Collapse of the $N=28$ shell closure in the newly discovered $^{39}$Na and the development of deformed halos towards the neutron dripline

Halos and changes of nuclear magicities have been extensively investigated in exotic nuclei during past decades. The newly discovered $^{39}$Na with the neutron number $N=28$ provides a new platform to explore such novel phenomena near the neutron dripline of the sodium isotopic chain. We study the shell property and the possible halo structure in $^{39}$Na within the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum. It is found that the lowering of $2p$ orbitals in the spherical limit results in the collapse of the $N=28$ shell closure in $^{39}$Na, and a well deformed ground state is established. The pairing correlations and the mixing of $pf$ components driven by deformation lead to the occupation of weakly bound or continuum $p$-wave neutron orbitals. An oblate halo is therefore formed around the prolate core in $^{39,41}$Na, making $^{39}$Na a single nucleus with the coexistence of several exotic structures, including the quenched $N=28$ shell closure, Borromean structure, deformed halo, and shape decoupling. The microscopic mechanisms behind the shape decoupling phenomenon and the development of halos towards dripline are revealed.

Tunable Magnetic Properties in Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$ Double-Perovskite

Double-perovskite oxides have attracted recent attention due to their attractive functionalities and application potential. In this paper, we demonstrate the effect of dual controls, i.e., the deposition pressure of oxygen (P$_O2$) and lattice mismatch ($ε$), on tuning magnetic properties in epitaxial double-perovskite Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$ films. In a nearly-lattice-matched Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$/SrTiO$_3$ film, the ferrimagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition occurs when P$_O2$ is reduced to 30 mTorr, probably due to the formation of Re$^{4+}$ ions that replace the stoichiometric Re$^{5+}$ to cause disorders of $B$-site ions. On the other hand, a large compressive strain or tensile strain shifts this critical P$_O2$ to below 1 mTorr or above 40 mTorr, respectively. The observations could be attributed to the modulation of $B$-site ordering by epitaxial strain through affecting elemental valence. Our results provide a feasible way to expand the functional tunability of magnetic double-perovskite oxides that hold great promise for spintronic devices.

High-quality NiFe thin films on oxide/non-oxide platforms via pulsed laser deposition at room temperature

Soft ferromagnetic NiFe thin films are promising for applications in spintronic devices because of their constituent electrical and magnetic properties. Electron beam evaporation and sputtering techniques have been used to deposit NiFe thin films. For in-situ stacking of NiFe with functional complex oxides, the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is highly desirable. However, the growth of high-quality NiFe (and non-oxide thin films in general) by PLD remains a formidable task. Here, we report high-quality NiFe thin films of various thicknesses on oxide/non-oxide substrates with desirable magnetic properties by PLD at room temperature. The magnetic properties are found to be strongly dependent on the laser fluence of the deposition process. The laser fluence of 4 Joule/cm$^2$ produces the highest magnetization of ~547 emu/cc. The small coercivity (few Oersted) and sharp ferromagnetic switching behaviour indicate uniaxial anisotropy with an easy axis along the in-plane direction. In addition, thickness-dependent magnetodynamics characterizations are studied via ferromagnetic resonance. Our findings indicate the ferromagnetic characteristics are sensitive to the quality of the oxide/non-oxide substrate surface. These results offer significant insight into the PLD-based development of thin metal magnetic films.

New continuum and polarization observations of the Cygnus Loop with FAST II. Images and analyses

We present total-intensity and polarized-intensity images of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) observed by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The high angular-resolution and high-sensitivity images enable us to thoroughly compare the properties of the northern part with the southern part of the SNR. The central filament in the northern part and the southern part have a similar foreground rotation measure, meaning their distances are likely similar. The polarization analysis indicates that the random magnetic field is larger than the regular field in the northern part, but negligible in the southern part. The total-intensity image is decomposed into components of various angular scales, and the brightness-temperature spectral index of the shell structures in the northern part is similar to that in the southern part in the component images. All these evidence suggest that the northern and southern part of the Cygnus Loop are situated and thus evolved in different environments of interstellar medium, while belonging to the same SNR.

Ionic modulation at the LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ interface for extreme high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas

Due to the coexistence of many emergent phenomena, including 2D superconductivity and a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling, 5d transition metal oxides based two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) have been prospected as one of the potential intrants for modern electronics. However, despite the lighter electron mass, the mobility of carriers, a key requisite for high-performance devices, in 5d-oxides devices remains far behind their 3d-oxides analogs. The carriers mobility in these oxides is significantly hampered by the inevitable presence of defects generated during the growth process. Here, we report very high mobility ($\sim$ 22650 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$) of 5d-2DES confined at the LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ interface. The high mobility, which is beyond the values observed in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ systems in the same carrier-density range, is achieved using the ionic-liquid gating at room temperature. We postulate that the ionic-liquid gating affects the oxygen vacancies and efficiently reduces any disorder at the interface. Investigating density and mobility in a broad range of back-gate voltage, we reveal that the mobility follows the power-law $μ\propto n^{1.2}$, indicating the very high quality of ionic-liquid-gated LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ devices, consistent with our postulate. Further, the analysis of the quantum oscillations measured in high magnetic fields confirms that the high-mobility electrons occupy the electronic sub-bands emerging from the Ta:5d orbitals of KTaO$_3$.

