Recent results from the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

Within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge the ghost and gluon propagators are determined from a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation showing both gluon and heavy quark confinement. The continuum results are in good agreement with lattice data. The ghost form factor is identified as the dielectric function of the Yang--Mills vacuum and the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario is shown to imply the dual Meissner effect. The topological susceptibility is calculated.

Slavnov-Taylor identities in Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory

The Slavnov-Taylor identities of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory are derived from the (standard, second order) functional formalism. It is shown how these identities form closed sets from which one can in principle fully determine the Green's functions involving the temporal component of the gauge field without approximation, given appropriate input.

Quarks in Coulomb gauge perturbation theory

Coulomb gauge quantum chromodynamics within the first order functional formalism is considered. The quark contributions to the Dyson-Schwinger equations are derived and one-loop perturbative results for the two-point functions are presented.

Hamiltonian Approach to 1+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

We study the Hamiltonian approach to 1+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, considering both the pure Coulomb gauge and the gauge where in addition the remaining constant gauge field is restricted to the Cartan algebra. We evaluate the corresponding Faddeev-Popov determinants, resolve Gauss' law and derive the Hamiltonians, which differ in both gauges due to additional zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel in the pure Coulomb gauge. By Gauss' law the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel constrain the physical wave functionals to zero colour charge states. We solve the Schroedinger equation in the pure Coulomb gauge and determine the vacuum wave functional. The gluon and ghost propagators and the static colour Coulomb potential are calculated in the first Gribov region as well as in the fundamental modular region, and Gribov copy effects are studied. We explicitly demonstrate that the Dyson-Schwinger equations do not specify the Gribov region while the propagators and vertices do depend on the Gribov region chosen. In this sense, the Dyson-Schwinger equations alone do not provide the full non-abelian quantum gauge theory, but subsidiary conditions must be required. Implications of Gribov copy effects for lattice calculations of the infrared behaviour of gauge-fixed propagators are discussed. We compute the ghost-gluon vertex and provide a sensible truncation of Dyson-Schwinger equations. Approximations of the variational approach to the 3+1 dimensional theory are checked by comparison to the 1+1 dimensional case.

Dielectric function of the QCD vacuum

It is shown that the inverse of the ghost form factor in the Hamilton approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge can be interpreted as the color dielectric function of the QCD vacuum. Furthermore the horizon condition to the ghost form factor implies that in the infrared the QCD vacuum is a perfect color diaelectric medium and therefore a dual superconductor. The dielectric function is explicitly calculated within a previously developed variational approach, using a specific ansatz for the vacuum wave functional.

Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory in the Hamiltonian approach

Within the Hamiltonian approach in Coulomb gauge the ghost and gluon propagators are determined from a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation showing both gluon and heavy quark confinement. The continuum results are in good agreement with lattice data. The ghost form factor is identified as the dielectric function of the Yang-Mills vacuum and a connection between the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario and the dual Meissner effect is established. The topological susceptibility is calculated.

Subcritical solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation in the Coulomb gauge

In the Hamiltonian approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory, the functional Schroedinger equation is solved variationally resulting in a set of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations. These equations are solved self-consistently in the subcritical regime defined by infrared finite form factors. It is shown that the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the Coulomb form factor fails to have a solution in the critical regime where all form factors have infrared divergent power laws.

Completing Continuum Coulomb Gauge in the Functional Formalism

It is argued that within the continuum functional formalism, there is no need to supply a further (spatially independent) gauge constraint to complete the Coulomb gauge of Yang-Mills theory. It is shown explicitly that a natural completion of the gauge-fixing leads to a contradiction with the perturbative renormalizability of the theory.

The Yang-Mills Vacuum in Coulomb Gauge in D=2+1 Dimensions

The variational approach to the Hamilton formulation of Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge developed by the present authors previously is applied to Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions and is confronted with the existing lattice data. We show that the resulting Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) yield consistent solutions in 2+1 dimensions only for infrared divergent ghost form factor and gluon energy. The obtained numerical solutions of the DSE reproduce the analytic infrared results and are in satisfactory agreement with the existing lattice date in the whole momentum range.

Coulomb gauge Green functions and Gribov copies in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

We reconsider the lattice measurement of Green functions in Coulomb gauge, both in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions, using an improved gauge fixing scheme. The influence of Gribov copies is examined and we find clear indications that Green functions are more strongly affected than previously assumed, in particular for low momenta. Qualitatively, our improved lattice results in the infra-red compare more favourably with recent continuum calculations in the Hamiltonian approach.

Hamiltonian approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills Theory

The vacuum wave functional of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is determined within the variational principle and used to calculate various Green functions and observables. The results show that heavy quarks are confined by a linearly rising potential and gluons cannot propagate over large distances. The 't Hooft loop shows a perimeter law and thus also indicates confinement.

Color Screening, Casimir Scaling, and Domain Structure in G(2) and SU(N) Gauge Theories

We argue that screening of higher-representation color charges by gluons implies a domain structure in the vacuum state of non-abelian gauge theories, with the color magnetic flux in each domain quantized in units corresponding to the gauge group center. Casimir scaling of string tensions at intermediate distances results from random spatial variations in the color magnetic flux within each domain. The exceptional G(2) gauge group is an example rather than an exception to this picture, although for G(2) there is only one type of vacuum domain, corresponding to the single element of the gauge group center. We present some numerical results for G(2) intermediate string tensions and Polyakov lines, as well as results for certain gauge-dependent projected quantities. In this context, we discuss critically the idea of projecting link variables to a subgroup of the gauge group. It is argued that such projections are useful only when the representation-dependence of the string tension, at some distance scale, is given by the representation of the subgroup.

The 't Hooft loop in the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

The spatial 't Hooft loop, which is a disorder parameter dual to the temporal Wilson loop, is calculated using the nonperturbative Yang-Mills vacuum wave functional determined previously by a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation in Coulomb gauge. It is shown, that this wave functional yields indeed a perimeter law for large spatial 't Hooft loops signaling confinement.

Confining Solution of the Dyson-Schwinger Equations in Coulomb Gauge

The Dyson-Schwinger equations arising from minimizing the vacuum energy density in the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge are solved numerically. A new solution is presented which gives rise to a strictly linearly rising static quark potential and whose existence was previously observed in the infrared analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations. For the new solution we also present the static quark potential and calculate the running coupling constant from the ghost-gluon vertex.

Dyson-Schwinger Equations and Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is considered within the first order formalism. It is shown that the action is invariant under both the standard BRS transform and an additional component. The Ward-Takahashi identity arising from this non-standard transform is shown to be automatically satisfied by the equations of motion.

Center Vortices and Ghosts

Assuming that center vortices are the confining gauge field configurations, we argue that in gauges that are sensitive to the confining center vortex degrees of freedom, and where the latter lie on the Gribov horizon, the corresponding ghost form factor is infrared divergent. Furthermore, this infrared divergence disappears when center vortices are removed from the Yang-Mills ensemble. On the other hand, for gauge conditions which are insensitive to center vortex degrees of freedom, the ghost form factor is infrared finite and does not change (qualitatively) when center vortices are removed. Evidence for our observation is provided from lattice calculations.

A gauge invariant cluster algorithm for the Ising spin glass

The frustrated Ising model in two dimensions is revisited. The frustration is quantified in terms of the number of non-trivial plaquettes which is invariant under the Nishimori gauge symmetry. The exact ground state energy is calculated using Edmond's algorithm. A novel cluster algorithm is designed which treats gauge equivalent spin glasses on equal footing and allows for efficient simulations near criticality. As a first application, the specific heat near criticality is investigated.
