Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy of Vortices in LiFeAs

We investigate vortices in LiFeAs using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Zero-field tunneling spectra show two superconducting gaps without detectable spectral weight near the Fermi energy, evidencing fully-gapped multi-band superconductivity. We image vortices in a wide field range from 0.1 T to 11 T by mapping the tunneling conductance at the Fermi energy. A quasi-hexagonal vortex lattice at low field contains domain boundaries which consist of alternating vortices with unusual coordination numbers of 5 and 7. With increasing field, the domain boundaries become ill-defined, resulting in a uniformly disordered vortex matter. Tunneling spectra taken at the vortex center are characterized by a sharp peak just below the Fermi energy, apparently violating particlehole symmetry. The image of each vortex shows energy-dependent 4-fold anisotropy which may be associated with the anisotropy of the Fermi surface. The vortex radius shrinks with decreasing temperature and becomes smaller than the coherence length estimated from the upper critical field. This is direct evidence of the Kramer-Pesch effect expected in a clean superconductor.

Two-dimensional Heisenberg behavior of Jeff = 1/2 isospins in the paramagnetic state of spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

Dynamical correlations of Jeff = 1/2 isospins in the paramagnetic state of spin-orbital Mott insu- lator Sr2IrO4 was revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffuse scattering. We found two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuation with a large in-plane correlation length exceeding 100 lattice spacings at even 20 K above the mangnetic ordering temperature. In marked contrast to the naive expecta- tion of strong magnetic anisotropy associated with an enhanced spin-orbit coupling, we discovered isotropic isospin correlation that is well described by the two-dimensional S = 1/2 quantum Heisen- berg model. The estimated antiferromagnetic coupling constant as large as J ~ 0.1 eV that is comparable to the small Mott gap (< 0.5 eV) points the weak and marginal Mott character of this spin-orbital entangled system.

Metal-insulator transition and superconductivity induced by Rh doping in binary Ru Pnictides RuPn (Pn = P, As and Sb)

Binary ruthenium pnictides, RuP and RuAs, with an orthorhombic MnP structure, were found to show a metal to a non-magnetic insulator transition at TMI = 270 K and 200 K, respectively. In the metallic region above TMI, a structural phase transition, accompanied by a weak anomaly in the resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility, indicative of a pseudo-gap formation, was identified at Ts = 330 K and 280 K, respectively. These two transitions were suppressed by substituting Ru with Rh. We found superconductivity with a maximum Tc = 3.7 K and Tc =1.8 K in a narrow composition range around the critical point for the pseudo-gap phase, Rh content xc = 0.45 and xc = 0.25 for Ru1-xRhxP and Ru1-xRhxAs, respectively, which may provide us with a novel non-magnetic route to superconductivity at a quantum critical point.

Transport and Thermodynamic Evidence for a Marginal Fermi Liquid State in ZrZn$_2$

Measurements of low temperature transport and thermodynamic properties have been used to characterize the non-Fermi liquid state of the itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn$_2$. We observe a $T^{5/3}$ temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity at zero field, which becomes $T^2$ like in an applied field of 9 T. In zero field we also measured the thermal conductivity, and we see a novel linear in $T$ dependence of the difference between the thermal and electrical resistivities. Heat capacity measurements, also at zero field, reveal an upturn in the electronic contribution at low temperatures when the phonon term is subtracted. Taken together, we argue that these properties are consistent with a marginal Fermi liquid state which is predicted by a mean-field model of enhanced spin fluctuations on the border of ferromagnetism in three dimensions. We compare our data to quantitative predictions and establish this model as a compelling theoretical framework for understanding ZrZn$_2$.

