Low-energy couplings of QCD from topological zero-mode wave functions

By matching 1/m^2 divergences in finite-volume two-point correlation functions of the scalar or pseudoscalar densities with those obtained in chiral perturbation theory, we derive a relation between the Dirac operator zero-mode eigenfunctions at fixed non-trivial topology and the low-energy constants of QCD. We investigate the feasibility of using this relation to extract the pion decay constant, by computing the zero-mode correlation functions on the lattice in the quenched approximation and comparing them with the corresponding expressions in quenched chiral perturbation theory.

WG V Conveners' Report: Charm Inputs for CKM Physics

We introduce the contributions to the proceedings of Working Group V. The main topics were: present and future experiments dedicated to charm physics, the interplay between high-precision measurements and better control over theoretical uncertainties, and searches for signals of new physics in the charm sector. The comparison of Lattice QCD calculations with precise measurements of charm semi-leptonic and leptonic decays can have a major impact on the determination of CKM matrix elements from measurements of B meson decays.

Lattice QCD Calculations on Commodity Clusters at DESY

Lattice Gauge Theory is an integral part of particle physics that requires high performance computing in the multi-Tflops regime. These requirements are motivated by the rich research program and the physics milestones to be reached by the lattice community. Over the last years the enormous gains in processor performance, memory bandwidth, and external I/O bandwidth for parallel applications have made commodity clusters exploiting PCs or workstations also suitable for large Lattice Gauge Theory applications. For more than one year two clusters have been operated at the two DESY sites in Hamburg and Zeuthen, consisting of 32 resp. 16 dual-CPU PCs, equipped with Intel Pentium 4 Xeon processors. Interconnection of the nodes is done by way of Myrinet. Linux was chosen as the operating system. In the course of the projects benchmark programs for architectural studies were developed. The performance of the Wilson-Dirac Operator (also in an even-odd preconditioned version) as the inner loop of the Lattice QCD (LQCD) algorithms plays the most important role in classifying the hardware basis to be used. Using the SIMD Streaming Extensions (SSE/SSE2) on Intel's Pentium 4 Xeon CPUs give promising results for both the single CPU and the parallel version. The parallel performance, in addition to the CPU power and the memory throughput, is nevertheless strongly influenced by the behavior of hardware components like the PC chip-set and the communication interfaces. The paper covers the physics motivation for using PC clusters as well as a system description, operating experiences, and benchmark results for various hardware.

Numerical techniques for lattice QCD in the $ε$--regime

In lattice QCD it is possible, in principle, to determine the parameters in the effective chiral lagrangian (including weak interaction couplings) by performing numerical simulations in the $ε$--regime, i.e. at quark masses where the physical extent of the lattice is much smaller than the Compton wave length of the pion. The use of a formulation of the lattice theory that preserves chiral symmetry is attractive in this context, but the numerical implementation of any such approach requires special care in this kinematical situation due to the presence of some very low eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. We discuss a set of techniques (low-mode preconditioning and adapted-precision algorithms in particular) that make such computations numerically safe and more efficient by a large factor.

Effects of non-perturbatively improved dynamical fermions in QCD at fixed lattice spacing

We present results for the static inter-quark potential, lightest glueballs, light hadron spectrum and topological susceptibility using a non-perturbatively improved action on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at a set of values of the bare gauge coupling and bare dynamical quark mass chosen to keep the lattice size fixed in physical units ($\sim 1.7$ fm). By comparing these measurements with a matched quenched ensemble, we study the effects due to two degenerate flavours of dynamical quarks. With the greater control over residual lattice spacing effects which these methods afford, we find some evidence of charge screening and some minor effects on the light hadron spectrum over the range of quark masses studied ($M_{PS}/M_{V}\ge0.58$). More substantial differences between quenched and unquenched simulations are observed in measurements of topological quantities.

Is the up-quark massless?

We report on determinations of the low-energy constants alpha5 and alpha8 in the effective chiral Lagrangian at O(p^4), using lattice simulations with N_f=2 flavours of dynamical quarks. Precise knowledge of these constants is required to test the hypothesis whether or not the up-quark is massless. Our results are obtained by studying the quark mass dependence of suitably defined ratios of pseudoscalar meson masses and matrix elements. Although comparisons with an earlier study in the quenched approximation reveal small qualitative differences in the quark mass behaviour, numerical estimates for alpha5 and alpha8 show only a weak dependence on the number of dynamical quark flavours. Our results disfavour the possibility of a massless up-quark, provided that the quark mass dependence in the physical three-flavour case is not fundamentally different from the two-flavour case studied here.

Quenched QCD with O(a) improvement: I. The spectrum of light hadrons

We present a comprehensive study of the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, as well as octet and decuplet baryons computed in O(a) improved quenched lattice QCD. Results have been obtained using the non-perturbative definition of the improvement coefficient c_sw, and also its estimate in tadpole improved perturbation theory. We investigate effects of improvement on the incidence of exceptional configurations, mass splittings and the parameter J. By combining the results obtained using non-perturbative and tadpole improvement in a simultaneous continuum extrapolation we can compare our spectral data to experiment. We confirm earlier findings by the CP-PACS Collaboration that the quenched light hadron spectrum agrees with experiment at the 10% level.

