Dihedrally Symmetric Monopoles and Affine Toda Equations

We show that any $SU(2)$ BPS monopole of charge $k$ with rotational spatial dihedral symmetry is gauge equivalent to the Nahm data obtained from affine Toda equations of $C_l^{(1)}$ type when $k=2l$ or $A_{2(l-1)}^{(2)}$ type when $k=2l-1$.

Orbits of Theta Characteristics

The theta characteristics on a Riemann surface are permuted by the induced action of the automorphism group, with the orbit structure being important for the geometry of the curve and associated manifolds. We describe two new methods for advancing the understanding of these orbits, generalising existing results of Kallel & Sjerve, allowing us to establish the existence of infinitely many curves possessing a unique invariant characteristic as well as determine the number of invariant characteristics for all Hurwitz curves with simple automorphism group. In addition, we compute orbit decompositions for a substantial number of curves with genus $\leq 9$, allowing the identification of where current theoretical understanding falls short and the potential applications of machine learning techniques.

Towards a Classification of Charge-3 Monopoles with Symmetry

We classify all possible charge-3 monopole spectral curves with non-trivial automorphism group and within these identify those with elliptic quotients. By focussing on elliptic quotients the transcendental constraints for a monopole spectral curve become ones regarding periods of elliptic functions. We construct the Nahm data and new monopole spectral curves with $D_6$ and $V_4$ symmetry, the latter based on an integrable complexification of Euler's equations, and for which energy density isosurfaces are plotted. Extensions of our approach to higher charge and hyperbolic monopoles are discussed.

Bring's curve: Old and New

Bring's curve, the unique Riemann surface of genus-4 with automorphism group $S_5$, has many exceptional properties. We review, give new proofs of, and extend a number of these including giving the complete realisation of the automorphism group for a plane curve model, identifying a new elliptic quotient of the curve and the modular curve $X_0(50)$, providing a complete description of the orbit decomposition of the theta characteristics, and identifying the unique invariant characteristic with the divisor of the Szëgo kernel. In achieving this we have used modern computational tools in Sagemath, Macaulay2, and Maple, for which notebooks demonstrating calculations are provided.

Construction of Exact Solutions to Nahm's Equations for the Multimonopole

We construct high rank solutions to Nahm's equations for boundary conditions that correspond to the Dirac multimonopole. Here, the spectral curve is explicitly known and we achieve the integration by constructing a basis of polynomial tuples that forms a frame for the flow of the eigenline bundle over the curve.

The Charge 2 Monopole via the ADHMN construction

Recently we have shown how one may use use integrable systems techniques to implement the ADHMN construction and obtain general analytic formulae for the charge n su(2) Euclidean monopole. Here we do this for the case of charge 2: so answering an open problem of some 30 years standing. A comparison with known results and other approaches is made and new results presented.

Spectral Curves are Transcendental

Some arithmetic properties of spectral curves are discussed: the spectral curve, for example, of a charge $n\ge2$ Euclidean BPS monopole is not defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ if smooth.

A Canonical Form for a Symplectic Involution

We present a canonical form for a symplectic involution $S\in Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$, $S^2=1$; the construction is algorithmic. Application is made in the Riemann surface setting.

The Construction of Monopoles

We show that the Higgs and gauge fields for a BPS monopole may be constructed directly from the spectral curve without having to solve the gauge constraint needed to obtain the Nahm data. The result is the analogue of the instanton result: given ADHM data one can reconstruct the gauge fields algebraically together with differentiation. Here, given the spectral curve, one can similarly reconstruct the Higgs and gauge fields. This answers a problem that has remained open since the discovery of monopoles.

Seiberg-Witten curves and double-elliptic integrable systems

An old conjecture claims that commuting Hamiltonians of the double-elliptic integrable system are constructed from the theta-functions associated with Riemann surfaces from the Seiberg-Witten family, with moduli treated as dynamical variables and the Seiberg-Witten differential providing the pre-symplectic structure. We describe a number of theta-constant equations needed to prove this conjecture for the $N$-particle system. These equations provide an alternative method to derive the Seiberg-Witten prepotential and we illustrate this by calculating the perturbative contribution. We provide evidence that the solutions to the commutativity equations are exhausted by the double-elliptic system and its degenerations (Calogero and Ruijsenaars systems). Further, the theta-function identities that lie behind the Poisson commutativity of the three-particle Hamiltonians are proven.

