions, confirming the theoretical predictions. We discuss the significance of our experiment in terms of geometric phases (both diagonal and off-diagonal) and in terms of the quantum erasing phenomenon.

Reconstruction of the spin state

System of 1/2 spin particles is observed repeatedly using Stern-Gerlach apparatuses with rotated orientations. Synthesis of such non-commuting observables is analyzed using maximum likelihood estimation as an example of quantum state reconstruction. Repeated incompatible observations represent a new generalized measurement. This idealized scheme will serve for analysis of future experiments in neutron and quantum optics.

Quantum tomography as normalization of incompatible observations

Quantum states are successfully reconstructed using the maximum likelihood estimation on the subspace where the measured projectors reproduce the identity operator. Reconstruction corresponds to normalization of incompatible observations. The proposed approach handles the noisy data corresponding to realistic incomplete observation with finite resolution.
