Perfect quantum state transfer in a superconducting qubit chain with parametrically tunable couplings

Faithfully transferring the quantum state is essential for quantum information processing. Here we demonstrate a fast (in 84 ns) and high-fidelity (99.2%) transfer of arbitrary quantum states in a chain of four superconducting qubits with nearest-neighbor coupling. This transfer relies on full control of the effective couplings between neighboring qubits, which is realized only by our parametrically modulating the qubits without increasing circuit complexity. Once the couplings between qubits fulfill a specific ratio, perfect quantum state transfer can be achieved in a single step, and is therefore robust to noise and accumulation of experimental errors. This quantum state transfer can be extended to a larger qubit chain and thus adds a desirable tool for future quantum information processing. The demonstrated flexibility of the coupling tunability is suitable for quantum simulation of many-body physics, which requires different configurations of qubit couplings.

Single-loop realization of arbitrary non-adiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates in a superconducting circuit

Geometric phases are noise-resilient, and thus provide a robust way towards high fidelity quantum manipulation. Here we experimentally demonstrate arbitrary non-adiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates for both a superconducting transmon qubit and a microwave cavity in a single-loop way. In both cases, an auxiliary state is utilized, and two resonant microwave drives are simultaneously applied with well-controlled but varying amplitudes and phases for the arbitrariness of the gate. The resulting gates on the transmon qubit achieve a fidelity of 0.996 characterized by randomized benchmarking and the ones on the cavity show an averaged fidelity of 0.978 based on a full quantum process tomography. In principle, a nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gate between the qubit and the cavity can also be realized based on our presented experimental scheme. Our experiment thus paves the way towards practical non-adiabatic holonomic quantum manipulation with both qubits and cavities in a superconducting circuit.

Metallic glasses for spintronics: anomalous temperature dependence and giant enhancement of inverse spin Hall effect

Spin-charge conversion via inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is essential for enabling various applications of spintronics. The spin Hall response usually follows a universal scaling relation with longitudinal electric resistivity and has mild temperature dependence because elementary excitations play only a minor role in resistivity and hence ISHE. Here we report that the ISHE of metallic glasses shows nearly two orders of magnitude enhancements with temperature increase from a threshold of 80-100 K to glass transition points. As electric resistivity changes only marginally in the temperature range, the anomalous temperature dependence is in defiance of the prevailing scaling law. Such a giant temperature enhancement can be well described by a two-level thermal excitation model of glasses and disappears after crystallization, suggesting a new mechanism which involves unique thermal excitations of glasses. This finding may pave new ways to achieve high spin-charge conversion efficiency at room and higher temperatures for spintronic devices and to detect structure and dynamics of glasses using spin currents.

Dephasing-insensitive quantum information storage and processing with superconducting qubits

A central task towards building a practical quantum computer is to protect individual qubits from decoherence while retaining the ability to perform high-fidelity entangling gates involving arbitrary two qubits. Here we propose and demonstrate a dephasing-insensitive procedure for storing and processing quantum information in an all-to-all connected superconducting circuit involving multiple frequency-tunable qubits, each of which can be controllably coupled to any other through a central bus resonator. Although it is generally believed that the extra frequency tunability enhances the control freedom but induces more dephasing impact for superconducting qubits, our results show that any individual qubit can be dynamically decoupled from dephasing noise by applying a weak continuous and resonant driving field whose phase is reversed in the middle of the pulse. More importantly, we demonstrate a new method for realizing two-qubit phase gate with inherent dynamical decoupling via the combination of continuous driving and qubit-qubit swapping coupling. We find that the weak continuous driving fields not only enable the conditional dynamics essential for quantum information processing, but also protect both qubits from dephasing during the gate operation.

