Of Substitution and Doping: Spatial and Electronic Structure in Fe Pnictides

A highly intriguing aspect in iron-pnictide superconductors is the composition-dependent electronic structure, in particular the question if and how charge carriers are introduced to the system upon substitution of Ba by alkali metals or of Fe by other transition metals, TM. We report on a systematic study of spatial structure and electronic states by x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption on a large number of compositions in the (Ba,K)(Fe,TM)2As2 family. The coherent combination of detailed structural information with an in-depth analysis of the electronic structure allows us to sensitively disentangle (charge-carrier) "doping" effects from "substitutional" effects. Results include a doping character that is site-decoupled, as well as TM 3d energy-level schemes that exhibit non-standard level sequences and even t2-e level crossings. Our study indicates that doping per se seems to play a lesser role than expected for pnictide superconductivity and magnetism.

Anomalous Hall effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn5Si3

Metallic antiferromagnets with noncollinear orientation of magnetic moments provide a playground for investigating spin-dependent transport properties by analysis of the anomalous Hall effect. The intermetallic compound Mn5Si3 is an intinerant antiferromagnet with collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures due to Mn atoms on two inequivalent lattice sites. Here, magnetotransport measurements on polycrystalline thin films and a single crystal are reported. In all samples, an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect attributed to the noncollinear arrangment of magnetic moments is observed. Furthermore, an additional magnetic phase between the noncollinear and collinear regimes above a metamagnetic transition is resolved in the single crystal by the anomalous Hall effect.

Transverse and Longitudinal Magnetic-Field Responses in the Ising Ferromagnets URhGe, UCoGe and UGe2

The field dependence of the electronic specific heat gamma(H) of URhGe is determined using temperature-dependent magnetization measurements and Maxwell's relation for all three orthorhombic directions. A large (40 %) enhancement of gamma(H) is found at the reorientational transition for fields applied along the b hard axis, which we argue occurs when the field-induced moment is of the same size as the zero-field ordered moment M0. Fields applied along the easy direction, on the other hand, lead to a rapid suppression of gamma(H). We emphasize that this behavior is also applicable to the closely related ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and UGe2 and discuss implications for the novel field-induced/enhanced superconductivity in these materials.

Doping evolution of superconducting gaps and electronic densities of states in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 iron pnictides

An extensive calorimetric study of the normal- and superconducting-state properties of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is presented for 0 < x < 0.2. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases (decreases) with Co doping for x < 0.06 (x > 0.06), which illustrates the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity to monopolize the Fermi surface in the underdoped region and the filling of the hole bands for overdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. All superconducting samples exhibit a residual electronic density of states of unknown origin in the zero-temperature limit, which is minimal at optimal doping but increases to the normal-state value in the strongly under- and over-doped regions. The remaining specific heat in the superconducting state is well described using a two-band model with isotropic s-wave superconducting gaps.

A Scanning Tunneling Microscope for a Dilution Refrigerator

We present the main features of a home-built scanning tunneling microscope that has been attached to the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator. It allows scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements down to the base temperature of the cryostat, T approx. 30mK, and in applied magnetic fields up to 13T. The topography of both highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and the dichalcogenide superconductor NbSe2 have been imaged with atomic resolution down to T approx. 50mK as determined from a resistance thermometer adjacent to the sample. As a test for a successful operation in magnetic fields, the flux-line lattice of superconducting NbSe2 in low magnetic fields has been studied. The lattice constant of the Abrikosov lattice shows the expected field dependence B^{-0.5} and measurements in the STS mode clearly show the superconductive density of states with Andreev bound states in the vortex core.

Calorimetric Evidence of Multiband Superconductivity in Ba(Fe0.925Co0.075)2As2

We report on the determination of the electronic heat capacity of a slightly overdoped (x = 0.075) Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal with a Tc of 21.4 K. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat provides strong evidence for a two-band s-wave order parameter with gap amplitudes 2D1(0)/kBTc=1.9 and 2D2(0)/kBTc=4.4. Our result is consistent with the recently predicted s+- order parameter [I. I. Mazin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 057003 (2008)].

Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of LaCoO$_{3}$, La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$, and La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ films: Evidence for Co valency-dependent magnetism and magnetic anisotropy

Epitaxial thin films of undoped LaCoO$_{3}$\@, of electron-doped La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@, and of hole-doped La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@ exhibit ferromagnetic order with a transition temperature $T_{\rm{C}}$ $\approx$ 85 K, 22 K, and 240 K, respectively. The spin-state structure for these compounds was studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co $L_{2,3}$ and O $K$ edges. It turns out that a higher spin state of the Co$^{3+}$ ions is responsible for the magnetism in LaCoO$_{3}$\@ while for La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ the Co$^{3+}$ ions are in a low-spin state and the ferromagnetism is predominantly determined by Co$^{2+}$\@. For La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@, on the other hand, the magnetism originates from higher spin states of Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$\@. Moreover, a strong magnetic anisotropy is observed for all systems.

Echo of the Quantum Phase Transition of CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ in XPS: Breakdown of Kondo Screening

We present an X-ray photoemission study of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ across the magnetic quantum phase transition of this compound at temperatures above the single-ion Kondo temperature $T_K$. In dependence of the Au concentration $x$ we observe a sudden change of the $f$-occupation number $n_f$ and the core-hole potential $U_{df}$ at the critical concentration $x_c=0.1$. We interpret these findings in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. Our results are in excellent agreement with findings from earlier UPS measurements %\cite{klein08qpt} and provide further information about the precursors of quantum criticality at elevated temperatures.

Suppression of the ferromagnetic state in LaCoO3 films by rhombohedral distortion

Epitaxially strained LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films were grown with different film thickness, t, on (001) oriented (LaAlO3)0.3(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates. After initial pseudomorphic growth the films start to relieve their strain partly by the formation of periodic nano-twins with twin planes predominantly along the <100> direction. Nano-twinning occurs already at the initial stage of growth, albeit in a more moderate way. Pseudomorphic grains, on the other hand, still grow up to a thickness of at least several tenths of nanometers. The twinning is attributed to the symmetry lowering of the epitaxially strained pseudo-tetragonal structure towards the relaxed rhombohedral structure of bulk LCO. However, the unit-cell volume of the pseudo-tetragonal structure is found to be nearly constant over a very large range of t. Only films with t > 130 nm show a significant relaxation of the lattice parameters towards values comparable to those of bulk LCO.

Evolution of ferromagnetic order in URhGe alloyed with Ru, Co and Si

We have investigated the evolution of ferromagnetic order in the correlated metal URhGe (Curie temperature $T_{\rm C} = $9.5 K) by chemical substitution of Ru, Co and Si. Polycrystalline samples URh$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$Ge ($x \leq $0.6), URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge ($x \leq $0.9) and URhGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ ($x \leq $0.2) have been prepared and the magnetic properties have been investigated by magnetization and transport experiments. In the case of Ru doping, $T_{\rm C}$ initially increases, but then decreases linearly as a function of $x$ and is completely suppressed for $x_{\rm cr} \approx 0.38$. The Curie temperature in the URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge series has a broad maximum $T_{\rm C} = 20$ K near $x=0.6$ and then drops to 8 K for $x=0.9$. In the case of Si doping $T_{\rm C}$ stays roughly constant. We conclude that the alloy systems URh$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$Ge and URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge are interesting candidates to study the ferromagnetic instability.

Thermal expansion of the quasi two-dimensional magnetic layered compound BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ under magnetic fields along c-axis

The quasi two-dimensional magnetic BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is studied by using high-resolution thermal expansion in magnetic fields up to 10 T applied along the c-axis. A slight increase of about 1 % of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_N$ is observed at 10 T. Positive and negative pressure dependencies of $T_N$, respectively, are inferred from the thermal expansion $α(T)$ for pressures applied along the $a$- and $c$-axes.

