Nucleon Structure Functions within a Chiral Soliton Model

We study nucleon structure functions within the bosonized Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model where the nucleon emerges as a chiral soliton. We discuss the model predictions on the Gottfried sum rule for electron--nucleon scattering. A comparison with a low--scale parametrization shows that the model reproduces the gross features of the empirical structure functions. We also compute the leading twist contributions of the polarized structure functions $g_{1}(x)$ and $g_{2}(x)$ in this model. We compare the model predictions on these structure functions with data from the E143 experiment by GLAP evolving them appropriately.

Resolution of Gauss' law in Yang-Mills theory by Gauge Invariant Projection: Topology and Magnetic Monopoles

An efficient way of resolving Gauss' law in Yang-Mills theory is presented by starting from the projected gauge invariant partition function and integrating out one spatial field variable. In this way one obtains immediately the description in terms of unconstrained gauge invariant variables which was previously obtained by explicitly resolving Gauss' law in a modified axial gauge. In this gauge, which is a variant of 't Hooft's Abelian gauges, magnetic monopoles occur. It is shown how the Pontryagin index of the gauge field is related to the magnetic charges. It turns out that the magnetic monopoles are sufficient to account for the non-trivial topological structure of the theory.

Diquark confinement in an extended NJL model

In a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model supplemented with an infrared cutoff in addition to the ultraviolet cutoff we study the issue whether diquarks are confined when the model is extended beyond the rainbow-ladder approximation. The gap equation, obtained in a truncation scheme motivated via a nontrivial quark-gluon vertex function, is solved to determine the constituent quark mass if chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken. In a second step, the Bethe-Salpeter equations for mesons and diquarks beyond ladder approximation are derived, taking care to preserve Goldstone's theorem in the pion channel. While the obtained masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons are only moderately shifted compared to the values in ladder approximation, we observe that scalar diquarks disappear from the physical spectrum and therefore are confined. For axialvector diquarks we observe indications, that the same mechanism may also work, but the NJL model allows no conclusive answer in this channel.

Asymptotic freedom in a scalar field theory on the lattice

An alternative model to the trivial $ϕ^4$-theory of the standard model of weak interactions is suggested, which embodies the Higgs-mechanism, but is free of the conceptual problems of standard $ϕ^4$-theory. We propose a N-component, O(N)-symmetric scalar field theory, which is originally defined on the lattice. The model can be motivated from SU(2) gauge theory. Thereby the scalar field arises as a gauge invariant degree of freedom. The scalar lattice model is analytically solved in the large N limit. The continuum limit is approached via an asymptotically free scaling. The renormalized theory evades triviality, and furthermore gives rise to a dynamically formed mass of the scalar particle.

Faddeev equation for heavy baryons in the quark-diquark picture

We describe heavy baryons as bound states of a quark and a diquark. For this purpose we derive the Faddeev equation for baryons containing a single heavy quark from a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type of model which is appropriately extended to include also heavy quarks. The latter are treated in the heavy mass limit. The heavy baryon Faddeev equation is then solved using a static approximation for the exchanged quark.

Nucleon Form Factors in a Covariant Diquark-Quark Model

In a model where constituent quarks and diquarks interact through quark exchange the Bethe-Salpeter equation in ladder approximation for the nucleon is solved. Quark and diquark confinement is effectively parametrized by choosing appropriately modified propagators. The coupling to external currents is implemented via nontrivial vertex functions for quarks and diquarks to ensure gauge invariance at the constituent level. Nucleon matrix elements are evaluated in a generalised impulse approximation, and electromagnetic, pionic and axial form factors are calculated.

Polarized Nucleon Structure Functions within a Chiral Soliton Model

We study polarized-spin structure functions of the nucleon within the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model where the nucleon emerges as a chiral soliton. We present the electromagnetic polarized structure functions, $g_{1}(x)$ and $g_{2}(x)$ for $ep$ scattering and discuss various sum rules in the valence quark approximation. This approximation is justified because in this model axial properties of the nucleon are dominated by their valence quark contributions. We find that these structure functions are well localized in the interval $0\le x \le1$. We compare the model predictions on the polarized structure functions with data from the E143 experiment by evolving them from the scale characteristic of the NJL-model to the scale of the data. Additionally a comparison is made with parameterized data at a momentum scale commensurate with the model calculation.

Nucleon Structure Functions from a Chiral Soliton

Nucleon structure functions are studied within the chiral soliton approach to the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The valence quark approximation is employed which is justified for moderate constituent quark masses ($\sim$ 400 MeV) as the contribution of the valence quark level dominates the predictions of nucleon properties. As examples the unpolarized structure functions for the $νp$ and ${\bar ν}p$ scattering and the structure functions entering the Gottfried sum rule are discussed. For the latter the model prediction is found to reasonably well agree with a corresponding low-scale parametrization of the empirical data.

