Lattice-based QCD equation of state at finite baryon density: Cluster Expansion Model

The QCD equation of state at finite baryon density is studied in the framework of a Cluster Expansion Model (CEM), which is based on the fugacity expansion of the net baryon density. The CEM uses the two leading Fourier coefficients, obtained from lattice simulations at imaginary $μ_B$, as the only model input and permits a closed analytic form. Excellent description of the available lattice data at both $μ_B = 0$ and at imaginary $μ_B$ is obtained. We also demonstrate how the Fourier coefficients can be reconstructed from baryon number susceptibilities.

Flavor-dependent eigenvolume interactions in a hadron resonance gas

Eigenvolume effects in the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model are studied for experimental hadronic yields in nucleus-nucleus collisions. If particle eigenvolumes are different for different hadron species, the excluded volume HRG (EV-HRG) improves fits to multiplicity data. In particular, using different mass~-~volume relations for strange and non-strange hadrons we observe a remarkable improvement in the quality of the fits. This effect appears to be rather insensitive to other details in the schemes employed in the EV-HRG. We show that the parameters found from fitting the data of the ALICE Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$~TeV entail the same improvement for all centralities at the same collision energy, and for the RHIC and SPS data at lower collision energies. Our findings are put in the context of recent fits of lattice QCD results.

Bose-Einstein condensation and liquid-gas phase transition in alpha-matter

Systems of Bose particles with both repulsive and attractive interactions are studied using the Skyrme-like mean-field model. The phase diagram of such systems exhibits two special lines in the chemical potential-temperature plane: one line which represents the first-order liquid-gas phase transition with the critical end point, and another line which represents the onset of Bose-Einstein condensation. The calculations are made for strongly-interacting matter composed of alpha particles. The phase diagram of this matter is qualitatively similar to that observed for the atomic He4 liquid. The sensitivity of the results to the model parameters is studied. For weak interaction coupling the critical point is located at the Bose-condensation line.

New scenarios for hard-core interactions in a hadron resonance gas

The equation of state of a baryon-symmetric hadronic matter with hard-sphere interactions is studied. It is assumed that mesons are point-like, but baryons and antibaryons have the same hard-core radius rB. Three possibilities are considered: 1) the baryon-baryon and antibaryon-baryon interactions are the same; 2) baryons do not interact with antibaryons; 3) the baryon-antibaryon and meson-(anti)baryon interactions are negligible. By choosing the parameter rB=0.3-0.6 fm, we calculate the nucleon to pion ratio as a function of temperature and perform the fit of hadron yields measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at the bombarding energy Ecm=2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. New nontrivial effects in the interacting hadron resonance gas at temperatures 150-200 MeV are found.

Critical fluctuations in models with van der Waals interactions

Particle number fluctuations are considered within the van der Waals (VDW) equation, which contains both attractive (mean-field) and repulsive (eigenvolume) interactions. The VDW equation is used to calculate the scaled variance of particle number fluctuations in generic Boltzmann VDW system and in nuclear matter. The strongly intensive measures $Δ[E^*,N]$ and $Σ[E^*,N]$ of the particle number and excitation energy fluctuations are also considered, and, similarly, show singular behavior near the critical point. The $Δ[E^*,N]$ measure is shown to attain both positive and negative values in the vicinity of critical point. Based on universality argument, similar behavior is expected to occur in the vicinity of the QCD critical point.

Hydrodynamic modeling of a pure-glue initial scenario in high-energy hadron and heavy-ion collisions

Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. The comparable hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions for (2+1)-flavor and Yang-Mills equations of state performed by using three different hydrodynamic codes are presented. Assuming slow chemical equilibration of quarks, the spectra and elliptic flows of thermal dileptons and photons are calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is shown that a suppression of quarks at early times leads to a significant reduction of the yield of the thermal dileptons, but only to a rather modest suppression of the $p_T$-distribution of direct photons. It is demonstrated that an enhancement of photon and dilepton elliptic flows might serve as a promising signature of the pure-glue initial state. Calculations based on Bjorken hydrodynamics suggest that collisions of small systems at intermediate energies available at RHIC or future FAIR facilities may show stronger effects associated with initial pure gluodynamic evolution.

