Griffiths-McCoy singularities in the transverse field Ising model on the randomly diluted square lattice

The site-diluted transverse field Ising model in two dimensions is studied with Quantum-Monte-Carlo simulations. Its phase diagram is determined in the transverse field (Gamma) and temperature (T) plane for various (fixed) concentrations (p). The nature of the quantum Griffiths phase at zero temperature is investigated by calculating the distribution of the local zero-frequency susceptibility. It is pointed out that the nature of the Griffiths phase is different for small and large Gamma.

Application of a continous time cluster algorithm to the Two-dimensional Random Quantum Ising Ferromagnet

A cluster algorithm formulated in continuous (imaginary) time is presented for Ising models in a transverse field. It works directly with an infinite number of time-slices in the imaginary time direction, avoiding the necessity to take this limit explicitly. The algorithm is tested at the zero-temperature critical point of the pure two-dimensional (2d) transverse Ising model. Then it is applied to the 2d Ising ferromagnet with random bonds and transverse fields, for which the phase diagram is determined. Finite size scaling at the quantum critical point as well as the study of the quantum Griffiths-McCoy phase indicate that the dynamical critical exponent is infinite as in 1d.

The Random Transverse Ising Spin Chain and Random Walks

We study the critical and off-critical (Griffiths-McCoy) regions of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain by analytical and numerical methods and by phenomenological scaling considerations. Here we extend previous investigations to surface quantities and to the ferromagnetic phase. The surface magnetization of the model is shown to be related to the surviving probability of an adsorbing walk and several critical exponents are exactly calculated. Analyzing the structure of low energy excitations we present a phenomenological theory which explains both the scaling behavior at the critical point and the nature of Griffiths-McCoy singularities in the off-critical regions. In the numerical part of the work we used the free-fermion representation of the model and calculated the critical magnetization profiles, which are found to follow very accurately the conformal predictions for different boundary conditions. In the off-critical regions we demonstrated that the Griffiths-McCoy singularities are characterized by a single, varying exponent, the value of which is related through duality in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases.

Random and aperiodic quantum spin chains: A comparative study

According to the Harris-Luck criterion the relevance of a fluctuating interaction at the critical point is connected to the value of the fluctuation exponent omega. Here we consider different types of relevant fluctuations in the quantum Ising chain and investigate the universality class of the models. At the critical point the random and aperiodic systems behave similarly, due to the same type of extreme broad distribution of the energy scales at low energies. The critical exponents of some averaged quantities are found to be a universal function of omega, but some others do depend on other parameters of the distribution of the couplings. In the off-critical region there is an important difference between the two systems: there are no Griffiths singularities in aperiodic models.

Frustrated Systems: Ground State Properties via Combinatorial Optimization

An introduction to the application of combinatorial optimization methods to ground state calculations of frustrated, disordered systems is given. We discuss the interface problem in the random bond Ising ferromagnet, the random field Ising model, the diluted antiferromagnet in an external field, the spin glass problem, the solid-on-solid model with a disordered substrate and other convex cost flow problems occurring in superconducting flux line lattices and traffic flow networks. On the algorithmic side we present a concise introduction to a number of elementary algorithms in combinatorial optimization, in particular network flows: the shortest path algorithm, the maximum-flow algorithms and minimum-cost-flow algorithms. We present a short glance at the minimum weighted matching and branch-and-cut algorithms.

Quantum Critical Dynamics of the Random Transverse Field Ising Spin Chain

Dynamical correlations of the spin and the energy density are investigated in the critical region of the random transverse-field Ising chain by numerically exact calculations in large finite systems (L<=128). The spin-spin autocorrelation function is found to decay proportional to (log t)^{-2x_m} and (log t)^{-2x_m^s} in the bulk and on the surface, respectively, with x_m and x_m^s the bulk and surface magnetization exponents, respectively. On the other hand the critical energy-energy autocorrelation functions have a power law decay, which are characterized by novel critical exponents eta_e~2.2 in the bulk and eta_e^s~2.5 at the surface, respectively. The numerical results are compared with the predictions of a scaling theory.

