Submillimeter Line Emission from LMC N159W: a Dense, Clumpy PDR in a Low Metallicity Environment

Star formation at earlier cosmological times takes place in an interstellar medium with low metallicity. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is ideally suited to study star formation in such an environment. The physical and chemical state of the ISM in a star forming environment can be constrained by observations of submm and FIR spectral lines of the main carbon carrying species, CO, CI and CII, which originate in the surface layers of molecular clouds illuminated by the UV radiation of the newly formed, young stars. We present high-angular resolution sub-millimeter observations in the N159W region in the LMC obtained with the NANTEN2 telescope of the 12CO J = 4-3, J = 7-6, and 13CO J = 4-3 rotational and [CI] 3P1-3P0 and 3P2-3P1 fine-structure transitions. The 13CO J =4-3 and [CI] 3P2-3P1 transitions are detected for the first time in the LMC. We derive the physical and chemical properties of the low-metallicity molecular gas using an escape probability code and a self-consistent solution of the chemistry and thermal balance of the gas in the framework of a clumpy cloud PDR model. The separate excitation analysis of the submm CO lines and the carbon fine structure lines shows that the emitting gas in the N159W region has temperatures of about 80 K and densities of about 10^4 cm^-3. The estimated C to CO abundance ratio close to unity is substantially higher than in dense massive star-forming regions in the Milky Way. The analysis of all observed lines together, including the [CII] line intensity reported in the literature, in the context of a clumpy cloud PDR model constrains the UV intensity to about χ~220 and an average density of the clump ensemble of about 10^5 cm^-3, thus confirming the presence of high density material in the LMC N159W region.

Superconductivity in undoped T'-RE2CuO4 with Tc over 30 K

In this article, we report the superconductivity in T'-RE2CuO4 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd), which have been for a long time believed as a Mott insulator. Our discovery was achieved by using metal-organic decomposition (MOD), an inexpensive and easy-to-implement thin-film process. The keys to prepare the superconducting films are firing with low partial-pressure of oxygen and reduction at low temperatures. The highest Tc of undoped T'-RE2CuO4 is over 30 K, substantially higher than "electron-doped" analogs. Remarkably, Gd2CuO4, even the derivatives of which have not shown superconductivity so far, gets superconducting with Tconset as high as 20 K. The implication of our discovery is briefly discussed.

12CO 4-3 and [CI] 1-0 at the centers of NGC 4945 and Circinus

Studying molecular gas in the central regions of the star burst galaxies NGC4945 and Circinus enables us to characterize the physical conditions and compare them to previous local and high-z studies. We estimate temperature, molecular density and column densities of CO and atomic carbon. Using model predictions we give a range of estimated CO/C abundance ratios. Using the new NANTEN2 4m sub-millimeter telescope in Pampa La Bola, Chile, we observed for the first time CO 4-3 and [CI] 3P1-3 P0 at the centers of both galaxies at linear scale of 682 pc and 732 pc respectively. We compute the cooling curves of 12CO and 13CO using radiative transfer models and estimate the physical conditions of CO and [CI]. The centers of NGC4945 and Circinus are very [CI] bright objects, exhibiting [CI] 3P1 - 3 P0 luminosities of 91 and 67Kkms-1kpc2, respectively. The [CI] 3P1-3 P0/CO 4-3 ratio of integrated intensities are large at 1.2 in NGC4945 and 2.8 in Circinus. Combining previous CO J= 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 and 13CO J= 1-0, 2-1 studies with our new observations, the radiative transfer calculations give a range of densities, n(H2) = 10^3-3*104^cm-3, and a wide range of kinetic temperatures, Tkin = 20 - 100K, depending on the density. Future CO J= 7-6 and [CI] 2-1 observations will be important to resolve the ambiguity in the physical conditions and confirm the model predictions.

Clumpy photon-dominated regions in Carina. I. [CI] and mid-J CO lines in two 4'x4' fields

The Carina region is an excellent astrophysical laboratory for studying the feedback mechanisms of newly born, very massive stars within their natal giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at only 2.35 kpc distance. We use a clumpy PDR model to analyse the observed intensities of atomic carbon and CO and to derive the excitation conditions of the gas. The NANTEN2-4m submillimeter telescope was used to map the [CI] 3P1-3P0, 3P2-3P1 and CO 4-3, 7-6 lines in two 4'x4' regions of Carina where molecular material interfaces with radiation from the massive star clusters. One region is the northern molecular cloud near the compact OB cluster Tr14, and the second region is in the molecular cloud south of etaCar and Tr16. These data were combined with 13CO SEST spectra, HIRES/IRAS 60um and 100um maps of the FIR continuum, and maps of 8um IRAC/Spitzer and MSX emission. We used the HIRES far-infrared dust data to create a map of the FUV field heating the gas. The northern region shows an FUV field of a few 1000 in Draine units while the field of the southern region is about a factor 10 weaker. We constructed models consisting of an ensemble of small spherically symmetric PDR clumps within the 38" beam (0.43pc), which follow canonical power-law mass and mass-size distributions. We find that an average local clump density of 2x10**5 cm-3 is needed to reproduce the observed line emission at two selected interface positions. Stationary, clumpy PDR models reproduce the observed cooling lines of atomic carbon and CO at two positions in the Carina Nebula.