Baryon Structure in a Covariant Diquark-Quark Model

The baryon structure is investigated in a covariant diquark-quark model. In this approach baryons emerge as relativistic bound states of a constituent quark and a $0^{+}$ or $1^{+}$ diquark. After solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation for the scalar diquark quark system in ladder approximation we couple various external currents to the constituents of the baryon to probe its internal structure. The quark and the diquarks are assumed to be confined which is implemented by suitable choices for the propagators. This leads to nontrivial vertex functions between the constituents and the external current. Baryonic matrix elements are then evaluated to extract observable formfactors.

Monopoles and Strings in Yang-Mills Theories

Yang-Mills theory is studied in a variant of 't Hooft's maximal Abelian gauge. In this gauge magnetic monopoles arise in the Abelian magnetic field. We show, however, that the full (non-Abelian) magnetic field does not possess any monopoles, but rather strings of magnetic fluxes. We argue that these strings are the relevant infrared degrees of freedom. The properties of the magnetic strings which arise from a dilute instanton gas are investigated for the gauge group SU(2).

Strangeness Dependence in Radiative Hyperon Decay Amplitudes

The radiative decays of the $(3/2)^+$ baryons are studied in the three flavor generalization of the Skyrme model. The kaon fields are treated in the slow rotator approach which properly accounts for the observed deviations from the $U$-spin relations for the hyperon magnetic moments. This makes possible a critical discussion of the $U$-spin selection rules for the radiative hyperon decays. The variation of the decay widths with strangeness is studied and a comparison with other treatments of the $SU(3)$ Skyrme model is performed in order to analyze the effects of flavor symmetry breaking.

Baryons as Hybrids of Solitons and Three Quark Bound States

A hybrid model for baryons based on a dynamical interplay between relativistic three--quark bound states and soliton configurations of mesons is constructed. The Bethe-Salpeter equation for diquarks and the Faddeev equation for diquark-quark bound states in the background of a soliton is solved. The results show that baryons are very much like hybrids containing both, solitonic meson clouds and three--quark correlations.

Dual description of QCD

It is demonstrated that the field strength approach to Yang Mills theories has essential features of the dual description. In D=3 this approach is formulated in terms of gauge invariant variables.

Heavy Quark Solitons in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (NJL) is extended to incorporate heavy quark spin-symmetry. In this model baryons containing one heavy quark are analyzed as bound-states of light baryons, represented as chiral solitons, and mesons containing one heavy quark. From related studies in Skyrme type models, the ground-state heavy baryon is known to arise for the heavy meson in a P--wave configuration. In the limit of an infinitely large quark mass the heavy meson wave-function is sharply peaked at the center of the chiral soliton. Therefore the bound state equation reduces to an eigenvalue problem for the coefficients of the operators contained in the most general P-wave {\it ansatz} for the heavy meson. Within the NJL model a novel feature arises from the coupling of the heavy meson to the various light quark states. In this respect conceptual differences to Skyrme model calculations are discovered: The strongest bound state is given by a heavy meson configuration which is completely decoupled from the grand spin zero channel of the light quarks.

Extended NJL Model for light and heavy mesons without q-qbar thresholds

We consider the NJL model as an effective quark theory to describe the interaction which is responsible for the quark flavor dynamics at intermediate energies. In addition to the usual ultraviolet cut-off which is necessary since the model is non-renormalizable, we also introduce an infrared cut-off which drops off the unknown confinement part of the quark interaction, which is believed to be less important for the flavor dynamics. The infrared cut-off eliminates all q-qbar thresholds, which plague the application of the usual NJL model beyond low-energy pion physics. We apply this two-cut-off prescription to the extended NJL model with chiral and heavy quark symmetries proposed recently by us. We find a satisfactoring description even of the heavy mesons with spin/parity J/P = (0+, 1+). Furthermore, the shape-parameters of the Isgur-Wise function are studied as a function of the residual heavy meson mass.

Yang-Mills Theory In Axial Gauge

The Yang-Mills functional integral is studied in an axial variant of 't Hooft's maximal Abelian gauge. In this gauge Gauß' law can be completely resolved resulting in a description in terms of unconstrained variables. Compared to previous work along this line starting with work of Goldstone and Jackiw one ends up here with half as many integration variables, besides a field living in the Cartan subgroup of the gauge group and in D-1 dimension. The latter is of particular relevance for the infrared behaviour of the theory. Keeping only this variable we calculate the Wilson loop and find an area law.

Emergence of the Haar measure in the standard functional integral representation of the Yang-Mills partition function

The conventional path integral expression for the Yang-Mills transition amplitude with flat measure and gauge-fixing built in via the Faddeev-Popov method has been claimed to fall short of guaranteeing gauge invariance in the non-perturbative regime. We show, however, that it yields the gauge invariant partition function where the projection onto gauge invariant wave functions is explicitly performed by integrating over the compact gauge group. In a variant of maximal Abelian gauge the Haar measure arises in the conventional Yang-Mills path integral from the Faddeev-Popov determinant.
