Injection of Positrons into a Dense Electron Cloud in a Magnetic Dipole Trap

The creation of an electron space charge in a dipole magnetic trap and the subsequent injection of positrons has been experimentally demonstrated. Positrons (5eV) were magnetically guided from their source and injected into the trapping field generated by a permanent magnet (0.6T at the poles) using a cross field E $\times$ B drift, requiring tailored electrostatic and magnetic fields. The electron cloud is created by thermionic emission from a tungsten filament. The maximum space charge potential of the electron cloud reaches -42V, which is consistent with an average electron density of ($4 \pm 2$) $\times 10^{12}$ $\text{m}^{-3}$ and a Debye length of ($2 \pm 1$) $\text{cm}$. We demonstrate that the presence of this space potential does not hamper efficient positron injection. Understanding the effects of the negative space charge on the injection and confinement of positrons represents an important intermediate step towards the production of a confined electron-positron pair plasma.

Measurement of Wave Electric Fields in Plasmas by Electro-Optic Probe

Electric field measurement in plasmas permits quantitative comparison between the experiment and the simulation in this study. An electro-optic (EO) sensor based on Pockels effect is demonstrated to measure wave electric fields in the laboratory magnetosphere of the RT-1 device with high frequency heating sources. This system gives the merits that electric field measurements can detect electrostatic waves separated clearly from wave magnetic fields, and that the sensor head is separated electrically from strong stray fields in circumference. The electromagnetic waves are excited at the double loop antenna for ion heating in electron cyclotron heated plasmas. In the air, the measured wave electric fields are in good absolute agreement with those predicted by the TASK/WF2 code. In inhomogeneous plasmas, the wave electric fields in the peripheral region are enhanced compared with the simulated electric fields. The potential oscillation of the antenna is one of the possible reason to explain the experimental results qualitatively.

Thermo-magneto coupling in a dipole plasma

On a dipole plasma, we observe the generation of magnetic moment, as the movement of the levitating magnet-plasma compound, in response to electron-cyclotron heating and the increase of $β$ (magnetically-confined thermal energy). We formulate a thermodynamic model with interpreting heating as injection of microscopic magnetic moment; the corresponding chemical potential is the ambient magnetic field.

Nature of Structural Transformations in the B2O3 Glass under High Pressure

We report the results of the X-ray diffraction study of B2O3 glass in the pressure interval up to 10 GPa in the 300-700 K temperature range, the results of in-situ volumetric measurements of the glass at pressures up to 9 GPa at room temperature, and first-principles simulations data at pressures up to 250GPa. The behavior of B2O3 glass under pressure can be described as two broad pressure-overlapping transitions. The first transition starts at P > 1 GPa and proceeds without any changes in thecoordination number of the boron atoms; the other one starts at P > 5 GPa and is accompanied by a gradual increase of coordination number. The second transition is completely reversible; the residual densification of the B2O3 glass after decompression is associated with the incomplete reversibility of the first transformation. The fraction of boron atoms transferred to the 4-coordination state in the glass at P < 10 GPa is much smaller than was assumed from indirect experimental data [4], but is considerably larger (by tens of times) than was previously suggested by the classical molecular dynamics simulations [5,6]. The observed transformations under both compression and decompression are quite broad, contrary to the assumption in Ref. [7]. On the basis of ab-initio results, we also predict the one more transformation under higher pressures to a super-dense phase, in which B atoms become 5- and 6-fold coordinated.

Development of a Multiphoton Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) system using a Streak Camera

We report the development and detailed calibration of a multiphoton fluorescence lifetime imaging system (FLIM) using a streak camera. The present system is versatile with high spatial (0.2 micron) and temporal (50 psec) resolution and allows rapid data acquisition and reliable and reproducible lifetime determinations. The system was calibrated with standard fluorescent dyes and the lifetime values obtained were in very good agreement with values reported in literature for these dyes. We also demonstrate the applicability of the system to FLIM studies in cellular specimens including stained pollen grains and fibroblast cells expressing green fluorescent protein. The lifetime values obtained matched well with those reported earlier by other groups for these same specimens. Potential applications of the present system include the measurement of intracellular physiology and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) imaging which are discussed in the context of live cell imaging.