Ground state properties of solid-on-solid models with disordered substrates

We study the glassy super-rough phase of a class of solid-on-solid models with a disordered substrate in the limit of vanishing temperature by means of exact ground states, which we determine with a newly developed minimum cost flow algorithm. Results for the height-height correlation function are compared with analytical and numerical predictions. The domain wall energy of a boundary induced step grows logarithmically with system size, indicating the marginal stability of the ground state, and the fractal dimension of the step is estimated. The sensibility of the ground state with respect to infinitesimal variations of the quenched disorder is analyzed.

A hierarchical model for aging

We present a one dimensional model for diffusion on a hierarchical tree structure. It is shown that this model exhibits aging phenomena although no disorder is present. The origin of aging in this model is therefore the hierarchical structure of phase space.

The Two-Dimensional Disordered Boson Hubbard Model: Evidence for a Direct Mott Insulator-to-Superfluid Transition and Localization in the Bose Glass Phase

We investigate the Bose glass phase and the insulator-to-superfluid transition in the two-dimensional disordered boson Hubbard model in the Villain representation via Monte Carlo simulations. In the Bose glass phase the probability distribution of the local susceptibility is found to have a $1/ χ^2$ tail and the imaginary time Green's function decays algebraically $C(τ) \sim τ^{-1}$, giving rise to a divergent global susceptibility. By considering the participation ratio it is shown that the excitations in the Bose glass phase are fully localized and a scaling law is established. For commensurate boson densities we find a direct Mott insulator to superfluid transition without an intervening Bose glass phase for weak disorder. For this transition we obtain the critical exponents $z=1, ν=0.7\pm 0.1$ and $η= 0.1 \pm 0.1$, which agree with those for the classical three-dimensional XY model without disorder. This indicates that disorder is irrelevant at the tip of the Mott-lobes and that here the inequality $ν\ge2/d$ is violated.

Finite Size Scaling Analysis of Exact Ground States for +/-J Spin Glass Models in Two Dimensions

With the help of EXACT ground states obtained by a polynomial algorithm we compute the domain wall energy at zero-temperature for the bond-random and the site-random Ising spin glass model in two dimensions. We find that in both models the stability of the ferromagnetic AND the spin glass order ceases to exist at a UNIQUE concentration p_c for the ferromagnetic bonds. In the vicinity of this critical point, the size and concentration dependency of the first AND second moment of the domain wall energy are, for both models, described by a COMMON finite size scaling form. Moreover, below this concentration the stiffness exponent turns out to be slightly negative θ_S = -0.056(6) indicating the absence of any intermediate spin glass phase at non-zero temperature.

Bose glass and Mott insulator phase in the disordered boson Hubbard model

We study the Villain representation of the two-dimensional disordered boson Hubbard model via Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the probability distribution of the local susceptibility has a 1/χ^2-tail in the Bose glass phase. This gives rise to a divergence although particles are completely localized here as we prove with the help of the participation ratio. We demonstrate the presence of an incompressible Mott lobe within the Bose glass phase and show that a direct Mott-insulator to superfluid transition happens at the tip of the lobe. Here we find critical exponents z=1, ν~0.7$ and η~0.1, which are reminiscent of the pure three-dimensional classical XY model.

Density Profiles in Random Quantum Spin Chains

We consider random transverse-field Ising spin chains and study the magnetization and the energy-density profiles by numerically exact calculations in rather large finite systems ($L\le 128$). Using different boundary conditions (free, fixed and mixed) the numerical data collapse to scaling functions, which are very accurately described by simple analytic expressions. The average magnetization profiles satisfy the Fisher-de Gennes scaling conjecture and the corresponding scaling functions are indistinguishable from those predicted by conformal invariance.

