Efficient MCMC Sampling for Bayesian Matrix Factorization by Breaking Posterior Symmetries

Bayesian low-rank matrix factorization techniques have become an essential tool for relational data analysis and matrix completion. A standard approach is to assign zero-mean Gaussian priors on the columns or rows of factor matrices to create a conjugate system. This choice of prior leads to simple implementations; however it also causes symmetries in the posterior distribution that can severely reduce the efficiency of Markov-chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) sampling approaches. In this paper, we propose a simple modification to the prior choice that provably breaks these symmetries and maintains/improves accuracy. Specifically, we provide conditions that the Gaussian prior mean and covariance must satisfy so the posterior does not exhibit invariances that yield sampling difficulties. For example, we show that using non-zero linearly independent prior means significantly lowers the autocorrelation of MCMC samples, and can also lead to lower reconstruction errors.

Data-Driven Failure Prediction in Brittle Materials: A Phase-Field Based Machine Learning Framework

Failure in brittle materials led by the evolution of micro- to macro-cracks under repetitive or increasing loads is often catastrophic with no significant plasticity to advert the onset of fracture. Early failure detection with respective location are utterly important features in any practical application, both of which can be effectively addressed using artificial intelligence. In this paper, we develop a supervised machine learning (ML) framework to predict failure in an isothermal, linear elastic and isotropic phase-field model for damage and fatigue of brittle materials. Time-series data of the phase-field model is extracted from virtual sensing nodes at different locations of the geometry. A pattern recognition scheme is introduced to represent time-series data/sensor nodes responses as a pattern with a corresponding label, integrated with ML algorithms, used for damage classification with identified patterns. We perform an uncertainty analysis by superposing random noise to the time-series data to assess the robustness of the framework with noise-polluted data. Results indicate that the proposed framework is capable of predicting failure with acceptable accuracy even in the presence of high noise levels. The findings demonstrate satisfactory performance of the supervised ML framework, and the applicability of artificial intelligence and ML to a practical engineering problem, i.,e, data-driven failure prediction in brittle materials.

Contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Country'S H-Index

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country's scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country's H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill sub-indices positively contribute to higher H-index but the effect of ICT access on country's H-index is not clear.

Does it Matter Which Citation Tool is Used to Compare the h-index of a Group of Highly Cited Researchers?

h-index retrieved by citation indexes (Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science) is used to measure the scientific performance and the research impact studies based on the number of publications and citations of a scientist. It also is easily available and may be used for performance measures of scientists, and for recruitment decisions. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference between the outputs and results from these three citation databases namely Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science based upon the h-index of a group of highly cited researchers (Nobel Prize winner scientist). The purposive sampling method was adopted to collect the required data. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the h-index between three citation indexes of Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science; the Google scholar h-index was more than the h-index in two other databases. It was also concluded that there is a significant positive relationship between h-indices based on Google scholar and Scopus. The citation indexes of Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science may be useful for evaluating h-index of scientists but they have some limitations as well.

Using Blogs to Promote Writing Skill in ESL Classroom

This study provides details on the motivational factors for using blogs as an essential tool to promote students writing skills in ESL classrooms. The study aims to discuss how using blogs may be integrated into classroom activities to promote students writing skills as well as polishing their skills. It would also illustrate the features offered in blogs as well as the motivational essence that is attached to the blogs. To achieve the aim of the study, a semi-structured interview protocol was used to collect the required qualitative data. The findings of the study would serve as an insistent reminder that the blogs which have been clearly underlined in the curriculum should be re-orchestrated more effectively again by the teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL).

Using Visual Aids as a Motivational Tool in Enhancing Students Interest in Reading Literary Texts

This study aims to investigate the teachers perceptions on the use of visual aids (e.g., animation videos, pictures, films and projectors) as a motivational tool in enhancing students interest in reading literary texts. To achieve the aim of the study, the mixed-method approach was used to collect the required data. Therefore, 52 English teachers from seven national secondary schools in Kapit, Sarawak, Malaysia were selected. Five of the respondents were also randomly selected for the interview. The analysis of the data indicated that the majority of the teachers had positive perceptions of the use of visual aids. The use of visual aids enable the teachers to engage their students closely with the literary texts despite of being able to facilitate students of different English proficiency level in reading the texts with interest. This aspect is vital as literature helps to generate students creative and critical thinking skills. Although the teachers had positive attitudes towards the use of visual aids, the study suggests that it will be more interesting and precise if it includes students perceptions as well.

Does Criticisms Overcome the Praises of Journal Impact Factor?

Journal impact factor (IF) as a gauge of influence and impact of a particular journal comparing with other journals in the same area of research, reports the mean number of citations to the published articles in particular journal. Although, IF attracts more attention and being used more frequently than other measures, it has been subjected to criticisms, which overcome the advantages of IF. Critically, extensive use of IF may result in destroying editorial and researchers behaviour, which could compromise the quality of scientific articles. Therefore, it is the time of the timeliness and importance of a new invention of journal ranking techniques beyond the journal impact factor.

