Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory: Rivet version 3

First released in 2010, the Rivet library forms an important repository for analysis code, facilitating comparisons between measurements of the final state in particle collisions and theoretical calculations of those final states. We give an overview of Rivet's current design and implementation, its uptake for analysis preservation and physics results, and summarise recent developments including propagation of MC systematic-uncertainty weights, heavy-ion and $ep$ physics, and systems for detector emulation. In addition, we provide a short user guide that supplements and updates the Rivet user manual.

Surrogate Models for Direct Dark Matter Detection

In this work we introduce RAPIDD, a surrogate model that speeds up the computation of the expected spectrum of dark matter particles in direct detection experiments. RAPIDD replaces the exact calculation of the dark matter differential rate (which in general involves up to three nested integrals) with a much faster parametrization in terms of ordinary polynomials of the dark matter mass and couplings, obtained in an initial training phase. In this article, we validate our surrogate model on the multi-dimensional parameter space resulting from the effective field theory description of dark matter interactions with nuclei, including also astrophysical uncertainties in the description of the dark matter halo. As a concrete example, we use this tool to study the complementarity of different targets to discriminate simplified dark matter models. We demonstrate that RAPIDD is fast and accurate, and particularly well-suited to explore a multi-dimensional parameter space, such as the one in effective field theory approach, and scans with a large number of evaluations.

Three-Flavoured Non-Resonant Leptogenesis at Intermediate Scales

Leptogenesis can successfully explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry via out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the early Universe. In this article, we focus on non-resonant thermal leptogenesis and the possibility of lowering its scale. In order to do so, we calculate the lepton asymmetry produced from the decays of one and two heavy Majorana neutrinos using three-flavoured density matrix equations in an exhaustive exploration of the model parameter space. We find regions of the parameter space where thermal leptogenesis is viable at intermediate scales, $T\sim 10^{6}$ GeV. However, the viability of thermal leptogenesis at such scales requires a certain degree of cancellation between the tree and one-loop level contribution to the light neutrino mass matrix and we quantify such fine-tuning.

The SM and NLO Multileg and SM MC Working Groups: Summary Report

The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development.

Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas

These are the proceedings of the "Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas" held at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, February 9-11, 2011. The workshop explored in depth the determination of alphas(mZ) in the MS-bar scheme from the key categories where high precision measurements are currently being made, including DIS and global PDF fits, tau-decays, electroweak precision observables and Z-decays, event-shapes, and lattice QCD. These proceedings contain a short summary contribution from the speakers, as well as the lists of authors, conveners, participants, and talks.

Hadron-Hadron and Cosmic-Ray Interactions at multi-TeV Energies

The workshop on "Hadron-Hadron and Cosmic-Ray Interactions at multi-TeV Energies" held at the ECT* centre (Trento) in Nov.-Dec. 2010 gathered together both theorists and experimentalists to discuss issues of the physics of high-energy hadronic interactions of common interest for the particle, nuclear and cosmic-ray communities. QCD results from collider experiments -- mostly from the LHC but also from the Tevatron, RHIC and HERA -- were discussed and compared to various hadronic Monte Carlo generators, aiming at an improvement of our theoretical understanding of soft, semi-hard and hard parton dynamics. The latest cosmic-ray results from various ground-based observatories were also presented with an emphasis on the phenomenological modeling of the first hadronic interactions of the extended air-showers generated in the Earth atmosphere. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

Rotation and outflow in the central kiloparsec of the water megamaser galaxies IC 2560, NGC 1386, NGC 1052, and Mrk 1210

Optical emission-line profiles were evaluated in order to explore the structure of galactic nuclei containing H2O megamaser sources. Galactic rotation and outflow of narrow-line gas are common features of this sample of water megamaser galaxies. All decomposed line-systems exhibit AGN typical line ratios. Recent detections of H2O megamasers in starburst galaxies and the apparent asssociation of one megamaser with a Seyfert 1 AGN suggest that megamasers can possibly be triggered by optically detectable outflows. The frequently encountered edge-on geometry favoring large molecular column densities appears to be verified for NGC 1386 and IC 2560. For NGC 1052 and Mrk 1210, maser emission triggered by the optically detected outflow components cannot be ruled out.

Introductory lecture notes on the Karabali-Nair theory

The Schroedinger functional treatment of 2+1 D Yang-Mills theory (related to the magnetic mass problem of 4D hot gluons) is recapitulated by following Karabali, Kim and Nair in Nucl. Phys. B 524 (1998) 661 (first half). The notes include the Hermitean WZW model and end up with the lowest eigenvalue (mass gap) of the functional kinetic energy. Let calculational details be invariant under the (german) language used.

Thermal variational principle and gauge fields

A Feynman-Jensen version of the thermal variational principle is applied to hot gauge fields, Abelian as well as non-Abelian: scalar electrodynamics (without scalar self-coupling) and the gluon plasma. The perturbatively known self-energies are shown to derive by variation from a free quadratic (''Gaussian'') trial Lagrangian. Independence of the covariant gauge fixing parameter is reached (within the order $g^3$ studied) after a reformulation of the partition function such that it depends on only even powers of the gauge field. Also static properties (Debye screening) are reproduced this way. But because of the present need to expand the variational functional, the method falls short of its potential nonperturbative power.

The Infrared Sensitivity of Screening and Damping in a Quark-Gluon Plasma

All the next-to-leading order contributions to the quasi-particle dispersion laws of a quark-gluon plasma which due to infrared singularities are sensitive to the magnetic-mass scale are calculated using Braaten-Pisarski resummation. These relative-order-$g\ln(g)$ corrections are shown here to generally contribute to the dynamical screening of gluonic fields with frequencies below the plasma frequency as well as to the damping of propagating gluonic and fermionic quasi-particles. In the limit of vanishing wave-vector the infrared singularities disappear, but in a way that raises the possibility for formally higher orders of the Braaten-Pisarski scheme to equally contribute at next-to-leading order when the wave-vector is of the order of or less than the magnetic-mass scale. This is argued to be a problem in particular for the fermionic damping rate.

On the Gluon Plasmon Self-Energy at O(g)

The next-to-leading order contribution $\d¶\omn (ø,\vc q )$ to the polarization function of the hot gluon system is analysed at non-zero wave vectors $\vc q \,$. Using Braaten-Pisarski resummation and general covariant gauges, $\d¶\omn$ is found to be gauge-fixing independent and transverse on the longitudinal mass-shell. The real part of the longitudinal component $\d¶_\ell$ is UV and IR stable (for real $q$). At imaginary $q$ it is IR singular, and at the point $ø=0$, $q^2=-3m^2$ it coincides with the result of Rebhan for next-to-leading order Debye screening. When $q$ approaches the lightcone, $\d¶_\ell $ diverges like $1 / \wu {ø^2 - q^2} $, reflecting the breakdown of the Braaten-Pisarski decomposition scheme in this limit.

Resummations in Hot Scalar Electrodynamics

The gauge-boson sector of perturbative scalar electrodynamics is investigated in detail as a testing ground for resummation methods in hot gauge theories. It also serves as a simple non-trivial reference system for the non-Abelian gluon plasma. The complete next-to-leading order contributions to the polarization tensor are obtained within the resummation scheme of Braaten and Pisarski. The simpler scheme proposed recently by Arnold and Espinosa is shown to apply to static quantities only, whereas Braaten-Pisarski resummation turns out to need modification for collective phenomena close to the light-cone. Finally, a recently proposed resummation of quasi-particle damping contributions is assessed critically.
