Properties of a relativistic equation of state for collapse-driven supernovae

We study characteristics of the relativistic equation of state (EOS) for collapse-driven supernovae, which is derived by relativistic nuclear many body theory. Recently the relativistic EOS table has become available as a new complete set of physical EOS for numerical simulations of supernova explosion. We examine this EOS table by using general relativistic hydrodynamics of the gravitational collapse and bounce of supernova cores. In order to study dense matter in dynamical situation, we perform simplified calculations of core collapse and bounce by following adiabatic collapse with the fixed electron fraction for a series of progenitor models. This is intended to give us ``approximate models'' of prompt explosion. We investigate the profiles of thermodynamical quantities and the compositions during collapse and bounce. We also perform the calculations with the Lattimer-Swesty EOS to compare the properties of dense matter. As a measure of the stiffness of the EOS, we examine the explosion energy of the prompt explosion with electron capture totally suppressed. We study the derivative of the thermodynamical quantities obtained by the relativistic EOS to discuss the convective condition in neutron-rich environment, which may be important in the delayed explosion.

Ac Susceptibility and Static Magnetization Measurements of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at Small Magnetic Fields and Ultra Low Temperatures

The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid behavior. The results imply the magnetic transition temperature in undoped CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ is very close to absolute 0 K. The possibility for proximity of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to the quantum critical point without any doping is discussed.

On the hyperfine interaction in rare-earth Van Vleck paramagnets at high magnetic fields

An influence of high magnetic fields on hyperfine interaction in the rare-earth ions with non-magnetic ground state (Van Vleck ions) is theoretically investigated for the case of $Tm^{3+}$ ion in axial symmetrical crystal electric field (ethylsulphate crystal). It is shown that magnetic-field induced distortions of $4f$-electron shell lead to essential changes in hyperfine magnetic field at the nucleus. The proposed theoretical model is in agreement with recent experimental data.

R-Process Nucleosynthesis In Neutrino-Driven Winds From A Typical Neutron Star With M = 1.4 Msun

We study the effects of the outer boundary conditions in neutrino-driven winds on the r-process nucleosynthesis. We perform numerical simulations of hydrodynamics of neutrino-driven winds and nuclear reaction network calculations of the r-process. As an outer boundary condition of hydrodynamic calculations, we set a pressure upon the outermost layer of the wind, which is approaching toward the shock wall. Varying the boundary pressure, we obtain various asymptotic thermal temperature of expanding material in the neutrino-driven winds for resulting nucleosynthesis. We find that the asymptotic temperature slightly lower than those used in the previous studies of the neutrino-driven winds can lead to a successful r-process abundance pattern, which is in a reasonable agreement with the solar system r-process abundance pattern even for the typical proto-neutron star mass Mns ~ 1.4 Msun. A slightly lower asymptotic temperature reduces the charged particle reaction rates and the resulting amount of seed elements and lead to a high neutron-to-seed ratio for successful r-process. This is a new idea which is different from the previous models of neutrino-driven winds from very massive (Mns ~ 2.0 Msun) and compact (Rns ~ 10 km) neutron star to get a short expansion time and a high entropy for a successful r-process abundance pattern. Although such a large mass is sometimes criticized from observational facts on a neutron star mass, we dissolve this criticism by reconsidering the boundary condition of the wind. We also explore the relation between the boundary condition and neutron star mass, which is related to the progenitor mass, for successful r-process.

Nonlocal Effects and Shrinkage of the Vortex Core Radius in YNi2B2C Probed by muSR

The magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of YNi2B2C has been probed by muon spin rotation (muSR). The analysis based on the London model with nonlocal corrections shows that the vortex lattice has changed from hexagonal to square with increasing magnetic field H. At low fields the vortex core radius, rho_v(H), decreases with increasing H much steeper than what is expected from the sqrt(H) behavior of the Sommerfeld constant gamma(H), strongly suggesting that the anomaly in gamma(H) primarily arises from the quasiparticle excitations outside the vortex cores.

