Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is $R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$. A rate-only analysis finds $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst})$ in a three-neutrino framework.

First observation of $η(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)π^0$

The decays $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^+π^-π^0$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^0π^0π^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $η(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)π^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $η'$ are also measured precisely.

A side-by-side comparison of Daya Bay antineutrino detectors

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin$^22θ_{13}$ at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements.

Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.

THz meta-foil - a new photonic material

Seeing sharper or becoming invisible are visions strongly driving the development of THz metamaterials. Strings are a preferred architecture of metamaterials as they extend continuously along one dimension. Here, we demonstrate that laterally interconnecting strings by structural elements that are placed in oscillation nodes such as to not quench electromagnetic resonances enables manufacturing of self-supported free-standing all-metal metamaterials. Upright S-strings, interconnected by rods, form a space-grid which we call meta-foil. In this way, we introduce binding between the "atoms" of the metamaterial, thus doing away with conventional "frozen-in solutions" like matrix embedding or thin films on substrates. Meta-foils are locally stiff, yet globally flexible. Even bent to cylinders of 1 cm radius, they maintain their spectral response, thus becoming true metamaterials on curved surfaces. Exploiting UV/X-ray lithography and ultimately plastic moulding, meta-foils can be cost-effectively manufactured in large areas and quantities to serve as optical elements.

Freely-suspended matrix-free metamaterials showing THz left-handed pass bands

Featuring dense spatial distributions of engineered metallic particles, electromagnetic metamaterials exhibit simultaneously negative values of both, dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, within a resonance frequency band called left-handed passband. Unusual electromagnetic properties are found resulting in promising applications such as sub-wavelength resolution imaging. State-of-the-art micro/nanomanufacturing has led to resonance frequencies reaching the visible red. The common embedding of the metal particles in plastic matrices or deposition on dielectric substrates within a small area severely limits the usefulness of the materials. Here, we use UV or X-ray lithography to build comparably large areas and quantities of the first freely-suspended matrix-free metamaterials in which the metallic structures are S-string-like with their ends held by a window-frame. In vacuo spectral characterization combined with simulation reveals left-handed passbands from 1.6 to 2.2 THz. Owing to their size, the devices can be easily handled. They offer a straightforward way of making them tunable and two-dimensionally isotropic.

Determination of the mass of the W boson

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. The most efficient experimental methods which will be used are also described.