Influence of Earth-Directed Coronal Mass Ejections on the Sun's Shadow Observed by the Tibet-III Air Shower Array

We examine the possible influence of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (ECMEs) on the Sun's shadow in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet-III air shower (AS) array. We confirm a clear solar-cycle variation of the intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow during ten years between 2000 and 2009. This solar-cycle variation is overall reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sun's shadow based on the potential field model of the solar magnetic field averaged over each solar rotation period. We find, however, that the magnitude of the observed intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow is significantly less than that predicted by MC simulations, particularly during the period around solar maximum when a significant number of ECMEs is recorded. The $χ^2$ tests of the agreement between the observations and the MC simulations show that the difference is larger during the periods when the ECMEs occur, and the difference is reduced if the periods of ECMEs are excluded from the analysis. This suggests the first experimental evidence of the ECMEs affecting the Sun's shadow observed in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity.

A loophole-free Wheeler-delayed-choice experiment

Wheeler's delayed-choice experiment investigates the indeterminacy of wave-particle duality and the role played by the measurement apparatus in quantum theory. Due to the inconsistency with classical physics, it has been generally believed that it is not possible to reproduce the delayed-choice experiment using a hidden variable theory. Recently, it was shown that this assumption was incorrect, and in fact Wheeler's delayed-choice experiment can be explained by a causal two dimensional hidden-variable theory [R. Chaves, G. B. Lemos, and J. Pienaar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 190401 (2018)]. Here, we carry out an experiment of a device-independent delayed-choice experiment using photon states that are space-like separated, and demonstrate a loophole-free version of the delayed-choice protocol that is consistent with quantum theory but inconsistent with any causal two-dimensional hidden variable theory. This salvages Wheeler's thought experiment and shows that causality can be used to test quantum theory in a complementary way to the Bell and Leggett-Garg tests.

Speeding up complex multivariate data analysis in Borexino with parallel computing based on Graphics Processing Unit

A spectral fitter based on the graphics processor unit (GPU) has been developed for Borexino solar neutrino analysis. It is able to shorten the fitting time to a superior level compared to the CPU fitting procedure. In Borexino solar neutrino spectral analysis, fitting usually requires around one hour to converge since it includes time-consuming convolutions in order to account for the detector response and pile-up effects. Moreover, the convergence time increases to more than two days when including extra computations for the discrimination of $^{11}$C and external $γ$s. In sharp contrast, with the GPU-based fitter it takes less than 10 seconds and less than four minutes, respectively. This fitter is developed utilizing the GooFit project with customized likelihoods, pdfs and infrastructures supporting certain analysis methods. In this proceeding the design of the package, developed features and the comparison with the original CPU fitter are presented.

Galactic Cosmic-Ray Anisotropy in the Northern hemisphere from the ARGO-YBJ Experiment during 2008-2012

This paper reports on the observation of the sidereal large-scale anisotropy of cosmic rays using data collected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment over 5 years (2008$-$2012). This analysis extends previous work limited to the period from 2008 January to 2009 December, near the minimum of solar activity between cycles 23 and 24.With the new data sample the period of solar cycle 24 from near minimum to maximum is investigated. A new method is used to improve the energy reconstruction, allowing us to cover a much wider energy range, from 4 to 520 TeV. Below 100 TeV, the anisotropy is dominated by two wide regions, the so-called "tail-in" and "loss-cone" features. At higher energies, a dramatic change of the morphology is confirmed. The yearly time dependence of the anisotropy is investigated. Finally, no noticeable variation of cosmic-ray anisotropy with solar activity is observed for a median energy of 7 TeV.

