Ultra slow electron holes in collisionless plasmas: stability at high ion temperature

Numerical simulations recover ultra slow electron holes (EH) of electron-acoustic genre propagating stably well below the ion acoustic speed where the ion response disallows any known pure electron perturbation. The reason of stability of EH at high ion temperature ($T_{i}> T_{e}$) is traced to the loss of neutralizing cold ion response. In a background of cold ions, $θ=T_e/T_i\gg 1$, they have an ion compression that accelerates to jump over a forbidden velocity gap and settle on the high velocity tail of the electron distribution $f_e$, confirming to a recently identified limit of the nonlinear dispersion relation. For $θ=T_e/T_i \le 1$, however, the warm ions begin to supplement the electron response transforming the ion compression to decompression at the hole location and triggering multiplicity of the scales in trapped electron population which prompts an immediate generalization of the basic EH theory.

The successive formation and disappearance of density structures in simple expanding systems

The Lagrangian fluid description is employed to solve the initial value problem for one-dimensional, compressible fluid flows represented by the Euler-Poisson system. Exact nonlinear and time-dependent solutions are obtained, which exhibit a variety of transient phenomena such as a density collapse in finite space-time or the appearance and, for the first time, a successive dissolution of wavelet structures during the same event. The latter are superimposed on the gross density pattern in the course of the uni-directional expansion of an initially localized density hump. Whereas self-gravitating fluids will always experience collapse, neutral fluids and fluids with repulsive forces, such as a non-neutral, pure electron fluid, can exhibit an evolution of the second type, being determined by the initial conditions. For an electron fluid, being embedded in a neutralizing ion background, these nonlinearities are, however, strongly diminished due to the omnipresent plasma oscillations, which weaken and alternatively change the sign of the collective force.

Observation and characterization of laser-driven Phase Space Electron Holes

The direct observation and full characterization of a Phase Space Electron Hole (EH) generated by laser-matter interaction is presented. This structure has been detected via proton radiography during the interaction between an intense laser pulse (t=1ns temporally flat-top, I= 10^14W/cm^2) and a gold 26 micron thick hohlraum. This technique has allowed us the simultaneous detection of propagation velocity, potential and electron density spatial profile across the EH with fine spatial and temporal resolution providing an unprecedentedly detailed experimental characterization.

Kinetic electrostatic structures in current-carrying pair plasmas

The existence and properties of phase-space structures in current-carrying pair plasmas is studied by means of the finite amplitude expressions of the pseudo-potential method. Emphasis is given to double layers, solitary structures and periodic waves. The results can be applied to electron-positron plasmas as well as to plasmas containing heavier charged particles with the same mass and opposite charges, such as fullerene ions and dust particles. They can also help to understand numerical simulations that showed the spontaneous formation of phase-space holes in linearly stable regimes.

Quantum corrected electron holes

The theory of electron holes is extended into the quantum regime. The Wigner--Poisson system is solved perturbatively based in lowest order on a weak, standing electron hole. Quantum corrections are shown to lower the potential amplitude and to increase the number of deeply trapped electrons. They, hence, tend to bring this extreme non--equilibrium state closer to thermodynamic equilibrium, an effect which can be attributed to the tunneling of particles in this mixed state system.

Envelope Solitons of Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with an Anti-cubic Nonlinearity

On the basis of a recently-proposed method to find solitary solutions of generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations [1]-[3], the existence of an envelope solitonlike solutions of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing an anti-cubic nonlinearity (|Psi|^{-4} Psi) plus a "regular" nonlinear part is investigated. In particular, in case the regular nonlinear part consists of a sum of a cubic and a quintic nonlinearities (i.e. q_1 |Psi|^2 Psi + q_2 |Psi|^4 Psi), an upper-shifted bright envelope solitonlike solution is explicitly found.
