Spin dynamics and spin freezing behavior in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$ revealed by Ga-NMR, NQR and $μ$SR measurements

We have performed $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and muon spin rotation/resonance on the quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet (AFM) NiGa$_2$S$_4$, in order to investigate its spin dynamics and magnetic state at low temperatures. Although there exists only one crystallographic site for Ga in NiGa$_2$S$_4$, we found two distinct Ga signals by NMR and NQR. The origin of the two Ga signals is not fully understood, but possibly due to stacking faults along the c axis which induce additional broad Ga NMR and NQR signals with different local symmetries. We found the novel spin freezing occurring at $T_{\rm f}$, at which the specific heat shows a maximum, from a clear divergent behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ and nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_{2}$ measured by Ga-NQR as well as the muon spin relaxation rate $λ$. The main sharp NQR peaks exhibit a stronger tendency of divergence, compared with the weak broader spectral peaks, indicating that the spin freezing is intrinsic in NiGa$_2$S$_4$. The behavior of these relaxation rates strongly suggests that the Ni spin fluctuations slow down towards $T_{\rm f}$, and the temperature range of the divergence is anomalously wider than that in a conventional magnetic ordering. A broad structureless spectrum and multi-component $T_1$ were observed below 2 K, indicating that a static magnetic state with incommensurate magnetic correlations or inhomogeneously distributed moments is realized at low temperatures. However, the wide temperature region between 2 K and $T_{\rm f}$, where the NQR signal was not observed, suggests that the Ni spins do not freeze immediately below $T_{\rm f}$, but keep fluctuating down to 2 K with the MHz frequency range.

Low temperature specific heat of La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4} with U_{3}Ni_{4}Si_{4}-type structure

Low temperature specific heat has been investigated in a novel ternary superconductor La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4} with an U_{3}Ni_{4}Si_{4}-type structure consisting of the alternating BaAl_{4} (ThCr_{2}Si_{2})- and AlB$_{2}$-type layers. A comparative study with the related ThCr_{2}Si_{2}-type superconductor LaPd_{2}Ge_{2}, one of the layers in La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4}, is also presented. From the normal state specific heat, the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_{n} = 27.0$ mJ/mol K^2 and the Debye temperature $Θ_{\rm D}$ = 256 K are derived for the La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4}, while those for the LaPd_{2}Ge_{2} are $γ_{n} =8.26$ mJ/mol K^2 and $Θ_{\rm D}$ = 291 K. The La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4} has moderately high electronic density of state at the Fermi level. Electronic contribution on the specific heat, $C_{\rm el}$, in each compound is well described by the BCS behavior, suggesting that both of the La_{3}Pd_{4}Ge_{4} and the LaPd_{2}Ge_{2} have fully opened isotropic gap in the superconducting state.

Unconventional Superconductivity Induced by Quantum Critical Fluctuations in Hydrate Cobaltate Na$_{x}$(H$_3$O)$_{z}$CoO$_{x}\cdot$ $y$H$_{2}$O -- Relationship between Magnetic Fluctuations and the Superconductivity Revealed by a Co Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance --

Co nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements were performed on various bilayered hydrate cobaltate Na_x(H_3O)_zCoO_2\cdot yH_2O with different values of the superconducting and magnetic-ordering temperatures, T_c and T_M, respectively. From measurements of the temperature and sample dependence of the NQR frequency, it was revealed that the NQR frequency is changed by the change of the electric field gradient (EFG) along the c axis ν_{zz} rather than the asymmetry of EFG within the ab-plane. In addition, it is considered that the change of ν_{zz} is gaverned mainly by the trigonal distortion of the CoO_2 block layers along the c axis, from the relationships between ν_{zz} and the various physical parameters. We found the tendency that samples with ν_{zz} larger than 4.2 MHz show magnetic ordering, whereas samples with lower ν_{zz} show superconductivity. We measured the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 in these samples, and found that magnetic fluctuations depend on samples. The higher-ν_{zz} sample has stronger magnetic fluctuations at T_c. From the relationship between ν_{zz} and T_c or T_M, we suggest that the NQR frequency can be regarded as a tuning parameter to determine the ground state of the system, and develop the phase diagram using ν_{zz}. This phase diagram shows that the highest-T_c sample is located at the point where T_M is considered to be zero, which suggests that the superconductivity is induced by quantum critical fluctuations. We strongly advocate that the hydrate cobaltate superconductor presents an example of the magnetic-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity argued in the heavy-fermion compounds. The coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism observed in the sample with the highest ν_{zz} is also discussed on the basis of the results of our experiments.

