Sealing off a carbon nanotube with a self-assembled aqueous valve for the storage of hydrogen in GPa pressure

The end section of a carbon nanotube, cut by acid treatment, contains hydrophillic oxygen groups. Water molecules can self-assemble around these groups to seal off a carbon nanotube and form an "aqueous valve". Molecular dynamics simulations on single-wall (12,12) and (15,15) tubes with dangling carboxyl groups show that the formation of aqueous valves can be achieved both in the absence of and in the presence of high pressure hydrogen. Furthermore, significant diffusion barriers through aqueous valves are identified. It indicates that such valves could hold hydrogen inside the tube with GPa pressure. Releasing hydrogen is easily achieved by melting the "aqueous valve". Such a design provides a recyclable and non- destructive way to store hydrogen in GPa pressure. Under the storage conditions dictated by sealing off the container in liquid water, the hydrogen density inside the container is higher than that for solid hydrogen, which promises excellent weight storage efficiency.

Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is $R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$. A rate-only analysis finds $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst})$ in a three-neutrino framework.

Measurements and ab initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the High Temperature Ferroelectric Transition in Hexagonal RMnO3

Measurements of the structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R=rare earths (Ho) and Y) for temperatures significantly above the ferroelectric transition temperature (TFE) were conducted to determine the nature of the transition. The local and long range structural measurements were complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. With respect to the Mn sites in YMnO3 and HoMnO3, we find no large atomic (bond distances or thermal factors), electronic structure changes or rehybridization on crossing TFE from local structural methods. The local symmetry about the Mn sites is preserved. With respect to the local structure about the Ho sites, a reduction of the average Ho-O bond with increased temperature is found. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations on HoMnO3 reveal the detailed motions of all ions. Above ~900 K there are large displacements of the Ho, O3 and O4 ions along the z-axis which reduce the buckling of the MnO3/O4 planes. The changes result in O3/O4 ions moving to towards central points between pairs of Ho ions on the z-axis. These structural changes make the coordination of Ho sites more symmetric thus extinguishing the electric polarization. At significantly higher temperatures, rotation of the MnO5 polyhedra occurs without a significant change in electric polarization. The born effective charge tensor is found to be highly anisotropic at the O sites but does not change appreciably at high temperatures.

Observation of Anomalous Phonons in E-Type Orthorhombic REMnO3

We observe the appearance of a phonon near the lock-in temperature in orthorhombic REMnO3 (RE: Lu and Ho) and anomalous phonon hardening in orthorhombic LuMnO3. The anomalous phonon occurs at the onset of spontaneous polarization. No such changes were found in incommensurate orthorhombic DyMnO3. These observations directly reveal different electric polarization mechanisms in the E-type and IC-type REMnO3.

Sieving hydrogen based on its high compressibility

A molecular sieve for hydrogen is presented based on a carbon nanotube intramolecular junction and a $C_{60}$. The small interspace formed between $C_{60}$ and junction provides a size changeable channel for the permselectivity of hydrogen while blocking $Ne$ and $Ar$. The sieving mechanism is due to the high compressibility of hydrogen.

Numerical Study of Transition to Stripe Phases in High Temperature Superconductors Under a Strong Magnetic Field

The nature of spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) in the mixed state of high T_c superconductors (HTS) is investigated by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and an effective model Hamiltonian with competing SDW and d-wave superconductivity interactions. We show that there exists a critical onsite Coulomb interaction U_c. For optimally doped sample, a two dimensional SDW and CDW modulations are induced for U < U_c while SDW and CDW orders become antiferromagnetic (AF) and charge stripes for U > U_c. These stripe orders are stabilized and enhanced near the vortex cores. The wavelengths of the AF stripes and charge stripes are found respectively to be 8 a and 4 a with a as the lattice constant. We show that our results could be applied to understand several recent experiments on HTS.
