Ca2Y2Cu5O10: the first frustrated quasi-1D ferromagnet close to criticality

Ca2Y2Cu5O10 is build up from edge-shared CuO4 plaquettes forming spin chains. From inelastic neutron scattering data we extract an in-chain nearest neighbor exchange J1 approximately -170 K and the frustrating next neighbor J2 approximately 32 K interactions, both significantly larger than previous estimates. The ratio alpha= J2/J1 approximately 0.19 places the system very close to the critical point alpha_c=0.25 of the J1-J2 chain, but in the ferromagnetic regime. We establish that the vicinity to criticality only marginally affects the dispersion and coherence of the elementary spin-wave-like magnetic excitations, but instead results in a dramatic T-dependence of high-energy Zhang-Rice singlet excitation intensities.

Discrete-time quadrature feedback cooling of a radio-frequency mechanical resonator

We have employed a feedback cooling scheme, which combines high-frequency mixing with digital signal processing. The frequency and damping rate of a 2 MHz micromechanical resonator embedded in a dc SQUID are adjusted with the feedback, and active cooling to a temperature of 14.3 mK is demonstrated. This technique can be applied to GHz resonators and allows for flexible control strategies.

Structural evolution in the neutron-rich nuclei 106Zr and 108Zr

The low-lying states in 106Zr and 108Zr have been investigated by means of β-γ and isomer spectroscopy at the RI beam factory, respectively. A new isomer with a half-life of 620\pm150 ns has been identified in 108Zr. For the sequence of even-even Zr isotopes, the excitation energies of the first 2+ states reach a minimum at N = 64 and gradually increase as the neutron number increases up to N = 68, suggesting a deformed sub-shell closure at N = 64. The deformed ground state of 108Zr indicates that a spherical sub-shell gap predicted at N = 70 is not large enough to change the ground state of 108Zr to the spherical shape. The possibility of a tetrahedral shape isomer in 108Zr is also discussed.

Variation formulas for principal functions (II) Applications to variation for harmonic spans

For a domain $D$ in $\mathbb{C}_z$ with smooth boundary and for $a,b\in D, a\ne b$, we have the circular (radial) slit mapping $P(z)(Q(z))$ on $D$ such that $P(z)- \frac{1}{z-a}\ (Q(z)- \frac{1}{z-a})$ is regular at $a$ and $P(b)(Q(b))=0$, and we call $p(z)=\log |P(z)|\ (q(z)=\log|Q(z)|)$ the $L_1$-($L_0$-)principal function; \ $α=\log|P'(b)|$ $(β=\log|Q'(b)|)$ the $L_1$-($L_0$-)constant, and \ $s=α- β$ the harmonic span, for $D$. S.\,Hamano in \cite{hamano-2} showed the variation formula of the second order for the $L_1$-const. $α(t)$ for the moving domain $D(t)$ in $\mathbb{C}_z$ with $t \in B:=\{t\in \mathbb{C}: |t|<ρ\}$. We show the corresponding formula for the $L_0$-const. $β(t)$ for $D(t)$, and combine these formulas to obtain, if the total space ${\mathcal D}=\cup_{t\in B}(t, D(t)) $ is pseudoconvex in $ B \times \mathbb{C}_z$, then $s(t)$ is subharmonic on $B$. Since the geometric meaning of $s(t)$ is showed, this fact gives one of the relations between the conformal mappings on each fiber $D(t), t\in B$ and the pseudoconvexity of ${\mathcal D}$. As a simple application we obtain the subharmonicity of $\log \cosh d(t)$ on $B$, where $d(t)$ is the Poincaré distance between $a$ and $b$.

30S Beam Development and X-ray Bursts

Over the past three years, we have worked on developing a well-characterized 30S radioactive beam to be used in a future experiment aiming to directly measure the 30S(alpha,p) stellar reaction rate within the Gamow window of Type I X-ray bursts. The importance of the 30S(alpha,p) reaction to X-ray bursts is discussed. Given the astrophysical motivation, the successful results of and challenges involved in the production of a low-energy 30S beam are detailed. Finally, an overview of our future plans regarding this on-going project are presented.