Searching for Exotic Spin-Dependent Interactions Using Rotationally Modulated Source Masses and an Atomic Magnetometer Array

We describe a proposed experimental search for exotic spin-dependent interactions using rotationally modulated source masses and an atomic magnetometer array. Rather than further improving the magnetometer sensitivity, noise reduction can be another way to reach higher measurement precision. In this work, we propose to use modulating techniques of the source masses to reduce the noise of the experiment. Better precision can be achieved if the fundamental frequency and harmonics of the rotating source masses are used to detect the new interactions. Furthermore, if an array of magnetometers are applied, the statistic precision can be improved, and some common noises can be canceled. Our analysis and simulations indicate that the proposed experiment scheme can improve the detection precisions of three types of spin-dependent interactions by as much as $\sim$5 orders in the force range of $\sim$cm to $\sim$10m.

QED with massive photons for precision physics: zero modes and first result for the hadron spectrum

The current precision reached by lattice QCD calculations of low-energy hadronic observables, requires not only the introduction of electromagnetic corrections, but also control over all the potential systematic uncertainties introduced by the lattice version of QED. Introducing a massive photon as an infrared regulator in lattice QED, provides a well defined theory, dubbed QEDM, amenable to numerical evaluation [arXiv:1507.08916]. The photon mass is removed through extrapolation. In this contribution we scrutinise aspects of QEDM such as the presence and fate of the zero modes contributions and we describe the determination of the photon mass corrections in finite and infinite volume. We demonstrate that the required extrapolations are well controlled using numerical data obtained on two ensembles which only differ in volume.

New Experimental Limits on Exotic Spin- and Velocity-dependent Interactions Using Rotationally Modulated Source-masses and an Atomic-magnetometer Array

We conducted laboratory searching for the exotic spin- and velocity-dependent new interactions according to the previously proposed experimental scheme. Two $\sim$6Kg heavy source masses are rotationally modulated at a frequency of 20Hz. Four identical atomic magnetometers are used in an array form to increase the statistics and cancel the common-mode noise. Data processing method based on high precision numerical integration is applied for the four harmonic frequencies of the signal. The rotation direction of the source masses was reversed to flip the signal. Thus the [1,-3,3,-1] weighting method can be applied to remove possible slow drifting further. The experiment method has noise reduction features, and new constraints for Vector-Axial and Axial-Axial were obtained. The new constraints on VA improved by as much as more than four orders, on AA by as much as two orders in the corresponding force range, respectively.

A Complete 16 micron-Selected Galaxy Sample at $z\sim1$: Mid-infrared Spectral Energy Distributions

We describe a complete, flux-density-limited sample of galaxies at redshift $0.8 < z < 1.3$ selected at 16 micron. At the selection wavelength near 8 micron rest, the observed emission comes both from dust heated by intense star formation and from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sample galaxies to local-galaxy templates reveals that more than half the galaxies have SEDs dominated by star formation. About one sixth of the galaxy SEDs are dominated by an AGN, and nearly all the rest of the SEDs are composite. Comparison with X-ray and far-infrared observations shows that combinations of luminosities at rest-frame 4.5 and 8 micron give good measures of both AGN luminosity and star-formation rate. The sample galaxies mostly follow the established star-forming main sequence for $z=1$ galaxies, but of the galaxies more than 0.5 dex above that main sequence, more than half have AGN-type SEDs. Similarly, the most luminous AGNs tend to have higher star-formation rates than the main sequence value. Galaxies with stellar masses $>$10$^{11}$\,\Msun\ are unlikely to host an AGN. About 1% of the sample galaxies show an SED with dust emission typical of neither star formation nor an AGN.

Tunable coupler for realizing a controlled-phase gate with dynamically decoupled regime in a superconducting circuit

Controllable interaction between superconducting qubits is desirable for large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Here, based on a theoretical proposal by Yan et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 10, 054061 (2018)] we experimentally demonstrate a simply-designed and flux-controlled tunable coupler with a continuous tunability by adjusting the coupler frequency, which can completely turn off adjacent superconducting qubit coupling. Utilizing the tunable interaction between two qubits via the coupler, we implement a different type of controlled-phase (CZ) gate with 'dynamically decoupled regime', which allows the qubit-qubit coupling to be only 'on' at the usual operating point while dynamically 'off' during the tuning process of one qubit frequency into and out of the operating point. This scheme not only efficiently suppresses the leakage out of the computational subspace, but also allows for the acquired two-qubit phase being geometric at the operating point. We achieve an average CZ gate fidelity of 98.3(0.6), which is dominantly limited by qubit decoherence. The demonstrated tunable coupler provides a desirable tool to suppress adjacent qubit coupling and is suitable for large scale quantum computation and simulation.

