Status of APEmille

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. This paper briefly summarizes the APEmille architecture, reviews the status of the installations and presents some performance figures for physics codes.

Quenched QCD with O(a) improvement: I. The spectrum of light hadrons

We present a comprehensive study of the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, as well as octet and decuplet baryons computed in O(a) improved quenched lattice QCD. Results have been obtained using the non-perturbative definition of the improvement coefficient c_sw, and also its estimate in tadpole improved perturbation theory. We investigate effects of improvement on the incidence of exceptional configurations, mass splittings and the parameter J. By combining the results obtained using non-perturbative and tadpole improvement in a simultaneous continuum extrapolation we can compare our spectral data to experiment. We confirm earlier findings by the CP-PACS Collaboration that the quenched light hadron spectrum agrees with experiment at the 10% level.

Progress and status of APEmille

We report on the progress and status of the APEmille project: a SIMD parallel computer with a peak performance in the TeraFlops range which is now in an advanced development phase. We discuss the hardware and software architecture, and present some performance estimates for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) applications.

Low-Lying Eigenvalues of the Wilson-Dirac Operator

An exploratory study of the low-lying eigenvalues of the Wilson-Dirac operator and their corresonding eigenvectors is presented. Results for the eigenvalues from quenched and unquenched simulations are discussed. The eigenvectors are studied with respect to their localization properties in the quenched approximation for the cases of SU(2) and SU(3).

CP Violation and Strong Phases from Penguins in $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow PP$ and $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow VP$ Decays

We calculate direct CP-violating rate asymmetries in charged $B\to PP$ and $B\to VP$ decays arising from the interference of amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong phases develop at order $α_s$ from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. CPT constraints are maintained. Based on this model, we find that partial rate asymmetries between charge conjugate $B^{\pm}$ decays can be as high as 20\% for certain channels with branching ratios in the $10^{-6}$ range. Because the $c\bar{c}$ threshold lies so close to the physical momentum scale, the asymmetries depend sensitively on the model assumptions used to evaluate the imaginary parts of the matrix elements, in particular, on the internal momentum transfer. The charge asymmetries of partial rates would provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation.

Branching ratio and direct CP-violating rate asymmetry of the rare decays $B \to K^\ast γ$ and $B \to ργ$

We calculate CP-violating rate asymmetries in the rare radiative decays $B^\pm\rightarrow K^{\ast\pm} γ$ and $B^\pm\rightarrow ρ^\pm γ$. They arise because of the interference between leading-order penguin amplitudes and one-gluon corrections with absorptive phases, and provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation. Complementing earlier studies, we also investigate gluon exchange with the `spectator' quark. The bound state effects in the exclusive matrix elements are taken into account by a covariant model, which yields a branching ratio $BR(B\rightarrow K^\ast γ) = (4-5)\times 10^{-5}$ in good agreement with the observed value. The bound state effects increase the CP asymmetry, which is of order $1 \%$ in the channel $B\rightarrow K^\ast γ$ and $15 \%$ for $B \to ργ$.

CP Violation and Strong Phases from Penguins in $\bf B^{\pm}\rightarrow VV$ Decays

We calculate direct CP-violating observables in charged $B\to VV$ decays arising from the interference of amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong phases develop at order $α_s$ from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. CPT constraints are maintained. Based on this model, we find that partial rate asymmetries between charge conjugate $B^{\pm}$ decays can be as high as 15-30\% for certain channels with branching ratios in the $10^{-6}$ range. The small values of the coefficients of angular correlations, which we calculated previously to be of order $10^{-2}$, are not significantly degraded by the strong phases. The charge asymmetries of rates and angular distributions would provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation.

Exclusive Radiative B-Decays in the Light-Cone QCD Sum Rule Approach

We carry out a detailed study of exclusive radiative rare $B$-decays in the framework of the QCD sum rules on the light cone, which combines the traditional QCD sum rule technique with the description of final state vector mesons in terms of the light-cone wave functions of increasing twist. The decays considered are: $B_{u,d} \to K^* +γ, B_{u,d}\to ρ+γ, B_d\to ω+γ$ and the corresponding decays of the $B_s$ mesons, $B_s\to ϕ+γ$ and $B_s\to K^*+γ$. Based on our estimate of the transition form factor $F_1^{B \to K^*\pg}(0) =0.32\pm0.05$, we find for the branching ratio $BR(B \to K^* + γ) = (4.8\pm 1.5)\times 10^{-5}$, which is in agreement with the observed value measured by the CLEO collaboration. We present detailed estimates for the ratios of the radiative decay form factors, which are then used to predict the rates for the exclusive radiative B-decays listed above. This in principle allows the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{td}|$ from the penguin-dominated CKM-suppressed radiative decays when they are measured. We give a detailed discussion of the dependence of the form factors on the $b$-quark mass and on the momentum transfer, as well as their interrelation with the CKM-suppressed semileptonic decay form factors in $B\to ρ+\ell+ν$, which we also calculate in our approach.

Equations of Motion for Effective Lagrangians and Penguins in Rare B-Decays

We study the application of the classical equations of motion (EOM) within the framework of an effective low-energy Lagrangian treated at the loop level. Gauge-fixing and ghost terms, which enter naturally in the EOM, are found to lead to no physical effects --- neither through operator mixing nor in matrix elements. Beyond first order in the effective interactions, contact terms have to be included when reducing the effective Lagrangian and we present an explicit procedure to construct them. Applied to (hadronic) rare B-decays, the EOM drastically simplify the effective Lagrangian and its matching to the underlying theory, and certain cancellations of large (logarithmic) contributions become more transparent. Finally, we discuss details of the `matching' of the effective Lagrangian, which may be helpful in incorporating short distance QCD corrections in further phenomenological studies.