Discovery of Li2(Pd,Pt)3B superconductors

Critical temperature Tc of the Li2(Pd1-xPtx)3B was reported to be 7-8K for x=0 and 2.2-2.8K for x=1. In this article we present our preliminary results on behavior of magnetization-temperature curves with starting composition of Pd-B precursor, y-Li concentration in LiyPd3B and post-annealing of the Pd-end compound. Results suggest that to maximize Tc ratio Pd:B should be close to 3:1, while y-Li has to be optimum. The lowest Tc for LiyPd3B was 4.4-4.6K, while post-annealings at 560 deg. C allowed enhancement of Tc up to 8.2-8.4K. Compositions Li2Z3B with Z=Ni, Ru, Rh, Re, Ag are not superconducting down to 1.8K. Exception is composition with Re showing superconductivity due to Re3B compound. All samples were prepared by arc melting.

Anisotropic Behavior of Knight Shift in Superconducting State of Na_xCoO_2yH_2O

The Co Knight shift was measured in an aligned powder sample of Na_xCoO_2yH_2O, which shows superconductivity at T_c \sim 4.6 K. The Knight-shift components parallel (K_c) and perpendicular to the c-axis (along the ab plane K_{ab}) were measured in both the normal and superconducting (SC) states. The temperature dependences of K_{ab} and K_c are scaled with the bulk susceptibility, which shows that the microscopic susceptibility deduced from the Knight shift is related to Co-3d spins. In the SC state, the Knight shift shows an anisotropic temperature dependence: K_{ab} decreases below 5 K, whereas K_c does not decrease within experimental accuracy. This result raises the possibility that spin-triplet superconductivity with the spin component of the pairs directed along the c-axis is realized in Na_xCoO_2yH_2O.

Evidence of gap anisotropy in superconducting YNi2B2C using directional point contact spectroscopy

We present a study of the anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap in a single crystal of YNi2B2C (Tc~14.6K) using directional point contact spectroscopy. The superconducting energy gap at 2.7K, when measured for I||c, is 4.5 times larger than that for I||a. The energy gaps in the two directions also have different temperature dependences. Our results support a scenario with s+g like symmetry.

Superconductivity in metal rich Li-Pd-B ternary Boride

8K superconductivity was observed in the metal rich Li-Pd-B ternary system. Structural, microstructural, electrical and magnetic investigations for various compositions proved that Li2Pd3B compound, which has a cubic structure composed of distorted Pd6B octahedrons, is responsible for the superconductivity. This is the first observation of superconductivity in metal rich ternary borides containing alkaline metal and Pd as a late transition metal. The compound prepared by arc melting has high density, is stable in the air and has an upper critical field, Hc2(0), of 6T.

Magnon Specific Heat of Single Crystal Borocarbides RNi2B2C (R=Tm, Er, Ho, Dy, Tb, Gd)

Zero-field specific heat of the single crystals RNi2B2C (R= Er, Ho, Dy, Tb, Gd) was measured within the temperature range 0.1 K<T<25 K. Linearized spin wave analysis was successfully applied to account for and to rationalize the thermal evolution of the low--temperature magnetic specific heats of all the studied compounds (as well as the one reported for TmNi2B2C) in terms of only two parameters, namely an energy gap, delta, and a characteristic temperature, theta. The evolution of the gap and theta across the studied compounds correlates very well with the known magnetic properties. Theta, as a measure of the effective RKKY exchange couplings, scales reasonably well with the de Gennes factor. The gap, on the other hand, reflects predominately the anisotropic properties: ~2 K for GdNi2B2C, ~6 K for ErNi2B2C, ~7 K for TbNi2B2C, and ~8 K for each of HoNi2B2C and DyNi2B2C. The equality in the gap of HoNi2B2C and DyNi2B2C, coupled with the similarity in their magnetic configurations, indicates that a variation of x in the solid solution HoxDy1-xNi2B2C (x<0.8 and Tc<Tn) would not lead to any softening of the gap. This supports the hypothesis of Cho et al (PRL 77,163(1996)) concerning the influence of the collective magnetic excitations on the superconducting state. This work underlines the importance of spin-wave excitations for a valid description of low-temperature thermodynamics of borocarbides.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of GdNi2B2C: Two-ion Magnetoelasticity and Anisotropic Exchange Couplings

