Intrinsic negative magnetoresistance from the chiral anomaly of multifold fermions

The chiral anomaly, a hallmark of chiral spin-1/2 Weyl fermions, is an imbalance between left- and right-moving particles that underpins both high and low energy phenomena, including particle decay and negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in Weyl semimetals. The discovery that chiral crystals can host higher-spin generalizations of Weyl quasiparticles without high-energy counterparts, known as multifold fermions, raises the fundamental question of whether the chiral anomaly is a more general phenomenon. Answering this question requires materials with chiral quasiparticles within a sizable energy window around the Fermi level, that are unaffected by trivial extrinsic effects such as current jetting. Here we report the chiral anomaly of multifold fermions in CoSi, which features multifold bands within about 0.85 eV around the Fermi level. By excluding current jetting through the squeezing test, we measure an intrinsic, longitudinal negative magnetoresistance. We develop the semiclassical theory of magnetotransport of multifold fermions that shows that the negative magnetoresistance originates in their chiral anomaly, despite a sizable and detrimental orbital magnetic moment contribution, previously unaccounted for. A concomitant nonlinear Hall effect supports the multifold-fermion origin of magnetotransport. Our work confirms the chiral anomaly of higher-spin generalizations of Weyl fermions, currently inaccessible outside the solid-state.

Probing the shape of the Weyl Fermi surface of NbP using transverse electron focusing

The topology of the Fermi surface significantly influences the transport properties of a material. Firstly measured through quantum oscillation experiments, the Fermi surfaces of crystals are now commonly characterized using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), given the larger information volume it provides. In the case of Weyl semimetals, ARPES has proven remarkably successful in verifying the existence of the Weyl points and the Fermi arcs, which define a Weyl Fermi surface. However, ARPES is limited in resolution, leading to significant uncertainty when measuring relevant features such as the distance between the Weyl points. While quantum oscillation measurements offer higher resolution, they do not reveal insights into the cross-sectional shape of a Fermi surface. Moreover, both techniques lack critical information about transport, like the carriers mean free path. Here, we report measurements unveiling the distinctive peanut-shaped cross-section of the Fermi surface of Weyl fermions and accurately determine the separation between Weyl points in the Weyl semimetal NbP. To surpass the resolution of ARPES, we combine quantum oscillation measurements with transverse electron focusing (TEF) experiments, conducted on microstructured single-crystals. The TEF spectrum relates to the Fermi surface shape, while the frequency of the quantum oscillations to its area. Together, these techniques offer complementary information, enabling the reconstruction of the distinctive Weyl Fermi surface geometry. Concurrently, we extract the electrical transport properties of the bulk Weyl fermions. Our work showcases the integration of quantum oscillations and transverse electron focusing in a singular experiment, allowing for the measurements of complex Fermi surface geometries in high-mobility quantum materials.

Semiconductor Epitaxy in Superconducting Templates

Integration of high quality semiconductor-superconductor devices into scalable and CMOS compatible architectures remains an outstanding challenge, currently hindering their practical implementation. Here, we demonstrate growth of InAs nanowires monolithically integrated on Si inside lateral cavities containing superconducting TiN elements. This technique allows growth of hybrid devices characterized by sharp semiconductor-superconductor interfaces and with alignment along arbitrary crystallographic directions. Electrical characterization at low temperature reveals proximity induced superconductivity in InAs via a transparent interface.

Phase transitions in single-crystalline magnetoelectric LiCoPO4

Specific heat, magnetic torque, and magnetization studies of LiCoPO4 olivine are presented. They show that an unique set of physical properties of LiCoPO4 leads to the appearance of features characteristic of 2D Ising systems near the Neel temperature, T_N =21.6 K, and to the appearance of an uncommon effect of influence of magnetic field on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The latter effect manifests itself as a first-order transition, discovered at ~9 K, induced by magnetic field of 8 T. Physical nature of this transition was explained and a model describing experimental dependences satisfactorily was proposed.

The beta Phase of Multiferroic Bismuth Ferrite and its beta-gamma Metal-Insulator Transition

We show that epitaxial (001) thin films of multiferroic bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 are monoclinic at room temperature instead of tetragonal or Rhombohedral as reported earlier . We report a orthorhombic order-disorder beta-phase between 820C and 950C contrary to the earlier report. The transition sequence monoclinic-orthorhombic phase in (001)BiFeO3 thin film (rhombohedral-orthorhombic transition in single crystal) resembles that of BaTiO3 or PbSc1/2Ta1/2O3. The transition to the cubic $γ$-phase causes an abrupt collapse of the bandgap toward zero (insulator-metal transition) at the orthorhombic-cubic beta-gamma transition around 950C. This transition is similar to the metal-insulator transition in Ba0.6K0.4BiO3.

Heun equation, Teukolsky equation, and type-D metrics

Starting with the whole class of type-D vacuum backgrounds with cosmological constant we show that the separated Teukolsky equation for zero rest-mass fields with spin $s=\pm 2$ (gravitational waves), $s=\pm 1$ (electromagnetic waves) and $s=\pm 1/2$ (neutrinos) is an Heun equation in disguise.

The Dirac propagator in the Kerr-Newman metric

We give an alternative proof of the completeness of the Chandrasekhar ansatz for the Dirac equation in the Kerr-Newman metric. Based on this, we derive an integral representation for smooth compactly supported functions which in turn we use to derive an integral representation for the propagator of solutions of the Cauchy problem with initial data in the above class of functions. As a by-product, we also obtain the propagator for the Dirac equation in the Minkowski space-time in oblate spheroidal coordinates.

Chandrasekhar separation ansatz and the generalized total angular momentum for the Dirac equation in the Kerr-Newman metric

In this paper we compute the square root of the generalized squared total angular momentum operator $J$ for a Dirac particle in the Kerr-Newman metric. The separation constant $λ$ arising from the Chandrasekahr separation ansatz turns out to be the eigenvalue of $J$. After proving that $J$ is a symmetry operator, we show the completeness of Chandrasekhar Ansatz for the Dirac equation in oblate spheroidal coordinates and derive an explicit formula for the propagator $e^{-itH}$.

Commensurate-Incommensurate Magnetic Phase Transition in Magnetoelectric Single Crystal LiNiPO$_4$

Neutron scattering studies of single-crystal LiNiPO$_4$ reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component giving rise to peaks at small momentum-transfers around the origin at $(0,\pm Q,0)$. The wavelength of the modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state. These observations explain the anomalous first-order transition seen in the magnetoelectric effect of this system.

The Bremsstrahlung Process Nu_Tau -> Nu_e E+ E- Gamma

The bremsstrahlung process Nu_Tau -> Nu_e E+ E- Gamma is the dominant photon-producing decay of heavy Tau neutrinos with m_Nu_Tau > 2 m_e so that this process is instrumental for supernova 1987A constraints on the properties of these particles, notably on their mixing amplitude with Nu_e. We calculate the rate of the bremsstrahlung process as well as the photon spectrum and the angular distribution relative to the spin direction of the parent neutrino. We carefully pay attention to the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos.
