Quark Confinement Physics from Quantum Chromodynamics

We show the construction of the dual superconducting theory for the confinement mechanism from QCD in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge using the lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulation. We find that essence of infrared abelian dominance is naturally understood with the off-diagonal gluon mass $m_{\rm off} \simeq 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ induced by the MA gauge fixing. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon amplitude is forced to be small, and the off-diagonal gluon phase tends to be random. As the mathematical origin of abelian dominance for confinement, we demonstrate that the strong randomness of the off-diagonal gluon phase leads to abelian dominance for the string tension. In the MA gauge, there appears the macroscopic network of the monopole world-line covering the whole system. We investigate the monopole-current system in the MA gauge by analyzing the dual gluon field $B_μ$. We evaluate the dual gluon mass as $m_B = 0.4 \sim$ 0.5GeV in the infrared region, which is the lattice-QCD evidence of the dual Higgs mechanism by monopole condensation. Owing to infrared abelian dominance and infrared monopole condensation, QCD in the MA gauge is describable with the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Dirac-mode expansion for confinement and chiral symmetry breaking

We develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator. Applying this method to the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in SU(3) lattice QCD calculation on 6^4 at beta=5.6 at the quenched level. Notably, the Wilson loop is found to obey the area law, and the slope parameter corresponding to the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged, even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking. We find also that the Polyakov loop remains to be almost zero even without the low-lying Dirac modes, which indicates the Z_3-unbroken confinement phase. These results indicate that one-to-one correspondence does not hold between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Lattice QCD Study for Confinement in Hadrons

We study three subjects on quark confinement in hadrons in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD. From the accurate lattice calculation for more than 300 different patterns of three-quark (3Q) systems, we find that the static 3Q potential is well described by Y-Ansatz, i.e., the Coulomb plus Y-type linear potential. We also study the multi-quark (4Q, 5Q) potentials in lattice QCD, and find that they are well described by the one-gluon-exchange (OGE) Coulomb plus string-theoretical linear potential, which supports the {\it infrared string picture} even for the multi-quarks. The second subject is a lattice-QCD determination of the relevant gluonic momentum component for confinement. The string tension (confining force) is found to be almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, {\it quark confinement originates from the low-momentum gluon below about 1.5GeV.} Finally, we consider a possible gauge of QCD for the quark potential model, by investigating "instantaneous inter-quark potential" in generalized Landau gauge, which describes a continuous change from the Landau gauge to the Coulomb gauge.

Survival of charmonia above Tc in anisotropic lattice QCD

We find a strong evidence for the survival of $J/Ψ$ and $η_c$ as spatially-localized $c\bar c$ (quasi-)bound states above the QCD critical temperature $T_c$, by investigating the boundary-condition dependence of their energies and spectral functions. In a finite-volume box, there arises a boundary-condition dependence for spatially spread states, while no such dependence appears for spatially compact states. In lattice QCD, we find almost {\it no} spatial boundary-condition dependence for the energy of the $c\bar c$ system in $J/Ψ$ and $η_c$ channels for $T\simeq(1.11-2.07)T_c$. We also investigate the spectral function of charmonia above $T_c$ in lattice QCD using the maximum entropy method (MEM) in terms of the boundary-condition dependence. There is {\it no} spatial boundary-condition dependence for the low-lying peaks corresponding to $J/Ψ$ and $η_c$ around 3GeV at $1.62T_c$. These facts indicate the survival of $J/Ψ$ and $η_c$ as compact $c\bar c$ (quasi-)bound states for $T_c < T < 2T_c$.

Inter-Quark Potentials in Baryons and Multi-Quark Systems in QCD

We perform the first studies of various inter-quark potentials in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD. From the accurate lattice calculation for more than 300 different patterns of three-quark (3Q) systems, we find that the static 3Q potential $V_{\rm 3Q}$ is well described by Y-Ansatz, i.e., the Coulomb plus Y-type linear potential. Quark confinement mechanism in baryons is also investigated in maximally-Abelian projected QCD. We next study the multi-quark potentials $V_{n{\rm Q}}$ ($n$=4,5) in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD, and find that they are well described by the one-gluon-exchange Coulomb plus multi-Y type linear potential, which supports the flux-tube picture even for the multi-quarks. Finally, we study the heavy-heavy-light quark (QQq) potential both in lattice QCD and in a lattice-QCD-based quark model.