Quantum Spin Glasses

Ising spin glasses in a transverse field exhibit a zero temperature quantum phase transition, which is driven by quantum rather than thermal fluctuations. They constitute a universality class that is significantly different from the classical, thermal phase transitions. Most interestingly close to the transition in finite dimensions a quantum Griffiths phase leads to drastic consequences for various physical quantities: for instance diverging magnetic susceptibilities are observable over a whole range of transverse field values in the disordered phase.

Vortex lines in the three-dimensional XY model with random phase shifts

The stability of the ordered phase of the three-dimensional XY-model with random phase shifts is studied by considering the roughening of a single stretched vortex line due to the disorder. It is shown that the vortex line may be described by a directed polymer Hamiltonian with an effective random potential that is long range correlated. A Flory argument estimates the roughness exponent to $ζ=3/4$ and the energy fluctuation exponent to $ω=1/2$, thus fulfilling the scaling relation $ω=2ζ-1$. The Schwartz-Edwards method as well as a numerical integration of the corresponding Burger's equation confirm this result. Since $ζ<1$ the ordered phase of the original XY-model is stable.

The One-Dimensional ANNNI model in a Transverse Field: Analytic and numerical study of Effective Hamiltonians

We consider a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain with competing nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions within a transverse magnetic field, which is known to be an equiavelent to the ANNNI model. When studing thermodynamics of the 2D ANNNI model Villain and Bak arrived to a free fermion approximation that neglects heavy excitations from the ferromagnetic ground state, which is an appropriate description close to the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition. In the vicinity of the floating-phase/anti-phase transition another sort of quasiparticles, but free fermions too, appears to be convenient. Although free fermions are a suitable tool for investigation of the phase diagram and the critical properties, they are defined on the fictitious lattice which makes the analysis non-rigorous. Here we deal with a proper fermion scheme which is especially effective %devised to describe the floating-phase/anti-phase transition. for performing exact diagonalization calculations for cyclic chains. Systems up to size $L=32$ has been analysed and the predictions of the effective fermion Hamiltonian has been confirmed. Various predictions for the infinite system and the critical properties are derived.

The critical exponents of the two-dimensional Ising spin glass revisited: Exact Ground State Calculations and Monte Carlo Simulations

The critical exponents for $T\to0$ of the two-dimensional Ising spin glass model with Gaussian couplings are determined with the help of exact ground states for system sizes up to $L=50$ and by a Monte Carlo study of a pseudo-ferromagnetic order parameter. We obtain: for the stiffness exponent $y(=θ)=-0.281\pm0.002$, for the magnetic exponent $δ=1.48 \pm 0.01$ and for the chaos exponent $ζ=1.05\pm0.05$. From Monte Carlo simulations we get the thermal exponent $ν=3.6\pm0.2$. The scaling prediction $y=-1/ν$ is fulfilled within the error bars, whereas there is a disagreement with the relation $y=1-δ$.

Using network-flow techniques to solve an optimization problem from surface-physics

The solid-on-solid model provides a commonly used framework for the description of surfaces. In the last years it has been extended in order to investigate the effect of defects in the bulk on the roughness of the surface. The determination of the ground state of this model leads to a combinatorial problem, which is reduced to an uncapacitated, convex minimum-circulation problem. We will show that the successive shortest path algorithm solves the problem in polynomial time.

Griffiths Singularities in the Disordered Phase of a Quantum Ising Spin Glass

We study a model for a quantum Ising spin glass in two space dimensions by Monte Carlo simulations. In the disordered phase at $T=0$, we find power law distributions of the local susceptibility and local non-linear susceptibility, which are characterized by a smoothly varying dynamical exponent $z$. Over a range of the disordered phase near the quantum transition, the local non-linear susceptibility diverges. The local susceptibility does not diverge in the disordered phase but does diverge at the critical point. Approaching the critical point from the disordered phase, the limiting value of $z$ seems to equal its value precisely at criticality, even though the physics of these two cases seems rather different.