Fermi-surface reconstruction by stripe order in cuprate superconductors

Quantum oscillations have revealed the presence of a small pocket in the Fermi surface of the cuprate superconductor YBCO, whose nature and origin are the subject of much debate. Interpretations include electron and hole pockets; scenarios include Fermi-surface reconstruction by antiferromagnetism, d-density-wave order, and stripe order. Here we report quantum oscillations in the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of YBCO and show, from the magnitude and sign of the Seebeck coefficient, that they come from an electron pocket. Using measurements of the Seebeck coefficient as a function of hole doping p, we show that the evolution of the Fermi surface in YBCO is the same as in Eu-LSCO, a cuprate where stripe order (a modulation of spin and charge densities) is well established. The electron pocket is most prominent where stripe order is strongest, at p = 1/8. This shows that Fermi-surface reconstruction is a generic mechanism of underdoped cuprates, intimately related to stripe order.

Quasi-one-dimensional spin dynamics in LiV2O4: 1D-to-3D crossover as a possible origin of heavy fermion state

Spin fluctuation in LiV2O4 is revisited by examining the earlier result of muon spin rotation/ relaxation measurements. Instead of a relationship for the localized electron limit, one for itinerant electron systems between muon depolarization rate and spin fluctuation rate (ν_D) is employed to re-analyze data, which reveals that νD varies linearly with temperature (ν_D {\propto} T) over a range 10^8-10^{12} /s for 0.02 {\le} T < 102 K. Such a linear-T behavior as well as the magnitude of ν_D is fully consistent with that of the magnetic relaxation rate previously observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), demonstrating that μSR and INS have a common time window over the fluctuation spectrum. The linear-T dependence of ν_D is understood as a specific feature predicted by a Hubbard model for intersecting one-dimensional (1D) chains. This quasi-1D character, which is co-existent with enhanced uniform susceptibility at low temperatures, supports the scenario of 1D-to-3D crossover for the microscopic origin of heavy-fermion behavior in LiV2O4.

Bi-directional ultrafast electric-field gating of interlayer transport in a cuprate superconductor

In cuprate superconductors, tunneling between planes makes possible three-dimensional coherent transport. However, the interlayer tunnelling amplitude is reduced when an order-parameter phase gradient between planes is established. As such, c-axis superconductivity can be weakened if a strong electric field is applied along the c axis. We use high-field single-cycle terahertz pulses to gate interlayer coupling in La1.84Sr0.16CuO4. We induce ultrafast oscillations between superconducting and resistive states and switch the plasmon response on and off, without reducing the density of Cooper pairs. Indeed, in-plane superconductivity remains unperturbed throughout, revealing a non-equilibrium state in which the dimensionality of the superconductor is time dependent. The gating frequency is determined by the electric field strength, in the spirit of the ac Josephson effect. Non-dissipative, bi-directional gating of superconductive coupling is of interest for device applications in ultrafast nanoelectronics. It is also a new example of nonlinear terahertz physics, applicable to nanoplasmonics and active metamaterials.

Femtosecond core level photoemision spectroscopy on 1T-TaS2 using 60 eV laser source

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trPES) can directly detect transient electronic structure, thus bringing out its promising potential to clarify nonequilibrium processes arising in condensed matters. Here we report the result of core-level (CL) trPES on 1T-TaS2, realized by developing a high-intensity 60 eV laser obtained by high-order harmonic (HH) generation. Ta4f CL-trPES offers the transient amplitude of the charge-density-wave (CDW), via the site-selective and real-time observation of Ta electrons. The present result indicates an ultrafast photoinduced melting and recovery of CDW amplitude, followed by a peculiar long-life oscillation (i.e. collective amplitudon excitation) accompanying the transfer of 0.01 electrons among adjacent Ta atoms. CL-trPES offers a broad range of opportunities for investigating the ultrafast atom-specific electron dynamics in photo-related phenomena of interest.