Dynamics on strata of trigonal Jacobians and some integrable problems of rigid body motion

We present an algebraic geometrical and analytical description of the Goryachev case of rigid body motion. It belongs to a family of systems sharing the same properties: although completely integrable, they are not algebraically integrable, their solution is not meromorphic in the complex time and involves dynamics on the strata of the Jacobian varieties of trigonal curves. Although the strata of hyperelliptic Jacobians have already appeared in the literature in the context of some dynamical systems, the Goryachev case is the first example of an integrable system whose solution involves a more general curve. Several new features (and formulae) are encountered in the solution given in terms of sigma-functions of such a curve.

Klein's Curve

By giving an homology basis well adapted to the symmetries of Klein's curve, presented as a plane curve, we derive a new expression for its period matrix. This is explicitly related to the hyperbolic model and results of Rauch and Lewittes.

On the existence of non-abelian monopoles: the algebro-geometric approach

We develop the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Manin-Hitchin-Nahm construction to study SU(2) non-abelian charge 3 monopoles within the algebro-geometric method. The method starts with finding an algebraic curve, the monopole spectral curve, subject to Hitchin's constraints. We take as the monopole curve the genus four curve that admits a $C_3$ symmetry, $η^3+αηζ^2+βζ^6+γζ^3-β=0$, with real parameters $α$, $β$ and $γ$. In the case $α=0$ we prove that the only suitable values of $γ/β$ are $\pm 5\sqrt{2}$ ($β$ is given below) which corresponds to the tetrahedrally symmetric solution. We then extend this result by continuity to non-zero values of the parameter $α$ and find finally a {\em new} one-parameter family of monopole curves with $C_3$ symmetry.

On Charge-3 Cyclic Monopoles

We determine the spectral curve of charge 3 BPS su(2) monopoles with C_3 cyclic symmetry. The symmetry means that the genus 4 spectral curve covers a (Toda) spectral curve of genus 2. A well adapted homology basis is presented enabling the theta functions and monopole data of the genus 4 curve to be given in terms of genus 2 data. The Richelot correspondence, a generalization of the arithmetic mean, is used to solve for this genus 2 curve. Results of other approaches are compared.

Cyclic Monopoles, Affine Toda and Spectral Curves

We show that any cyclically symmetric monopole is gauge equivalent to Nahm data given by Sutcliffe's ansatz, and so obtained from the affine Toda equations. Further the direction (the Ercolani-Sinha vector) and base point of the linearising flow in the Jacobian of the spectral curve associated to the Nahm equations arise as pull-backs of Toda data. A theorem of Accola and Fay then means that the theta-functions arising in the solution of the monopole problem reduce to the theta-functions of Toda.

On the tetrahedrally symmetric monopole

We study SU(2) BPS monopoles with spectral curves of the form $η^3+χ(ζ^6+b ζ^3-1)=0$. Previous work has has established a countable family of solutions to Hitchin's constraint that $L^2$ was trivial on such a curve. Here we establish that the only curves of this family that yield BPS monopoles correspond to tetrahedrally symmetric monopoles. We introduce several new techniques making use of a factorization theorem of Fay and Accola for theta functions, together with properties of the Humbert variety. The geometry leads us to a formulation purely in terms of elliptic functions. A more general conjecture than needed for the stated result is given.

Finite-gap integration of the SU(2) Bogomolny equations

The ADHMN construction of magnetic monopoles is given in terms of the (normalizable) solutions of an associated Weyl equation. We focus here on solving this equation directly by algebro-geometric means. The (adjoint) Weyl equation is solved using an ansätz of Nahm in terms of Baker-Akhiezer functions. The solution of Nahm's equation is not directly used in our development.

WDVV equations for 6d Seiberg-Witten theory and bi-elliptic curves

We present a generic derivation of the WDVV equations for 6d Seiberg-Witten theory, and extend it to the families of bi-elliptic spectral curves. We find that the elliptization of the naive perturbative and nonperturbative 6d systems roughly "doubles" the number of moduli describing the system.
