Extreme Kerr black hole microstates with horizon fluff

We present a one-function family of solutions to 4D vacuum Einstein equations. While all diffeomorphic to the same extremal Kerr black hole, they are labeled by well-defined conserved charges and are hence distinct geometries. We show that this family of solutions forms a phase space the symplectic structure of which is invariant under a $U(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra generated by currents $\mathbb{J}_n$ and Virasoro generators $\mathbb{L}_n$ with central charge six times angular momentum of the black hole. This symmetry algebra is well-defined everywhere in the spacetime, near the horizon or in the asymptotic flat region. Out of the appropriate combination of $\mathbb{J}_n$ charges, we construct another Virasoro algebra at the same central charge. Requiring that these two Virasoro algebras should describe the same system leads us to a proposal for identifying extreme Kerr black hole microstates, dubbed as extreme Kerr fluff. Counting these microstates, we not only correctly reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extreme Kerr black hole, but also its expected logarithmic corrections.

Yang-Baxter Deformations Beyond Coset Spaces (a slick way to do TsT)

Yang-Baxter string sigma-models provide a systematic way to deform coset geometries, such as $AdS_p \times S^p$, while retaining the $σ$-model integrability. It has been shown that the Yang-Baxter deformation in target space is simply an open-closed string map that can be defined for any geometry, not just coset spaces. Given a geometry with an isometry group and a bivector that is assumed to be a linear combination of antisymmetric products of Killing vectors, we show the equations of motion of (generalized) supergravity reduce to the Classical Yang-Baxter Equation associated with the isometry group, proving the statement made in [1]. These results bring us closer to the proof of the "YB solution generating technique" for (generalized) supergravity advertised in [1] and in particular provide an economical way to perform TsT transformations.

Horizon fluff, semi-classical black hole microstates - Log-corrections to BTZ entropy and black hole/particle correspondence

According to the horizon fluff proposal microstates of a generic black hole belong to a certain subset of near horizon soft hairs that cannot be extended beyond the near horizon region. In [1,2] it was shown how the horizon fluff proposal works for AdS3 black holes. In this work we clarify further this picture by showing that BTZ black hole microstates are in general among the coherent states in the Hilbert space associated with conic spaces or their Virasoro descendants, provided we impose a (Bohr-type) quantization condition on the angular deficit. Thus BTZ black holes may be viewed as condensates (or solitonic states) of AdS3 particles. We provide canonical and microcanonical descriptions of the statistical mechanical system associated with BTZ black holes and their microstates, and relate them. As a further non-trivial check we show the horizon fluff proposal correctly reproduces the expected logarithmic corrections to the BTZ entropy.

Calibrated Entanglement Entropy

The Ryu-Takayanagi prescription reduces the problem of calculating entanglement entropy in CFTs to the determination of minimal surfaces in a dual anti-de Sitter geometry. For 3D gravity theories and BTZ black holes, we identify the minimal surfaces as special Lagrangian cycles calibrated by the real part of the holomorphic one-form of a spacelike hypersurface. We show that (generalised) calibrations provide a unified way to determine holographic entanglement entropy from minimal surfaces, which is applicable to warped AdS$_3$ geometries. We briefly discuss generalisations to higher dimensions.

Banados and SUSY: On Supersymmetry and Minimal Surfaces of Locally AdS3 Geometries

We extend the classification of supersymmetric locally AdS$_3$ geometries, beyond BTZ black holes, to the Banados geometries, noting that supersymmetries are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to the Hill differential condition. We show that the number of global supersymmetries is an orbit invariant quantity and identify geometries with zero, one, two, three and four global supersymmetries. As an application of our classification, we exploit supersymmetry, which is preserved locally in the bulk, to determine space-like co-dimension two surfaces in AdS$_3$. In the process, we by-pass geodesics or mappings of AdS$_3$, neither of which have an analogue in higher dimensions, to recover known Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surfaces. Our findings suggest supersymmetry can be exploited to find extremal surfaces in holographic entanglement entropy.

