Limits on light WIMPs with a germanium detector at 177 eVee threshold at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

The China Dark Matter Experiment reports results on light WIMP dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a germanium detector array with a total mass of 20 g. The physics threshold achieved is 177 eVee ("ee" represents electron equivalent energy) at 50% signal efficiency. With 0.784 kg-days of data, exclusion region on spin-independent coupling with the nucleon is derived, improving over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 4.6 GeV.

Quasi-three-level laser emission of neodymium doped disordered crystal waveguides

This paper reports on the quasi-three-level continuous wave laser operation based on waveguide structures in neodymium doped calcium niobium gallium garnet disordered crystal. Laser wavelength selection through the waveguide cross section was observed. Waveguide structures with different cross sections were fabricated by the ultrafast laser inscription, which have propagation losses around 1 dB/cm. With suitable pumping conditions, laser emissions were observed at the low-wavelengths of ~930 nm and ~890 nm. The lasing threshold for the low-wavelength emission was around 50 mW, which is far below the threshold of several watts reported in the bulk laser system. In addition, it was found the laser generation at the wavelength of ~890 nm has direct relationship with the volume of the waveguide structure. The results suggest advantages of the waveguide platforms over the bulk systems on the low-wavelength laser emission.

Effects of field-aligned flows on standing kink and sausage modes supported by coronal loops

Fundamental standing modes and their overtones play an important role in coronal seismology. We examine how a significant field-aligned flow affects standing modes supported by coronal loops, modeled here as cold magnetic slabs. Of particular interest are the period ratios of the fundamental to its $(n-1)$-th overtone ($P_1/nP_n$) for both kink and sausage modes, and the threshold half-width-to-length ratio for sausage modes. For standing kink modes, the flow significantly reduces $P_1/nP_n$ in general, the effect being particularly strong for larger $n$ and when the density contrast $ρ_0/ρ_e$ between loops and their surroundings is weak. That said, even when $ρ_0/ρ_e$ approaches infinity, this effect is still substantial, reducing the minimal $P_1/nP_n$ by up to 13.7% (24.5%) for $n=2$ ($n=4$) relative to the static case, when the Alfvén Mach number $M_A$ reaches 0.8 where $M_A$ measures the loop flow speed in units of the internal Alfvén speed. For standing sausage modes, though not negligible, the flow effect in reducing $P_1/nP_n$ is not as strong. However, the threshold half-width-to-length ratio is considerably larger in the flowing case than its static counterpart. For $ρ_0/ρ_e$ in the range $[9, 1024]$ and $M_A$ in the range $[0, 0.5]$, an exhaustive parameter study yields that this threshold is well fitted by our Equation (23) which involves the two parameters in a simple way. This allows one to analytically constrain the combination $(ρ_0/ρ_e, M_A)$ for a loop with known width-to-length ratio when a standing sausage oscillation is identified therein. It also allows one to further examine the idea of partial sausage modes, and the flow is found to reduce significantly the spatial extent where partial modes are allowed.

First results on low-mass WIMP from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping underground Laboratory

The China Dark matter Experiment collaboration reports the first experimental limit on WIMP dark matter from 14.6 kg-day of data taken with a 994 g p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jinping underground Laboratory where the rock overburden is more than 2400 m. The energy threshold achieved was 400 eVee. According to the 14.6 kg-day live data, we placed the limit of N= 1.75 * 10^{-40} cm^{2} at 90% confidence level on the spin-independent cross-section at WIMP mass of 7 GeV before differentiating bulk signals from the surface backgrounds.

Enhancement of Spin Injection into Graphene by Water Dipping

We immerse single layer graphene spin valves into purified water for a short duration (<1 min) and investigate the effect on spin transport. Following water immersion, we observe an enhancement in nonlocal magnetoresistance. Additionally, the enhancement of spin signal is correlated with an increase in junction resistance, which produces an increase in spin injection efficiency. This study provides a simple way to improve the signal magnitude and establishes the robustness of graphene spin valves to water exposure, which enables future studies involving chemical functionalization in aqueous solution.

Simulating the WFXT sky

We investigate the scientific impact of the Wide Field X-ray Telescope mission. We present simulated images and spectra of X-ray sources as observed from the three surveys planned for the nominal 5-year WFXT lifetime. The goal of these simulations is to provide WFXT images of the extragalactic sky in different energy bands based on accurate description of AGN populations, normal and star forming galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies. The images are realized using a detailed PSF model, instrumental and physical backgrounds/foregrounds, accurate model of the effective area and the related vignetting effect. Thanks to this comprehensive modelization of the WFXT properties, the simulated images can be used to evaluate the flux limits for detection of point and extended sources, the effect of source confusion at very faint fluxes, and in general the efficiency of detection algorithms. We also simulate the spectra of the detected sources, in order to address specific science topics which are unique to WFXT. Among them, we focus on the characterization of the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) of high-z clusters, and in particular on the measurement of the redshift from the ICM spectrum in order to build a cosmological sample of galaxy clusters. The end-to-end simulation procedure presented here, is a valuable tool in optimizing the mission design. Therefore, these simulations can be used to reliably characterize the WFXT discovery space and to verify the connection between mission requirements and scientific goals. Thanks to this effort, we can conclude on firm basis that an X-ray mission optimized for surveys like WFXT is necessary to bring X-ray astronomy at the level of the optical, IR, submm and radio wavebands as foreseen in the coming decade.

The multi-band nonthermal emission from the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946

Nonthermal X-rays and very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays have been detected from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, and especially the recent observations with the \textit{Suzaku} satellite clearly reveal a spectral cutoff in the X-ray spectrum, which directly relates to the cutoff of the energy spectrum of the parent electrons. However, whether the origin of the VHE $γ$-rays from the SNR is hadronic or leptonic is still in debate. We studied the multi-band nonthermal emission from RX J1713.7-3946 based on a semi-analytical approach to the nonlinear shock acceleration process by including the contribution of the accelerated electrons to the nonthermal radiation. The results show that the multi-band observations on RX J1713.7-3946 can be well explained in the model with appropriate parameters and the TeV $γ$-rays have hadronic origin, i.e., they are produced via proton-proton (p-p) interactions as the relativistic protons accelerated at the shock collide with the ambient matter.
