Halogen-mediated exchange in the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Br,Cl)

Motivated by recent discussion on possible quantum critical behavior in the coupled Cu-tetrahedra system Cu2Te2O5Br2, we present a comparative ab initio study of the electronic properties of Cu2Te2O5Br2 and the isostructural Cu2Te2O5Cl2. A detailed investigation of the copper-copper interaction pathes reveals that the halogen-ions play an important role in the inter-tetrahedral couplings via X_4-rings (X=Br, Cl). We find that, contrary to initial indications, both systems show a similar electronic behavior with long range exchange pathes mediated by the X_4-rings.

Analysis of possible field-induced superconductivity in anthracene, other polyacenes, and C60

We consider electronic structure and superconductivity aspects in field-doped polyacenes (PA) and C60. Within a modified Thomas-Fermi approach for typical experimental values of the surface charge density the injected charge is confined to a monolayer. The electron-phonon coupling constant for internal modes is estimated using the work of Devos et al. (Phys. Rev. B 58, 8236 (1998)) and the density of states N(0) estimated from a 2D-one-band model derived from a full potential LDA band structure calculation for bulk anthracene. The large differences in the reported Tc-values for n-doped PA and C60 are ascribed to enhanced empirical Coulomb pseudopotentials for polyacenes.

Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9: quasi one-dimensional spin-systems with an anomalous low temperature susceptibility

The magnetic behaviour of the low-dimensional Vanadium-oxides Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9 was investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. In both compounds, the results can be very well described by an S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with an intrachain exchange of J = 82 K and J = 94 K in Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9, respectively. In Sr2V3O9, antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 5.3 K indicate a weak interchain exchange of the order of J_perp ~ 2 K. In contrast, no evidence for magnetic order was found in Ba2V3O9 down to 0.5 K, pointing to an even smaller interchain coupling. In both compounds, we observe a pronounced Curie-like increase of the susceptibility below 30 K, which we tentatively attribute to a staggered field effect induced by the applied magnetic field. Results of LDA calculations support the quasi one-dimensional character and indicate that in Sr2V3O9, the magnetic chain is perpendicular to the structural one with the magnetic exchange being transferred through VO4 tetrahedra.

Vibrational Modes in LiBC: Theory Compared with Experiment

The search for other superconductors in the MgB2 class currently is focussed on Li{1-x}BC, which when hole-doped (concentration x) should be a metal with the potential to be a better superconductor than MgB2. Here we present the calculated phonon spectrum of the parent semiconductor LiBC. The calculated Raman-active modes are in excellent agreement with a recent observation, and comparison of calculated IR-active modes with a recent report provides a prediction of the LO--TO splitting for these four modes, which is small for the B-C bond stretching mode at ~1200 cm^{-1}, but large for clearly resolved modes at 540 cm^{-1} and 620 cm^{-1}.

Extreme Electron-Phonon Coupling in Boron-based Layered Superconductors

The phonon-mode decomposition of the electron-phonon coupling in the MgB2-like system Li_{1-x}BC is explored using first principles calculations. It is found that the high temperature superconductivity of such systems results from extremely strong coupling to only ~2% of the phonon modes. Novel characteristics of E_2g branches include (1) ``mode lambda'' values of 25 and greater compared to a mean of $\sim 0.4$ for other modes, (2) a precipitous Kohn anomaly, and (3) E_2g phonon linewidths within a factor of ~2 of the frequency itself, indicating impending breakdown of linear electron-phonon theory. This behavior in borne out by recent inelastic x-ray scattering studies of MgB2 by Shukla et al.

MgCNi3 : Complex behavior in a strongly coupled superconductor

Polycrystalline samples of the recently discovered MgCNi3 superconductor were investigated by transport, ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Consistent results were obtained for the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2(T) from resistance, ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. A WHH like temperature dependence of H_c2(T) and the quadratic relationship H_c2(0) ~ T_c^2 point to an effective predominant single band behavior near the quasi clean limit. Evidence for strong electron-phonon and electron-paramagnon coupling was found analyzing the specific heat data. The corresponding s- and p-wave scenarios are briefly discussed using calculated densities of states of different Fermi surface sheets.

