Multipolar ordering from dynamical mean field theory with application to CeB6

Magnetic and multipolar ordering in f electron systems takes place at low temperatures of order 1--10 Kelvin. Combinations of first-principles with many-body calculations for such low-energy properties of correlated materials are challenging problems. We address multipolar ordering in f electron systems based on the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) combined with density functional theory. We derive the momentum-dependent multipolar susceptibilities and interactions in two ways: by solving the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation of the two-particle Green's function and by using a recently developed approximate strong-coupling formula. We apply the formalism to the prototypical example of multipolar ordering in CeB6 using the Hubbard-I solver, and demonstrate that the experimental quadrupole transition is correctly reproduced. The results by the approximate formula show good agreement with those by the BS equation. This first-principles formalism for multipolar ordering based on DMFT has applications which are beyond the reach of the traditional RKKY formula. In particular, more itinerant electron systems including 5f, 4d and 5d electrons can be addressed.

Hidden covalent insulator and spin excitations in SrRu$_2$O$_6$

The density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory is used to study the spin excitation spectra of SrRu$_2$O$_6$. A good quantitative agreement with experimental spin excitation spectra is found. Depending on the size of the Hund's coupling $J_H$ the systems chooses either Mott insulator or covalent insulator state when magnetic ordering is not allowed. We find that the nature of the paramagnetic state has negligible influence on the charge and spin excitation spectra. We find that antiferromagnetic correlations hide the covalent insulator state for realistic choices of the interaction parameters.

Updated Core Libraries of the ALPS Project

The open source ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project provides a collection of physics libraries and applications, with a focus on simulations of lattice models and strongly correlated systems. The libraries provide a convenient set of well-documented and reusable components for developing condensed matter physics simulation code, and the applications strive to make commonly used and proven computational algorithms available to a non-expert community. In this paper we present an updated and refactored version of the core ALPS libraries geared at the computational physics software development community, rewritten with focus on documentation, ease of installation, and software maintainability.
