Experimental nuclear quadrupole resonance and computational study of the structurally refined topological semimetal TaSb$_2$

The local electric field gradients and magnetic dynamics of TaSb$_2$ have been studied using $^{121}$Sb, $^{123}$Sb, and $^{181}$Ta nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations using XRD-determined crystal structures. By measuring all structurally expected thirteen NQR lines, the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant ($ν_Q$) and asymmetric parameter ($η$) for Ta, Sb(1), and Sb(2) sites were obtained. These values are all in good agreement with the presented DFT calculations. Principal axes of the electric field gradients was determined for a single-crystal sample by measuring the angular dependencies of NMR frequency under a weak magnetic field. The unusual temperature dependence of $η$(T) of Sb(2) hints at the suppressed thermal expansion along the $a$-axis. Spin lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1T$) measurements reveal an activated-type behavior and an upturn below 30 K. Neither the low temperature upturn nor the high temperature activation type behaviors are reproduced by the calculated $1/T_1T$ based on the calculated density of states (DOS). On the other hand, the agreement between the calculated DOS and specific heat measurements indicates that the band renormalization is small. This fact indicates that TaSb$_2$ deviates from the simple semimetal scenario, and magnetic excitations are not captured by Fermi liquid theory.

Structural 130-K Phase Transition and Emergence of a Two-Ion Kondo State in HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga Explored by $^{69,71}$Ga Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We have studied the microscopic magnetic properties, the nature of the 130-K phase transition, and the ground state in the recently synthesized compound Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga by use of $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra clearly show an unusual phase transition at $T_t$ $\sim$ 130 K yielding a splitting of the high-temperature single NQR line into two clearly resolved NQR lines, providing evidence for two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites. The NQR frequencies are in good agreement with fully-relativistic calculations of the band structure. Our NQR results indicate the absence of magnetic or charge order down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/$T_1$, shows three distinct regimes, with onset temperatures at $T_t$ and 2 K. The temperature-independent 1/$T_1$, observed between $T_t$ and 2 K, crosses over to a Korringa process, 1/$T_1$ $\propto$ $T$, below $\sim$ 2 K, which evidences a rare two-ion Kondo scenario: the system goes into a dense Kondo coherent state at 2.0 and 0.8 K for the two different Ga sites.

The planar triangular $S=3/2$ magnet AgCrSe$_2$: magnetic frustration, short range correlations, and field tuned anisotropic cycloidal magnetic order

Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of $H_{\perp S} = 23.7$~T at 2~K with a magnetization of $M_s = 2.8$~$μ_{\rm B}{\rm /Cr}$. For $H \parallel c$, $M(H)$ monotonously increases and saturates at the same $M_s$ value at $H_{\parallel S} = 25.1$~T at 4.2~K. Above $T_N $, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about $T^* = 45$~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group $R3m$. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe$_{2}$, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic $H-T$ phase diagram in detail.

Anisotropic field-induced ordering in the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid NaYbSe$_2$

High-quality single crystals of NaYbSe$_2$, which resembles a perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet without the intrinsic disorder, are investigated by magnetization and specific heat, as well as the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The low-field measurements confirm the absence of any spin freezing or long-range magnetic order down to 50~mK, which suggests a quantum spin liquid ground (QSL) state with gapless excitations. The instability of the QSL state is observed upon applying magnetic fields. For the $H\bot c$ direction, a field-induced magnetic phase transition is observed above 2~T from the $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data, agreeing with a clear $\frac{M_s}{3}$ plateau of $M(H)$, which is associated with an up-up-down (uud) spin arrangement. For the $H\|c$ direction, a field-induced transition could be evidenced at a much higher field range (9 - 21~T). The $^{23}$Na NMR measurements provide microscopic evidence for field-induced ordering for both directions. A reentrant behavior of $T_{\rm N}$, originating from the thermal and quantum spin fluctuations, is observed for both directions. The anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\perp}\simeq$ 4.7~K and $J_z\simeq$2.33~K are extracted from the modified bond-dependent XXZ model for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. The absence of magnetic long-range order at zero fields is assigned to the effect of strong bond-frustration, arising from the complex spin-orbit entangled $4f$ ground state. Finally, we derive the highly anisotropic magnetic phase diagram, which is discussed in comparison with the existing theoretical models for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets.