Horizon Fluffs: Near Horizon Soft Hairs as Microstates of Generic AdS3 Black Holes

In [1] the horizon fluffs proposal is put forward to identify microstates of generic non-extremal three-dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes. The proposal is that black hole microstates, which were dubbed as horizon fluffs, are states labelled by the conserved charges associated with non-trivial diffeomorphisms on the near horizon geometry and these states are not in the coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro algebra at the Brown-Henneaux central charge, associated with the BTZ black holes. It is also known that AdS3 Einstein gravity has more general black hole solutions than the BTZ family which are generically described by two periodic, but otherwise arbitrary, holomorphic and anti-holomorphic functions. We show that these general AdS3 black holes which are typically conformal descendants of the BTZ black holes and are characterised by the associated Virasoro coadjoint orbits, appear as coherent states in the asymptotic symmetry algebra corresponding to the black hole family. We apply the horizon fluffs proposal to these generic AdS3 black holes and identify the corresponding microstates. We then perform microstate counting and compute the entropy. The entropy appears to be an orbit invariant quantity, providing an important check for the horizon fluffs proposal.

On 3d Bulk Geometry of Virasoro Coadjoint Orbits: Orbit invariant charges and Virasoro hair on locally AdS3 geometries

Expanding upon [arXiv:1404.4472, 1511.06079], we provide further detailed analysis of Bañados geometries, the most general solutions to the AdS3 Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. We analyze in some detail the causal, horizon and boundary structure, and geodesic motion on these geometries, as well as the two class of symplectic charges one can associate with these geometries: charges associated with the exact symmetries and the Virasoro charges. We elaborate further the one-to-one relation between the coadjoint orbits of two copies of Virasoro group and Bañados geometries. We discuss that the information about the Bañados goemetries fall into two categories: "orbit invariant" information and "Virasoro hairs". The former are geometric quantities while the latter are specified by the non-local surface integrals. We elaborate on multi-BTZ geometries which have some number of disconnected pieces at the horizon bifurcation curve. We study multi-BTZ black hole thermodynamics and discuss that the thermodynamic quantities are orbit invariants. We also comment on the implications of our analysis for a 2d CFT dual which could possibly be dual to AdS3 Einstein gravity.

Excitation Entanglement Entropy in 2d Conformal Field Theories

We analyze how excitations affect the entanglement entropy for an arbitrary entangling interval in a 2d conformal field theory (CFT) using the holographic entanglement entropy techniques as well as direct CFT computations. We introduce the excitation entanglement entropy Δ_h S, the difference between the entanglement entropy generic excitations and their arbitrary descendants denoted by h. The excitation entanglement entropy, unlike the entanglement entropy, is a finite quantity (independent of the cutoff), and hence a good physical observable. We show that the excitation entanglement entropy is governed by a second order differential equation sourced by the one point function of the energy momentum tensor computed in the excited background state. We analyze low and high temperature behavior of the excitation entanglement entropy and show that Δ_h S grows as function of temperature. We prove an "integrated positivity" for the excitation entanglement entropy, that although Δ_h S can be positive or negative, its average value is always positive. We also discuss the mutual and multipartite information with generic excitations.

Three Theorems on Near Horizon Extremal Vanishing Horizon Geometries

EVH black holes are Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon area, where vanishing of horizon area is a result of having a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We prove three theorems regarding near horizon geometry of EVH black hole solutions to generic Einstein gravity theories in diverse dimensions. These generic gravity theories are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Lambda theories, and gauged or ungauged supergravity theories with U(1) Maxwell fields. Our three theorems are: (1) The near horizon geometry of any EVH black hole has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace. (2) If the energy momentum tensor of the theory satisfies strong energy condition either this 3d part is an AdS3, or the solution is a direct product of a locally 3d flat space and a d-3 dimensional part. (3) These results extend to the near horizon geometry of near-EVH black holes, for which the AdS3 part is replaced with BTZ geometry.