Scalar-Quark Systems and Chimera Hadrons in SU(3)_c Lattice QCD

Light scalar-quarks ϕ(colored scalar particles or idealized diquarks) and their color-singlet hadronic states are studied with quenched SU(3)_c lattice QCD in terms of mass generation in strong interaction without chiral symmetry breaking. We investigate ``scalar-quark mesons'' ϕ^\dagger ϕand ``scalar-quark baryons'' ϕϕϕwhich are the bound states of scalar-quarks ϕ. We also investigate the bound states of scalar-quarks ϕand quarks ψ, i.e., ϕ^\dagger ψ, ψψϕand ϕϕψ, which we name ``chimera hadrons''. All the new-type hadrons including ϕare found to have a large mass even for zero bare scalar-quark mass m_ϕ=0 at a^{-1}\simeq 1GeV. We find that the constituent scalar-quark and quark picture is satisfied for all the new-type hadrons. Namely, the mass of the new-type hadron composed of m ϕ's and n ψ's, M_{{m}ϕ+{n}ψ}, satisfies M_{{m}ϕ+{n}ψ}\simeq {m} M_ϕ+{n} M_ψ, where M_ϕand M_ψare the constituent scalar-quark and quark mass, respectively. M_ϕat m_ϕ=0 estimated from these new-type hadrons is 1.5-1.6GeV, which is larger than that of light quarks, M_ψ\simeq 400{\rm MeV}. Therefore, in the systems of scalar-quark hadrons and chimera hadrons, scalar-quarks acquire large mass due to large quantum corrections by gluons. Together with other evidences of mass generations of glueballs and charmonia, we conjecture that all colored particles generally acquire a large effective mass due to dressed gluon effects.

Bound States of (Anti-)Scalar-Quarks in SU(3)_c Lattice QCD

Charmonium properties in deconfinement phase in anisotropic lattice QCD

J/Psi and eta_c above the QCD critical temperature T_c are studied in anisotropic quenched lattice QCD, considering whether the c\bar c systems above T_c are spatially compact (quasi-)bound states or scattering states. We adopt the standard Wilson gauge action and O(a)-improved Wilson quark action with renormalized anisotropy a_s/a_t =4.0 at β=6.10 on 16^3\times (14-26) lattices, which correspond to the spatial lattice volume V\equiv L^3\simeq(1.55{\rm fm})^3 and temperatures T\simeq(1.11-2.07)T_c. We investigate the c\bar c system above T_c from the temporal correlators with spatially-extended operators, where the overlap with the ground state is enhanced. To clarify whether compact charmonia survive in the deconfinement phase, we investigate spatial boundary-condition dependence of the energy of c\bar c systems above T_c. In fact, for low-lying S-wave c \bar c scattering states, it is expected that there appears a significant energy difference ΔE \equiv E{\rm (APBC)}-E{\rm (PBC)}\simeq2\sqrt{m_c^2+3π^2/L^2}-2m_c (m_c: charm quark mass) between periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions on the finite-volume lattice. In contrast, for compact charmonia, there is no significant energy difference between periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. As a lattice QCD result, almost no spatial boundary-condition dependence is observed for the energy of the c\bar c system in J/Ψand η_c channels for T\simeq(1.11-2.07)T_c. This fact indicates that J/Ψand η_c would survive as spatially compact c\bar c (quasi-)bound states below 2T_c. We also investigate a $P$-wave channel at high temperature with maximally entropy method (MEM) and find no low-lying peak structure corresponding to χ_{c1} at 1.62T_c.

Nuclear force in Lattice QCD

We perform the quenched lattice QCD analysis on the nuclear force (baryon-baryon interactions). We employ $20^3\times 24$ lattice at $β=5.7$ ($a\simeq 0.19$ fm) with the standard gauge action and the Wilson quark action with the hopping parameters $κ=0.1600, 0.1625, 0.1650$, and generate about 200 gauge configurations. We measure the temporal correlators of the two-baryon system which consists of heavy-light-light quarks. We extract the inter-baryon force as a function of the relative distance $r$. We also evaluate the contribution to the nuclear force from each ``Feynman diagram'' such as the quark-exchange diagram individually, and single out the roles of Pauli-blocking effects or quark exchanges in the inter-baryon interactions.

Anisotropic lattice QCD studies of penta-quarks and tetra-quarks

Anisotropic lattice QCD studies of penta-quarks(5Q) with J^P=1/2^\pm and 3/2^{\pm} are presented at the quenched level together with tetra-quarks(4Q). The standard gauge action at β=5.75 and O(a) improved quark (clover) action with κ=0.1410(0.010)0.1440 are employed on the anisotropic lattice with the renormalized anisotropy a_s/a_t = 4. The ``hybrid boundary condition(HBC)'' is adopted to discriminate a compact resonance state from scattering states. Only massive 5Q states are found for J^P=1/2^+ and 3/2^{\pm}, which cannot be identified as Θ^+(1540). A low-lying 5Q state is found for J^P=1/2^- at m_{5Q}\simeq 1.75 GeV, which however turns out to be an NK scattering state through the HBC analysis. A preliminary result for 4Q states is presented suggesting an existence of a compact 4Q resonance at m_{4Q} \simeq 1.1 GeV in the idealized SU(4)_f chiral limit.

