Direct determination of strange and light quark condensates from full lattice QCD

We determine the strange and light quark condensates in full lattice QCD for the first time. This is done by direct calculation of the expectation value of the trace of the quark propagator followed by subtraction of the appropriate perturbative contribution to convert to a value for the condensate in the MS-bar scheme at 2 GeV. We use lattice QCD configurations including u, d, s and c quarks in the sea with u/d quark masses going down to the physical value. We find the ratio of the strange to the light quark condensate to be 1.08(16).

Precise charm to strange mass ratio and light quark masses from full lattice QCD

By using a single formalism to handle charm, strange and light valence quarks in full lattice QCD for the first time, we are able to determine ratios of quark masses to 1%. For $m_c/m_s$ we obtain 11.85(16), an order of magnitude more precise than the current PDG average. Combined with 1% determinations of the charm quark mass now possible this gives $\bar{m}_s(2{\rm GeV}) =$ 92.4(1.5) MeV. The MILC result for $m_s/m_l = 27.2(3) $ yields $\bar{m}_l(2{\rm GeV})$ = 3.40(7) MeV for the average of $u$ and $d$ quark masses.

Update: Accurate Determinations of alpha_s from Realistic Lattice QCD

We use lattice QCD simulations, with MILC configurations (including vacuum polarization from u, d, and s quarks), to update our previous determinations of the QCD coupling constant. Our new analysis uses results from 6 different lattice spacings and 12 different combinations of sea-quark masses to significantly reduce our previous errors. We also correct for finite-lattice-spacing errors in the scale setting, and for nonperturbative chiral corrections to the 22 short-distance quantities from which we extract the coupling. Our final result is alpha_V(7.5GeV,nf=3) = 0.2120(28), which is equivalent to alpha_msbar(M_Z,n_f=5)= 0.1183(8). We compare this with our previous result, which differs by one standard deviation.

Precision charm physics, m_c and alpha_s from lattice QCD

We present an update of results from the HPQCD collaboration on charm physics using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action. This includes a precise determination of m_c using moments of current-current correlators combined with high-order continuum QCD perturbation theory. We also include an update on the determination of alpha_s from lattice QCD, preliminary results on the determination of m_b and a summary plot of the status of the gold-plated meson spectrum. There is an appendix on tackling systematic errors in fitting using the Bayesian approach.

High-Precision Charm-Quark Mass and QCD Coupling from Current-Current Correlators in Lattice and Continuum QCD

We use lattice QCD simulations, with MILC gluon configurations and HISQ c-quark propagators, to make very precise determinations of moments of charm-quark pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector correlators. These moments are combined with new four-loop results from continuum perturbation theory to obtain several new determinations of the MSbar mass of the charm quark and of the MSbar coupling. We find m_c(3GeV)=0.986(10)GeV, or, equivalently, m_c(m_c)=1.268(9)GeV, both for n_f=4 flavors; and alpha_msb(3GeV,n_f=4)=0.251(6), or, equivalently, alpha_\msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1174(12). The new mass agrees well with results from continuum analyses of the vector correlator using experimental data for e+e- annihilation (instead of using lattice QCD simulations). These lattice and continuum results are the most accurate determinations to date of this mass. Ours is also one of the most accurate determinations of the QCD coupling by any method.

Charm physics with highly improved staggered quarks

We use a relativistic highly improved staggered quark action to discretize charm quarks on the lattice. We calculate the masses and the dispersion relation for heavy-heavy and heavy-light meson states, and show that for lattice spacings below .1 fm, the discretization errors are at the few percent level. We also discuss the prospects for accurate calculations at the few percent level of f_D_s, f_D, and the leptonic width of the psi and phi.

Highly Improved Staggered Quarks on the Lattice, with Applications to Charm Physics

We use perturbative Symanzik improvement to create a new staggered-quark action (HISQ) that has greatly reduced one-loop taste-exchange errors, no tree-level order a^2 errors, and no tree-level order (am)^4 errors to leading order in the quark's velocity v/c. We demonstrate with simulations that the resulting action has taste-exchange interactions that are at least 3--4 times smaller than the widely used ASQTAD action. We show how to estimate errors due to taste exchange by comparing ASQTAD and HISQ simulations, and demonstrate with simulations that such errors are no more than 1% when HISQ is used for light quarks at lattice spacings of 1/10 fm or less. The suppression of (am)^4 errors also makes HISQ the most accurate discretization currently available for simulating c quarks. We demonstrate this in a new analysis of the psi-eta_c mass splitting using the HISQ action on lattices where a m_c=0.43 and 0.66, with full-QCD gluon configurations (from MILC). We obtain a result of~111(5) MeV which compares well with experiment. We discuss applications of this formalism to D physics and present our first high-precision results for D_s mesons.

First determination of the strange and light quark masses from full lattice QCD

We compute the strange quark mass $m_s$ and the average of the $u$ and $d$ quark masses $\hat m$ using full lattice QCD with three dynamical quarks combined with experimental values for the pion and kaon masses. The simulations have degenerate $u$ and $d$ quarks with masses $m_u=m_d\equiv \hat m$ as low as $m_s/8$, and two different values of the lattice spacing. The bare lattice quark masses obtained are converted to the $\msbar$ scheme using perturbation theory at $O(alpha_s)$. Our results are: $m_s^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 76(0)(3)(7)(0) MeV, $\hat m^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 2.8(0)(1)(3)(0) MeV and $m_s/\hat m$ = 27.4(1)(4)(0)(1), where the errors are from statistics, simulation, perturbation theory, and electromagnetic effects, respectively.

Improvement and Taste Symmetry Breaking for Staggered Quarks

We compare several improved actions for staggered quarks. We study the effect of improvement on the taste changing interactions by calculating the splitting in the pion spectrum. We investigate the effect of the improvement on some topological properties.

The determination of alpha_s from lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks

We describe the first lattice determination of the strong coupling constant with 3 flavors of dynamical quarks. The method follows previous analyses in using a perturbative expansion for the plaquette and Upsilon spectroscopy to set the scale. Using dynamical configurations from the MILC collaboration with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks we are able to avoid previous problems of having to extrapolate to 3 light flavors from 0 and 2. Our results agree with our previous work: alpha_s_MSbar(M_Z) = 0.121(3).

The Upsilon Spectrum from Lattice QCD with 2+1 Flavors of Dynamical Quarks

We describe the bottomonium spectrum obtained on the MILC configurations which incorporate 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks. We compare to quenched and 2 flavor results also on MILC configurations. We show that the lattice spacing determination using different quantities shows clear signs of convergence with 2+1 flavors and give results for the leptonic width and hyperfine splitting, in the form of the ratio of the 1st excited state of the Upsilon to that of the ground state.

Mass renormalisation for improved staggered quarks

Improved staggered quark actions are designed to suppress flavour changing strong interactions. We discuss the perturbation theory for this type of actions and show the improvements to reduce the quark mass renormalisation compared to naive staggered quarks. The renormalisations are of similar size as for Wilson quarks.
