Justification of the Lugiato-Lefever model from a damped driven $ϕ^4$ equation

The Lugiato-Lefever equation is a damped and driven version of the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is a mathematical model describing complex phenomena in dissipative and nonlinear optical cavities. Within the last two decades, the equation has gained a wide attention as it becomes the basic model describing optical frequency combs. Recent works derive the Lugiato-Lefever equation from a class of damped driven $ϕ^4$ equations closed to resonance. In this paper, we provide a justification of the envelope approximation. From the analysis point of view, the result is novel and non-trivial as the drive yields a perturbation term that is not square integrable. The main approach proposed in this work is to decompose the solutions into a combination of the background and the integrable component. This paper is the first part of a two-manuscript series.

Theory and Numerical Modelling of Parity-Time Symmetric Structures in Photonics: Introduction and Grating Structures in One Dimension

A class of structures based on PT PT-symmetric Bragg gratings in the presence of both gain and loss is studied. The basic concepts and properties of parity and time reversal in one-dimensional structures that possess idealised material properties are given. The impact of realistic material properties on the behaviour of these devices is then investigated. Further extension to include material non-linearity is used to study an innovative all-optical memory device.

Homoclinic snaking in the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation

We consider the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic and quintic nonlinearity, obtained from discretizing the spatial derivatives of the Swift-Hohenberg equation using central finite differences. We investigate the discretization effect on the bifurcation behavior, where we identify three regions of the coupling parameter, i.e., strong, weak, and intermediate coupling. Within the regions, the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation behaves either similarly or differently from the continuum limit. In the intermediate coupling region, multiple Maxwell points can occur for the periodic solutions and may cause irregular snaking and isolas. Numerical continuation is used to obtain and analyze localised and periodic solutions for each case. Theoretical analysis for the snaking and stability of the corresponding solutions is provided in the weak coupling region.

On nonlocal reductions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrodinger equation on symmetric spaces

The aim of this paper is to develop the inverse scattering transform (IST) for multi-component generalisations of nonlocal reductions of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation with PT-symmetry related to symmetric spaces. This includes: the spectral properties of the associated Lax operator, Jost function, the scattering matrix and the minimal set of scattering data, the fundamental analytic solutions. As main examples, we use the Manakov vector Schrödinger equation (related to A.III-symmetric spaces) and the multi-component NLS (MNLS) equations of Kullish-Sklyanin type (related to BD.I-symmetric spaces). Furthermore, the 1- and 2-soliton solutions are obtained by using an appropriate modification of the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method. It is shown, that the MNLS equations of these types allow both regular and singular soliton configurations. Finally, we present here different examples of 1- and 2-soliton solutions for both types of models, subject to different reductions.

Nonlocal reductions of the Ablowitz-Ladik equation

The purpose of the present paper is to develop the inverse scattering transform for the nonlocal semi-discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation (known as Ablowitz-Ladik equation) with PT-symmetry. This includes: the eigenfunctions (Jost solutions) of the associated Lax pair, the scattering data and the fundamental analytic solutions. In addition, the paper studies the spectral properties of the associated discrete Lax operator. Based on the formulated (additive) Riemann-Hilbert problem, the 1- and 2-soliton solutions for the nonlocal Ablowitz-Ladik equation are derived. Finally, the completeness relation for the associated Jost solutions is proved. Based on this, the expansion formula over the complete set of Jost solutions is derived. This will allow one to interpret the inverse scattering transform as a generalised Fourier transform.

Black holes will break up solitons and white holes may destroy them

We consider a quantum analogue of black holes and white holes using Bose-Einstein condensates. The model is described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a 'stream flow' potential, that induces a spatial translation to standing waves. We then mainly consider the dynamics of dark solitons in a black hole or white hole flow analogue and their interactions with the event horizon. A reduced equation describing the position of the dark solitons was obtained using variational method. Through numerical computations and comparisons with the analytical approximation we show that solitons can pass through black hole horizons even though they will break up into several solitons after the collision. In the interaction with a white hole horizon, we show that solitons either pass through the horizon or will be destroyed by it.

