Disorder Effects in the Bipolaron System Ti$_{4}$O$_{7}$ Studied by Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have performed a photoemission study of Ti$_{4}$O$_{7}$ around its two transition temperatures so as to cover the metallic, high-temperature insulating (bipolaron-liquid), and low-temperature insulating (bipolaron-crystal) phases. While the spectra of the low-temperature insulating phase show a finite gap at the Fermi level, the spectra of the high-temperature insulating phase are gapless, which is interpreted as a soft Coulomb gap due to dynamical disorder. We suggest that the spectra of the high-temperature disordered phase of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$, which exhibits a charge order-disorder transition (Verwey transition), can be interpreted in terms of a Coulomb gap.

Spin gap and magnetic coherence in a clean high-T_c superconductor

A notable aspect of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxides is the unconventional nature of the underlying paired-electron state. A direct manifestation of the unconventional state is a pairing energy - that is, the energy required to remove one electron from the superconductor - that varies (between zero and a maximum value) as a function of momentum or wavevector: the pairing energy for conventional superconductors is wavevector-independent. The wavefunction describing the superconducting state will include not only the pairing of charges, but also of the spins of the paired charges. Each pair is usually in the form of a spin singlet, so there will also be a pairing energy associated with transforming the spin singlet into the higher energy spin triplet form without necessarily unbinding the charges. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to determine the wavevector-dependence of spin pairing in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, the simplest high-temperature superconductor. We find that the spin pairing energy (or 'spin gap') is wavevector independent, even though superconductivity significantly alters the wavevector dependence of the spin fluctuations at higher energies.

Anisotropic spin freezing in the S=1/2 zigzag ladder compound SrCuO2

Using magnetic neutron scattering we characterize an unusual low temperature phase in orthorhombic SrCuO2. The material contains zigzag spin ladders formed by pairs of S=1/2 chains (J=180 meV) coupled through a weak frustrated interaction |J'|<0.1J. At T<Tc1=5.0(4)K an elastic peak develops in a gapless magnetic excitation spectrum indicating spin freezing on a time scale larger than 200 picoseconds. While the frozen state has long range commensurate antiferromagnetic order along the chains with the correlation length exceeding 200 lattice periods along the c-axis and a substantial correlation length of 60(25) spacings along the a-axis perpendicular to the zigzag plane, only 2 lattice units are correlated along the b-axis which is the direction of the frustrated interactions. The frozen magnetic moment of each Cu ion is very small, 0.033(7) Bohr magneton even at T=0.35K, and has unusual temperature dependence with a cusp at Tc2=1.5K reminiscent of a phase transition. We argue that slow dynamics of stripe-like cooperative magnetic defects in tetragonal a-c planes yield this anisotropic frozen state.

Quasiparticle Density of States of Clean and Dirty s-Wave Superconductors in the Vortex State

The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the vortex state has been probed by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields (H) for clean and dirty s-wave superconductors, Y(Ni1-xPtx)2B2C and Nb1-xTaxSe2. We find that the quasiparticle DOS per vortex is appreciably H-dependent in the clean-limit superconductors, while it is H-independent in the dirty superconductors as expected from a conventional rigid normal electron core picture. We discuss possible origins for our observations in terms of the shrinking of the vortex core radius with increasing H.

Charge-Stripe Ordering From Local Octahedral Tilts: Underdoped and Superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 (0 < x < 0.30)

The local structure of La2-xSrxCuO4, for 0 < x < 0.30, has been investigated using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of neutron powder diffraction data. The local octahedral tilts are studied to look for evidence of [110] symmetry (i.e., LTT-symmetry) tilts locally, even though the average tilts have [010] symmetry (i.e., LTO-symmetry) in these compounds. We argue that this observation would suggest the presence of local charge-stripe order. We show that the tilts are locally LTO in the undoped phase, in agreement with the average crystal structure. At non-zero doping the PDF data are consistent with the presence of local tilt disorder in the form of a mixture of LTO and LTT local tilt directions and a distribution of local tilt magnitudes. We present topological tilt models which qualitatively explain the origin of tilt disorder in the presence of charge stripes and show that the PDF data are well explained by such a mixture of locally small and large amplitude tilts.