Extensive magnetization and magnetostriction measurements were carried out on a single crystal of GdNi2B2C along the main tetragonal axes. Within the paramagnetic phase, the magnetic and strain susceptibilities revealed a weak anisotropy in the exchange couplings and two-ion tetragonal-preserving alpha-strain modes. Within the ordered phase, magnetization and magnetostriction revealed a relatively strong orthorhombic distortion mode and rich field-temperature phase diagrams. For H//(100) phase diagram, three field-induced transformations were observed, namely, at: Hd(T), related to the domain alignment; Hr(T), associated with reorientation of the moment towards the c-axis; and Hs(T), defining the saturation process wherein the exchange field is completely counterbalanced. On the other hand, For H//(001) phase diagram, only two field-induced transformations were observed, namely at: Hr(T) and Hs(T). For both phase diagrams, Hs(T) follows the relation Hs[1-(T/Tn)^2]^(1/2)kOe with Hs(T-->0)=128.5(5) kOe and Tn(H=0)=19.5 K. In contrast, the thermal evolution of Hr(T) along the c-axis (much simpler than along the a-axis) follows the relation Hr[1-T/Tr]^(1/3) kOe where Hr(T-->0)=33.5(5) kOe and Tr(H=0)=13.5 K. It is emphasized that the magnetoelastic interaction and the anisotropic exchange coupling are important perturbations and therefore should be explicitly considered if a complete analysis of the magnetic properties of the borocarbides is desired.

Spontaneous vortex phase in ErNi2B2C

Below T_{WFM} ~ 2.75K, a weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in ErNi2B2C. In the present paper, a possibility of a spontaneous vortex phase was examined directly by small angle neutron scattering technique. An external magnetic field was applied to align ferromagnetic domains so that the internal magnetic field induced by the weak ferromagnetism becomes uniform and uniaxial over the bulk sample. When the field is removed, the flux line lattice subsisted below T_{WFM} but disappeared above it. A pinning effect is also discussed. We conclude that the spontaneous vortex state is realized in ErNi2B2C.

Superconducting Properties of MgB2 Bulk Materials Prepared by High Pressure Sintering

High-density bulk materials of a newly discovered 40K intermetallic MgB2 superconductor were prepared by high pressure sintering. Superconducting transition with the onset temperature of 39K was confirmed by both magnetic and resistive measurements. Magnetization versus field (M-H) curve shows the behavior of a typical Type II superconductor and the lower critical field Hc1(0) estimated from M-H curve is 0.032T. The bulk sample shows good connection between grains and critical current density Jc estimated from the magnetization hysteresis using sample size was 2x104A/cm2 at 20K and 1T. Upper critical field Hc2(0) determined by extrapolating the onset of resistive transition and assuming a dirty limit is 18T.

Low Energy Quasiparticle Excitation in the Vortex State of Borocarbide Superconductor YNi_2B_2C

We have measured the low temperature heat capacity Cp and microwave surface impedance Zs in the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C. In contrast to conventional s-wave superconductors, Cp shows a nearly \sqrt H-dependence. This \sqrt H-dependence persists even after the introduction of the columnar defects which change the electronic structure of the vortex core regime dramatically and strongly disturb the regular vortex lattice. On the other hand, flux flow resistivity obtained from Zs is nearly proportional to H. Taken together, these results indicate that the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C is fundamentally different from the conventional s-wave counterparts, in that the delocalized quasiparticle states around the vortex core play a much more important role, similar to d-wave superconductors.
