Tunable Exchange Interaction in Quantum Dot Devices

We theoretically discuss the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). When each QD having a local spin is coupled to the conduction electrons in semiconductors, an indirect exchange interaction, i.e., the RKKY interaction, is induced between two local spins. The RKKY interaction between QDs, which is mediated by the Fermi sea in semiconductors, is modulated by changing the Fermi energy, and the magnitude or even the sign of the exchange interaction can be tuned, which leads to a tunable magnetic transition in QD devices. We estimate the magnitude of the RKKY interaction in QDs as a function of the electron density and the inter-dot distance.

Multiphoton transitions in a macroscopic quantum two-state system

We have observed multiphoton transitions between two macroscopic quantum-mechanical superposition states formed by two opposite circulating currents in a superconducting loop with three Josephson junctions. Resonant peaks and dips of up to three-photon transitions were observed in spectroscopic measurements when the system was irradiated with a strong RF-photon field. The widths of the multiphoton absorption dips are shown to scale with the Bessel functions in agreement with theoretical predictions derived from the Bloch equation or from a spin-boson model.

DC-SQUID Sensitivity for Readout of Entangled State Quantum Bits

We propose a scheme for entangled state measurement at flux qubits (quantum bits) depending on the sensitivity measurement of a DC-SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device). The DC-SQUID is used as a flux qubit readout device. The switching current distribution of a DC-SQUID is sufficiently narrow to distinguish between two ground states of three Josephson junction qubits with a large mutual inductance between a qubit and the DC-SQUID. But discrimination between two ground states becomes difficult with the smaller mutual inductance that is preferable as regards of qubit coherence. However, we can employ averaging to increase the effective sensitivity. And we found that Bell-pair measurement can be performed with flux qubits to prove the existence of an entangled state over two qubits.

Josephson effects in a superconductor-normal metal mesoscopic structure with a dangling superconducting arm

We studied a mesoscopic cross-like normal metal structure connected to two superconducting (S) and two normal (N) reservoirs. We observed the Josephson effect under unusual conditions when there is no current through one of the two S/N interfaces. The potential difference between the S reservoirs was zero unless the voltage applied between S and N reservoirs exceeded a critical value although the electric potential in the N wire connecting the superconductors varied in a nonmonotonic way. The observed effects are discussed theoretically.

Circuit theory of multiple Andreev reflections in diffusive SNS junctions: the incoherent case

The incoherent regime of Multiple Andreev Reflections (MAR) is studied in long diffusive SNS junctions at applied voltages larger than the Thouless energy. Incoherent MAR is treated as a transport problem in energy space by means of a circuit theory for an equivalent electrical network. The current through NS interfaces is explained in terms of diffusion flows of electrons and holes through tunnel and Andreev resistors. These resistors in diffusive junctions play roles analogous to the normal and Andreev reflection coefficients in OTBK theory for ballistic junctions. The theory is applied to the subharmonic gap structure (SGS); simple analytical results are obtained for the distribution function and current spectral density for the limiting cases of resistive and transparent NS interfaces. In the general case, the exact solution is found in terms of chain-fractions, and the current is calculated numerically. SGS shows qualitatively different behavior for even and odd subharmonic numbers, and the maximum slopes of the differential resistance correspond to the gap subharmonics. The influence of inelastic scattering on the subgap anomalies of the differential resistance is analyzed.

Ballistic reflection at a side-gate in a superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor structure

We have fabricated a sub-micron-sized structure consisting of an InAs-based 2DEG, two narrow Nb leads and a gate, where the indirect ballistic transport between the non-oppositely superconducting contacts can be controlled by the voltage applied to the gate. This new kind of tuneable junction can be used for applications and allows several fundamental questions related to the transport mechanism to be studied. First results of experiments carried out in this respect are presented.

$π-$shifted magnetoconductance oscillations in mesoscopic superconducting-normal-heterostructures

Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of states at low energies.
