Scattering and Trapping of Nonlinear Schroedinger Solitons in External Potentials

Soliton motion in some external potentials is studied using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Solitons are scattered by a potential wall. Solitons propagate almost freely or are trapped in a periodic potential. The critical kinetic energy for reflection and trapping is evaluated approximately with a variational method.

Noise-induced synchronization for phase turbulence

Phase turbulence is suppressed by applying common noise additively to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky type equation, and the noise-induced phase synchronization is realized. The noise strength necessary for the suppression of phase turbulence is evaluated theoretically.

Shock Structures and Velocity Fluctuations in the Noisy Burgers and KdV-Burgers Equations

Statistical properties of the noisy Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are numerically studied. It is found that shock-like structures appear in the time-averaged patterns for the case of stepwise fixed boundary conditions. Our results show that the shock structure for the noisy KdV-Burgers equation has an oscillating tail, even for the time averaged pattern. Also, we find that the width of the shock and the intensity of the velocity fluctuations in the shock region increase with system size.

Stable solitons in coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations describing Bose-Einstein condensates and nonlinear optical waveguides and cavities

We introduce a model of a two-core system, based on an equation of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) type, coupled to another GL equation, which may be linear or nonlinear. One core is active, featuring intrinsic linear gain, while the other one is lossy. The difference from previously studied models involving a pair of linearly coupled active and passive cores is that the stabilization of the system is provided not by a linear diffusion-like term, but rather by a cubic or quintic dissipative term in the active core. Physical realizations of the models include systems from nonlinear optics (semiconductor waveguides or optical cavities), and a double-cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with a negative scattering length, in which the active ``cigar'' is an atom laser. The replacement of the diffusion term by the nonlinear loss is principally important, as diffusion does not occur in these physical media, while nonlinear loss is possible. A stability region for solitary pulses is found in the system's parameter space by means of direct simulations. One border of the region is also found in an analytical form by means of a perturbation theory. Moving pulses are studied too. It is concluded that collisions between them are completely elastic, provided that the relative velocity is not too small. The pulses withstand multiple tunneling through potential barriers. Robust quantum-rachet regimes of motion of the pulse in a time-periodic asymmetric potential are found as well.

Effective Viscosity and Time Correlation for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation

A shock-like structure appears in a time-averaged pattern produced by the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and the noisy Burgers equation with fixed boundary conditions. We show that the effective viscosity computed from the width of the time-averaged shock structure is consistent with that computed from the time correlation of the fluctuations. The effective viscosity depends on the lengthscale, although our system size is not sufficiently large to satisfy the asymptotic dynamic scaling law. We attempt to determine the effective viscosity in a finite size system with the projection operator method.

Polarization transfer in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reaction at forward angles and structure of the spin-dipole resonances

Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between $θ_{lab}=$ 0$^\circ$ and 14$^\circ$. The non-spin-flip ($ΔS=0$) and spin-flip ($ΔS=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by $ΔL=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with $ΔS=1$ and $ΔL=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. Experimental results are reasonably explained by distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with the shell model wave functions.

The Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance in 208Pb and the Nuclear incompressibility

The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. The implication of these results on the experimental value of nuclear incompressibility are discussed.

Stable localized pulses and zigzag stripes in a two-dimensional diffractive-diffusive Ginzburg-Landau equation

We introduce a model of a two-dimensional (2D) optical waveguide with Kerr nonlinearity, linear and quintic losses, cubic gain, and temporal-domain filtering. In the general case, temporal dispersion is also included, although it is not necessary. The model provides for description of a nonlinear planar waveguide incorporated into a closed optical cavity. It takes the form of a 2D cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation with an anisotropy of a novel type: the equation is diffractive in one direction, and diffusive in the other. By means of systematic simulations, we demonstrate that the model gives rise to \emph{stable} fully localized 2D pulses, which are spatiotemporal ``light bullets'', existing due to the simultaneous balances between diffraction, dispersion, and Kerr nonlinearity, and between linear and quintic losses and cubic gain. A stability region of the 2D pulses is identified in the system's parameter space. Besides that, we also find that the model generates 1D patterns in the form of simple localized stripes, which may be stable, or may exhibit an instability transforming them into oblique stripes with zigzags. The straight and oblique stripes may stably coexist with the 2D pulse, but not with each other.

Thin Ice Target for $^{16}$O(p,p') experiment

A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm$^2$ cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ experiment at $E_{p}=392$ MeV. Background-free spectra were obtained.