String Breaking in Non-Abelian Gauge Theories with Fundamental Matter Fields

We present clear numerical evidence for string breaking in three-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with fundamental bosonic matter through a mixing analysis between Wilson loops and meson operators representing bound states of a static source and a dynamical scalar. The breaking scale is calculated in the continuum limit. In units of the lightest glueball we find $r_{\rm b} m_G\approx13.6$. The implications of our results for QCD are discussed.

The static potential beyond screening in the 3d SU(2) Higgs model

The static potential in the 3d SU(2) Higgs model is computed by a variational calculation employing Wilson loops and two-meson operators. String breaking is demonstrated numerically, the breaking scale is determined and the results are compared with a quenched calculation.

Light hadron spectroscopy with O(a) improved dynamical fermions

We present the first results for the static quark potential and the light hadron spectrum using dynamical fermions at $β=5.2$ using an O(a) improved Wilson fermion action together with the standard Wilson plaquette action for the gauge part. Sea quark masses were chosen such that the pseudoscalar-vector mass ratio, m_PS/m_V$, varies from 0.86 to 0.67. Finite-size effects are studied by using three different volumes, 8^3\cdot 24, 12^3\cdot 24 and 16^3\cdot 24. Comparing our results to previous ones obtained using the quenched approximation, we find evidence for sea quark effects in quantities like the static quark potential and the vector-pseudoscalar hyperfine splitting.

Precision computation of a low-energy reference scale in quenched lattice QCD

We present results for the reference scale r_0 in SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory for beta = 6/g_0^2 in the range 5.7 <= beta <= 6.57. The high relative accuracy of 0.3-0.6% in r_0/a was achieved through good statistics, the application of a multi-hit procedure and a variational approach in the computation of Wilson loops. A precise definition of the force used to extract r_0 has been used throughout the calculation which guarantees that r_0/a is a smooth function of the bare coupling and that subsequent continuum extrapolations are possible. The results are applied to the continuum extrapolations of the energy gap Delta in the static quark potential and the scale L_max/r_0 used in the calculation of the running coupling constant.

Scalar-gauge dynamics in (2+1) dimensions at small and large scalar couplings

We present the results of a detailed calculation of the excitation spectrum of states with quantum numbers J^{PC}=0++, 1-- and 2++ in the three-dimensional SU(2) Higgs model at two values of the scalar self-coupling and for fixed gauge coupling. In the context of studies of the electroweak phase transition at finite temperature these couplings correpond to tree-level, zero temperature Higgs masses of 35 GeV and 120 GeV, respectively. We also study the properties of Polyakov loop operators, which serve to test the confining properties of the model in the symmetric phase. At both values of the scalar coupling we obtain masses of bound states consisting entirely of gauge degrees of freedom ("W-balls"), which are very close to those obtained in the pure gauge theory. We conclude that the previously observed, approximate decoupling of the scalar and gauge sectors of the theory persists at large scalar couplings. We study the crossover region at large scalar coupling and present a scenario how the confining properties of the model in the symmetric phase are lost inside the crossover by means of flux tube decay. We conclude that the underlying dynamics responsible for the observed dense spectrum of states in the Higgs region at large couplings must be different from that in the symmetric phase.

Non-perturbative quark mass renormalization

We show that the renormalization factor relating the renormalization group invariant quark masses to the bare quark masses computed in lattice QCD can be determined non-perturbatively. The calculation is based on an extension of a finite-size technique previously employed to compute the running coupling in quenched QCD. As a by-product we obtain the $Λ$--parameter in this theory with completely controlled errors.

The effect of tree-level and mean-field improvement on the light-hadron spectrum in quenched QCD

We compute the light hadron mass spectrum at beta=5.7 using the O(a) improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (SW) fermion action with two choices of the clover coefficient: the classical value, c=1, and a mean-field or tadpole-improved estimate c=1.57. We compare our results with those of the GF11 Collaboration who use the Wilson fermion action (c=0). We find that changing c from zero to 1 and 1.57 leads to significant differences in the masses of the chirally extrapolated and strange pseudoscalar and vector mesons, the nucleon, the Delta, and also in the Edinburgh plot. A number of other quantities, for example m_V^2-m_PS^2, J, am_K/am_ρand am_{K^*}/am_ρdo not appear to change significantly. We also investigate the effect of changing the lattice volume from approximately (2 fm)^3 to (2.6 fm)^3. We find that the meson masses are consistent to within one standard deviation and baryon masses are consistent to within two standard deviations.

Mass Spectrum of the 3d SU(2) Higgs Model and the Symmetric Electroweak Phase

We present results for the masses of the low-lying states with quantum numbers $0^{++}$, $2^{++}$ and $1^{--}$ as well as Polyakov line correlations in the Higgs and confinement regions of the 3d SU(2) Higgs model. In the confinement phase we find a dense spectrum of bound states approximately split into two disjoint sectors. One consists of W-balls nearly identical to the glueball spectrum of the pure gauge theory, the other of bound states of scalars.

Some new results in O(a) improved lattice QCD

It is shown how on-shell O(a) improvement can be implemented non-perturbatively in lattice QCD with Wilson quarks. Improvement conditions are obtained by requiring the PCAC relation to hold exactly in certain matrix elements. These are derived from the QCD Schrödinger functional which enables us to simulate directly at vanishing quark masses. In the quenched approximation and for bare couplings in the range $0\leq g_0\leq 1$, we determine the improved action, the improved axial current, the additive renormalization of the quark mass and the isospin current normalization constants Z_A and Z_V.
