Origin of Tc Enhancement Induced by Doping Yttrium and Hydrogen into LaFeAsO-based Superconductors: 57Fe, 75As, 139La, and 1H-NMR Studies

We report our extensive 57Fe-, 75As-, 139La-, and 1H-NMR studies of La_{0.8}Y_{0.2}FeAsO_{1-y} (La_{0.8}Y_{0.2}1111) and LaFeAsO_{1-y}H_{x}(La1111H), where doping yttrium (Y) and hydrogen (H) into optimally doped LaFeAsO_{1-y} (La1111(OPT)) increases T_c=28 K to 34 and 32 K, respectively. In the superconducting (SC) state, the measurements of nuclear-spin lattice-relaxation rate 1/T_1 have revealed in terms of a multiple fully gapped s_\pm-wave model that the SC gap and T_c in La_{0.8}Y_{0.2}1111 become larger than those in La1111(OPT) without any change in doping level. In La1111H, the SC gap and T_c also increase slightly even though a decrease in carrier density and some disorders are significantly introduced. As a consequence, we suggest that the optimization of both the structural parameters and the carrier doping level to fill up the bands is crucial for increasing T_c among these La1111-based compounds through the optimization of the Fermi surface topology.

Possible hydrogen doping and enhancement of Tc (= 35 K) in a LaFeAsO-based superconductor

We report that the incorporation of hydroxide ions (OH)- significantly enhances the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in the LnFeAsO-based superconductors (Ln1111: Ln = La, Ce and Pr). For La1111, Tc of the (OH)- incorporated sample synthesized using high-pressure technique becomes 35 K, which is higher by 7 K than the typical optimally-doped La1111 superconductors. Similar enhancement in Tc is also observed for Ce1111 and Pr1111. 1H-NMR measurement have confirmed the existence of hydrogen atoms in the samples. Accompanying the (OH)- incorporation, the lattice parameters are largely contracted, down to the values which have never been attained by any other dopings/substitutions.

Frustration-induced valence bond crystal and its melting in Mo3Sb7

121/123Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance and muon spin relaxation experiments of Mo3Sb7 revealed symmetry breakdown to a nonmagnetic state below the transition recently found at TS=50 K. The transition is characterized by a distinct lattice dynamics suggested from narrowing of nuclear fields. We point out that the Mo sublatice is a unique three-dimensional frustrated lattice where nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions compete, and propose that tetragonal distortion to release the frustration stabilizes long-range order of spin-singlet dimers, i.e., valence bond crystal, which is thermally excited to the dynamic state with cubic symmetry.

In-Medium rho^0 Spectral Function Study via the 2H, 3He, 12C(gamma,pi+pi-) Reaction

We report a helicity analysis of sub-threshold rho^0 production on 2H, 3He and 12C at low photo-production energies. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho^0 polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip production mechanism. This signature is used to extract in-medium rho^0_L invariant mass distributions for all three nuclei in a manner which is less model-dependent than previous measurements. The results are compared to kinematic and phenomenological models of the rho^0 spectral function. The 2H and 3He data distributions support the role of N*(1520) excitation in shaping the in-medium rho^0_L invariant mass distribution, while the 12C distributions are consistent with quasi-free rho^0_L production. The data support an in-medium modification of the rho^0_L invariant mass distribution.

Helicity Signatures in Subthreshold rho Production on Nuclei

We report a helicity analysis of subthreshold rho production on 2H and 12C nuclei at low photoproduction energies and large |t|. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip mechanism of rho production. The analysis is model-independent and supports the large mass shift reported from the earlier 3He experiments.

Probing the DeltaNN component of 3He

The 3He(gamma,pi^+/- p) reactions were measured simultaneously over a tagged photon energy range of 800<E_gamma<1120 MeV, well above the Delta resonance region. An analysis was performed to kinematically isolate Delta knockout events from conventional Delta photoproduction events, and a statistically significant excess of pi+p events was identified, consistent with Delta++ knockout. Two methods were used to estimate the DeltaNN probability in the 3He ground state, corresponding to the observed knockout cross section. The first gave a lower probability limit of 1.5+/-0.6+/-0.5%; the second yielded an upper limit of about 2.6%.

Subthreshold rho^0 photoproduction on 3He

A large reduction of the rho^0 mass in the nuclear medium is reported, inferred from dipion photoproduction spectra in the 1 GeV region, for the reaction 3He(gamma,pi+ pi-)X with a 10% duty factor tagged-photon beam and the TAGX multi-particle spectrometer. The energy range covered (800 < E(gamma) < 1120 MeV) lies mostly below the free rho^0 production threshold, a region which is believed sensitive to modifications of light vector-meson properties at nuclear-matter densities. The rho^0 masses extracted from the MC fitting of the data, m*(rho^0) = 642 +/- 40, 669 +/- 32, and 682 +/- 56 MeV/c^2 for E(gamma) in the 800-880, 880-960, and 960-1040 MeV regions respectively, are independently corroborated by a measured, assumption-free, kinematical observable. This mass shift, far exceeding current mean-field driven theoretical predictions, may be suggestive of rho^0 decay within the range of the nucleonic field.