r-Process in Prompt Supernova Explosions Revisited

We reanalyze $r$-process nucleosynthesis in the neutron-rich ejecta from a prompt supernova explosion of a low-mass (11 M$_\odot$) progenitor. A pompt explosion is not yet ruled out as a possibility for low-mass supernova progenitors. Moreover, there is mounting evidence that a new $r$-process site may be required. Hence, we assume that a prompt explosion can occur and make a study of r-process nucleosynthesis in the supernova ejecta. To achieve a prompt explosion we have performed a general relativistic hydrodynamic simulation of adiabatic collapse and bounce using a relativistic nuclear-matter equation of state. The electron fraction $Y_e$ during the collapse was fixed at the initial-model value. The size of the inner collapsing core was then large enough to enable a prompt explosion to occur. Adopting the calculated trajectories of promptly ejected material, we explicitly computed the burst of neutronization due to electron captures on free protons in the photodissociated ejecta after the passage of the shock. The thermal and compositional evolution of the resulting neutron-rich ejecta originating from near the surface of proto-neutron star was obtained. These were used in nuclear reaction network calculations to evaluate the products of $r$-process nucleosynthesis. We find that, unlike earlier studies, the amount of $r$-process material ejected per supernova is quite consistent with observed galactic $r$-process abundances. Furthermore, the computed $r$-process abundances are in good agreement with Solar abundances of $r$-process elements for A$> 100$. This suggests that prompt supernovae are still a viable $r$-process site. Such events may be responsible for the abundances of the heaviest $r$-process nuclei.

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Sc Metal

The nuclear magnetic relaxation in scandium metal is investigated at liquid helium temeprature for both single crystal and powder samples. The obtained temperature and field dependence of the Korringa constant are described by the means of the spin uctuation theory. It is shown that one of the reason for the high field decreasing of the relaxation rate is the quenching of spin uctuations. The other possible reason is the magnetic impurity influence. The reasons of the existing variations of the Korringa constant are discussed. The possible sources of non-single exponential relaxation are investigated.

Supersymmetric Gauge Anomaly with General Homotopic Paths

We use the method of Banerjee, Banerjee and Mitra and minimal homotopy paths to compute the consistent gauge anomaly for several superspace models of SSYM coupled to matter. We review the derivation of the anomaly for N=1 in four dimensions and then discuss the anomaly for two-dimensional models with (2,0) supersymmetry.

Topological Obstruction in Block-spin Transformations

Block-spin transformations from a fine lattice to a coarse one are shown to give rise to a one-to-one correspondence between the zero-modes of the Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac operators. The index is then preserved under the blocking process. Such a one-to-one correspondence is violated and the block-spin transformation becomes necessarily ill-defined when the absolute value of the index is larger than 2rN, where N is the number of the sites on the coarse lattice and r is the dimension of the gauge group representation of the fermion variables.

Topological Charge of Lattice Abelian Gauge Theory

Configuration space of abelian gauge theory on a periodic lattice becomes topologically disconnected by excising exceptional gauge field configurations. It is possible to define a U(1) bundle from the nonexceptional link variables by a smooth interpolation of the transition functions. The lattice analogue of Chern character obtained by a cohomological technique based on the noncommutative differential calculus is shown to give a topological charge related to the topological winding number of the U(1) bundle.

Hydrodynamical study of neutrino-driven wind as an r-process site

We study the neutrino-driven wind from the proto-neutron star by the general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations. We examine the properties of the neutrino-driven wind to explore the possibility of the r-process nucleosynthesis. The numerical simulations with the neutrino heating and cooling processes are performed with the assumption of the constant neutrino luminosity by using realistic profiles of the proto-neutron star (PNS) as well as simplified models. The dependence on the mass of PNS and the neutrino luminosity is studied systematically. Comparisons with the analytic treatment in the previous studies are also done. In the cases with the realistic PNS, we found that the entropy per baryon and the expansion time scale are neither high nor short enough for the r-process within the current assumptions. On the other hand, we found that the expansion time scale obtained by the hydrodynamical simulations is systematically shorter than that in the analytic solutions due to our proper treatment of the equation of state. This fact might lead to the increase of the neutron-to-seed ratio, which is suitable for the r-process in the neutrino-driven wind. Indeed, in the case of massive and compact proto-neutron stars with high neutrino luminosities, the expansion time scale is found short enough in the hydrodynamical simulations and the r-process elements up to A ~ 200 are produced in the r-process network calculation.

Field Theory on the von Neumann Lattice and the Quantized Hall Conductance of Bloch Electrons

We construct useful sets of one-particle states in the quantum Hall system based on the von Neumann lattice. Using the set of momentum states, we develop a field-theoretical formalism and apply the formalism to the system subjected to a periodic potential. The topological formula of the Hall conductance written by the winding number of propagator is generalized to Bloch electrons. The relation between the winding number and the Chern number is clarified.

