Experimental characterisation of a combined LVDT position sensor and voice-coil actuator for gravitational wave detectors

A detailed characterisation of a combined Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) position sensor and voice-coil (VC) actuator designed for seismic isolation systems in gravitational wave detectors is presented. A dedicated experimental setup and a finite-element simulation framework were developed to measure and model a representative Einstein Telescope pathfinder Type-A LVDT+VC assembly. The setup employs a precision translation stage and balance to quantify LVDT displacement response and VC force output under controlled conditions. We found a good agreement between experiment and simulation: the measured LVDT response was determined with an uncertainty of 0.5% and differed by only 1.3% from the model prediction, demonstrating high linearity over a $\pm$5~mm range. In addition, the VC force measurements agreed within the total uncertainty: the maximum normalised force was determined with a precision of 2.3% and matched the simulated value with only 0.6% discrepancy. These results validate the combined sensor-actuator design and our measurement methodology. The demonstrated linear response and stable actuation confirm that this LVDT+VC device can be used for low-frequency suspension control. Our framework therefore provides a validated tool to optimise existing sensor and actuator designs, and to study novel prototypes for next-generation gravitational wave detectors.

ETpathfinder: a cryogenic testbed for interferometric gravitational-wave detectors

The third-generation of gravitational wave observatories, such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE), aim for an improvement in sensitivity of at least a factor of ten over a wide frequency range compared to the current advanced detectors. In order to inform the design of the third-generation detectors and to develop and qualify their subsystems, dedicated test facilities are required. ETpathfinder prototype uses full interferometer configurations and aims to provide a high sensitivity facility in a similar environment as ET. Along with the interferometry at 1550 nm and silicon test masses, ETpathfinder will focus on cryogenic technologies, lasers and optics at 2090 nm and advanced quantum-noise reduction schemes. This paper analyses the underpinning noise contributions and combines them into full noise budgets of the two initially targeted configurations: 1) operating with 1550 nm laser light and at a temperature of 18 K and 2) operating at 2090 nm wavelength and a temperature of 123 K.

Trijets in kt-factorisation: matrix elements vs parton shower

We study 3-jet event topologies in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13 {\rm\ TeV}$ in a configuration, where one jet is present in the central pseudorapidity region ($|η| < 2.0$) while two other jets are in a more forward (same hemisphere) area ($|η| > 2.0$). We compare various parton level predictions using: collinear factorisation, $\KT{}$-factorisation with fully off-shell matrix elements and the hybrid framework. We study the influence of different parton distribution functions, initial state radiation, final state radiation, and hadronisation. We focus on differential cross sections as a function of azimuthal angle difference between the leading dijet system and the third jet, which is found to have excellent sensitivity to the physical effects under study.

LHC Forward Physics

The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

Measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The analysis is performed using the CMS detector, in particular with information from forward calorimetry at pseudorapidities of 3.0 < η < 5.2 and -6.6 < η < -3.0. A visible cross section is measured in two different detector acceptances and finally extrapolated to the full inelastic phase space domain. The results are compared with those of other experiments, and with models used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions.

Treating jet correlations in high pile-up at hadron colliders

Experiments in the high-luminosity runs at the Large Hadron Collider face the challenges of very large pile-up. Primary techniques to deal with this are based on precise vertex and track reconstruction. Outside tracker acceptances, however, lie regions of interest for many aspects of the LHC physics program. We explore complementary approaches to pile-up treatment and propose a data-driven jet-mixing method which can be used outside tracker acceptances without depending on Monte Carlo generators. The method can be applied to treat correlation observables and take into account, besides the jet transverse momentum pedestal, effects of hard jets from pile-up.

Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Higgs boson as a gluon trigger: the study of QCD in high pile-up environments

In the forthcoming high-luminosity phase of the LHC many of the most interesting measurements for precision QCD studies are hampered by large pile-up conditions, especially at not very high transverse momenta. However, with the recently discovered Higgs boson, which couples in the heavy top limit directly to gluons, we have access to a novel production process to probe QCD by a colour-singlet current. In this study we compare observables in Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production and investigate whether measuring ratios or subtractions can yield results that are stable in high pile-up environments, and yet sensitive to (small-$p_{\text{T}}$) QCD physics in gluon fusion processes. We present results of Monte Carlo event generator calculations for a few specific examples.

Measurements of the forward energy flow and forward jet production with CMS

We present measurements of the forward (3 < |eta| < 5) energy flow in minimum bias events and in events with either hard jets or W and Z bosons produced at central rapidities together with first measurements of the inclusive forward jet cross section and central forward jet correlations. Results are compared to MC models with different parameter tunes for the description of the underlying event.