Competing magnetic correlations across the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in the Kondo system CeTi$_{1-x}$V$_x$Ge$_3$: $^{51}$V NMR as a local probe

$^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetization studies on CeTi$_{1-x}$V$_x$Ge$_3$ have been performed to explore the evolution from the ferromagnetic ($x = 0.113$) to the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice state ($x = 1$), with focus on the emergence of a possible ferromagnetic quantum critical point (FMQCP) at $x_c \approx 0.4$. From the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$, and the Knight shift, \textit{K}, for $x=0.113$ and $x=1$ a considerable competition between ferro- and antiferromagnetic correlations is found. Around the critical concentration ($x = 0.35, 0.405$) quantum-critical spin fluctuations entail weak antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations admixed with ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The FMQCP in CeTi$_{1-x}$V$_x$Ge$_3$ therefore is not purely ferromagnetic in nature.

Field-induced instability of the quantum-spin-liquid ground state in the $J_{\rm eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound NaYbO$_2$

Polycrystalline samples of NaYbO$_2$ are investigated by bulk magnetization and specific-heat measurements, as well as by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) as local probes. No signatures of long-range magnetic order are found down to 0.3~K, evidencing a highly frustrated spin-liquid-like ground state in zero field. Above 2\,T, signatures of magnetic order are observed in thermodynamic measurements, suggesting the possibility of a field-induced quantum phase transition. The $^{23}$Na NMR relaxation rates reveal the absence of magnetic order and persistent fluctuations down to 0.3~K at very low fields and confirm the bulk magnetic order above 2~T. The $H$-$T$ phase diagram is obtained and discussed along with the existing theoretical concepts for layered spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets

51V-NMR study on the S=1/2 square lattice antiferromagnet K2V3O8

Static and dynamic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet K$_2$V$_3$O$_8$ have been investigated by $^{51}$V-NMR experiments on nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ sites. Above the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm{S}}$ = 115 K, NMR spectra are fully compatible with the $P4bm$ space group symmetry. The formation of superstructure below $T_{\rm{S}}$ causes splitting of the NMR lines, which get broadened at lower temperatures so that individual peaks are not well resolved. Evolution of NMR spectra with magnetic field along $c$-axis below the magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm{N}} \sim 4$ K is qualitatively consistent with a simple Néel order and a spin flop transition. However, broad feature of the spectra does not rule out possible incommensurate spin structure. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ below $T_{\rm{N}}$ shows huge enhancement for a certain range of magnetic field, which is independent of temperature and attributed to cross relaxation due to anomalously large nuclear spin-spin coupling between V$^{5+}$ and magnetic V$^{4+}$ sites. The results indicate strong gapless spin fluctuations, which could arise from incommesurate orders or complex spin textures.

Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time in TaP and the Knight shift of Weyl semimetals

We first analyze the recent experimental data on the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate of the Weyl semimetal TaP. We argue that its non-monotonic temperature dependence is explained by the temperature dependent chemical potential of Weyl fermions. We also develop the theory of the Knight shift in Weyl semimetals, which contains two counteracting terms. The diamagnetic term follows $-\ln[W/\max(|μ|,k_BT)]$ with $W$, $μ$ and $T$ being the high energy cutoff, chemical potential and temperature, respectively, and is always negative. The paramagnetic term scales with $μ$ and changes sign depending on the doping level. Altogether, the Knight shift is predicted to vanish or even change sign upon changing the doping or the temperature, making it a sensitive tool to identify Weyl points. We also calculate the Korringa relation for Weyl semimetals which shows an unusual energy dependence rather than being constant as expected for a non-interacting Fermi system.

${}^{239}$Pu nuclear magnetic resonance in the candidate topological insulator PuB$_4$

We present a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of ${}^{239}$Pu in bulk and powdered single-crystal plutonium tetraboride (PuB$_4$), which has recently been investigated as a potential correlated topological insulator. This study constitutes the second-ever observation of the ${}^{239}$Pu NMR signal, and provides unique on-site sensitivity to the rich $f$-electron physics and insight into the bulk gap-like behavior in PuB$_4$. The ${}^{239}$Pu NMR spectra are consistent with axial symmetry of the shift tensor showing for the first time that ${}^{239}$Pu NMR can be observed in an anisotropic environment and up to room temperature. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{239}$Pu shift, combined with a relatively long spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$), indicate that PuB$_4$ adopts a non-magnetic state with gap-like behavior consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The temperature dependencies of the NMR Knight shift and $T_1^{-1}$--microscopic quantities sensitive only to bulk states--imply bulk gap-like behavior confirming that PuB$_4$ is a good candidate topological insulator. The large contrast between the ${}^{239}$Pu orbital shifts in the ionic insulator PuO$_2$ ($\sim$~+24.7~\%) and PuB$_4$ ($\sim$~-0.5~\%) provides a new tool to investigate the nature of chemical bonding in plutonium materials.