Tetraquark and Pentaquark Systems in Lattice QCD

Motivated by the recent experimental discoveries of multi-quark candidates, e.g., the $Θ^+(1540)$, we study multi-quark systems in lattice QCD. First, we perform accurate mass measurements of low-lying 5Q states with $J=1/2$ and I=0 in both positive- and negative-parity channels in anisotropic lattice QCD. The lowest positive-parity 5Q state is found to have a large mass of about 2.24GeV after the chiral extrapolation. To single out the compact 5Q state from $NK$ scattering states, we develop a new method with the hybrid-boundary condition (HBC), and find no evidence of the compact 5Q state below 1.75GeV in the negative-parity channel. Second, we perform the first study of the multi-quark potential in lattice QCD to clarify the inter-quark interaction in multi-quark systems. The 5Q potential $V_{\rm 5Q}$ for the QQ-${\rm \bar{Q}}$-QQ system is found to be well described by the ``OGE Coulomb plus multi-Y Ansatz": the sum of the one-gluon-exchange (OGE) Coulomb term and the multi-Y-type linear term based on the flux-tube picture. The 4Q potential $V_{\rm 4Q}$ for the QQ-${\rm \bar{Q}\bar{Q}}$ system is also described by the OGE Coulomb plus multi-Y Ansatz, when QQ and $\rm \bar Q \bar Q$ are well separated. The 4Q system is described as a "two-meson" state with disconnected flux tubes, when the nearest quark and antiquark pair is spatially close. We observe a lattice-QCD evidence for the ``flip-flop'', i.e., the flux-tube recombination between the connected 4Q state and the ``two-meson'' state. On the confinement mechanism, the lattice QCD results indicate the flux-tube-type linear confinement in multi-quark hadrons.

Spin 3/2 Penta-quarks in anisotropic lattice QCD

A high-precision mass measurement for the pentaquark (5Q) Theta^+ in J^P=3/2^{\pm} channel is performed in anisotropic quenched lattice QCD using a large number of gauge configurations as N_{conf}=1000. We employ the standard Wilson gauge action at beta=5.75 and the O(a) improved Wilson (clover) quark action with kappa=0.1210(0.0010)0.1240 on a 12^3 \times 96 lattice with the renormalized anisotropy as a_s/a_t = 4. The Rarita-Schwinger formalism is adopted for the interpolating fields. Several types of the interpolating fields with isospin I=0 are examined such as (a) the NK^*-type, (b) the (color-)twisted NK^*-type, (c) a diquark-type. The chiral extrapolation leads to only massive states, i.e., m_{5Q} \simeq 2.1-2.2 GeV in J^P=3/2^- channel, and m_{5Q} = 2.4-2.6 GeV in J^P=3/2^+ channel. The analysis with the hybrid boundary condition(HBC) is performed to investigate whether these states are compact 5Q resonances or not. No low-lying compact 5Q resonance states are found below 2.1GeV.

Penta-quark in Anisotropic Lattice QCD

Penta-quark (5Q) baryons are studied using anisotropic lattice QCD for high-precision measurement of temporal correlators. A non-NK-type interpolating field is employed to study the 5Q states with J^P=1/2^{\pm} and I=0. In J^P=1/2^+ channel, the lowest-lying state is found at m_{5Q} \simeq 2.25 GeV, which is too massive to be identified as the Theta^+(1540). In J^P=1/2^- channel, the lowest-lying state is found at m_{5Q} \simeq 1.75 GeV. To distinguish a compact 5Q resonance state from an NK scattering state, a new method with ``hybrid boundary condition (HBC)'' is proposed. As a result of the HBC analysis, the observed state in the negative-parity channel turns out to be an $NK$ scattering state.

Anisotropic Lattice QCD Studies of Penta-quark Anti-decuplet

Anti-decuplet penta-quark baryon is studied with the quenched anisotropic lattice QCD for accurate measurement of the correlator. Both the positive and negative parity states are studied using a non-NK type interpolating field with I=0 and J=1/2. After the chiral extrapolation, the lowest positive parity state is found at m_{Theta} \simeq 2.25 GeV, which is too massive to be identified with the experimentally observed Theta^+(1540). The lowest negative parity state is found at m_{Theta}\simeq 1.75 GeV, which is rather close to the empirical value. To confirm that this state is a compact 5Q resonance, a new method with ``hybrid boundary condition (HBC)'' is proposed. The HBC analysis shows that the observed state in the negative parity channel is an NK scattering state.

