Pulsar Glitch in a Strangeon Star Model. III. The recovery

Strangeon star model has passed various observational tests, such as the massive pulsars and the tidal deformability during binary mergers. Pulsar glitch, as a useful probe for studying the interior structure of pulsars, has also been studied in strangeon star model in our previous papers, including the recovery coefficient, the waiting time of glitches and glitch activity. In this paper, the recovery process of a glitch is described in the strangeon star model, based on the starquake picture established in Paper I. After the starquake, the inner motion of the stellar matter would reduce the tangential pressure in the cracked places at the equatorial plane. The recovery (increase) of the tangential pressure would be achieved by a viscous flow towards the cracked places at equatorial plane, which leads to the exponential recovery of the spin frequency. A uniform viscous flow can reproduce the single exponential decay observed in some glitches, and the viscous time-scale $τ$ and the depth $h$ of the cracking place below the surface can be fitted by the recovery data. It is found that $h$ increases with glitch size $Δν/ν$, which is expected in the glitch scenario of strangeon stars. The magnitude of the recovery predicted in this recovery model is also consistent with that derived from observations. The single exponential decay reproduced by a uniform viscous flow can be generalized to two or more exponentials by the multi-component of viscous flows.

Machine-Learning Enabled Search for The Next-Generation Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of active catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) made from low-cost materials constitutes a crucial challenge in the utilization of hydrogen energy. Earth-abundant molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) has been discovered recently with good activity and stability for HER. In this report, we employed the hydrothermal technique for MoS$_2$ synthesis which is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach and has the potential for future mass production. To investigate the structure-property relationship, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and various electrochemical characterizations have been conducted. A strong correlation between the material structure and the HER performance has been observed. Moreover, machine-learning (ML) techniques were built and subsequently used within a Bayesian Optimization framework to validate the optimal parameter combinations for synthesizing high-quality MoS$_2$ catalyst within the limited parameter space. The model will be able to guide the wet chemical synthesis of MoS$_2$ and produce the most effective HER catalyst eventually.

Fractal carbon nanotube fibers with mesoporous crystalline structure

Macroscopic fibres of carbon nanotubes are hierarchical structures combining long building blocks preferentially oriented along the fibre axis and a large porosity arising from the imperfect packing of bundles. Synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering SAXS measurements show that such structure is a surface fractal with fractal dimension (Ds) of 2.5 for MWCNT fibres and 2.8 for SWCNT fibres. N2 adsorption measurements give similar values of 2.54 and 2.50, respectively. The fractal dimension and deviation from Porods law are related to density fluctuations associated with the wide distribution of separations between CNTs. These fluctuations are also evident as diffuse wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) from CNTs at distances above turbostratic separation. The structure of CNT fibres produced at different draw ratios is compared in terms of degree of orientation and characteristic lengths parallel and perpendicular to the fibre. Drawing not only increases alignment but also the fraction of graphitic planes forming coherent domains capable of taking part in stress transfer by shear; thus increasing both tensile modulus and strength. The invariant-normalized intensity of the (002) equatorial reflection thus takes the form of a degree of crystallinity closely related to tensile properties.