The unusual electronic structure of the "pseudo-ladder" compound CaCu2O3

Experimental and theoretical studies of the unoccupied electronic structure of CaCu2O3 single crystals have been performed using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy and band structure calculations. The measured hole distribution shows an unusual large number of holes in orbitals parallel to the interlayer direction which is in agreement with the theoretical analysis. CaCu2O3 deviates significantly from the standard pd-sigma cuprate picture. The corresponding strong interlayer exchange is responsible for the missing spin gap generic for other two-leg ladder cuprates.

Insulating Ferromagnetism in La$_{4}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10}$: an \textit{Ab Initio} Wannier Function Analysis

Microscopic mechanisms of the puzzling insulating ferromagnetism of half-filled La$_{4}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10}$ are elucidated with energy-resolved Wannier states. The dominant magnetic coupling, revealed through evaluated parameters ($t$, $U$, and $J$), turns out to be the intersite direct exchange, a currently ignored mechanism that overwhelms the antiferromagnetic superexchange. By contrast, the isostructural Nd$_{4}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10}$ develops the observed antiferromagnetic order via its characteristics of a 1D chain. Surprisingly, the in-plane order of both cases is \textit{not} controlled by coupling between nearest neighbors. An intriguing pressure-induced ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition is predicted.

Fermi Surfaces of Diborides: MgB2 and ZrB2

We provide a comparison of accurate full potential band calculations of the Fermi surfaces areas and masses of MgB2 and ZrB2 with the de Haas-van Alphen date of Yelland et al. and Tanaka et al., respectively. The discrepancies in areas in MgB2 can be removed by a shift of sigma-bands downward with respect to pi-bands by 0.24 eV. Comparison of effective masses lead to orbit averaged electron-phonon coupling constants lambda(sigma)=1.3 (both orbits), lambda(pi)=0.5. The required band shifts, which we interpret as an exchange attraction for sigma states beyond local density band theory, reduces the number of holes from 0.15 to 0.11 holes per cell. This makes the occurrence of superconductivity in MgB2 a somewhat closer call than previously recognized, and increases the likelihood that additional holes can lead to an increased Tc.

Theoretical de Haas-van Alphen Data and Plasma Frequencies of MgB2 and TaB2

The de Haas-van Alphen-frequencies as well as the effective masses for a magnetic field parallel to the crystallographic c-axis are calculated within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) for MgB2 and TaB2. In addition, we analyze the plasma frequencies computed for each Fermi surface sheet. We find a large anisotropy of Fermi velocities in MgB2 in difference to the nearly isotropic behavior in TaB2. We compare calculations performed within the relativistic non-full potential augmented-spherical-wave (ASW) scheme and the scalar-relativistic full potential local orbital (FPLO) scheme. A significant dependence for small cross sections on the bandstructure method is found. The comparison with the first available experimental de Haas-van Alphen-data by Yelland et al. (Ref. 19) shows deviations from the electronic structure calculated within both L(S)DA approaches although the cross section predicted by FPLO are closer to the experimental data. The elucidation of the relevant many-body effects beyond the standard LDA is considered as a possible key problem to understand the superconductivity in MgB2.

Prediction of High Tc Superconductivity in Hole-doped LiBC

The layered lithium borocarbide LiBC, isovalent with and structurally similar to the superconductor MgB2, is an insulator due to the modulation within the hexagonal layers (BC vs. B2). We show that hole-doping of LiBC results in Fermi surfaces of B-C p sigma character that couple very strongly to B-C bond stretching modes, precisely the features that lead to superconductivity at Tc = 40 K in MgB2. Comparison of Li{0.5}BC with MgB2 indicates the former to be a prime candidate for electron-phonon coupled superconductivity at substantially higher temperature than in MgB2.

Realization of a large J_2 quasi-2D spin-half Heisenberg system: Li2VOSiO4

Exchange couplings are calculated for Li2VOSiO4 using LDA. While the sum of in-plane couplings J_1 + J_2 = 9.5 \pm 1.5 K and the inter-plane coupling J_{perp} \sim 0.2 - 0.3 K agree with recent experimental data, the ratio J_2/J_1 \sim 12 exceeds the reported value by an order of magnitude. Using geometrical considerations, high temperature expansions and perturbative mean field theory, we show that the LDA derived exchange constants lead to a remarkably accurate description of the properties of these materials including specific heat, susceptibility, Neel temperature and NMR spectra.