Prepotentials, Bi-linear Forms on Periods and Enhanced Gauge Symmetries in Type-II Strings

We construct a bi-linear form on the periods of Calabi-Yau spaces. These are used to obtain the prepotentials around conifold singularities in type-II strings compactified on Calabi-Yau space. The explicit construction of the bi-linear forms is achieved for the one-moduli models as well as two moduli models with K3-fibrations where the enhanced gauge symmetry is known to be observed at conifold locus. We also show how these bi-linear forms are related with the existence of flat coordinates. We list the resulting prepotentials in two moduli models around the conifold locus, which contains alpha' corrections of 4-D N=2 SUSY SU(2) Yang-Mills theory as the stringy effect.

Quantum Hall Dynamics on von Neumann Lattice

Quantum Hall Dynamics is formulated on von Neumann lattice representation where electrons in Landau levels are defined on lattice sites and are treated systematically like lattice fermions. We give a proof of the integer Hall effect, namely the Hall conductance is the winding number of the propagator in the momentum space and is quantized exactly as integer multiple of ${e^2}/h$ in quantum Hall regime of the system of interactions and disorders. This shows that a determination of the fine structure constant from integer quantum Hall effect is in fact possible. We present also a unified mean field theory of the fractional Hall effect for the in-compressible quantum liquid states based on flux condensation and point out that the known Hofstadter butterfly spectrum of the tight binding model has a deep connection with the fractional Hall effect of the continuum electrons. Thus two of the most intriguing and important physical phenomena of recent years, the integer Hall effect and fractional Hall effect are studied and are solved partly by von Neumann lattice representation.

Duality Relation among Periodic Potential Problems in the Lowest Landau Level

Using a momentum representation of a magnetic von Neumann lattice, we study a two-dimensional electron in a uniform magnetic field and obtain one-particle spectra of various periodic short-range potential problems in the lowest Landau level. We find that the energy spectra satisfy a duality relation between a period of the potential and a magnetic length. The energy spectra consist of the Hofstadter-type bands and flat bands. We also study the connection between a periodic short-range potential problem and a tight-binding model.

The fate of a neutron star just below the minimum mass: does it explode?

First results of numerical simulations are presented which compute the dynamical evolution of a neutron star with a mass slightly below the minimum stable mass by means of a new implicit (general relativistic) hydrodynamic code. We show that such a star first undergoes a phase of quasi-static expansion, caused by slow nuclear $β$-decays, lasting for about 20 seconds, but then explodes violently. The kinetic energy of the explosion is around $10^{49} erg$, the peak luminosity in electron anti-neutrinos is of order $10^{52} erg/s$, and the thermodynamic conditions of the expanding matter are favorable for r-process nucleosynthesis. These results are obtained for the Harrison-Wheeler equation of state and a simple and, possibly, unrealistic treatment of $β$-decay rates and nuclear fission, which were adopted for comparison with previous works. However, we do not expect that the outcome will change qualitatively if more recent nuclear input physics used. Although our study does not rely on a specific scenario ofhow a neutron star starting from a bigger (and stable) masscan reach the dynamical phase, we assume that the final mass-loss event happens on a very short time scale, i.e., on a time scale shorter than a sound-crossing time, by removing a certain amount of mass as an initial perturbation. This assumption implies that the star has no time to adjust its nuclear composition to the new mass mass through a sequence of quasi-equilibria. In the latter case, however, there exists no stable configuration below the minimum mass, because the equation of state of fully catalyzed matter is too soft. Therefore, the dynamics of the explosion will not be too different from what have obtained if different initial perturbations are assumed.

Absorption Probability of De Sitter Horizon for Massless Fields with Spin

The evaluation of the absorption coefficients are important for particle emission caused by Hawking radiation. In the case of cosmological particle emission from the event horizon in De Sitter space, it is known that the scalar wave functions are solved in terms of Legendre functions. For fields with higher spin, the solution has been examined with low frequency approximation. We shows that the radial equations of the fields with spin $0,1/2,1$ and $2$ can be solved analytically in terms of the hypergeometric functions. We calculate the absorption probability using asymptotic expansion for high frequency limit. It turns out that the absorption coefficients are universal to all bosonic fields; They depend only on the angular momentum and not spin. In the case of spin $1/2$ fermions, we can also find non-vanishing absorption probability in contrast to the previously known result.

Classically Integrable Cosmological Models with a Scalar Field

New classes of classically integrable models in the cosmological theories with a scalar field are obtained by using freedoms of defining time and fields. In particular, some models with the sum of exponential potentials in the flat spatial metric are shown to be integrable. The model with the Sine-Gordon potential can be solved in terms of analytic continuation of the non-periodic Toda field theory.
