Search for millicharged particles in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV

We report on a search for elementary particles with charges much smaller than the electron charge using a data sample of proton-proton collisions provided by the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2023--24, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 124.7~fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6~TeV. The analysis presented uses the completed Run 3 milliQan bar detector to set the most stringent constraints to date for particles with charges $\leq0.24~\rm{e}$ and masses $\geq0.45~\rm{GeV}$.

A subtraction scheme for processes involving fragmentation functions at NLO

We present a novel subtraction method to remove the soft and collinear divergences at next-to-leading order for processes involving an arbitrary number of fragmentation functions, where this method acts directly in the hadronic centre-of-mass frame. We provide the analytical formulae of the subtraction terms in the general case where all the final state partons fragment to hadrons and for the two special cases when one of the partons of the final state does not fragment, i.e. it is a photon or involved in a jet.

Sensitivity to millicharged particles in future proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We report on the expected sensitivity of dedicated scintillator-based detectors at the LHC for elementary particles with charges much smaller than the electron charge. The dataset provided by a prototype scintillator-based detector is used to characterise the performance of the detector and provide an accurate background projection. Detector designs, including a novel slab detector configuration, are considered for the data taking period of the LHC to start in 2022 (Run 3) and for the high luminosity LHC. With the Run 3 dataset, the existence of new particles with masses between 10 MeV and 45 GeV could be excluded at 95% confidence level for charges between 0.003e and 0.3e, depending on their mass. With the high luminosity LHC dataset, the expected limits would reach between 10 MeV and 80 GeV for charges between 0.0018e and 0.3e, depending on their mass

The milliQan experiment: search for milli-charged particles at the LHC

Charge quantization has always been enigmatic. Theoretically, Millicharged particles can be an answer. The use of existing detectors, without affecting their initial mandate, is a very promising low cost new physics detector for millicharged particles. The Milliqan collaboration has installed a 1/100th version of the full detector at LHC point 5 in CMS. Data collected in 2018 is now under investigation/analysis. Some results are presented in this paper.

Search for millicharged particles in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

We report on a search for elementary particles with charges much smaller than the electron charge using a data sample of proton-proton collisions provided by the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37.5 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. A prototype scintillator-based detector is deployed to conduct the first search at a hadron collider sensitive to particles with charges ${\leq}0.1e$. The existence of new particles with masses between 20 and 4700 MeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for charges between $0.006e$ and $0.3e$, depending on their mass. New sensitivity is achieved for masses larger than $700$ MeV.

Synchrotron radiation in a chromo-magnetic field

We study the generalization of QED synchrotron radiation to the QCD case with a chromomagnetic field using the Schwinger {\it et al} source method. It is shown that the QED case can be obtained as a special limit. The comparison with the path integral approach of Zakharov has shown consistent results.

Failure of the collinear expansion in calculation of the induced gluon emission

We demonstrate that the collinear expansion fails in the case of gluon emission from a fast quark produced in $eA$ DIS. In this approximation the N=1 rescattering contribution to the gluon spectrum vanishes. We show that the higher-twist approach by Guo, Wang and Zhang [4,5] based on the collinear expansion is wrong. The nonzero gluon spectrum obtained in [4,5] is a consequence of unjustified neglecting some important terms in the collinear expansion.

2PI effective action and gauge invariance problems

The problem of maintaining gauge invariance when truncating the two particle irreducible (2PI) effective action has been studied recently by several authors. Here we give a simple and very general derivation of the gauge dependence identities for the off-shell 2PI effective action. We consider the case where the gauge is fixed by an arbitrary function of the quantum gauge field, subject only to the restriction that the Faddeev-Popov matrix is invertable. We also study the background field gauge. We address the role that these identies play in solving gauge invariance problems associated with physical quantities calculated using a truncated on-shell 2PI effective action.

POVM optimization of classical correlations

We study the problem of optimization over positive valued-operator measure to extract classical correlation in a bipartite quantum system. The proposed method is applied to binary states only. Moreover, to illustrate this method, an explicit example is studied in details.

Distillable entanglement in $d\otimes d$ dimension

Distillable entanglement ($E_d$) is one of the acceptable measures of entanglement of mixed states. Based on discrimination through local operation and classical communication, this paper gives $E_d$ for two classes of orthogonal multipartite maximally entangled states.

Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal resummation for dilepton production

We consider the thermal emission rate of dileptons from a QCD plasma in the small invariant mass ($Q^2 \sim \gs^2 T^2$) but large energy ($q^0 \gsim T$) range. We derive an integral equation which resums multiple scatterings to include the LPM effect; it is valid at leading order in the coupling. Then we recast it as a differential equation and show a simple algorithm for its solution. We present results for dilepton rates at phenomenologically interesting energies and invariant masses.

A simple sum rule for the thermal gluon spectral function and applications

In this paper, we derive a simple sum rule satisfied by the gluon spectral function at finite temperature. This sum rule is useful in order to calculate exactly some integrals that appear frequently in the photon or dilepton production rate by a quark gluon plasma. Using this sum rule, we rederive simply some known results and obtain some new results that would be extremely difficult to justify otherwise. In particular, we derive an exact expression for the collision integral that appears in the calculation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect.

Enhanced thermal production of hard dileptons by $3\to 2$ processes

In the framework of the Hard Thermal Loop effective theory, we calculate the two-loop contributions to hard lepton pair production in a quark-gluon plasma. We show that the result is free of any infrared and collinear singularity. We also recover the known fact that perturbation theory leads to integrable singularities at the location of the threshold for $q\bar{q}\toγ^*$. It appears that the process calculated here significantly enhances the rate of low mass hard dileptons.

Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in thermal field theory

In recent studies, the production rate of photons or lepton pairs by a quark gluon plasma has been found to be enhanced due to collinear singularities. This enhancement pattern is very dependent on rather strict collinearity conditions between the photon and the quark momenta. It was estimated by neglecting the collisional width of quasi-particles. In this paper, we study the modifications of this collinear enhancement when we take into account the possibility for the quarks to have a finite mean free path. Assuming a mean free path of order $(g^2T\ln(1/g))^{-1}$, we find that only low invariant mass photons are affected. The region where collision effects are important can be interpreted as the region where the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect plays a role in thermal photon production by bremsstrahlung. It is found that this effect modifies the spectrum of very energetic photons as well. Based on these results and on a previous work on infrared singularities, we end this paper by a reasonable physical picture for photon production by a quark gluon plasma, that should be useful to set directions for future technical developments.

Comments on two papers by Kapusta and Wong

We critically examine recently published results on the thermal production of massive vector bosons in a quark-gluon plasma. We claim the production rate is a collinear safe observable.

KLN theorem, magnetic mass, and thermal photon production

We study the infrared singularities associated to ultra-soft transverse gluons in the calculation of photon production by a quark-gluon plasma. Despite the fact that the KLN theorem works in this context and provides cancellations of infrared singularities, it does not prevent the production rate of low invariant mass dileptons to be sensitive to the magnetic mass of gluons and therefore the rate to be non perturbative.
