Epitaxial-strain effect on charge/orbital order in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films

Effect of growth orientation on charge- and orbital-ordering (CO-OO) phenomena has been studied for Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 epitaxial thin films fabricated on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates by means of resistivity, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy measurements. CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large in the (011)-film as in the (001)-film. These results demonstrate that various properties of CO-OO phenomena can be controlled with the growth orientation via the epitaxial strain from the substrate.

Quantum Diffusion in Polaron Model of poly(dG)-poly(dC) and poly(dA)-poly(dT) DNA polymers

We numerically investigate quantum diffusion of an electron in a model of poly(dG)-poly(dC) and poly(dA)-poly(dT) DNA polymers with fluctuation of the parameters due to the impact of colored noise. The randomness is introduced by fluctuations of distance between two consecutive bases along the stacked base pairs. We demonstrate that in the model the decay time of the correlation can control the spread of the electronic wavepacket. Furthermore it is shown that in a motional narrowing regime the averaging over fluctuation causes ballistic propagation of the wavepacket, and in the adiabatic regime the electronic states are affected by localization.

Effect of aromatic hydrocarbon addition on in situ powder-in-tube processed MgB2 tapes

We fabricated in situ powder-in-tube processed MgB2/Fe tapes using aromatic hydrocarbon of benzene, naphthalene, and thiophene as additives, and investigated the superconducting properties. We found that these aromatic hydrocarbons were very effective for increasing the Jc values. The Jc values of 20mol% benzene-added tapes reached 130A/mm2 at 4.2K and 10T. This value was almost comparable to that of 10mol% SiC-added tapes and about four times higher than that of tapes with no additions. Microstructure analyses suggest that this Jc enhancement is due to both the substitution of carbon for boron in MgB2 and the smaller MgB2 grain size.

Determination of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect of SrRuO$_3$

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ films with varying lattice parameters is investigated, and analyzed according to the Berry-phase scenario. SrRuO$_3$ thin films were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates directly, or using intermediate buffer layers, in order to finely control the epitaxial strain. The AHE of the different films exhibits intrinsic features such as the sign change of the Hall resistivity with the temperature, even for small thicknesses of SrRuO$_3$. However, the anomalous Hall conductivity is greatly reduced from its intrinsic value as the carrier scattering is increased when the epitaxial strain is released. We argue that the AHE of fully strained SrRuO$_3$ film with low residual resistivity represents the intrinsic AHE of SrRuO$_3$.

Scaling of the anomalous Hall effect in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of ferromagnetic thin films of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$RuO$_3$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.4) is studied as a function of $x$ and temperature $T$. As $x$ increases, both the transition temperature $T_c$ and the magnetization $M$ are reduced and vanish near $x \sim$ 0.7. For all compositions, the transverse resistivity $ρ_{H}$ varies non-monotonously with $T$, and even changes sign, thus violating the conventional expression $ρ_{H}=R_o B + 4πR_s M(T)$ ($B$ is the magnetic induction, while $R_o$ and $R_s$ are the ordinary and anomalous Hall coefficients). From the rather complicated data of $ρ_H$, we find a scaling behavior of the transverse conductivity $σ_{xy}$ with $M(T)$, which is well reproduced by the first-principles band calculation assuming the intrinsic origin of the AHE.

Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Monopoles in Momentum-Space

Efforts to find the magnetic monopole in real space have been made in cosmic rays and in accelerators, but up to now there is no firm evidence for its existence due to the very heavy mass $\sim 10^{16}$GeV. However, we show that the magnetic monopole can appear in the crystal-momentum space of solids in the accessible low energy region ($\sim0.1-1$eV) in the context of the anomalous Hall effect. We report experimental results together with first-principles calculations on the ferromagnetic crystal SrRuO$_3$ that provide evidence for the magnetic monopole in the crystal-momentum space.

Z_3 symmetry and W_3 algebra in lattice vertex operator algebras

The W_3 algebra of central charge 6/5 is realized as a subalgebra of the vertex operator algebra V_{\sqrt{2}A_2} associated with a lattice of type \sqrt{2}A_2 by using both coset construction and orbifold theory. It is proved that W_3 is rational. Its irreducible modules are classified and constructed explicitly. The characters of those irreducible modules are also computed.

Random hopping fermions on bipartite lattices: Density of states, inverse participation ratios, and their correlations in a strong disorder regime

We study Anderson localization of non-interacting random hopping fermions on bipartite lattices in two dimensions, focusing our attention to strong disorder features of the model. We concentrate ourselves on specific models with a linear dispersion in the vicinity of the band center, which can be described by a Dirac fermion in the continuum limit. Based on the recent renormalization group method developed by Carpentier and Le Doussal for the XY gauge glass model, we calculate the density of states, inverse participation ratios, and their spatial correlations. It turns out that their behavior is quite different from those expected within naive weak disorder approaches.