Phonon, Two-Magnon and Electronic Raman Scattering of Fe1+yTe1-xSex

We have measured Raman scattering spectra of single-crystalline FeTe0.6Se0.4 (T_c ~ 14.5 K) and its parent compound Fe1.074Te at various temperatures. In the parent compound Fe1.074Te, A1g and B1g modes have been observed at 157.5 and 202.3 cm-1, respectively, at 5 K. These frequencies qualitatively agree with the calculated results. Two-magnon excitation has been observed around 2300 cm-1 for both compounds. Temperature dependence between the electronic Raman spectra below and above T_c has been observed and 2Δand 2Δ/k_BT_C have been estimated as 5.0 meV and 4.0, respectively.

Strong 3p -T1u Hybridization in Ar@C60

Multilayers of fullerenes with and without endohedral Ar units, C60 and Ar@C60, were investigated by photoemission and density functional theory. The stoichiometry and the endohedral nature of Ar is checked by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron diffraction. Valence band ultraviolet photoemission spectra show a strong hybridisation of the Ar 3p valence shell with the 6T1u molecular orbital of C60. A hybridisation gap of 1.6 +/- 0.2 eV is found. This is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) that predicts 1.47 eV, and indicates Ar@C60 to be a noble gas compound with a strong coupling between Ar and the C60 cage. No giant Ar photoemission cross section as predicted for the gas phase in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 243003 (2007)] was found.

Reply to Comment on "Unconventional s-wave superconductivity in Fe(Se,Te)"

Mazin and Singh comment that the peaks in the Fourier-transformed spectroscopic maps of Fe(Se,Te) are not related to the quasi-particle-interference (QPI) but may be Bragg peaks associated with chalcogen lattice and possible surface reconstruction which would be triggered by surface-induced spin-density wave. We show that the peaks are too broad to be assigned as Bragg peaks and are consistent with QPI.

Magnetic ground state of pyrochlore oxides close to metal-insulator boundary probed by muon spin rotation

Magnetism of ruthernium pyrochlore oxides A2Ru2O7 (A = Hg, Cd, Ca), whose electronic properties within a localized ion picture are characterized by non-degenerate t2g orbitals (Ru5+, 4d3) and thereby subject to geometrical frustration, has been investigated by muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique. The A cation (mostly divalent) was varied to examine the effect of covalency (Hg > Cd > Ca) on their electronic property. In a sample with A = Hg that exhibits a clear metal-insulator (MI) transition below >> 100 K (which is associated with a weak structural transition), a nearly commensurate magnetic order is observed to develop in accordance with the MI transition. Meanwhile, in the case of A = Cd where the MI transition is suppressed to the level of small anomaly in the resistivity, the local field distribution probed by muon indicates emergence of a certain magnetic inhomogeneity below » 30 K. Moreover, in Ca2Ru2O7 that remains metallic, we find a highly inhomogeneous local magnetism below >>25 K that comes from randomly oriented Ru moments and thus described as a "frozen spin liquid" state. The systematic trend of increasing randomness and itinerant character with decreasing covalency suggests close relationship between these two characters. As a reference for the effect of orbital degeneracy and associated Jahn-Teller instability, we examine a tetravalent ruthernium pyrochlore, Tl2Ru2O7 (Ru4+, 4d4), where the result of muSR indicates a non-magnetic ground state that is consistent with the formation of the Haldane chains suggested by neutron diffraction experiment.

Momentum-Resolved Landau-Level Spectroscopy of Dirac Surface State in Bi2Se3

We investigate Dirac fermions on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Landau levels (LLs) are observed in the tunneling spectra in a magnetic field. In contrast to LLs of conventional electrons, a field independent LL appears at the Dirac point, which is a hallmark of Dirac fermions. A scaling analysis of LLs based on the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition allowed us to determine the dispersion of the surface band. Near the Fermi energy, fine peaks mixed with LLs appear in the spectra, which may be responsible for the anomalous magneto-fingerprint effect [J. G. Checkelsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 246601 (2009)].