Electromagnetic probes of a pure-glue initial state in nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. To study the implications of such a scenario, the dynamical evolution of a chemically nonequilibrated system is described by the ideal (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics with a time dependent (anti)quark fugacity. The equation of state interpolates linearly between the lattice data for the pure gluonic matter and the lattice data for the chemically equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. The spectra and elliptic flows of thermal dileptons and photons are calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. We test the sensitivity of the results to the choice of equilibration times, including also the case where the complete chemical equilibrium of partons is reached already at the initial stage.

Chemical freeze-out conditions in hadron resonance gas

The hadron resonance gas model with hadron-type dependent eigenvolume corrections is employed to fit the hadron yield data of the NA49 collaboration for central Pb+Pb collisions at the c.m. energy per nucleon pair Ecm=6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV, the hadron midrapidity yield data of the STAR collaboration for Au+Au collisions at Ecm=200 GeV, and the hadron midrapidity yield data of the ALICE collaboration for Pb+Pb collisions at Ecm=2760 GeV. The influence of the eigenvolume corrections is studied.

Entropy production in chemically non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma created in central Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies

We study the possibility that partonic matter produced at early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is out of chemical equilibrium. It is assumed that initially this matter is mostly composed of gluons, but quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. The dynamical evolution of partonic system is described by the Bjorken-like ideal hydrodynamics with a time dependent quark fugacity. The results of this model are compared with those obtained by assuming the complete chemical equilibrium of partons already at the initial stage. It is shown that in a chemically non-equilibrium scenario the entropy gradually increases, and about 25% of the total final entropy is generated during the hydrodynamic evolution of deconfined matter. We argue that the (anti)quark suppression included in this approach may be responsible for reduced (anti)baryon to meson ratios observed in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies.

Fast Dynamical Evolution of Hadron Resonance Gas via Hagedorn States

Hagedorn states are the key to understand how all hadrons observed in high energy heavy ion collisions seem to reach thermal equilibrium so quickly. An assembly of Hagedorn states is formed in elementary hadronic or heavy ion collisions at hadronization. Microscopic simulations within the transport model UrQMD allow to study the time evolution of such a pure non-equilibrated Hagedorn state gas towards a thermally equilibrated Hadron Resonance Gas by using dynamics, which unlike strings, fully respect detailed balance. Propagation, repopulation, rescatterings and decays of Hagedorn states provide the yields of all hadrons up to a mass of m=2.5 GeV. Ratios of feed down corrected hadron multiplicities are compared to corresponding experimental data from the ALICE collaboration at LHC. The quick thermalization within t=1-2 fm\c of the emerging Hadron Resonance Gas exposes Hagedorn states as a tool to understand hadronization.

Undersaturation of quarks at early stages of relativistic nuclear collisions: the hot glue initial scenario and its observable signatures

The early stage of high multiplicity nuclear collisions is represented by a nearly quarkless, hot, deconfined pure gluon plasma. This new scenario should be characterized by a suppression of high $p_T$ photons and dileptons as well as by reduced baryon to meson ratios. We present the numerical results for central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energies by using the ideal Bjorken hydrodynamics with time-dependent quark fugacity. It is shown that about 25\% of final total entropy is generated during the hydrodynamic evolution of chemically undersaturated quark-gluon plasma.

Collective Flow Global Collective Flow in Heavy Ion Reactions from the Beginnings to the Future

Fluid dynamical models preceded the first heavy ion accelerator experiments, and led to the main trend of this research since then. In recent years fluid dynamical processes became a dominant direction of research in high energy heavy ion reactions. The Quark-gluon Plasma formed in these reactions has low viscosity, which leads to significant fluctuations and turbulent instabilities. One has to study and separate these two effects, but this is not done yet in a systematic way. Here we present a few selected points of the early developments, the most interesting collective flow instabilities, their origins, their possible ways of detection and separation form random fluctuations arising from different origins, among these the most studied is the randomness of the initial configuration in the transverse plane.

