Nano-magnetic droplets and implications to orbital ordering in La1-xSrxCoO3

Inelastic cold neutron scattering on LaCoO3 provided evidence for a distinct low energy excitation at 0.6 meV coincident with the thermally induced magnetic transition. Coexisting strong ferromagnetic (FM) and weaker antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations that are dynamic follow the activation to the excited state, identified as the intermediate S=1 spin triplet. This is indicative of dynamical orbital ordering favoring the observed magnetic interactions. With hole doping as in La1-xSrxCoO3, the FM correlations between Co spins become static and isotropically distributed due to the formation of FM droplets. The correlation length and condensation temperature of these droplets increase rapidly with metallicity due to the double exchange mechanism.

Nodal quasiparticle in pseudogapped colossal magnetoresistive manganites

A characteristic feature of the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors is the dichotomy between the electronic excitations along the nodal (diagonal) and antinodal (parallel to the Cu-O bonds) directions in momentum space, generally assumed to be linked to the "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements in the superconducting state have revealed a quasiparticle spectrum with a d-wave gap structure that exhibits a maximum along the antinodal direction and vanishes along the nodal direction. Subsequent measurements have shown that, at low doping levels, this gap structure persists even in the high-temperature metallic state, although the nodal points of the superconducting state spread out in finite "Fermi arcs". This is the so-called pseudogap phase, and it has been assumed that it is closely linked to the superconducting state, either by assigning it to fluctuating superconductivity or by invoking orders which are natural competitors of d-wave superconductors. Here we report experimental evidence that a very similar pseudogap state with a nodal-antinodal dichotomous character exists in a system that is markedly different from a superconductor: the ferromagnetic metallic groundstate of the colossal magnetoresistive bilayer manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. Our findings therefore cast doubt on the assumption that the pseudogap state in the copper oxides and the nodal-antinodal dichotomy are hallmarks of the superconductivity state.

Quasiparticle-like peaks, kinks, and electron-phonon coupling at the ($π$,0) regions in the CMR oxide La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Using Angle-Resolved Photoemission (ARPES), we present the first observation of sharp quasiparticle-like peaks in a CMR manganite. We focus on the ($π$,0) regions of k-space and study their electronic scattering rates and dispersion kinks, uncovering the critical energy scales, momentum scales, and strengths of the interactions that renormalize the electrons. To identify these bosons we measured phonon dispersions in the energy range of the kink by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), finding a good match in both energy and momentum to the oxygen bond-stretching phonons.

Percolative Ferromagnetism in Anatase Co:TiO2

We revisit the most widely investigated and controversial oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Co:TiO2, with a new high temperature film growth, and show that the corresponding material is not only an intrinsic DMS ferromagnet, but also supports a percolative mechanism of ferromagnetism. We establish the uniformity of dopant distribution across the film cross section by Z-contrast imaging via scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at spatial resolution of 0.4 nm and the oxidized 2+ valence state of cobalt by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The dependence of magnetic properties on cobalt concentration is consistent with the defect polaron percolation model. The peculiar increase in the transport activation energy above a specific cobalt concentration further emphasizes the polaron contribution to magnetic order.

Full Bulk Spin Polarization and Intrinsic Tunnel Barriers at the Surface of Layered Manganites

Transmission of information using the spin of the electron as well as its charge requires a high degree of spin polarization at surfaces. At surfaces however this degree of polarization can be quenched by competing interactions. Using a combination of surface sensitive x-ray and tunneling probes, we show for the quasi-two-dimensional bilayer manganites that the outermost Mn-O bilayer, alone, is affected: it is a 1-nm thick insulator that exhibits no long-range ferromagnetic order while the next bilayer displays the full spin polarization of the bulk. Such an abrupt localization of the surface effects is due to the two-dimensional nature of the layered manganite while the loss of ferromagnetism is attributed to weakened double exchange in the reconstructed surface bilayer and a resultant antiferromagnetic phase. The creation of a well-defined surface insulator demonstrates the ability to naturally self-assemble two of the most demanding components of an ideal magnetic tunnel junction.

Electric Field Effect in Diluted Magnetic Insulator Anatase Co:TiO2

An external electric field induced reversible modulation of room temperature magnetic moment is achieved in an epitaxial and insulating thin film of dilutely cobalt-doped anatase TiO2. This first demonstration of electric field effect in any oxide based diluted ferromagnet is realized in a high quality epitaxial heterostructure of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/Co:TiO2/SrRuO3 grown on (001) LaAlO3. The observed effect, which is about 15% in strength in a given heterostructure, can be modulated over several cycles. Possible mechanisms for electric field induced modulation of insulating ferromagnetism are discussed.