Charge transfer gap for T'-RE2CuO4 and T-La2CuO4 as estimated from Madelung potential calculations

T'-RE2CuO4 (RE: rare-earth element), after appropriate "reduction", has fairly high conductivity and also exhibits clear Fermi edge in photoemission spectroscopy. To clarify the origin of conductivity in the T' mother compounds, we evaluated the unscreened charge-transfer gap for T'-RE2CuO4 and T-La2CuO4. The value of charge-transfer gap for T'-compounds almost linearly decreases with increasing the ionic radius of RE from 12.24 eV for T'-Tm2CuO4 to 9.90 eV for T'-La2CuO4. The results qualitatively explain metallic conductivity in T'-RE2CuO4 for large RE.

Doping of Ce in T-La2CuO4: Rigorous test for electron-hole symmetry for high-Tc superconductivity

We report that Ce doping was achieved in La2CuO4 with the K2NiF4 (T) structure for the first time by molecular beam epitaxy. A synthesis temperature of as low as ~ 630C and an appropriate substrate choice, i.e., (001)LaSrGaO4 (a \~ 3.843 A), enebled us to incorporate Ce into K2NiF4 lattice and to obtain Ce-doped T-La2-xCexCuO4 up to x ~ 0.06. The doping of Ce makes T-La2CuO4 more insulating, which is in sharp contrast to Sr (or Ba) doping in T-La2CuO4, which make the compound metallic and superconducting. The observed smooth increase in resistivity from the hole-doped side (T-La2-xSrxCuO4) to the electron-doped side (T-La2-xCexCuO4) indicates that the electron-hole symmetry is broken in the T-phase materials.

Ce doping in T-La2CuO4 films: Broken electron-hole symmetry for high-Tc superconductivity

We attempted Ce doping in La2CuO4 with the K2NiF4 (T) structure by molecular beam epitaxy. At low growth temperature and with an appropriate substrate choice, we found that Ce can be incorporated into the K2NiF4 lattice up to x ~ 0.06, which had not yet been realized in bulk synthesis. The doping of Ce makes T-La2-xCexCuO4 more insulating, which is in sharp contrast to Ce doping in La2CuO4 with the Nd2CuO4 structure, which makes the compounds superconducting. The observed smooth increase in resistivity from hole-doped side (T-La2-xSrxCuO4) to electron-doped side (T-La2-xCexCuO4) indicates that electron-hole symmetry is broken in the T-phase materials.

Role of impurity oxygen in superconductivity of "non-doped" T'-(La,RE)2CuO4

We have systematically investigated the effect of oxygen nonstoichiometry in a nominally undoped superconductor T'-(La,Y)2CuO4+y. In the experiments, the reduction condition was changed after the sample growth by MBE. The superconductivity is very sensitive to the reduction condition. With systematically increasingly reduced atmospheres, resistivity shows a continuous drop and no discontinuity is observed even until the appearance of superconductivity. The absence of the highly insulating state expected for Mott insulators around y ~ 0 suggests that T'-(La,Y)2CuO4 has intrinsic carriers. The role of residual apical oxygen, which is detrimental to superconductivity, is also discussed based on the resistivity-temperature characteristics in insufficiently reduced samples.

Origin of superconducting carriers in "non-doped" T'- (La,RE)2CuO4 (RE = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Lu, and Y) prepared by molecular beam epitaxy

We have performed a systematic investigation of the variations of the lattice constants with substituent rare-earth element concentration x in the nominally undoped superconductors T'-(La3+)2-x(RE3+)xCuO4 (RE = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Lu, and Y), which we have recently discovered using MBE. The results show both the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice constants (a0 and c0) linearly decrease with x, whose extrapolation to x = 2 agrees well with the reported a0 and c0 values for each T'-RE2CuO4. This behavior is what one would expect simply from the ionic size difference between La3+ and RE3+. The absence of the Cu-O bond stretching due to electron-doping, which is commonly observed in electron-doped T' and infinite-layer superconductors, implies that electron doping via oxygen deficiencies is, at least, not a main source of charge carriers.

New class of T-prime-structure cuprate superconductors

High-temperature superconductivity has been discovered in La2-xBaxCuO4 [1], a compound that derives from the undoped La2CuO4 crystallizing in the perovskite T-structure. In this structure oxygen octahedra surround the copper ions. It is common knowledge that charge carriers induced by doping in such an undoped antiferromagnetic Mott-insulator lead to high-temperature superconductivity [2- 4]. The undoped material La2CuO4 is also the basis of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors [5] of the form La2-xCexCuO4+y [6,7] which however crystallize in the so called T-prime-structure, i.e. without apical oxygen above or below the copper ions of the CuO2-plane. It is well known that for La2-xCexCuO4+y the undoped T-prime-structure parent compound cannot be prepared due to the structural phase transition back into the T-structure occuring around x ~ 0.05. Here, we report that if La is substituted by RE = Y, Lu, Sm, Eu, Gd, or Tb, which have smaller ionic radii but have the same valence as La, nominally undoped La2-xRExCuO4 can be synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy in the T-prime-structure. The second important result is that all these new T-prime-compounds are superconductors with fairly high critical temperatures up to 21 K. For this new class of cuprates La2-xRExCuO4, which forms the T-prime-parent compounds of the La-based electron doped cuprates, we have not been able to obtain the Mott-insulating ground state for small x before the structural phase transition into the T-structure takes place.