Determining the current polarization in Al/Co nanostructured point contacts

We present a study of the Andreev reflections in superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructured point contacts. The experimental data are analyzed in the frame of a model with two spin-dependent transmission coefficients for the majority and minority charge carriers in the ferromagnet. This model consistently describes the whole set of conductance measurements as a function of voltage, temperature, and magnetic field. The ensemble of our results shows that the degree of spin polarization of the current can be unambiguously determined using Andreev physics.

Driving current through single organic molecules

We investigate electronic transport through two types of conjugated molecules. Mechanically controlled break-junctions are used to couple thiol endgroups of single molecules to two gold electrodes. Current-voltage characteristics (IVs) of the metal-molecule-metal system are observed. These IVs reproduce the spatial symmetry of the molecules with respect to the direction of current flow. We hereby unambigously detect an intrinsic property of the molecule, and are able to distinguish the influence of both the molecule and the contact to the metal electrodes on the transport properties of the compound system.

CsMn(Br_xI_{1-x})_3: Crossover from an XY to an Ising Chiral Antiferromagnet

We report on high-resolution specific-heat and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnets CsMn(Br_xI_{1-x})_3 with different x. The evolution of the magnetic phase diagrams from the easy-axis system for x = 0 to the easy-plane system for x = 1 was studied in detail. The specific-heat critical exponent alpha of the almost isotropic x = 0.19 system agrees with the value predicted for a chiral Heisenberg scenario. In an applied magnetic field (B = 6 T) a crossover to a weak first-order transition is detected.

Field-induced metal-insulator transition in a two-dimensional organic superconductor

The quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor beta-(BEDT-TTF)_2SF_5CH_2CF_2SO_3 (T_c approx 4.4 K)shows very strong Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations which are superimposed on a highly anomalous steady background magnetoresistance, R_b. Comparison with de Haas- van Alphen oscillations allow a reliable estimate of R_b which is crucial for the correct extraction of the SdH signal. At low temperatures and high magnetic fields insulating behavior evolves. The magnetoresistance data violate Kohler's rule, i.e., cannot be described within the framework of semiclassical transport theory, but converge onto a universal curve appropriate for dynamical scaling at a metal-insulator transition.

Pressure-induced residual resistivity anomaly in CeCu_5Au

The electrical resistivity of the magnetically ordered CeCu_5Au has been investigated under pressure up to 8.5 GPa. In the magnetically ordered region (p<3.4 GPa) the residual resistivity rho_0 shows a pronounced maximum as a function of pressure. Even in the nonmagnetic region rho_0 decreases monotonically by more than a factor of three. These two effects can be qualitatively explained in terms of the interplay of pressure, magnetism and disorder in a strongly correlated electron system with weak disorder.

Conductance oscillations in mesoscopic rings: microscopic versus macroscopic picture

The phase of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in mesoscopic metal rings in the presence of a magnetic field can be modulated by application of a DC-bias current I_DC. We address the question of how a variation of I_DC and hence of the microscopic phases of the electronic wave functions results in the macroscopic phase of the conductance oscillations. Whereas the first one can be varied continuously the latter has to be quantized for a ring in two-wire configuration by virtue of the Onsager symmetry relations. We observe a correlation between a phase flip by +/- pi and the amplitude of the oscillations.

Anomalous temperature dependence of magnetic quantum oscillations in CeBiPt

Shubnikov--de Haas (SdH) and Hall-effect measurements of CeBiPt and LaBiPt reveal the presence of simple and very small Fermi surfaces with hole-like charge carriers for both semimetals. In the magnetic material, CeBiPt, we observe a strong temperature dependence of the SdH frequency. This highly unusual effect might be connected with an internal exchange field within the material and a strongly spin-dependent scattering of the charge carriers.