Localisation of doped holes in edge-shared CuO_2 chain cuprates: consequences for dynamic spectral weight transfer

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure of the cuprate chain systems A_(1-x)CuO_2 (A=Ca,Sr,Ba), as measured using O-K and Cu-L_3 x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The doping-dependent behaviour in these systems is radically different to that in conventional 2D cuprate networks formed from corner sharing CuO_4 plaquettes, and follows from the strongly suppressed inter-plaquette hybridisation resulting from the 90 degree Cu-O-Cu interaction pathway in the chain systems. Spectroscopically, this results in (a) a classical mixed-valent scenario whereby the different final states in the Cu-L_3 spectra can be used directly to 'read-off' the Cu valency and (b) a drastic reduction in the dynamic spectral weight transfer from the upper Hubbard band to the low energy scale in the O-K spectra. The final picture emerges of localisation of the doped holes, with the chain then comprised of a mixture of pure Cu(II)O_4 and Cu(III)O_4 plaquettes.

Superconductivity Near Ferromagnetism in MgCNi3

An unusual quasi-two-dimensional heavy band mass van Hove singularity (vHs) lies very near the Fermi energy in MgCNi3, recently reported to superconduct at 8.5 K. This compound is strongly exchange enhanced and is unstable to ferromagnetism upon hole doping with 12% Mg --> Na or Li. The 1/4-depleted fcc (frustrated) Ni sublattice and lack of Fermi surface nesting argues against competing antiferromagnetic and charge density wave instabilities. We identify an essentially infinite mass along the M-Gamma line, leading to quasi-two-dimensionality of this vHs may promote unconventional p-wave pairing that could coexist with superconductivity.

Electronic structure and weak electron-phonon coupling in TaB$_2$

We present electronic structure calculations together with resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat measurements for TaB$_2$ to search for the recently contradictorily reported superconductivity and to study related normal state properties. We ascribe the absence of superconductivity down to 1.5 K for our TaB$_2$ samples to the generally weak electron phonon coupling derived from comparison of the calculated and measured specific heat constants. For the E$_{2g}$ and the B$_{1g}$ $Γ$ point phonons we derive from the calculated deformation potentials very small electron phonon couplings for these modes, opposite to the strong coupling of the E$_{2g}$ mode in MgB$_2$, probably responsible for its high $T_c$. In comparison to MgB$_2$, we discuss the origin of the quite different features in the density of states and of the Fermi surfaces. The differences are mainly due to the strong hybridization between Ta 5$d$ and B 2$p$ states outside the hexagonal basis plane.

The upper critical field problem in MgB2

The upper critical field Hc2(T) for MgB2 is analyzed in terms of single and multi-band Eliashberg models. The relatively high value of Hc2(0) in the range of 14 to 18 Tesla can be understood, if a strongly coupled subgroup of heavy quasiparticles is involved in the superconductivity. The sizable coupling to both low- and high-frequency bosons is essential. This picture is supported by LDA calculations of Fermi velocity distribution over different sheets of the Fermi surface with special emphasis on the hole tubes. The possible origin of anharmonic soft modes is briefly discussed. Similarities and differences with transition metal borocarbides are figured out.

Metal insulator transition in TlSr2CoO5 from orbital degeneracy and spin disproportionation

To describe the metal insulator transition in the new oxide TlSr2CoO5 we investigate its electronic structure by LDA and model Hartree-Fock calculations. Within LDA we find a homogeneous metallic and ferromagnetic ground state, but when including the Coulomb interaction more explicitly within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find an insulating state of lower energy with both spin and orbital order. We also interpret our results in terms of a simple model.

Weak antiferromagnetism due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$

The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Both, the superexchange theory and the complementary group theoretical consideration, lead to the same conclusion on the character of this order. The analysis of the ground-state magnetic properties of the derived model leads to the prediction of an additional noncollinear modulation of the antiferromagnetic structure. This weak antiferromagnetism is restricted to one of the Cu sublattices.
