Fragment Production in Non-central Collisions of Intermediate Energy Heavy Ions

The defining characteristics of fragment emission resulting from the non-central collision of 114Cd ions with 92Mo target nuclei at E/A = 50 MeV are presented. Charge correlations and average relative velocities for mid-velocity fragment emission exhibit significant differences when compared to standard statistical decay. These differences associated with similar velocity dissipation are indicative of the influence of the entrance channel dynamics on the fragment production process.

High Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopic Constraints on Cooling Flow Models of Clusters of Galaxies and Gaseous Haloes Around Elliptical Galaxies

In many clusters of galaxies, the cooling time at the core of the intracluster medium is much less than the age of the system, suggesting that the the gas should continually lose energy by radiation. Simple thermodynamic arguments then require that the expected "cooling flow" should exhibit a specific spectroscopic signature, characterized by a differential emission measure distribution that is inversely proportional to the cooling function of the plasma. That prediction can be quantitatively tested for the first time by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) experiment on XMM-Newton, which provides high resolution X-ray spectra, even for moderately extended sources like clusters. We present RGS data on 14 separate cooling flow clusters, sampling a very wide range in mass deposition rate. Surprisingly, in all cases we find a systematic deficit of low temperature emission relative to the predictions of the cooling flow models. However, we do see evidence for cooling flow gas at temperatures just below the cluster background temperature, $T_0$, roughly down to $T_0/2$. These results are difficult to reconcile with most of the possible explanations for the cooling flow problem that have been proposed to date. We also present RGS data on the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 4636. In this case, we detect evidence for resonance emission line scattering of high oscillator strength Fe L-shell emission lines within the gaseous halo of the galaxy. The detection of that effect leads to very tight constraints on physical conditions within the halo. However, here again, the expected signature of a cooling flow is not detected, perhaps suggesting some fundamental uncertainty in our understanding of radiative cooling in low density cosmic plasmas.

Interfaces of polydisperse fluids : surface tension and adsorption properties

We consider a system of spherical colloidal particles with a size polydispersity and use a simple van der Waals description in order to study the combined effect of both the polydispersity and the spatial non-uniformity induced by a planar interface between a low-density fluid phase (enriched in small particles) and a high-density fluid phase (enriched in large particles). We find a strong adsorption of small particles at the interface, the latter being broadened with respect to the monodisperse case. We also find that the surface tension of the polydisperse system results from a competition between the tendancy of the polydispersity to lower the surface tension and its tendancy to raise the critical-point temperature (i.e. its tendancy to favor phase separation) with the former tendancy winning at low temperatures and the latter at the higher temperatures.

Combining quantum and classical density functional theory for ion-electron mixtures

We combine techniques from quantum and from classical density functional theory (DFT) to describe electron-ion mixtures. For homogeneous systems, we show how to calculate ion-ion and ion-electron correlation functions within Chihara's quantum hypernetted chain approximation, which we derive within a DFT formulation. We also sketch out how to apply the DFT formulation to inhomogeneous electron-ion mixtures, and use this to study the electron distribution at the liquid-solid interface of Al.

High Resolution Observations of the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4636 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer On-Board XMM-Newton

We present the first high spectral resolution X-ray observation of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on-board the XMM-Newton Observatory. The resulting spectrum contains a wealth of emission lines from various charge states of oxygen, neon, magnesium, and iron. Examination of the cross-dispersion profiles of several of these lines provides clear, unambiguous evidence of resonance scattering by the highest oscillator strength lines, as well as a weak temperature gradient in the inner regions of the interstellar medium. We invoke a sophisticated new Monte Carlo technique which allows us to properly account for these effects in performing quantitative fits to the spectrum. Our spectral fits are not subject to many of the systematics that have plagued earlier investigations. The derived metal abundances are higher than have been inferred from prior, lower spectral resolution observations of this source (Awaki et al. 1994), but are still incompatible with conventional chemical enrichment models of elliptical galaxies. In addition, our data are incompatible with standard cooling flow models for this system - our derived upper limit to the mass deposition rate is below the predicted value by a factor of 3--5.

Fragment Isospin as a Probe of Heavy-Ion Collisions

Isotope ratios of fragments produced at mid-rapidity in peripheral and central collisions of 114Cd ions with 92Mo and 98Mo target nuclei at E/A = 50 MeV are compared. Neutron-rich isotopes are preferentially produced in central collisions as compared to peripheral collisions. The influence of the size (A), density, N/Z, E*/A, and Eflow/A of the emitting source on the measured isotope ratios was explored by comparison with a statistical model (SMM). The mid-rapidity region associated with peripheral collisions does not appear to be neutron-enriched relative to central collisions.