A Comparison between Two Main Academic Literature Collections: Web of Science and Scopus Databases

Nowadays, the worlds scientific community has been publishing an enormous number of papers in different scientific fields. In such environment, it is essential to know which databases are equally efficient and objective for literature searches. It seems that two most extensive databases are Web of Science and Scopus. Besides searching the literature, these two databases used to rank journals in terms of their productivity and the total citations received to indicate the journals impact, prestige or influence. This article attempts to provide a comprehensive comparison of these databases to answer frequent questions which researchers ask, such as: How Web of Science and Scopus are different? In which aspects these two databases are similar? Or, if the researchers are forced to choose one of them, which one should they prefer? For answering these questions, these two databases will be compared based on their qualitative and quantitative characteristics.

On the gravitational coupling of Hadamard states

We study the constraints imposed by the Hadamard condition on the two-point function of local states of a scalar quantum field conformally coupled to a gravitational background. We propose a method to assign a stress tensor to the state-dependent part of the two point function which arises as a conserved tensor with an anomalous trace. To characterize the local Hadamard states of physical interest we apply a super-selection rule relating this quantum stress tensor to the matter stress tensor of a conformal invariant gravitational model subject to a conformal symmetry breaking term. This implies that the determination of a Hadamard state may be considered as an integral part of its gravitational coupling via the back-reaction effect.

Conformal Invariance, Anomalous Gravitational Coupling and Derivation of a Particle Concept

We study a gravitational model whose vacuum sector is invariant under conformal transformations. In this model we investigate the anomalous gravitational coupling of the large-scale matter. In this kind of coupling the large-sale matter is taken to couple to a metric which is different but conformally related to the metric appearing explicitly in the vacuum sector. The effect of the conformal symmetry breaking of the large-scale matter would lead in general to a variable strength of the anomalous gravitational coupling. This feature is used to derive a relativistic particle concept which shares the essential dynamical characteristics of the particle concept used in the causal interpretation of quantum mechanics with respect to the form of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The basic aspect of this result is that it relates the variable strength of the anomalous gravitational coupling of the large-scale matter to the appearance of a term similar to a quantum potential term. Some of the general characteristics of the corresponding pilot wave are discussed.

Evaporating Black Holes and Long Range Scaling

For an effective treatment of the evaporation process of a large black hole the problem concerning the role played by the fluctuations of the (vacuum) stress tensor close to the horizon is addressed. We present arguments which establish a principal relationship between the outward fluctuations of the stress tensor close to the horizon and quantities describing the onset of the evaporation process. This suggest that the evaporation process may be described by a fluctuation-dissipation theorem relating the noise of the horizon to the black hole evaporation rate.

Conformal Invariance and Wave-Particle Duality

We present a conformally invariant generalized form of the free particle action by connecting the wave and particle aspects through gravity. Conformal invariance breaking is introduced by choosing a particular configurat$ of dynamical variables. This leads to the geometrization of the quantum aspects of matter.

Vacuum-Structure and a Relativistic Pilot Wave

We study a model for analyzing the effect of a principal violation of the Lorentz-invariance on the structure of vacuum. The model is based on the divergence theory developed by Salehi (1997). It is shown that the divergence theory can be used to model an ensemble of particles. The ensemble is characterized by the condition that its members are basically at rest in the rest frame of a preferred inertial observer in vacuum. In this way we find a direct dynamical interplay between a particle and its associated ensemble. We show that this effect can be understood in terms of the interaction of a particle with a relativistic pilot wave through an associated quantum potential.

Conformal Invariance and Quantum Aspects of Matter

The vacuum sector of the Brans-Dicke theory is studied from the viewpoint of a non-conformally invariant gravitational model. We show that, this theory can be conformally symmetrized using an appropriate conformal transformation. The resulting theory allows a particle interpretation, and suggests that the quantum aspects of matter may be geometrized.

Translocality and a Duality Principle in Generally Covariant Quantum Field Theory

It is argued that the formal rules of correspondence between local observation procedures and observables do not exhaust the entire physical content of generally covariant quantum field theory. This result is obtained by expressing the distinguishing features of the local kinematical structure of quantum field theory in the generally covariant context in terms of a translocal structure which carries the totality of the nonlocal kinematical informations in a local region. This gives rise to a duality principle at the dynamical level which emphasizes the significance of the underlying translocal structure for modelling a minimal algebra around a given point. We discuss the emergence of classical properties from this point of view.

Duality and the cosmological constant

A dynamical theory is studied in which a scalar field $ϕ$ in Einstein- Minkowski space is coupled to the four-velocity $N_μ$ of a preferred inertial observer in that space. As a consistent requirement on this coupling we study a principle of duality invariance of the dynamical mass- term of $ϕ$ at some universal length in the small-distance regime. In the large-distance regime duality breaking can be introduced by giving a back- ground value to $ϕ$ and a back-ground direction to $N_μ$. It is shown that, in an appropriate approximation, duality breaking can be related to the emergence of a characteristic phase in which the condensation of the ground state allows massive excitations with a characteristic scale of squared mass which agrees with present observational bound for the cosmological constant.

Evaporating Black Holes And An Entropic Scale-Hierarchy

It is argued that a characteristic length may be associated with the entropic state of a spherically symmetric black hole in the cosmological context. This length is much smaller than the Schwarzschild-radius of a black hole and may act as a regulator of arbitrarily high frequencies apparently entering the usual derivation of Hawking's radiation.
