Evidence of kaon nuclear and Coulomb potential effects on soft K+ production from nuclei

The ratio of forward K+ production on copper, silver and gold targets to that on carbon has been measured at proton beam energies between 1.5 and 2.3 GeV as a function of the kaon momentum p_K using the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich. The strong suppression in the ratios observed for p_K<200-250 MeV/c can be ascribed to a combination of Coulomb and nuclear repulsion in the K+A system. This opens a new way to investigate the interaction of K+-mesons in the nuclear medium. Our data are consistent with a K+A nuclear potential of V_K~20 MeV at low kaon momenta and normal nuclear density. Given the sensitivity of the data to the kaon potential, the current experimental precision might allow one to determine V_K to better than 3 MeV.

Spin-triplet final-state dominance in the pp -> pn pi+ reaction at 492 MeV

The near-forward cross section for the pp -> pn pi^+ reaction has been measured at 492 MeV by using the large acceptance ANKE magnetic spectrometer placed at an internal target position of the storage ring COSY-Juelich. Protons and pions emitted near zero degrees were detected in coincidence, and those with theta_pi <= 2 degrees and theta_p <= 2.5degrees were subjected to detailed analysis. Under these conditions, the excitation energy in the np system was below 3 MeV over the measured momentum range. This is the region of the np final-state-interaction peak, which was measured with a resolution of a fraction of an MeV. The shape of the peak allows one to conclude that the fraction of final spin-singlet np pairs is below about 10%. By using the results of scattering theory, this limit is confirmed through a comparison with the cross section for pp -> d pi^+. The smallness of the singlet contribution is consistent with trends seen in lower energy data.

Phenomenological analysis of K+ meson production in proton-nucleus collisions

Total and differential cross sections from literature, on the production of K+ mesons in pA interactions at projectile energies between T=0.8 and 2.9 GeV, covering the transition across the free nucleon-nucleon threshold at 1.58 GeV, have been investigated. From the target-mass dependence of the production cross sections no evidence for the expected change of the dominant reaction mechanism from two-step to direct kaon production was found. At T=1.0 GeV the A dependences of the total cross sections and of the most recent data from COSY-Juelich, differential cross sections measured under forward angles, are strongly different. The invariant K+ production cross sections show an overall exponential scaling behavior with the squared four-momentum transfer between the beam proton and the produced K+ meson for t< -0.05 GeV^2 independent of the beam energy and emission angle. The data from COSY-Juelich reveal a strongly different t dependence in the region of t>0 GeV^2. Further data at forward angles and different beam energies should be taken in order to explore this region of kinematically extreme conditions.

The lifetime of the Lambda hyperon bound in hypernuclei produced by p+U collisions

The nonmesonic decay of the Lambda hyperon has been investigated by observation of delayed fission from heavy hypernuclei produced in proton-U collisions at Tp = 1.9 GeV. The lifetime of heavy hypernuclei with masses A approximately 220 obtained in the present work, i.e. tau = 138 +- 6 (stat.) +-m 17 (syst.) ps, is the most accurate result for heavy hypernuclei produced in proton and antiproton induced collisions on a U target so far. Measurements and simulations of Cherenkov light in lead fluoride crystals

The anticipated use of more than one thousand lead fluoride (PbF2) crystals as a fast and compact Cherenkov calorimeter material in a parity violation experiment at MAMI stimulated the investigation of the light yield (L.Y.) of these crystals. The number of photoelectrons (p.e.) per MeV deposited energy has been determined with a hybrid photomultiplier tube (HPMT). In response to radioactive sources a L.Y. between 1.7 and 1.9 p.e./MeV was measured with 4% statistical and 5% systematic error. The L.Y. optimization with appropriate wrappings and couplings was investigated by means of the HPMT. Furthermore, a fast Monte Carlo simulation based on the GEANT code was employed to calculate the characteristics of Cherenkov light in the PbF2 crystals. The computing time was reduced by a factor of 50 compared to the regular photon tracking method by implementing detection probabilities as a three-dimensional look-up table. For a single crystal a L.Y. of 2.1 p.e./MeV was calculated. The corresponding detector response to electrons between 10 and 1000 MeV was highly linear with a variation smaller than 1%.

Test of low-energy theorems for p(\vec{gamma},π^{0})p in the threshold region

The photon asymmetry in the reaction p(\vecγ,π^{0})p close to threshold has been measured for the first time with the photon spectrometer TAPS using linearly polarized photons from the tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The total and differential cross sections were also measured simultaneously with the photon asymmetry. This allowed determination of the S-wave and all three P-wave amplitudes. The low-energy theorems based on the parameter-free third-order calculations of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory for P1 and P2 agree with the experimental values.

Medium effects in the production and pi0 gamma decay of omega-mesons in pA collisions in the GeV region

The omega-resonance production and its pi0 gamma decay in p-A reactions close to threshold is considered within the Intranuclear Cascade (INC) Model. The pi0 gamma invariant mass distribution shows two components which correspond to the omega decay 'inside' and 'outside' the nucleus, respectively. The 'inside' component is distorted by medium effects, which introduce a mass shift as well as collisional broadening for the omega-meson and its decaying pion. The relative contribution of the 'inside' component is analyzed in detail for different kinematical conditions and nuclear targets. It is demonstrated that a measurement of the correlation in azimuthal angle between the pi0 and gamma momenta allows to separate events related to the 'inside' omega decay from different sources of background when uncorrelated pi0's and gamma's are produced.

Nonmesonic decay of the Lambda-hyperon in hypernuclei produced by p+Au collisions

The lifetime of the Lambda-hyperon for the nonmesonic decay Lambda N ---> N N has been determined by a measurement at COSY Juelich of the delayed fission of heavy hypernuclei produced in proton - Au collisions at T_p=1.9 GeV. It is found that heavy hypernuclei with mass numbers A= 180 +- 5 and atomic numbers Z= 74 +-2 fission with a lifetime 130ps +- 13ps (stat.) +- 15ps (syst.) . This value together with the results obtained for other heavy hypernuclei in previous investigations indicates (on the confidence level of 0.9) a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule for Lambda N ---> NN transitions as known from the weak mesonic decays of kaons and hyperons. Photon production in heavy-ion collisions close to the pion threshold

We report on a measurement of hard photons (Eg>30 MeV) in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV at an energy in which photons from the decay of pi0 mesons are dominating. Simultaneous measurement with the TAPS spectrometer of the photon spectrum and photon-photon coincidences used for the identification of pi0 enabled the subtraction of pi0 contribution. The resulting photon spectrum exhibits an exponential shape with an inverse slope of E0=(53+-0.03(stat)-5+8(syst)) MeV. The photon multiplicity, equal to (1.21+-0.03(stat)+0.3-0.2(syst))10E0-2, is roughly one order of magnitude larger than the value extrapolated from existing systematics. This enhancement of the hard photon production is attributed to a strong increase in the contribution of secondary np collisions to the total photon yield. We conclude that, on average, the number of np collisions which contribute to the hard photon production is 7 times larger than the number of first chance np collisions in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV.