Flow characteristics and gelatinization kinetics of rice starch under strong alkali conditions

The normality dependence and the kinetics of flow behavior in the rice starch dispersion under strong alkali conditions were studied. Non-Newtonian flow (power-law) quantities n and μ(σ=μ(\dotε)^n; σ: shear stress, \dotε: shear rate) of the samples stored (gelatinized) at 20^{\circ}C for 10min after the addition of NaOH solution with the normality 0.090 - 0.175N, were measured by a cone-plate type rotational viscometer. For the flow analysis a care was taken for the ambiguity of the analysis range of flow data. The samples added with 0.14 - 0.16N NaOH displayed an apparently dilatant flow. As the normality of added NaOH increased, apparent viscosity η_a was steeply enhanced in the vicinity of 0.14N and started to grow almost exponentially. Next, the storage time dependence of flow properties was investigated for samples gelatinized for 6<t[min]<230 after the addition of 0.146N NaOH solution. A Newtonian analysis of the flow (σ- \dotε) data indicated that viscosity ηincreased exponentially in the early stage (6<t<35) and did linearly in the middle. It was argued that the observed time dependence of viscosity could be described by a first-order reaction hypothesis combined with the fluidity (η^{-1}) mixing rule with respect to ungelatinized and gelatinized fractions of starch. The application of this theoretical treatment to the present data suggested that the gelatinization process was composed of plural phases with different values of a rate constant. For the observed kinetic characteristic of alkali gelatinization, the discussions were presented on the basis of amylose complex formation.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super B factory, an asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider with a design luminosity of 5 x 10^35 cm^-2s^-1, which is around 40 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented. The sensitivity studies are a part of the activities associated with the preparation of a Letter of Intent for SuperKEKB, which has been submitted recently.

New superconduting cuprates with no effective doping: T'-(La3+)2-x(RE3+)xCuO4

We report the synthesis of new superconducting cuprates T'-La2-xRExCuO4 (RE = Sm, Eu, Tb, Lu, and Y) using molecular beam epitaxy. The new superconductors have no effective dopant, at least nominally. The substitution of isovalent RE for La was essentially performed to stabilize the T' phase of La2CuO4 instead of the T phase. The maximum Tconset is ~ 25 K and Tczero is ~ 21 K. The keys to our discovery are (1) the preparation of high-crystalline-quality La-based T' films by low-temperature (~ 650C) thin film processes, and (2) more thorough removal of impurity oxygen at the apical site, which is achieved by the larger in-plane lattice constant (a0) of T'-La2-xRExCuO4 than other T'-Ln2CuO4 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the aid of large surface-to-volume ratio of thin films.

Synthesis and photoemission study of as-grown superconducting MgB2 thin films

As-grown superconducting thin films of MgB2 were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and studied by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS). Only films prepared at temperatures between 150 and 320 deg. showed superconductivity. A best TC onset of 36 K with a sharp transition width of -1 K was obtained although the film crystallinity was poor. The in-situ photoelectron spectra obtained on the surfaces of the MBE grown MgB2 films were free from dirt peaks. XPS revealed that the binding energy of the Mg 2p levels in MgB2 is close to that of metallic Mg, and the binding energy of B 1s is close to that of transition-metal diborides. The valence UP spectra showed a clear Fermi edge although the density of states (DOS) at EF is low and the major components of the valence band are located between 5 and 11 eV.

Report of Snowmass 2001 Working Group E2 : Electron-positron Colliders from the $ϕ$ to the Z

We report on the status and plans of experiments now running or proposed for electron-positron colliders at energies between the $ϕ$ and the Z. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ B and charm factories we considered were PEP-II/BABAR, KEKB/Belle, superKEK, SuperBABAR, and CESR-c/CLEO-c. We reviewed the programs at the $ϕ$ factory at Frascati and the proposed PEP-N facility at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We studied the prospects for B physics with a dedicated linear collider Z factory, associated with the TESLA high energy linear collider. In all cases, we compared the physics reach of these facilities with that of alternative experiments at hadron colliders or fixed target facilities.

Time-dependent angular analyses of B decays

When both B0 and B0bar can decay to the same final state composed of two vectors, the interference between them and those among three polarization states result in intricate phenomena. In this note we derive the time and angular distributions for general B to Va Vb processes in a form convenient for actual analyses. We then apply them to specific examples and clarify the CP violating parameters obtainable in the D* rho and J/ψK* final states. The time distributions for the D*pi final states are also discussed.