Measurement of the liquid argon energy response to nuclear and electronic recoils

A liquid argon time projection chamber, constructed for the Argon Response to Ionization and Scintillation (ARIS) experiment, has been exposed to the highly collimated and quasi-monoenergetic LICORNE neutron beam at the Institute de Physique Nuclaire Orsay in order to study the scintillation response to nuclear and electronic recoils. An array of liquid scintillator detectors, arranged around the apparatus, tag scattered neutrons and select nuclear recoil energies in the [7, 120] keV energy range. The relative scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils was measured to high precision at null field, and the ion-electron recombination probability was extracted for a range of applied electric fields. Single Compton scattered electrons, produced by gammas emitted from the de-excitation of $^7$Li* in coincidence with the beam pulse, along with calibration gamma sources, are used to extract the recombination probability as a function of energy and electron drift field. The ARIS results have been compared with three recombination probability parameterizations (Thomas-Imel, Doke-Birks, and PARIS), allowing for the definition of a fully comprehensive model of the liquid argon response to nuclear and electronic recoils down to a few keV range. The constraints provided by ARIS to the liquid argon response at low energy allow the reduction of systematics affecting the sensitivity of dark matter search experiments based on liquid argon

Spectroscopy of nuclei around $^{100}$Sn populated via two-neutron knockout reactions

We report on the in-beam gamma spectroscopy of $^{102}$Sn and $^{100}$Cd produced via two-neutron removal from carbon and CH$_2$ targets at about 150 MeV/nucleon beam energy. New transitions assigned to the decay of a second 2$^+$ excited state at 2470(60) keV in $^{102}$Sn were observed. Two-neutron removal cross sections from $^{104}$Sn and $^{102}$Cd have been extracted. The enhanced cross section to the 2$^+_2$ in $^{102}$Sn populated via the $(p,p2n)$ reaction is traced back to an increase of shell-model structure overlaps, consistent with the hypothesis that the proton-induced two-deeply-bound-nucleon removal mechanism is of direct nature.

Disk stars in the Milky Way detected beyond 25 kpc from its center

CONTEXT. The maximum size of the Galactic stellar disk is not yet known. Some studies have suggested an abrupt drop-off of the stellar density of the disk at Galactocentric distances $R\gtrsim 15$ kpc, which means that in practice no disk stars or only very few of them should be found beyond this limit. However, stars in the Milky Way plane are detected at larger distances. In addition to the halo component, star counts have placed the end of the disk beyond 20 kpc, although this has not been spectroscopically confirmed so far. AIMS. Here, we aim to spectroscopically confirm the presence of the disk stars up to much larger distances. METHODS. With data from the LAMOST and SDSS-APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, we statistically derived the maximum distance at which the metallicity distribution of stars in the Galactic plane is distinct from that of the halo populations. RESULTS. Our analysis reveals the presence of disk stars at R>26 kpc (99.7% C.L.) and even at R>31 kpc (95.4% C.L.).

Observation of the thunderstorm-related ground cosmic ray flux variations by ARGO-YBJ

A correlation between the secondary cosmic ray flux and the near-earth electric field intensity, measured during thunderstorms, has been found by analyzing the data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage air shower array located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China). The counting rates of showers with different particle multiplicities, have been found to be strongly dependent upon the intensity and polarity of the electric field measured during the course of 15 thunderstorms. In negative electric fields (i.e. accelerating negative charges downwards), the counting rates increase with increasing electric field strength. In positive fields, the rates decrease with field intensity until a certain value of the field EFmin (whose value depends on the event multiplicity), above which the rates begin increasing. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we found that this peculiar behavior can be well described by the presence of an electric field in a layer of thickness of a few hundred meters in the atmosphere above the detector, which accelerates/decelerates the secondary shower particles of opposite charge, modifying the number of particles with energy exceeding the detector threshold. These results, for the first time, give a consistent explanation for the origin of the variation of the electron/positron flux observed for decades by high altitude cosmic ray detectors during thunderstorms.

Ensuring Data Integrity in Electronic Health Records: A Quality Health Care Implication

An Electronic Health Record (EHR) system must enable efficient availability of meaningful, accurate and complete data to assist improved clinical administration through the development, implementation and optimisation of clinical pathways. Therefore data integrity is the driving force in EHR systems and is an essential aspect of service delivery at all levels. However, preserving data integrity in EHR systems has become a major problem because of its consequences in promoting high standards of patient care. In this paper, we review and address the impact of data integrity of the use of EHR system and its associated issues. We determine and analyse three phases of data integrity of an EHR system. Finally, we also present an appropriate method to preserve the integrity in EHR systems. To analyse and evaluate the data integrity, one of the major clinical systems in Australia is considered. This will demonstrate the impact on quality and safety of patient care.