Directed, Elliptic and Triangular Flows in Asymmetric Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper we propose to thoroughly investigate asymmetric nuclear collisions both in the fixed target mode at the laboratory energy below 5 GeV per nucleon and in the collider mode with a center of mass energy below 11 GeV per nucleon. Using the UrQMD transport model, we demonstrate a strong enhancement of directed and elliptic flow coefficients for the midcentral asymmetric nuclear collisions compared to symmetric collisions. We argue that such an enhancement is due to the disappearance of the nuclear shadowing effect on the side of the smaller projectile nucleus. An analysis of the energy and centrality dependencies of the directed, elliptic and triangular flows at midrapidity shows us their sensitivity to the details of the employed model of hadronic interaction. In general, the flow patters found for asymmetric nuclear collisions have a very rich and complicated structure of energy and centrality dependencies compared to the flows found for symmetric collisions and are worth to be investigated experimentally. The directed, elliptic, and triangular flow coefficients are computed for target nuclei containing high density fluctuations and thoroughly compared with that ones obtained in the absence of such fluctuations.

Hydrodynamics with a chiral hadronic equation of state including quark degrees of freedom

We investigate the influence of a deconfinement phase transition on the dynamics of hot and dense nuclear matter. We apply a hybrid model where an intermediate hydrodynamics stage is employed for the the hot and dense stage of a system created in head-on collisions of Pb+Pb/Au+Au at beam energies from $2-160A $GeV. The initial and final interactions are performed by a microscopic transport approach (UrQMD). An equation of state that incorporates a critical end point (CEP) in line with lattice data is used. It follows from coupling the Polyakov loop (as an order parameter for deconfinement) to a chiral hadronic $SU(3)_f$ model. In this configuration the EoS describes chiral restoration as well as the deconfinemt phase transition. We compare the results obtained in this approach to results from a non interacting hadron resonance gas, focussing on observables deemed to be sensitive to the phase transition to the quark gluon plasma.

Equation of state at FAIR energies and the role of resonances

Two microscopic models, UrQMD and QGSM, are used to extract the effective equation of state (EOS) of locally equilibrated nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions at energies from 11.6 AGeV to 160 AGeV. Analysis is performed for the fixed central cubic cell of volume V = 125 fm**3 and for the expanding cell that followed the growth of the central area with uniformly distributed energy. For all reactions the state of local equilibrium is nearly approached in both models after a certain relaxation period. The EOS has a simple linear dependence P/e = c_s**2 with 0.12 < c_s**2 < 0.145. Heavy resonances are shown to be responsible for deviations of the c_s**2(T) and c_s**2(mu_B) from linear behavior. In the T-mu_B and T-mu_S planes the EOS has also almost linear dependence and demonstrates kinks related not to the deconfinement phase transition but to inelastic freeze-out in the system.

Production and evolution path of dileptons at HADES energies

Dilepton production in intermediate energy nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in elementary proton-proton reactions is analysed within the UrQMD transport model. For C+C collisions at 1 AGeV and 2 AGeV the resulting invariant mass spectra are compared to recent HADES data. We find that the experimental spectrum for C+C at 2 AGeV is slightly overestimated by the theoretical calculations in the region around the vector meson peak, but fairly described in the low mass region, where the data is satisfactorily saturated by the Dalitz decay of the $η$ meson and the $Δ$ resonance. At 1 AGeV an underestimation of the experimental data is found, pointing that at lower energies the low mass region is not fully saturated by standardly parametrized $Δ$ Dalitz decays alone. Furthermore, predictions for dilepton spectra for $pp$ reactions at 1.25 GeV, 2.2 GeV and 3.5 GeV and Ar+KCl reactions at 1.75 AGeV are presented. The study is complemented by a detailed investigation of the role of absorption of the parent particles on the corresponding dilepton yields in the regime which has so far been probed by HADES.

Neutron Stars in a Chiral Model with Finite Temperature

Neutron star matter is investigated in a hadronic chiral model approach using the lowest flavor-SU(3) multiplets for baryons and mesons. The parameters are determined to yield consistent results for saturated nuclear matter as well as for finite nuclei. The influence of baryonic resonances is discussed. The global properties of a neutron star such as its mass and radius are determined. Proto-neutron star properties are studied by taking into account trapped neutrinos, temperature and entropy effects.
