Longitudinal and transverse mobilities of $n$-type monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides in the presence of proximity-induced interactions at low temperature

We present a detailed theoretical investigation on the electronic transport properties of $n$-type monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) at low temperature in the presence of proximity-induced interactions such as Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) and the exchange interaction. The electronic band structure is calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation with a $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ Hamiltonian, and the electric screening induced by electron-electron interaction is evaluated under a standard random phase approximation approach. In particular, the longitudinal and transverse or Hall mobilities are calculated by using a momentum-balance equation derived from a semi-classical Boltzmann equation, where the electron-impurity interaction is considered as the principal scattering center at low temperature. The obtained results show that the RSOC can induce the in-plane spin components for spin-split subbands in different valleys, while the exchange interaction can lift the energy degeneracy for electrons in different valleys. The opposite signs of Berry curvatures in the two valleys would introduce opposite directions of Lorentz force on valley electrons. As a result, the transverse currents from nondegenerate valleys can no longer be canceled out so that the transverse current or Hall mobility can be observed. Interestingly, we find that at a fixed effective Zeeman field, the lowest spin-split conduction subband in ML-TMDs can be tuned from one in the $K'$-valley to one in the $K$-valley by varying the Rashba parameter. The occupation of electrons in different valleys also varies with changing carrier density. Therefore, we can change the magnitude and direction of the Hall current by varying the Rashba parameter, effective Zeeman field, and carrier density by, e.g., the presence of a ferromagnetic substrate and/or applying a gate voltage.

Optical spectrum of $n$-type and $p$-type monolayer MoS$_2$ in the presence of proximity-induced interactions

In this paper, we examined the effects of proximity-induced interactions such as Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and effective Zeeman fields (EZFs) on the optical spectrum of $n$-type and $p$-type monolayer (ML)-MoS$_2$. The optical conductivity is evaluated using the standard Kubo formula under Random phase approximation (RPA) with including the effective electron-electron interaction. It has been found that there exists two absorption peaks in $n$-type ML-MoS$_{2}$ and two knife shaped absorptions in $p$-type ML-MoS$_{2}$ which are contributed by the inter-subband spin flip electronic transitions within conduction and valence bands at valleys $K$ and $K'$ with a lifted valley degeneracy. The optical absorptions in $n$-type and $p$-type ML-MoS$_{2}$ occur in THz and infrared radiation regimes and the position, height, and shape of them can be effectively tuned by Rashba parameter, EZFs parameters, and carrier density. The interesting theoretical predictions in this study would be helpful for the experimental observation of the optical absorption in infrared to THz bandwidths contributed by inter-subband spin flip electronic transitions in a lifted valley degeneracy monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs) system. The obtained results indicate that ML-MoS$_{2}$ with the platform of proximity interactions make it a promising infrared and THz material for optics and optoelectronics.

Construction and commissioning of the collinear laser spectroscopy system at BRIF

We have constructed a collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) system installed at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility (BRIF), aiming to investigate the nuclear properties of unstable nuclei. The first on-line commissioning experiment of this system was performed using the continuous stable ($^{39}$K) and unstable ($^{38}$K) ion beams produced by impinging a 100-MeV proton beam on a CaO target. Hyperfine structure spectra of these two isotopes are reasonably reproduced, and the extracted magnetic dipole hyperfine parameters and isotope shift agree with the literature values. The on-line experiment demonstrates the overall functioning of this CLS system, opening new opportunities for laser spectroscopy measurement of unstable isotopes at BRIF and other radioactive ion beam facilities in China.

New $α$-Emitting Isotope $^{214}$U and Abnormal Enhancement of $α$-Particle Clustering in Lightest Uranium Isotopes

A new $α$-emitting isotope $^{214}$U, produced by fusion-evaporation reaction $^{182}$W($^{36}$Ar, 4n)$^{214}$U, was identified by employing the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and recoil-$α$ correlation technique. More precise $α$-decay properties of even-even nuclei $^{216,218}$U were also measured in reactions of $^{40}$Ar, $^{40}$Ca with $^{180, 182, 184}$W targets. By combining the experimental data, improved $α$-decay reduced widths $δ^2$ for the even-even Po--Pu nuclei in the vicinity of magic neutron number $N=126$ were deduced. Their systematic trends are discussed in terms of $N_{p}N_{n}$ scheme in order to study the influence of proton-neutron interaction on $α$ decay in this region of nuclei. It is strikingly found that the reduced widths of $^{214,216}$U are significantly enhanced by a factor of two as compared with the $N_{p}N_{n}$ systematics for the $84 \leq Z \leq 90$ and $N<126$ even-even nuclei. The abnormal enhancement is interpreted by the strong monopole interaction between the valence protons and neutrons occupying the $π1f_{7/2}$ and $ν1f_{5/2}$ spin-orbit partner orbits, which is supported by a large-scale shell model calculation.

