Local GL(d,R) Lie group for solving quantum ADM constraints

Relevance of local GL(d,R) Lie group for solving quantum ADM constraints is pointed out. Noncommutative harmonic analysis on $GL(d,R)/O(d)$ provides a natural basis and techniques for calculations. This is summarized. Such a basis is explicitly constructed for space dimension $d=2$.

Quantization of Einstein Gravity: Extraction of Hilbert Space and Constraints

In this paper, a careful treatment of extraction of the Hilbert space and constraints from the formal functional integral with the Einstein-Hilbert action is given. The diffeomorphism inavariant measure is worked out using the metric of metrics. The procedure of quantizing the classical constraints is bypassed. Instead the relevant operator constraints are directly obtained from the functional integral, removing the ambiguities and uncertainties involved in guessing them from the classical theory. The novelties of the resulting formalism are briefly discussed.

Dreibein as prepotential for three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We advocate and develop the use of the dreibein (and the metric) as prepotential for three-dimensional SO(3) Yang-Mills theory. Since the dreibein transforms homogeneously under gauge transformation, the metric is gauge invariant. For a generic gauge potential, there is a unique dreibein on fixing the boundary condition. Topologically non-trivial monopole configurations are given by conformally flat metrics, with scalar fields capturing the monopole centres. Our approach also provides an ansatz for the gauge potential covering the topological aspects.

Real-Space Renormalization Group for Quantum Gravity I: Significance of terms linear and quadratic in curvature

Real-Space renormalization group techniques are developed for tackling large curvature fluctuations in quantum gravity. Within cells of invariant volume $a^4$, only certain types of fluctuations are allowed. Normal coordinates are used to avoid redundancy of the degrees of freedom. The relevant integration measure is read off from the metric on metrics. All fluctuations in a group of cells are averaged over to get an effective action for the larger cell. In this paper the simplest type of fluctuations are kept. The measure is simply an integration over independent components of the curvature tensor at the center of each cell. Terms of higher order in $a$ are required for convergence in case of Einstein-Hilbert action. With only next order (in $a$) contribution to the action, there is no renormalization of Newton's or cosmological constants. The `massless Gaussian surface' in the renormalization group space is given by actions that have linear and quadratic terms in curvature and determines the evolution of coupling constants away from it. Our techniques allow for systematic improvements.

Quantization of a torus phase space

Quantization of $R^2$ and $S^1 \times S^1$ phase spaces are explicitly carried out tweaking the techniques of geometric quantization. Crucial is a combined use of left and right invariant vector fields. Canonical bases, operators and their actions are explicitly presented. Arguments of Dirac and also Wu and Yang for monopoles are applied for obtaining the quantization of the phase space area. Equivalence of states in the infinite dimensional prequantum Hilbert space resulting in a physical Hilbert space of dimension equal to the phase space area in units of the Planck constant is demonstrated. These techniques can be applied to any manifold with a symplectic structure.

Line discontinuities, local action with both the field and its dual, and spin from no spin in two-dimensional scalar theory

We consider a local action with both the real scalar field and its dual in two Euclidean dimensions. The role of singular line discontinuities is emphasized. Exotic properties of the correlation of the field with its dual, the generation of spin from scalar fields, and quantization of dual charges are pointed out. Wick's theorem and rotation properties of fermions are recovered for half-integer quantization.

Two-potential theory of electric and magnetic charges via duality transformation

Dirac, Schwinger and Zwanziger theories of electric and magnetic charges are obtained via duality transformation. Analogous construction for three Euclidean dimensions, with magnetic charges interacting with electric currents, is also done. The role of Dirac strings as dislocations in the configurations of gauge potential is emphasized.

Accounting for monopole configurations in Yang-Mills theory in three Euclidean dimensions

A gauge transformation provided by the three eigenfunctions of $\B^a(x) \cdot \B^b(x)$ (where $\B^a(x)$, with a=1,2,3, are the non-Abelian magnetic fields) exposes the topological configurations of the Yang-Mills fields. In particular, it gives Dirac monopoles interacting with `photons' and massless charged vector bosons. A magnetic dipole field at each monopole corresponds to infinitesimal translation of the monopole, and provides the functional measure a la collective coordinates. The grand canonical partition function of the monopole plasma is exactly equivalent to a local field theory with certain scalar fields interacting with the Yang-Mills fields. This integrates topological degrees of freedom with perturbation theory.

