Magnetic field-induced quasiparticle excitation in Nb3Sn: Evidence for anisotropic s-wave pairing

The response of vortex state to the magnetic field in Nb3Sn is probed using muon spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transformation of vortex structure between hexagonal and squared lattice is observed over a relatively low field range of 2-3 Tesla. The gradual increase of the magnetic penetration depth with increasing field provides microscopic evidence for anisotropic (or multi-gapped) s-wave pairing suggested by the Raman scattering experiment. This result renders need for careful examination on the difference of electronic properties between Nb3Sn and V3Si.

Correlation between Superconducting Carrier Density and Transition Temperature in NbB$_{2+x}$

We report on the magnetic penetration depth, lambda, in a type II superconductor NbB_{2+x} determined by muon spin rotation method. We show in the sample with x=0.1 that lambda at 2.0 K is independent of an applied magnetic field. This suggests that the superconducting order parameter in NbB_{2+x} is isotropic, as expected for conventional BCS superconductors. Meanwhile, the superconducting carrier density (proportional to lambda^{-2}) exhibits an interesting tendency of increase with increasing T_c (where T_c varies with x). Possible origin of such behavior is discussed in comparison with the case of exotic superconductors.

Evidence for High-frequency Phonon Mediated S-wave Superconductivity : 11B-NMR Study of Al-doped MgB2

We report $^{11}$B-NMR study on Al-doped MgB$_2$ that addresses a possible mechanism for a high superconducting (SC) transition temperature ($T_c$) of $\sim 40$ K in recently discovered MgB$_2$. The result of nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the SC state revealed that the size in the SC gap is not changed by substituting Al for Mg. The reduction on $T_c$ by Al-doping is shown to be due to the decrease of $N(E_F)$. According to the McMillan equation, the experimental relation between $T_c$ and the relative change in $N(E_F)$ allowed us to estimate a characteristic phonon frequency $ω\sim 700$ K and an electron-phonon coupling constant $λ\sim 0.87$. These results suggest that the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in MgB$_2$ is mediated by the strong electron-phonon coupling with high-frequency phonons.

Micro-Raman scattering investigation of MgB2 and RB2 (R=Al, Mn, Nb and Ti)

Phonon spectra have been investigated by micro-Raman scattering from 290 to 20K. New peaks at 500 and 674 cm-1 appear below 250K in MgB2. These peaks are explained by the Fermi resonance, where Raman-active E2g intereacts with the overtone of E1u due to anhamonicity. Raman spectra of the isostructural RB2 (R=Al, Mn, Nb and Ti) have been also measured at 290K. The line width of E2g phonon of the superconductor MgB2 and NbB2 shows the broader than that of the non-superconductors. It is found that the anharmonicity of phonons is important for the superconductivity for MgB2.