Synthesis of antisymmetric spin exchange interaction and entanglement generation with chiral spin states in a superconducting circuit

We have synthesized the anti-symmetric spin exchange interaction (ASI), which is also called the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in a superconducting circuit containing five superconducting qubits connected to a bus resonator, by periodically modulating the transition frequencies of the qubits with different modulation phases. This allows us to show the chiral spin dynamics in three-, four- and five-spin clusters. We also demonstrate a three-spin chiral logic gate and entangle up to five qubits in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. Our results pave the way for quantum simulation of magnetism with ASI and quantum computation with chiral spin states.

Evaluation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field Strength Using the Cosmic-Ray Shadow of the Sun

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field.

High-resolution imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy of penumbral decay

Combining high-resolution spectropolarimetric and imaging data is key to understanding the decay process of sunspots as it allows us scrutinizing the velocity and magnetic fields of sunspots and their surroundings. Active region NOAA 12597 was observed on 24/09/2016 with the 1.5-m GREGOR solar telescope using high-spatial resolution imaging as well as imaging spectroscopy and near-infrared (NIR) spectropolarimetry. Horizontal proper motions were estimated with LCT, whereas LOS velocities were computed with spectral line fitting methods. The magnetic field properties were inferred with the SIR code for the Si I and Ca I NIR lines. At the time of the GREGOR observations, the leading sunspot had two light-bridges indicating the onset of its decay. One of the light-bridges disappeared, and an elongated, dark umbral core at its edge appeared in a decaying penumbral sector facing the newly emerging flux. The flow and magnetic field properties of this penumbral sector exhibited weak Evershed flow, moat flow, and horizontal magnetic field. The penumbral gap adjacent to the elongated umbral core and the penumbra in that penumbral sector displayed LOS velocities similar to granulation. The separating polarities of a new flux system interacted with the leading and central part of the already established active region. As a consequence, the leading spot rotated 55-degree in clockwise direction over 12 hours. In the high-resolution observations of a decaying sunspot, the penumbral filaments facing flux emergence site contained a darkened area resembling an umbral core filled with umbral dots. This umbral core had velocity and magnetic field properties similar to the sunspot umbra. This implies that the horizontal magnetic fields in the decaying penumbra became vertical as observed in flare-induced rapid penumbral decay, but on a very different time-scale.

A rational design of microwire/CNT hybrid fiber for tunable microwire metacomposites

Metacomposites are a type of engineering composite materials with metamaterial properties. We propose a design of hybrid filler consisting of ferromagnetic microwire and carbon nanotube to enable a tunable microwire metacomposite. There shows a sophisticated dependency of plasma frequency and bandwidth of double negative region on the carbon nanotube coating. Factors such as coating thickness, uniformity, morphology and number of microwires conspire to the formulation of the double negative characteristics. The intricate role of CNT on modulating negative ε and μ is elucidated by the plasma frequency formula and split-close paths model based on the layer-like structure of CNT coating.

Pulsar Searches with the SKA

The Square Kilometre Array will be an amazing instrument for pulsar astronomy. While the full SKA will be sensitive enough to detect all pulsars in the Galaxy visible from Earth, already with SKA1, pulsar searches will discover enough pulsars to increase the currently known population by a factor of four, no doubt including a range of amazing unknown sources. Real time processing is needed to deal with the 60 PB of pulsar search data collected per day, using a signal processing pipeline required to perform more than 10 POps. Here we present the suggested design of the pulsar search engine for the SKA and discuss challenges and solutions to the pulsar search venture.