Black Rings in U(1)^3 Supergravity and their dual 2d CFT

We study the near horizon geometry of black ring solutions in five-dimensional U(1)^3 supergravity with three electric dipole charges and one angular momentum. We consider the extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limit of these solutions and show that the near horizon geometries develop locally AdS_3 throats which at the near-EVH near horizon limit the AdS_3 factor turns to a BTZ black hole. By analysing the first law of thermodynamics for black rings we show that at EVH limit it reduces to the first law of thermodynamics for BTZ black holes. Using the AdS3/CFT2 duality, we propose a dual CFT to describe the near-horizon low energy dynamics of near-EVH black rings. We also discuss the connection between our CFT proposal and the Kerr/CFT correspondence in the cases where these two overlap.

Near Horizon Structure of Extremal Vanishing Horizon Black Holes

We study the near horizon structure of Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes, extremal black holes with vanishing horizon area with a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We construct the most general near horizon EVH and near-EVH ansatz for the metric and other fields, like dilaton and gauge fields which may be present in the theory. We prove that (1) the near horizon EVH geometry for generic gravity theory in generic dimension has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace; (2) if the matter fields of the theory satisfy strong energy condition either this 3d part is AdS$_3$, or the solution is a direct product of a locally 3d flat space and a $d-3$ dimensional part; (3) these results extend to the near horizon geometry of near-EVH black holes, for which the AdS$_3$ part is replaced with BTZ geometry. We present some specific near horizon EVH geometries in 3, 4 and 5 dimensions for which there is a classification. We also briefly discuss implications of these generic results for generic (gauged) supergravity theories and also for the thermodynamics of near-EVH black holes and the EVH/CFT proposal.

On Classification of Geometries with SO(2,2) Symmetry

Motivated by the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes, their near horizon geometry and the EVH/CFT proposal, we construct and classify solutions with (local) SO(2,2) symmetry to four and five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theory with positive, zero or negative cosmological constant Lambda, the EMD-$Λ$ theory, and also $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions and $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. In four dimensions the geometries are warped product of AdS3 with an interval or a circle. In five dimensions the geometries are of the form of warped product of AdS3 and a 2d surface $Σ_2$. For the Einsten-Maxwell-$Λ$ theory we prove that $Σ_2$ should have a U(1) isometry, a rigidity theorem in this class of solutions. We also construct all d dimensional Einstein vacuum solutions with $SO(2,2) \times U(1)^{d-4}$ or $SO(2,2) \times SO(d-3)$ isometry.

Non-Supersymmetric Attractors in BI black holes

We study attractor mechanism in extremal black holes of Einstein-Born-Infeld theories in four dimensions. We look for solutions which are regular near the horizon and show that they exist and enjoy the attractor behavior. The attractor point is determined by extremization of the effective potential at the horizon. This analysis includes the backreaction and supports the validity of non-supersymmetric attractors in the presence of higher derivative interactions in the gauge field part.

Non-Supersymmetric Attractors in $R^2$ Gravities

We investigate the attractor mechanism for spherically symmetric extremal black holes in a theory of general $R^2$ gravity in 4-dimensions, coupled to gauge fields and moduli fields. For the general $R^2$ theory, we look for solutions which are analytic near the horizon, show that they exist and enjoy the attractor behavior. The attractor point is determined by extremization of an effective potential at the horizon. This analysis includes the backreaction and supports the validity of non-supersymmetric attractors in the presence of higher derivative interactions. To include a wider class of solutions, we continue our analysis for the specific case of a Gauss-Bonnet theory which is non-topological, due to the coupling of Gauss-Bonnet terms to the moduli fields. We find that the regularity of moduli fields at the horizon is sufficient for attractor behavior. For the non-analytic sector, this regularity condition in turns implies the minimality of the effective potential at the attractor point.