Thermostatistics of a q-deformed Relativistic Ideal Fermi Gas

In this paper, we formulate a q-deformed many-body theory for the relativistic Fermi gas and discuss the effects of the deformation parameter q on physical properties of such systems. Since antiparticle excitations appear in the relativistic regime, a suitable treatment to the choice of deformation parameters for both fermions and antifermions must be carefully taken in order to get a consistent theory. By applying this formulation, we further study the thermostatistic properties of a q-deformed ideal relativistic Fermi gas. It can be shown that even in the noninteracting scenario, the system exhibits interesting characteristics which are significantly different from ordinary Fermi gases. Explicitly, antiparticles may become dominant due to the shift of chemical potential by the deformation parameter q. This may build a solid foundation for the further studies of q-deformed relativistic interacting systems.

Efficient quantum memory for single photon polarization qubits

A quantum memory, for storing and retrieving flying photonic quantum states, is a key interface for realizing long-distance quantum communication and large-scale quantum computation. While many experimental schemes of high storage-retrieval efficiency have been performed with weak coherent light pulses, all quantum memories for true single photons achieved so far have efficiencies far below 50%, a threshold value for practical applications. Here, we report the demonstration of a quantum memory for single-photon polarization qubits with an efficiency of >85% and a fidelity of >99 %, basing on balanced two-channel electromagnetically induced transparency in laser-cooled rubidium atoms. For the single-channel quantum memory, the optimized efficiency for storing and retrieving single-photon temporal waveforms can be as high as 90.6 %. Our result pushes the photonic quantum memory closer to its practical applications in quantum information processing.

Final results for the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$ from the UCNA experiment

The UCNA experiment was designed to measure the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$ using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN produced via downscattering in solid deuterium were polarized via transport through a 7 T magnetic field, and then directed to a 1 T solenoidal electron spectrometer, where the decay electrons were detected in electron detector packages located on the two ends of the spectrometer. A value for $A_0$ was then extracted from the asymmetry in the numbers of counts in the two detector packages. We summarize all of the results from the UCNA experiment, obtained during run periods in 2007, 2008--2009, 2010, and 2011--2013, which ultimately culminated in a 0.67\% precision result for $A_0$.

An Ultra Deep Field survey with WFIRST

Studying the formation and evolution of galaxies at the earliest cosmic times, and their role in reionization, requires the deepest imaging possible. Ultra-deep surveys like the HUDF and HFF have pushed to mag \mAB$\,\sim\,$30, revealing galaxies at the faint end of the LF to $z$$\,\sim\,$9$\,-\,$11 and constraining their role in reionization. However, a key limitation of these fields is their size, only a few arcminutes (less than a Mpc at these redshifts), too small to probe large-scale environments or clustering properties of these galaxies, crucial for advancing our understanding of reionization. Achieving HUDF-quality depth over areas $\sim$100 times larger becomes possible with a mission like the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a 2.4-m telescope with similar optical properties to HST, with a field of view of $\sim$1000 arcmin$^2$, $\sim$100$\times$ the area of the HST/ACS HUDF. This whitepaper motivates an Ultra-Deep Field survey with WFIRST, covering $\sim$100$\,-\,$300$\times$ the area of the HUDF, or up to $\sim$1 deg$^2$, to \mAB$\,\sim\,$30, potentially revealing thousands of galaxies and AGN at the faint end of the LF, at or beyond $z$\,$\sim$\,9$\,-\,$10 in the epoch of reionization, and tracing their LSS environments, dramatically increasing the discovery potential at these redshifts. (Note: This paper is a somewhat expanded version of one that was submitted as input to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey, with this version including an Appendix (which exceeded the Astro2020 page limits), describing how the science drivers for a WFIRST Ultra Deep Field might map into a notional observing program, including the filters used and exposure times needed to achieve these depths.)

