Contacting single bundles of carbon nanotubes with alternating electric fields

Single bundles of carbon nanotubes have been selectively deposited from suspensions onto sub-micron electrodes with alternating electric fields. We explore the resulting contacts using several solvents and delineate the differences between Au and Ag as electrode materials. Alignment of the bundles between electrodes occurs at frequencies above 1 kHz. Control over the number of trapped bundles is achieved by choosing an electrode material which interacts strongly with the chemical functional groups of the carbon nanotubes, with superior contacts being formed with Ag electrodes.

Stability of antiferromagnetism at high magnetic fields in Mn3Si

We report low temperature measurements of the specific heat, resistivity and magnetisation of the itinerant antiferromagnet Mn3Si. The unprecedented stability of the magnetic state to high magnetic field up to 14 T inferred from the invariance of these bulk properties is incompatible with itinerant magnetism expected of a conventional Fermi liquid.

Superconducting energy gap distribution of MgB$_2$ investigated by point-contact spectroscopy

We performed point-contact spectroscopy on the binary superconductor MgB$_2$. The differential conductance shows gap-related structures which vary in width and position from contact to contact. The distribution of energy gaps shows a distinct accumulation around 1.7 and 7 meV which is associated with the occurrence of a small and a large energy gap in MgB$_2$. While with increasing $T$ the structure in $dI/dV$ associated with the small gap is present up to $T_C$, in magnetic field it is suppressed well below $B_{c2}$.

Non-equilibrium electronic transport and interaction in short metallic nanobridges

We have observed interaction effects in the differential conductance $G$ of short, disordered metal bridges in a well-controlled non-equilibrium situation, where the distribution function has a double Fermi step. A logarithmic scaling law is found both for the temperature and for the voltage dependence of $G$ in all samples. The absence of magnetic field dependence and the low dimensionality of our samples allow us to distinguish between several possible interaction effects, proposed recently in nanoscopic samples. The universal scaling curve is explained quantitatively by the theory of electron-electron interaction in diffusive metals, adapted to the present case, where the sample size is smaller than the thermal diffusion length.

Zero-bias transport anomaly in metallic nanobridges: Magnetic field dependence and universal conductance fluctuations

We present data of transport measurements through a metallic nanobridge exhibiting diffusive electron transport. A logarithmic temperature dependence and a zero-bias anomaly in the differential conductance are observed, independent of magnetic field. The data can be described by a single scaling law. The theory of electron-electron interaction in disordered systems, adapted to the case of finite-size systems in non-equilibrium, yields quantitative agreement with experiment. Measurements of universal conductance functuations support the assumptions of the theory about the electronic phase coherence.

Spin-triplet superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ probed by Andreev reflection

The superconducting gap function of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ was investigated by means of quasiparticle reflection and transmission at the normal conductor-superconductor interface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$-Pt point contacts. We found two distinguishly different types of $dV/dI$ vs $V$ spectra either with a double-minimum structure or with a zero-bias conductance anomaly. Both types of spectra are expected in the limit of high and low transparency, respectively, of the interface barrier between a normal metal and a spin-triplet superconductor. Together with the temperature dependence of the spectra this result strongly supports a spin-triplet superconducting order parameter for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Magnetic order and transport in the heavy-fermion system CeCu_{6-x}Au_x

We report on extensive elastic neutron scattering to determine the wave vector of the magnetic order in CeCu_{6-x}Au_x single crystals for x > 0.1. For all values of x investigated (0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) we find long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with an ordering vector Q $\approx$ (0.625 0 0.275) for x=0.2, nearly unchanged for x=0.3, and Q $\approx$ (0.59 0 0) for x=0.5, staying roughly the same for x=1.0. In addition, short-range correlations are observed at x=0.2, reminiscent of those found previously for x=0.1. The ordered magnetic moment is found to increase rapidly for small x, and more slowly for the larger x values. The increase of the specific-heat anomaly at the ordering temperature with x is in qualitative accord with this behavior. Finally, data of the electrical resistivity for current flow along the three crystallographic directions are presented, showing a clear signature of the magnetic order. A theoretical interpretation of the interplay of magnetic order and transport in terms of (i) the partial suppression of the Kondo effect by the staggered magnetization and (ii) the anisotropic band structure induced by the staggered field is shown to account well for the data, provided the ordering vector Q is close to 2 k_F, where k_F is a typical Fermi momentum.

Two-dimensional fluctuations at the quantum-critical point of CeCu_{6-x}Au_x

The heavy-fermion system CeCu_{6-x}Au_x exhibits a quantum critical point at x_c = 0.1 separating nonmagnetic and magnetically ordered ground states. The pronounced non-Fermi-liquid behavior at x_c calls for a search for the relevant quantum critical fluctuations. Systematic measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section S(q,omega) for x = 0.1 reveal rod-like features in the reciprocal ac plane translating to two-dimensional (2d) fluctuations in real space. We find 3d magnetic ordering peaks for x = 0.2 and 0.3 located on these rods which hence can be viewed as 2d precursors of the 3d order.

A mechanism for the non-Fermi-liquid behavior in CeCu_{6-x}Au_x

We propose an explanation for the recently observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior of metallic alloys CeCu_{6-x}Au_x: near x=0.1, the specific heat c is proportional to T \ln (T_0/T) and the resistivity increases linearly with temperature T over a wide range of T. These features follow from a model in which three-dimensional conduction electrons are coupled to two-dimensional critical ferromagnetic fluctuations near the quantum critical point, x_{c}=0.1. This picture is motivated by the neutron scattering data in the ordered phase (x=0.2) and is consistent with the observed phase diagram.