Criterion for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

The Bethe-Salpeter equation is related to a generalized quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian. Instability of the presumed vacuum, indicated by a tachyon, is related to a negative energy eigenstate of this Hamiltonian. The variational method shows that an arbitrarily weak long-range attraction leads to chiral symmetry breaking, except in the scale-invariant case when the instability occurs at a critical value of the coupling. In the case of short-range attraction, an upper bound for the critical coupling is obtained.

Are neutrino masses dynamically generated by quantum gravity attractions?

It is argued that the quantum gravity attractions dynamically generate tiny degenerate Majorana masses for the neutrinos. The unequal masses of the charged leptons then induce a computable neutrino mass matrix with splittings and mixings through the electroweak interactions. In this way the Standard Model including quantum gravity can accommodate and predict the neutrino masses and mixings. Some consequences are pointed out.

Evading divergences in quantum field theory

Explicit solution of a Green function in a non-renormalizable toy model demonstrates that Green functions of the interacting theory fall off much faster than at the tree level at large momenta. This suggests a method of calculations in quantum field theory which is free of divergences.

Instability in scalar channel of fermion-antifermion scattering amplitude in massless QED_3 and anomalous dimensions of composite operators

Instability in the scalar channel of the fermion-antifermion scattering amplitude in massless QED_3 for number of flavours less than the critical value 128/3π^2 is demonstrated. The anomalous dimensions of gauge-invariant composite operators are determined to O(1/N). Exponentiation of the O(1/N) infrared logarithm is explicitly demonstrated by evaluating the contribution of the ladder diagrams.

Gauge dependence of the infrared behaviour of massless QED_3

Using the Zumino identities it is shown that in a class of non-local gauges, massless QED_3 has an infrared behaviour of a conformal field theory with a continuously varying anomalous dimension of the fermion. In the usual Lorentz gauge, the fermion propagator falls off exponentially for a large separation, but this apparent fermion mass is a gauge artifact.

Gauge-invariant dressed fermion propagator in massless QED_3

The infrared behaviour of the gauge-invariant dressed fermion propagator in massless QED_3 is discussed for three choices of dressing. It is found that only the propagator with the isotropic (in three Euclidean dimensions) choice of dressing is acceptable as the physical fermion propagator. It is explained that the negative anomalous dimension of this physical fermion does not contradict any field-theoretical requirement.

Infrared behaviour of massless QED in space-time dimensions 2 < d < 4

We show that the logarithmic infrared divergences in electron self-energy and vertex function of massless QED in 2+1 dimensions can be removed at all orders of 1/N by an appropriate choice of a non-local gauge. Thus the infrared behaviour given by the leading order in 1/N is not modified by higher order corrections. Our analysis gives a computational scheme for the Amati-Testa model, resulting in a non-trivial conformal invariant field theory for all space-time dimensions 2 < d < 4.

The Signals and Systems Approach to Quantum Computation

In this note we point out the fact that the proper conceptual setting of quantum computation is the theory of Linear Time Invariant systems. To convince readers of the utility of the approach, we introduce a new model of computation based on the orthogonal group. This makes the link to traditional electronics engineering clear. We conjecture that the speed up achieved in quantum computation is at the cost of increased circuit complexity.

Perturbation theory including topological degrees of freedom: Yang-Mills theory in three Euclidean dimensions

A method for systematically including topological degrees of freedom in perturbation theory is developed. This is not bound by the restrictions of semi-classical techniques. The Yang-Mills theory in three Euclidean dimensions is considered here. A well-defined separation of the topological and the ``spin wave'' degrees of freedom is obtained, motivated by a singular gauge. This has ``photons'' distorting the spherically symmetric magnetic fields of Dirac monopoles, and massless charged vector bosons ``W'' scattering off the latter. It is explicitly shown that the Dirac string does not contribute. The mode of the charged vector bosons with total angular momentum J=0 provides precisely the core to give a finite energy to the monopole. The radial equation for W is remarkably simplified and only two polarization states survive exactly for the anomalous magnetic moment required by the Yang-Mills interaction.

Half-monopoles and half-vortices in the Yang-Mills theory

It is demonstrated that there are smooth Yang-Mills potentials which correspond to monopoles and vortices of one-half winding number. They are the generic configurations, in contrast to the integral winding number configurations like the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole.