Co-occurrence of Superparamagnetism and Anomalous Hall Effect in Highly Reduced Cobalt Doped Rutile TiO2 Films

We report a detailed magnetic and structural analysis of highly reduced Co doped rutile TiO2 films displaying an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The temperature and field dependence of magnetization, and transmission electron microscopy clearly establish the presence of nano-sized superparamagnetic cobalt clusters of 8-10 nm size in the films at the interface. The co-occurrence of superparamagnetism and AHE raises questions regarding the use of the AHE as a test of the intrinsic nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

Dynamics of a Two-Level System Coupled to Ohmic Bath: A Perturbation Approach

The physics of a two-level system coupled to Ohmic bath is studied by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. Our main results are: The coherence-incoherence transition is at $α_c={1\over 2}[1+Δ_r/ω_c]$; for $α<α_c$ the dynamical quantity $P(t)=\cos(ω_0 t)\exp(-γt)$; the sussceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(ω)/ω$ is of a double peak structure for $α<α_c$ and the Shiba's relation is exactly satisfied; at the transition point $α=α_c$ the real time correlation function $C(t)\approx -1/γ^2_c t^2$ in the long time limit.

A Critical Examination to the Unitarized $ππ$ Scattering Chiral Amplitudes

We discuss the Padé approximation to the $ππ$ scattering amplitudes in 1--loop chiral perturbation theory. The approximation restores unitarity and can reproduce the correct resonance poles, but the approximation violates crossing symmetry and produce spurious poles on the complex $s$ plane and therefore plagues its predictions on physical quantities at quantitative level. However we find that one virtual state in the IJ=20 channel may have physical relevance.

Hall Coefficient of a Dilute 2D Electron System in Parallel Magnetic Field

Measurements in magnetic fields applied at a small angle with respect to the 2D plane of the electrons of a low-density silicon MOSFET indicate that the Hall coefficient is independent of parallel field from H=0 to $H>H_{sat}$, the field above which the longitudinal resistance saturates and the electrons have reached full spin-polarization. This implies that the mobilities of the spin-up and spin-down electrons remain comparable at all magnetic fields, and suggests there is strong mixing of spin-up and spin-down electron states.

Phonon-Induced Renormalization and Interaction: An Improvement on Frohlich Transformation

Starting from the Flohlich electron-phonon model, which has a history of 50 years, a new unitary transformation is proposed to implement the perturbation treatment. Our main results are: (1)The phonon-induced interaction shows a crossover from the BCS-like potential when the phonon frequency $ω_p$ is much smaller than the Fermi energy $E_F$ to that of the small polarons when $ω_p/E_F\ge 1$. (2)The jump of momentum distribution of electron number $n_{\bf k}$ at the Fermi surface goes to zero when the dimensionless coupling constant $λ$ increases to the critical value $λ_c\ge 1$, which means a possible broken down of the Fermi-liquid description.

Sharp Transition to a Spin-Ordered Phase in the 2D Electron System in Silicon MOSFET's

This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. Measurements at many different angles spanning a broad range of electron densities indicate that the observed doubling of the period of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, which we had attributed to a transition to a new spin-ordered phase, is also consistent with an alternative explanation. A full interpretation of our data will be posted at a later date.

Is There a Unified Description of Conductivity of Layered Cuprates ?

We present a novel approach to the analysis of the normal state in-plane $σ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $σ_{c}$ conductivities of anisotropic layered crystals such as oxygen deficient $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{x}$. It can be shown that the resistive anisotropy is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths in the respective directions; i.e., $σ_{ab}/σ_c=\ell_{ab}^2/\ell_c^2$. From the idea that at all doping levels and temperatures $T$ the out-of-plane transport in these crystals is incoherent, follows that $\ell_c$ is T-independent, equal to the spacing $\ell_0$ between the neighboring bilayers. Thus, the T-dependence of $\ell_{ab}$ is given by the measured anisotropy, and $σ_{ab}(\ell_{ab})$ dependence is obtained by plotting $σ_{ab}$ vs $\ell=(σ_{ab}/σ_c)^{1/2}\ell_0$. The analysis of several single crystals of $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{x}$ ($6.35<x<6.93$) shows that for all of them $σ_{ab}(\ell)$ is described by a universal dependence $σ_{ab}/\barσ=f(\ell/\bar\ell)$ with doping dependent parameters $\barσ$ and $\bar\ell$.

Thermal excitations of frustated XY spins in two dimensions

We present a new variational approach to the study of phase transitions in frustrated 2D XY models. In the spirit of Villain's approach for the ferromagnetic case we divide thermal excitations into a low temperature long wavelength part (LW) and a high temperature short wavelength part (SW). In the present work we mainly deal with LW excitations and we explicitly consider the cases of the fully frustrated triangular (FFTXY) and square ( FFSQXY) XY models. The novel aspect of our method is that it preserves the coupling between phase (spin angles) and chiral degrees of freedom. LW fluctuations consist of coupled phase and chiral excitations. As a result, we find that for frustrated systems the effective interactions between phase variables is long range and oscillatory in contrast to the unfrustrated problem. Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations we show that our analytical calculations produce accurate results at all temperature $T$; this is seen at low $T$ in the spin wave stiffness constant and in the staggered chirality; this is also the case near $T_c$: transitions are driven by the SW part associated with domain walls and vortices, but the coupling between phase and chiral variables is still relevant in the critical region. In that regime our analytical results yield the correct $T$ dependence for bare couplings (given by the LW fluctuations) such as the Coulomb gas temperature $T_{CG}$ of the frustrated XY models . In particular we find that $T_{CG}$ tracks chiral rather than phase fluctuations. Our results provides support for a single phase transition scenario in the FFTXY and FFSQXY models.