Evidence for a correlated insulator to antiferromagnetic metal transition in CrN

We investigate the electronic structure of Chromium Nitride (CrN) across the first-order magneto-structural transition at T_N ~ 286 K. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy shows a gap in the 3d partial density of states at the Fermi level and an On-site Coulomb energy U ~ 4.5 eV, indicating strong electron-electron correlations. Bulk-sensitive high resolution (6 meV) laser photoemission reveals a clear Fermi edge indicating an antiferromagnetic metal below T_N. Hard x-ray Cr 2p core-level spectra show T-dependent changes across T_N which originate from screening due to coherent states as substantiated by cluster model calculations using the experimentally observed U. The electrical resistivity confirms an insulator above T_N (E_g ~ 70 meV) which becomes a disordered metal below T_N. The results indicate CrN transforms from a correlated insulator to an antiferromagnetic metal, coupled to the magneto-structural transition.

Nernst and Seebeck Coefficients of the Cuprate SuperconductorYBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$: A Study of Fermi Surface Reconstruction

The Seebeck and Nernst coefficients $S$ and $ν$ of the cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) were measured in a single crystal with doping $p = 0.12$ in magnetic fields up to H = 28 T. Down to T=9 K, $ν$ becomes independent of field by $H \simeq 30$ T, showing that superconducting fluctuations have become negligible. In this field-induced normal state, $S/T$ and $ν/T$ are both large and negative in the $T \to 0$ limit, with the magnitude and sign of $S/T$ consistent with the small electron-like Fermi surface pocket detected previously by quantum oscillations and the Hall effect. The change of sign in $S(T)$ at $T \simeq 50$ K is remarkably similar to that observed in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$, La$_{2-x-y}$Nd$_y$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{2-x-y}$Eu$_y$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, where it is clearly associated with the onset of stripe order. We propose that a similar density-wave mechanism causes the Fermi surface reconstruction in YBCO.

Coherence factors in a high-Tc cuprate probed by quasi-particle scattering off vortices

Coherence factors are a hallmark of superconductivity as a pair-condensation phenomenon. When electrons pair, quasi-particles develop an acute sensitivity to different types of scattering potential, described by the appearance of coherence factors in the scattering amplitudes. While the effects of coherence factors are well established in isotropic superconductors, they are much harder to detect in their anisotropic counterparts, such as high-Tc cuprates. Here we demonstrate a new approach which highlights the momentum-dependent coherence factors in Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2. Using Fourier-transform scanning tunnelling spectroscopy to detect quasi-particle interference effects, our experiments reveal a magnetic-field dependence in quasi-particle scattering which is sensitive to the sign of the anisotropic gap. This result can be understood in terms of d-wave coherence factors and it exposes the role of vortices as quasi-particle scattering centers. We also show that a magnetic field gives rise to an enlarged gapless region around the gap nodes.

Anomalous metallic state in the vicinity of Metal to Valence Bond Solid insulator transition in LiVS2

We investigate LiVS2 and LiVSe2 with a triangular lattice as itinerant analogues of LiVO2, known for the formation of valence bond solid (VBS) state out of S = 1 frustrated magnet. LiVS2, which is located at the border between a metal and a correlated insulator, shows a first ordered transition from a paramagnetic metal to a VBS insulator at Tc ~ 305 K upon cooling. The presence of VBS state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in the formation of VBS state. We argue that the high temperature metallic phase of LiVS2 has a pseudo-gap, likely originating from the VBS fluctuation. LiVSe2 was found to be a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K.

Evidence for Oxygen Holes due to d-p Rehybridization in Thermoelectric Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}

Soft-x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are employed to investigate the electronic structures of Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}. Similarly to the layered cobaltates such as Na_{1-x}CoO_{2}, a valence-band satellite feature (VBS) occurs at higher binding energy to the O 2p band. We find that the VBS resonates at the O 1s edge. Additionally, core absorption shows clear x dependence in the O 1s edge rather than in the Rh 3p edge. These results indicate that the holes in the initial state mainly have O 2p character presumably due to d-p rehybridizations affected by Sr^{2+} vacancy potentials. The resultant inhomogenous charge texture may have impact on the TE transport properties at low x.