NaYbS$_2$ - a new planar spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice magnet and putative spin liquid

Platelike high-quality NaYbS$_{2}$ rhombohedral single crystals with lateral dimensions of a few mm have been grown and investigated in great detail by bulk methods like magnetization and specific heat, but also by local probes like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron-spin resonance (ESR), muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) over a wide field and temperature range. Our single-crystal studies clearly evidence a strongly anisotropic quasi-2D magnetism and an emerging spin-orbit entangled $S=1/2$ state of Yb towards low temperatures together with an absence of long-range magnetic order down to 260~mK. In particular, the clear and narrow Yb ESR lines together with narrow $^{23}$Na NMR lines evidence an absence of inherent structural distortions in the system, which is in strong contrast to the related spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_{4}$ falling within the same space group $R\overline{3}m$. This identifies NaYbS$_{2}$ as a rather pure spin-1/2 triangular lattice magnet and a new putative quantum spin liquid.

Emergent Weyl fermion excitations in TaP explored by 181-Ta quadrupole resonance

The $^{181}$Ta quadrupole resonance (NQR) technique has been utilized to investigate the microscopic magnetic properties of the Weyl semi-metal TaP. We found three zero-field NQR signals associated with the transition between the quadrupole split levels for Ta with $I$=7/2 nuclear spin. A quadrupole coupling constant, $ν_{\mathrm{Q}}$ =19.250 MHz, and an asymmetric parameter of the electric field gradient, $η$ = 0.423 were extracted, in good agreement with band structure calculations. In order to examine the magnetic excitations, the temperature dependence of the spin lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$) has been measured for the $f_{\mathrm{2}}$-line ($\pm$5/2 $\leftrightarrow$ $\pm$3/2 transition). We found that there exists two regimes with quite different relaxation processes. Above $T\text{*}$ $\approx$ 30 K, a pronounced (1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$) $\propto$ $T^{2}$ behavior was found, which is attributed to the magnetic excitations at the Weyl nodes with temperature dependent orbital hyperfine coupling. Below $T\text{*}$, the relaxation is mainly governed by Korringa process with 1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$ = constant, accompanied by an additional $T^{-1/2}$ type dependence to fit our experimental data. We show that Ta-NQR is a novel probe for the bulk Weyl fermions and their excitations.

Extended Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Study of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor PuCoGa$_5$

PuCoGa$_5$ has emerged as a prototypical heavy-fermion superconductor, with its transition temperature ($T_c\simeq18.5$ K) being the highest amongst such materials. Nonetheless, a clear description as to what drives the superconducting pairing is still lacking, rendered complicated by the notoriously intricate nature of plutonium's 5$f$ valence electrons. Here, we present a detailed $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) study of PuCoGa$_5$, concentrating on the system's normal state properties near to $T_c$ and aiming to detect distinct signatures of possible pairing mechanisms. In particular, the quadrupole frequency and spin-lattice relaxation rate were measured for the two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites and for both Ga isotopes, in the temperature range 1.6 K - 300 K. No evidence of significant charge fluctuations is found from the NQR observables. On the contrary, the low-energy dynamics is dominated by anisotropic spin fluctuations with strong, nearly critical, in-plane character, which are effectively identical to the case of the sister compound PuCoIn$_5$. These findings are discussed within the context of different theoretical proposals for the unconventional pairing mechanism in heavy-fermion superconductors.