New high-spin structure and possible chirality in $^{109}$In

High-spin structure of $^{109}$In has been investigated with the $^{100}$Mo($^{14}$N, 5$n$)$^{109}$In reaction at a beam energy of 78 MeV using the in-beam $γ$ spectroscopic method. The level scheme of $^{109}$In has been modified considerably and extended by 46 new $γ$-rays to the highest excited state at 8.979 MeV and $J^π$=(45/2$^{+}$). The new level scheme consists of eight bands, six of which are identified as dipole bands. The configurations have been tentatively assigned with the help of the systematics of neighboring odd-$A$ indium isotopes and the experimental aligned angular momenta. The dipole bands are then compared with the titled axis cranking calculation in the framework of covariant density function theory (TAC-CDFT). The results of theoretical calculation based on the configurations, which involve one proton hole at the $g_{9/2}$ orbital and two or four unpaired neutrons at $g_{7/2}$, $d_{5/2}$ and $h_{11/2}$ orbitals, show that the shape of $^{109}$In undergoes an evolution on both $β$ and $γ$ deformations and possible chirality is suggested in $^{109}$In.

Reference frame independent quantum key distribution server with telecom tether for on-chip client

We demonstrate a client-server quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme, with large resources such as laser and detectors situated at the server-side, which is accessible via telecom-fibre, to a client requiring only an on-chip polarisation rotator, that may be integrated into a handheld device. The detrimental effects of unstable fibre birefringence are overcome by employing the reference frame independent QKD protocol for polarisation qubits in polarisation maintaining fibre, where standard QKD protocols fail, as we show for comparison. This opens the way for quantum enhanced secure communications between companies and members of the general public equipped with handheld mobile devices, via telecom-fibre tethering.

Calibration and High Fidelity Measurement of a Quantum Photonic Chip

Integrated quantum photonic circuits are becoming increasingly complex. Accurate calibration of device parameters and detailed characterization of the prepared quantum states are critically important for future progress. Here we report on an effective experimental calibration method based on Bayesian updating and Markov chain Monte Carlo integration. We use this calibration technique to characterize a two qubit chip and extract the reflectivities of its directional couplers. An average quantum state tomography fidelity of 93.79+/-1.05% against the four Bell states is achieved. Furthermore, comparing the measured density matrices against a model using the non-ideal device parameters derived from the calibration we achieve an average fidelity of 97.57+/-0.96%. This pinpoints non-ideality of chip parameters as a major factor in the decrease of Bell state fidelity. We also perform quantum state tomography for Bell states while continuously varying photon distinguishability and find excellent agreement with theory.

Demonstration of Free-space Reference Frame Independent Quantum Key Distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is moving from research laboratories towards applications. As computing becomes more mobile, cashless as well as cardless payment solutions are introduced, and a need arises for incorporating QKD in a mobile device. Handheld devices present a particular challenge as the orientation and the phase of a qubit will depend on device motion. This problem is addressed by the reference frame independent (RFI) QKD scheme. The scheme tolerates an unknown phase between logical states that varies slowly compared to the rate of particle repetition. Here we experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of RFI QKD over a free-space link in a prepare and measure scheme using polarisation encoding. We extend the security analysis of the RFI QKD scheme to be able to deal with uncalibrated devices and a finite number of measurements. Together these advances are an important step towards mass production of handheld QKD devices.

Bell violation versus geometric measure of quantum discord and their dynamical behavior

Motivated by recent numerous works on the interplay among various measures of quantum correlations, we aim to investigate the relationship between the violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality and geometric measure of quantum discord for two-qubit systems. Exact lower and upper bounds of Bell violation versus geometric discord are obtained for a specific and significant class of states, Bell diagonal states, and the respective states which suffice those bounds are also characterized. The dynamical behavior of these two quantifiers is carefully analyzed in the presence of decoherence, including Markovian, non-Markovian, and non-back-action quantum environments. The results suggest that Bell violation is closely related to geometric discord, like its relationship with other entanglement monotones.

Reconfigurable controlled two-qubit operation on a quantum photonic chip

Integrated quantum photonics is an appealing platform for quantum information processing, quantum communication and quantum metrology. In all these applications it is necessary not only to be able to create and detect Fock states of light but also to program the photonic circuits that implements some desired logical operation. Here we demonstrate a reconfigurable controlled two-qubit operation on a chip using a multiwaveguide interferometer with a tunable phase shifter. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment, with a 0.98 \pm 0.02 average similarity between measured and ideal operations.