On the observability of individual Population III stars and their stellar-mass black hole accretion disks through cluster caustic transits

Recent near-IR power-spectra and panchromatic Extragalactic Background Light measurements provide upper limits on the near-IR surface brightness (SB>31 mag/arcsec^2) that may come from Pop III stars and accretion disks around resulting stellar-mass black holes (BHs) in the epoch of First Light (z=7-17). Physical parameters for zero metallicity Pop III stars at z>7 can be estimated from MESA stellar evolution models through helium-depletion, and for BH accretion disks from quasar microlensing results and multicolor accretion models. Second-generation stars can form at higher multiplicity, so that BH accretion disks may be fed by Roche-lobe overflow from lower-mass companions in their AGB stage. The near-IR SB constraints can be used to calculate the number of caustic transits behind lensing clusters that JWST and the 25~39 m ground-based telescopes may detect for both Pop III stars and stellar mass BH accretion disks. Because Pop III stars and stellar mass BH accretion disks have sizes of a few x 10^-11 arcsec at z>7, typical caustic magnifications can be mu=10^4~10^5, with rise times of hours and decline times of < 1 year for cluster transverse velocities of v<1000 km/s. Microlensing by intracluster medium objects can modify transit magnifications, and lengthen visibility times. Depending on BH masses, accretion-disk radii and feeding efficiencies, stellar-mass BH accretion-disk caustic transits could outnumber those from Pop III stars. To observe Pop III caustic transits directly may require monitoring 3~30 lensing clusters to AB< 29 mag over a decade or more. Such a program must be started with JWST in Cycle 1, and -- depending on the role of microlensing in the Intra Cluster Light -- should be continued for decades with the GMT and TMT, where JWST and the ground-based telescopes each will play a unique and strongly complementary role.

Constraining New Muonic Interactions Meditated by Axion-Like-Particles

ALPs (Axion Like Particle) beyond the standard model are solutions to several important problems of modern physics. One way to detect these particles is to detect the new interactions they meditate. Many experiments have been performed to search for these new interactions in ranges from $\simμ$m to astrophysical range. At present, nearly all known experiments searching for the ALP-meditated long range new interactions use sources or probes containing protons, neutrons and electrons. Constraints for other fermions such as muons are scarce, though muons might be the most suspicious particles which could take part in new interactions, considering their involvement of several well known puzzles of modern physics. In this work, we discuss the possibility of explaining the anomalous magnetic moment of muons by the long range muonic new interactions mediated by ALPs. We also give a constraint for the scalar-pseudo-scalar(SP) type interaction meditated by muonic ALPs. We propose to further search the muonic SP type interaction by muon spin rotation experiments.

Electric-Field Control of Magnetic Order: From FeRh to Topological Antiferromagnetic Spintronics

Using an electric field instead of an electric current (or a magnetic field) to tailor the electronic properties of magnetic materials is promising for realizing ultralow energy-consuming memory devices because of the suppression of Joule heating, especially when the devices are scaled to the nanoscale. In the review, we summarize recent results on the giant magnetization and resistivity modulation in a metamagnetic intermetallic alloy - FeRh, which is achieved by electric-field-controlled magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic heterostructures. Furthermore, the approach is extended to topological antiferromagnetic spintronics, which is currently receiving attention in the magnetic society, and the antiferromagnetic order parameter has been able to switch back and forth by a small electric field. In the end, we envision the possibility of manipulating exotic physical phenomena in the emerging topological antiferromagnetic spintronics field via the electric-field approach.

A VLT/FORS2 view at $z\sim6$: Lyman-$α$ emitter fraction and galaxy physical properties at the edge of the epoch of cosmic reionization

The fraction of Lyman-$α$ emitters among the galaxy population has been found to increase from $z\sim0$ to $z\sim6$ and drop dramatically at $z>6$. This drop has been interpreted as an effect of an increasingly neutral intergalactic medium with increasing redshift, while a LyC escape fraction evolving with redshift. We report the result of a large VLT/FORS2 program aiming to confirm spectroscopically a large galaxy sample at $z\geq6$ that has been selected in several independent fields through the Lyman Break technique. Combining those data with archival data, we create a large and homogeneous sample of $z\sim6$ galaxies ($N=127$), complete in terms of Ly$α$ detection at $>95\%$ for EW(Ly$α)\geq25Å$. We use this sample to derive a new measurement of the LAE fraction at $z\sim6$ and derive the physical properties of these galaxies through spectral energy distribution fitting. We find a median LAE fraction at $z\sim6$ lower than in previous studies. The main difference between LAEs and non-LAEs is that the latter are significantly dustier. Using predictions of our SED fitting code accounting for nebular emission, we find an effective Ly$α$ escape fraction $f^{eff}_{esc}(Lyα)=0.23^{+0.36}_{-0.17}$ remarkably consistent with the value derived by comparing UV luminosity function with Ly$α$ luminosity function. We conclude that the drop in the LAE fraction from $z\sim6$ to $z>6$ is less dramatic than previously found and the effect of an increasing IGM neutral fraction is possibly observed at $5<z<6$. Based on our derived $f^{eff}_{esc}(Lyα)$, we find that the IGM has a relatively small impact on Ly$α$ photon visibility at $z\sim6$, with a lower limit for the IGM transmission to \lya\ photons, $T_{IGM}\gtrsim0.20$, likely due to the presence of outflows.