New high magnetic field phase of the frustrated $S=1/2$ chain compound LiCuVO$_4$

Magnetization of the frustrated $S=1/2$ chain compound LiCuVO$_4$, focusing on high magnetic field phases, is reported. Besides a spin-flop transition and the transition from a planar spiral to a spin modulated structure observed recently, an additional transition was observed just below the saturation field. This newly observed magnetic phase is considered as a spin nematic phase, which was predicted theoretically but was not observed experimentally. The critical fields of this phase and its dM/dH curve are in good agreement with calculations performed in a microscopic model (M. E. Zhitomirsky and H. Tsunetsugu, preprint, arXiv:1003.4096v2).

Tunable backaction of a dc SQUID on an integrated micromechanical resonator

We have measured the backaction of a dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) position detector on an integrated 1 MHz flexural resonator. The frequency and quality factor of the micromechanical resonator can be tuned with bias current and applied magnetic flux. The backaction is caused by the Lorentz force due to the change in circulating current when the resonator displaces. The experimental features are reproduced by numerical calculations using the resistively and capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ) model.

Searching for Diffuse Nonthermal X-Rays from the Superbubbles N11 and N51D in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We report on observations of the superbubbles (SBs) N11 and N51D in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The interior of both SBs exhibits diffuse X-ray emission, which is well represented by thin thermal plasma models with a temperature of 0.2-0.3keV. The presence of nonthermal emission, claimed in previous works, is much less evident in our careful investigation. The 3-sigma upper limits of 2-10keV flux are 3.6*10^{-14}ergs/cm^2/s and 4.7*10^{-14}ergs/cm^2/s for N11 and N51D, respectively. The previous claims of the detection of nonthermal emission are probably due to the inaccurate estimation of the non X-ray background. We conclude that no credible nonthermal emission has been detected from the SBs in the LMC, with the exception of 30 Dor C.

Superconductivity at high Tc in neodymium-doped 1111-SrFeAsF system

Polycrystalline Sr1-xNdxFeAsF samples were prepared at various Nd-doping levels using both a stoichiometric mixture of the starting materials and in slight excess amounts of FeAs. Susceptibility and resistivity of the samples were studied down to 4 K revealing a probable coexistence of superconductivity and a magnetic ordering. Temperature dependence of resistivity for all the Nd-doped samples shows the presence of a transition below 15 K most likely originating from the magnetic ordering of Nd moments, while the spin-density-wave anomaly at 175 K survives up to 0.35 Nd-doping. Superconductivity only occurs above 0.40 Nd-doping with onset maximum Tc reaching as high as 52 K.

Cosmic Ray Tests of the Prototype TPC for the ILC Experiment

A time projection chamber (TPC) is a strong candidate for the central tracker of the international linear collider (ILC) experiment and we have been conducting a series of cosmic ray experiments under a magnetic field up to 4 T, using a small prototype TPC with a replaceable readout device: multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) or gas electron multiplier (GEM). We first confirmed that the MWPC readout could not be a fall-back option of the ILC-TPC under a strong axial magnetic field of 4 T since its spatial resolution suffered severely from the so called E x B effect in the vicinity of the wire planes. The GEM readout, on the other hand, was found to be virtually free from the E x B effect as had been expected and gave the resolution determined by the transverse diffusion of the drift electrons (diffusion limited). Furthermore, GEMs allow a wider choice of gas mixtures than MWPCs. Among the gases we tried so far a mixture of Ar-CF4-isobutane, in which MWPCs could be prone to discharges, seems promising as the operating gas of the ILC-TPC because of its small diffusion constant especially under a strong magnetic field. We report the measured drift properties of this mixture including the diffusion constant as a function of the electric field and compare them with the predictions of Magboltz. Also presented is the spatial resolution of a GEM-based ILC-TPC estimated from the measurement with the prototype.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of Cu$_2$O

A resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of the semiconductor cuprous oxide, $\rm Cu_2O$, is reported. When the incident x-ray energy is tuned to the Cu K-absorption edge, large enhancements of the spectral features corresponding to the electronic transitions between the valence band and the conduction band are observed. A feature at 6.5 eV can be well described by an interband transition from occupied states of mostly Cu 3d charactor to unoccupied states with mixed 3d, 4s and 2p character. In addition, an insulating band gap is observed, and the momentum dependence of the lower bound is measured along the $Γ-R$ direction. This is found to be in good agreement with the valence band dispersion measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Cooling of a Micro-mechanical Resonator by the Back-action of Lorentz Force

Using a semi-classical approach, we describe an on-chip cooling protocol for a micro-mechanical resonator by employing a superconducting flux qubit. A Lorentz force, generated by the passive back-action of the resonator's displacement, can cool down the thermal motion of the mechanical resonator by applying an appropriate microwave drive to the qubit. We show that this onchip cooling protocol, with well-controlled cooling power and a tunable response time of passive back-action, can be highly efficient. With feasible experimental parameters, the effective mode temperature of a resonator could be cooled down by several orders of magnitude.

Emission of Terahertz Waves from Stacks of Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

By patterning mesoscopic crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) into electromagnetic resonators the oscillations of a large number of intrinsic Josephson junctions can be synchronized into a macroscopic coherent state accompanied by the emission of strong continuous wave THz-radiation. The temperature dependence of the emission is governed by the interplay of self-heating in the resonator and by re-trapping of intrinsic Josephson junctions which can yield a strongly nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the emission power. Furthermore, proper shaping of the resonators yields THzsources with voltage-tunable emission frequencies.

Low-lying non-normal parity states in 8B measured by proton elastic scattering on 7Be

A new measurement of proton resonance scattering on 7Be was performed up to the center-of-mass energy of 6.7 MeV using the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) at the Center for Nuclear Study of the University of Tokyo. The excitation function of 7Be+p elastic scattering above 3.5 MeV was measured successfully for the first time, providing important information about the resonance structure of the 8B nucleus. The resonances are related to the reaction rate of 7Be(p, gamma)8B, which is the key reaction in solar 8B neutrino production. Evidence for the presence of two negative parity states is presented. One of them is a 2- state observed as a broad s-wave resonance, the existence of which had been questionable. Its possible effects on the determination of the astrophysical S-factor of 7Be(p, gamma)8B at solar energy are discussed. The other state had not been observed in previous measurements, and its spin and parity were determined as 1-.

High Field ESR in the Two-Dimensional Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

In this Letter, we report the results of ESR measurements in high magnetic fields up to about 53 T on single crystals of NiGa2S4 to clarify the spin dynamics in more detail. We have found that the dynamics of Z2 vortices affects the temperature dependence of the ESR absorption linewidth and the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields at 1.3 K is well explained by a conventional spin wave theory. These results suggest an occurrence of Z2 vortex-induced topological transition.

Microscopic thickness determination of thin graphite films formed on SiC from quantized oscillation in reflectivity of low-energy electrons

Low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) was used to measure the reflectivity of low-energy electrons from graphitized SiC(0001). The reflectivity shows distinct quantized oscillations as a function of the electron energy and graphite thickness. Conduction bands in thin graphite films form discrete energy levels whose wave vectors are normal to the surface. Resonance of the incident electrons with these quantized conduction band states enhances electrons to transmit through the film into the SiC substrate, resulting in dips in the reflectivity. The dip positions are well explained using tight-binding and first-principles calculations. The graphite thickness distribution can be determined microscopically from LEEM reflectivity measurements.

Electron spin manipulation and resonator readout in a double quantum dot nano-electromechanical system

Magnetically coupling a nano-mechanical resonator to a double quantum dot confining two electrons can enable the manipulation of a single electron spin and the readout of the resonator's natural frequency. When the Larmor frequency matches the resonator frequency, the electron spin in one of the dots can be selectively flipped by the magnetised resonator. By simultaneously measuring the charge state of the two-electron double quantum dots, this transition can be detected thus enabling the natural frequency of the mechanical resonator to be determined.