Penta-Quark Anti-Decuplet in Anisotropic Lattice QCD

The penta-quark(5Q) Theta^+(1540) is studied in anisotropic lattice QCD with renormalized anisotropy a_s/a_t=4 for a high-precision measurement. Both the positive and the negative parity 5Q baryons are studied using a non-NK type interpolating field with I=0 and J=1/2. After the chiral extrapolation, the lowest positive parity state is found at m_{Theta}\simeq 2.25 GeV, which is too heavy to be identified with Theta^+(1540). In the negative parity channel, the lowest energy state is found at m_{Theta}\simeq 1.75 GeV. Although it is rather close to the empirical value, it is considered to be an NK scattering state rather than a localized resonance state.

Detailed analysis of the gluonic excitation in the three-quark system in lattice QCD

We study the excited-state potential and the gluonic excitation in the static three-quark (3Q) system using SU(3) lattice QCD with $16^3\times 32$ at $β$=5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. For about 100 different patterns of spatially-fixed 3Q systems, we accurately extract the excited-state potential $V_{\rm 3Q}^{\rm e.s.}$ together with the ground-state potential $V_{\rm 3Q}^{\rm g.s.}$ by diagonalizing the QCD Hamiltonian in the presence of three quarks. The gluonic excitation energy $ΔE_{\rm 3Q} \equiv V_{\rm 3Q}^{\rm e.s.}-V_{\rm 3Q}^{\rm g.s.}$ is found to be about 1 GeV at the typical hadronic scale. This large gluonic-excitation energy is conjectured to give a physical reason of the success of the quark model for low-lying hadrons even without explicit gluonic modes. We investigate the functional form of $ΔE_{\rm 3Q}$ in terms of the 3Q location. The lattice data of $ΔE_{\rm 3Q}$ are relatively well reproduced by the ``inverse Mercedes Ansatz'' with the ``modified Y-type flux-tube length'', which indicates that the gluonic-excitation mode is realized as a complicated bulk excitation of the whole 3Q system.

Penta-quark baryon in anisotropic lattice QCD

The penta-quark(5Q) baryon is studied in anisotropic quenched lattice QCD with renormalized anisotropy a_s/a_t=4 for a high-precision mass measurement. The standard Wilson action at beta=5.75 and the O(a) improved Wilson quark action with kappa=0.1210(0.0010)0.1240 are employed on a 12^3 \times 96 lattice. Contribution of excited states is suppressed by using a smeared source. We investigate both the positive- and negative-parity 5Q baryons with I=0 and spin J=1/2 using a non-NK-type interpolating field. After chiral extrapolation, the lowest positive-parity state is found to have a mass, m_{Theta}=2.25 GeV, which is much heavier than the experimentally observed Theta^+(1540). The lowest negative-parity 5Q appears at m_{Theta}=1.75 GeV, which is near the s-wave NK threshold. To distinguish spatially-localized 5Q resonances from NK scattering states, we propose a new general method imposing a ``Hybrid Boundary Condition (HBC)'', where the NK threshold is artificially raised without affecting compact five-quark states. The study using the HBC method shows that the negative-parity state observed on the lattice is not a compact 5Q but an s-wave NK-scattering state.

A Remark on the Large Difference between the Glueball Mass and T(C) in Quenched QCD

The lattice QCD studies indicate that the critical temperature $T_c \simeq 260-280$ MeV of the deconfinement phase transition in quenched QCD is considerably smaller than the lowest-lying glueball mass $m_{\rm G} \simeq 1500-1700$ MeV, i.e., $ T_c \ll m_{\rm G}$. As a consequence of this large difference, the thermal excitation of the glueball in the confinement phase is strongly suppressed by the statistical factor as $e^{-m_{\rm G}/T_c} \simeq 0.00207$ even near $T \simeq T_c$. We consider its physical implication, and argue the abnormal feature of the deconfinement phase transition in quenched QCD from the statistical viewpoint. To appreciate this, we demonstrate a statistical argument of the QCD phase transition using the recent lattice QCD data. From the phenomenological relation among $T_c$ and the glueball mass, the deconfinement transition is found to take place in quenched QCD before a reasonable amount of glueballs is thermally excited. In this way, quenched QCD reveals a question ``what is the trigger of the deconfinement phase transition ?''