Three-phase fractionation of polydisperse fluids

It is shown that the van der Waals free-energy of polydisperse fluids, as introduced previously (L. Bellier-Castella, H. Xu and M. Baus, {J. Chem. Phys.} {113}, 8337 (2000)), predicts that for certain thermodynamic states (e.g. low temperatures and large polydispersities) the ordinary two-phase coexistences become metastable relative to a fractionation of the system into three phases, reducing thereby the polydispersity of each of the coexisting phases.

Finding The Sign Of A Function Value By Binary Cellular Automaton

Given a continuous function $f(x)$, suppose that the sign of $f$ only has finitely many discontinuous points in the interval $[0,1]$. We show how to use a sequence of one dimensional deterministic binary cellular automata to determine the sign of $f(ρ)$ where $ρ$ is the (number) density of 1s in an arbitrarily given bit string of finite length provided that $f$ satisfies certain technical conditions.

Isotopic Scaling in Nuclear Reactions

A three parameter scaling relationship between isotopic distributions for elements with Z$\leq 8$ has been observed that allows a simple description of the dependence of such distributions on the overall isospin of the system. This scaling law (termed iso-scaling) applies for a variety of reaction mechanisms that are dominated by phase space, including evaporation, multifragmentation and deeply inelastic scattering. The origins of this scaling behavior for the various reaction mechanisms are explained. For multifragmentation processes, the systematics is influenced by the density dependence of the asymmetry term of the equation of state.

Exactly Solvable Single Lane Highway Traffic Model With Tollbooths

Tolls are collected on many highways as a means of traffic control and revenue generation. However, the presence of tollbooths on highway surely slows down traffic flow. Here, we investigate how the presence of tollbooths affect the average car speed using a simple-minded single lane deterministic discrete traffic model. More importantly, the model is exactly solvable.

Phase diagrams of polydisperse van der Waals fluids

The phase behavior of a system composed of spherical particles with a monomodal size distribution is investigated theoretically within the context of the van der Waals approximation for polydisperse fluids. It is shown how the binodals, spinodals, cloud-point and shadow curves as well as all the (polydispersity induced) critical points can be obtained for a variety of interaction potentials. The polydispersity induced modifications of the phase diagram (even for a polydispersity index $I$ as small as $I\approx 1.01$) should be observable in some colloidal dispersions.

Discovery of the Central Excess Brightness in Hard X-rays in the Cluster of Galaxies Abell 1795

Using the X-ray data from \ASCA, spectral and spatial properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of the cD cluster Abell 1795 are studied, up to a radial distance of $\sim 12'$ ($\sim 1.3$ $h_{50}^{-1}$ kpc). The ICM temperature and abundance are spatially rather constant, although the cool emission component is reconfirmed in the central region. The azimuthally- averaged radial X-ray surface brightness profiles are very similar between soft (0.7--3 keV) and hard (3--10 keV) energy bands, and neither can be fitted with a single-$β$ model due to a strong data excess within $\sim5'$ of the cluster center. In contrast, double-$β$ models can successfully reproduce the overall brightness profiles both in the soft and hard energy bands, as well as that derived with the \ROSAT PSPC. Properties of the central excess brightness are very similar over the 0.2--10 keV energy range spanned by \ROSAT and \ASCA. Thus, the excess X-ray emission from the core region of this cluster is confirmed for the first time in hard X-rays above 3 keV. This indicates that the shape of the gravitational potential becomes deeper than the King-type one towards the cluster center. Radial profiles of the total gravitating matter, calculated using the double-$β$ model, reveal an excess mass of $\sim 3 \times 10^{13}~ M_{\odot}$ within $\sim 150 h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc of the cluster center. This suggests a hierarchy in the gravitational potential corresponding to the cD galaxy and the entire cluster.

Discovery of a Large-Scale Abundance Gradient in the Cluster of Galaxies AWM7 with ASCA

A large-scale gradient in the metal abundance has been detected with ASCA from an X-ray bright cluster of galaxies AWM7. The metal abundance shows a peak of 0.5 solar at the center and smoothly declines to <~ 0.2 solar at a radius of 500 kpc. The gas temperature is found to be constant at 3.8 keV. The radial distribution of iron can be fit with a beta-model with beta ~ 0.8 assuming the same core radius (115 kpc) as that of the intracluster medium. The metal distribution in AWM7 suggests that the gas injected from galaxies is not efficiently mixed in the cluster space and traces the distribution of galaxies.