Charge and sodium ordering in beta-Na_0.33V_2O_5

Polarized Raman and optical spectra for the quasi one-dimensional metallic vanadate beta-Na0.33V2O3 are reported for various temperatures. The spectra are discussed in the light of the sodium and charge ordering transitions occurring in this material, and demonstrate the presence of strong electron phonon coupling.

Phase-locked and phase drift solutions of phase oscillators with asymmetric coupling strengths

Phase-locked solutions of coupled oscillators are studied with asymmetric coupling strengths or inhomogeneous natural frequencies. The solutions show remarkable profiles of phase lags from the pacemaker corresponding to the ratio of upward and downward coupling strengths. By means of the existence condition of phase-locked solutions, the transition points from phase-locked to phase drift states are estimated. The application of the existence condition to the case of the linear gradient of natural frequency illustrates some scaling properties in the frequency diagrams.

Two-dimensional Dirac fermions with random axial-vector potential

A Dirac fermion model with random axial-vector potential is proposed. At a special strength of randomness, the symmetry of the action is enhanced, which is due to the gauge symmetry à la Nishimori. Some exact scaling exponents of single-particle Green functions are computed. The relationship with the XY gauge glass model is discussed.

The magnetic ordering in the mixed valence compound beta-Na0.33V2O5

The low-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra and the static magnetization data obtained for the stoichiometric single crystals of $β$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$ indicate that this quasi-one-dimensional mixed valence (V4+/V5+) compound demonstrates at $T_N=22$ K the phase transition into the canted antiferromagnetically ordered state. The spontaneous magnetization of $3.4\times 10^{-3}$ $μ_B$ per V$^{4+}$ ion was found to be oriented along the two-fold $b$ axis of the monoclinic structure, the vector of antiferromagnetism is aligned with the $a$ axis and the Dzyaloshinsky vector is parallel to the $c$-axis. The experimental data were successfully described in the frame of the macroscopic spin dynamics and the following values for the macroscopic parameters of the spin system were obtained: the Dzyaloshinsky field $H_D=6$ kOe, the energy gaps of two branches of the spin wave spectrum $Δ_1=48$ GHz and $Δ_2=24$ GHz.

Pattern formation of reaction-diffusion system having self-determined flow in the amoeboid organism of Physarum plasmodium

The amoeboid organism, the plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum, behaves on the basis of spatio-temporal pattern formation by local contraction-oscillators. This biological system can be regarded as a reaction-diffusion system which has spatial interaction by active flow of protoplasmic sol in the cell. Paying attention to the physiological evidence that the flow is determined by contraction pattern in the plasmodium, a reaction-diffusion system having self-determined flow arises. Such a coupling of reaction-diffusion-advection is a characteristic of the biological system, and is expected to relate with control mechanism of amoeboid behaviours. Hence, we have studied effects of the self-determined flow on pattern formation of simple reaction-diffusion systems. By weakly nonlinear analysis near a trivial solution, the envelope dynamics follows the complex Ginzburg-Landau type equation just after bifurcation occurs at finite wave number. The flow term affects the nonlinear term of the equation through the critical wave number squared. Contrary to this, wave number isn't explicitly effective with lack of flow or constant flow. Thus, spatial size of pattern is especially important for regulating pattern formation in the plasmodium. On the other hand, the flow term is negligible in the vicinity of bifurcation at infinitely small wave number, and therefore the pattern formation by simple reaction-diffusion will also hold. A physiological role of pattern formation as above is discussed.

The Exactly Solvable Simplest Model for Queue Dynamics

We present an exactly solvable model for queue dynamics. Our model is very simple but provides the essential property for such dynamics. As an example, the model has the traveling cluster solution as well as the homogeneous flow solution. The model is the limiting case of Optimal Velocity (OV) model, which is proposed for the car following model to induce traffic jam spontaneously.

Heaviside transform with respect to the mass in QCD

We propose the use of Heaviside transform with respect to the quark mass to investigate dynamical aspects of QCD. We show that at large momentum transfer the transformed propagator of massive quarks behaves softly and thus the dominant effect of explicit chiral symmetry breaking disappears through Heaviside transform. This suggests that the massless approximation would be more convenient to do in the transformed quantity than in the original one. As an example of explicit approximation, we estimate the massless value of the quark condensate.
