Recent CMS searches for exotic phenomena beyond the Standard Model

The results of several recent CMS searches for exotic phenomena beyond the Standard Model are presented in this talk. Two searches look for new physics in a final state with a vector boson and missing transverse energy. Three searches target massive resonances decaying to a Higgs boson and a vector boson. Finally, preliminary results are presented for the first CMS search for exotic phenomena using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV data, the search for dijet resonances.

Performance of the Cathode Strip Chamber endcap muon detectors in Run 2

Since the end of Run 1 of the LHC in 2012, the outermost ring has been added to the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) endcap muon detector, and the readout electronics of the innermost ring of CSCs have been upgraded to accommodate the larger luminosity and collision energy anticipated in Run 2. A major effort was required to build, install, and commission these new chambers and electronics. This talk summarizes the improvements made during this upgrade and presents the performance of the CSC detector during the early stages of Run 2.

Search for disappearing tracks

We present a search for long-lived charged particles that decay within the CMS detector and produce the signature of a disappearing track. Disappearing tracks are identified as those with little or no associated calorimeter energy deposits and with missing hits in the outer layers of the tracker. The search uses proton-proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb$^{-1}$. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model and in terms of the phenomenological MSSM.

Thinking outside the beamspot: Other SUSY searches at the LHC (long-lived particles and R-parity violation)

Supersymmetric particles that are long-lived or violate R-parity could evade many conventional searches for supersymmetry. This talk presents the latest results of searches for supersymmetry with long-lived particles or R-parity violation performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations using $\sim$20 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV delivered by the LHC.

Study of B --> pi l nu and B --> rho l nu decays and determination of |Vub| at BaBar

We report a measurement of the branching fractions for $B^{0} \rightarrow π^- \ell^+ν$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow ρ^-\ell^+ν$ decays, using charged and neutral $B$ decays with isospin constraints. We find ${\cal B}(B^{0} \rightarrow π^- \ell^+ν} = (1.41 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-4}$, and ${\cal B}(B^{0} \rightarrow ρ^-\ell^+ν} = (1.75 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We measure $Δ{\cal B}/Δq^2$, with 6 $q^2$ bins for $B^{0} \rightarrow π^- \ell^+ν$ and 3 \q2 bins for $B^{0} \rightarrow ρ^-\ell^+ν$, and compare the distributions in data with theoretical predictions for the form factors. We use these branching fractions and form-factor calculations to determine $|V_{ub}|$. Based on a combined fit to the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD calculation and data over the full $q^2$ range, we find $|V_{ub}| = (2.95 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$.