S=1/2 quantum critical spin ladders produced by orbital ordering in Ba2CuTeO6

The ordered hexagonal perovskite Ba2CuTeO6 hosts weakly coupled S=1/2 spin ladders produced by an orbital ordering of Cu2+. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) of Ba2CuTeO6 is well described by that expected for isolated spin ladders with exchange coupling of J~86 K but shows a deviation from the expected thermally activated behavior at low temperatures below T*~25 K. An anomaly in chi(T), indicative of magnetic ordering, is observed at T_mag=16 K. No clear signature of long-range ordering, however, is captured in NMR, specific heat or neutron diffraction measurements at and below T_mag. The marginal magnetic transition, indicative of strong quantum fluctuations, is evidence that Ba2CuTeO6 is in very close proximity to a quantum critical point between a magnetically ordered phase and a gapped spin liquid controlled by inter-ladder couplings.

Anisotropic Ru3+ 4d5 magnetism in the alpha-RuCl3 honeycomb system: susceptibility, specific heat and Zero field NMR

Hexagonal alpha-Ru trichloride single crystals exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy and we show that upon applying fields up to 14 T in the honeycomb plane the successive magnetic order at T1 = 14 K and T2 = 8 K could be completely suppressed whereas in the perpendicular direction the magnetic order is robust. Furthermore the field dependence of chi(T) implies coexisting ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange between in-plane components of Ru^3+-spins, whereas for out-of-plane components a strong antiferromagnetic exchange becomes evident. 101^Ru zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance in the ordered state evidence a complex (probably non coplanar chiral) long-range magnetic structure. The large orbital moment on Ru^3+ is found in density-functional calculations.

Evidence for spin-triplet superconductivity in U$_2$PtC$_2$ from $^{195}$Pt NMR

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the $^{195}$Pt nucleus in an aligned powder of the moderately heavy-fermion material U2PtC2 are consistent with spin-triplet pairing in its superconducting state. Across the superconducting transition temperature and to much lower temperatures, the NMR Knight shift is temperature independent for field both parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, expected for triplet equal-spin pairing superconductivity. The NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T$_1$, in the normal state, exhibits characteristics of ferromagnetic fluctuations, compatible with an enhanced Wilson ratio. In the superconducting state, 1/T$_1$ follows a power law with temperature without a coherence peak giving additional support that U$_2$PtC$_2$ is an unconventional superconductor. Bulk measurements of the AC-susceptibility and resistivity indicate that the upper critical field exceeds the Pauli limiting field for spin-singlet pairing and is near the orbital limiting field, an additional indication for spin-triplet pairing.

Microscopic Properties of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor PuCoIn$_5$ Explored by Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We report $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoIn$_5$, in the temperature range $0.29{\rm K}\leq T\leq 75{\rm K}$. The NQR parameters for the two crystallographically inequivalent In sites are determined, and their temperature dependence is investigated. A linear shift of the quadrupolar frequency with lowering temperature below the critical value $T_c$ is revealed, in agreement with the prediction for composite pairing. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ clearly signals a superconducting (SC) phase transition at $T_c\simeq 2.3$K, with strong spin fluctuations, mostly in-plane, dominating the relaxation process in the normal state near to $T_c$. Analysis of the $T_1^{-1}$ data in the SC state suggests that PuCoIn$_5$ is a strong-coupling $d$-wave superconductor.

Superconducting properties of the oxygen-vacant iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO1-x from underdoped to overdoped compositions

A wide-range doping was achieved by a high-pressure method for TbFeAsO1-x from "under doped" to "over doped" superconducting compositions throughout the optimized superconductivity (Tc of 44 K). Tc vs. lattice constant shows a dome-shaped feature, while Tc vs. the lattice constant likely follows a unique empirical curve over the doping range. The relatively large amount of oxygen vacancies up to 0.3 per the formula unit was introduced possibly because of the smaller replacement Tb than the other Ln (rare-earth element) in the LnFeAsO1-x system.

Anisotropic superconducting gap in transuranium superconductor PuRhGa$_{5}$: Ga NQR study on a single crystal

^{69,71}Ga NMR/NQR studies have been performed on a single crystal of the transuranium superconductor PuRhGa_{5} with Tc ~ 9 K. We have observed a ^{69}Ga NQR line at ~29.15 MHz, and assigned it to the $4i$ Ga site using the NMR results. The ^{69}Ga NQR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1} shows no coherence peak just below Tc, but obeys a T^{3} behavior below Tc. This result strongly suggests that PuRhGa_{5} is an unconventional superconductor having an anisotropic superconducting gap.