Bright solitons in a PT-symmetric chain of dimers

We study the existence and stability of fundamental bright discrete solitons in a parity-time (PT)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers, that is modelled by linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gain and loss terms. We use a perturbation theory for small coupling between the lattices to perform the analysis, which is then confirmed by numerical calculations. Such analysis is based on the concept of the so-called anti-continuum limit approach. We consider the fundamental onsite and intersite bright solitons. Each solution has symmetric and antisymmetric configurations between the arms. The stability of the solutions is then determined by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. We obtain that both symmetric and antisymmetric onsite mode can be stable for small coupling, on the contrary of the reported continuum limit where the antisymmetric solutions are always unstable. The instability is either due to the internal modes crossing the origin or the appearance of a quartet of complex eigenvalues. In general, the gain-loss term can be considered parasitic as it reduces the stability region of the onsite solitons. Additionally, we analyse the dynamic behaviour of the onsite and intersite solitons when unstable, where typically it is either in the form of travelling solitons or soliton blow-ups.

Impact of Dispersive and Saturable Gain/Loss on Bistability of Nonlinear Parity-Time Bragg Gratings

We report on the impact of realistic gain and loss models on the bistable operation of nonlinear parity-time Bragg gratings. In our model we include both dispersive and saturable gain and show that levels of gain/loss saturation can have significant impact on the bistable operation of a nonlinear PT Bragg grating based on GaAs material. The hysteresis of the nonlinear PT Bragg grating is analyzed for different levels of gain and loss and different saturation levels. We show that high saturation levels can improve the nonlinear operation by reducing the intensity at which the bistability occurs. However when the saturation intensity is low, saturation inhibits the PT characteristics of the grating.

Fluxon analogues and dark solitons in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between the condensates.

Pinned fluxons in a Josephson junction with a finite-length inhomogeneity

We consider a Josephson junction system installed with a finite length inhomogeneity, either of microresistor or of microresonator type. The system can be modelled by a sine-Gordon equation with a piecewise-constant function to represent the varying Josephson tunneling critical current. The existence of pinned fluxons depends on the length of the inhomogeneity, the variation in the Josephson tunneling critical current and the applied bias current. We establish that a system may either not be able to sustain a pinned fluxon, or - for instance by varying the length of the inhomogeneity - may exhibit various different types of pinned fluxons. Our stability analysis shows that changes of stability can only occur at critical points of the length of the inhomogeneity as a function of the (Hamiltonian) energy density inside the inhomogeneity - a relation we determine explicitly. In combination with continuation arguments and Sturm-Liouville theory, we determine the stability of all constructed pinned fluxons. It follows that if a given system is able to sustain at least one pinned fluxon, there is exactly one stable pinned fluxon, i.e. the system selects one unique stable pinned configuration. Moreover, it is shown that both for microresistors and microresonators this stable pinned configuration may be non-monotonic - something which is not possible in the homogeneous case. Finally, it is shown that results in the literature on localised inhomogeneities can be recovered as limits of our results on microresonators.

Breathing modes of long Josephson junctions with phase-shifts

We consider a spatially inhomogeneous sine-Gordon equation with a time-periodic drive, modeling a microwave driven long Josephson junction with phase-shifts. Under appropriate conditions, Josephson junctions with phase-shifts can have a spatially nonuniform ground state. In recent reports, it is experimentally shown that a microwave drive can be used to measure the eigenfrequency of a junction's ground state. Such a microwave spectroscopy is based on the observation that when the frequency of the applied microwave is in the vicinity of the natural frequency of the ground state, the junction can switch to a resistive state, characterized by a non-zero junction voltage. It was conjectured that the process is analogous to the resonant phenomenon in a simple pendulum motion driven by a time periodic external force. In the case of long junctions with phase-shifts, it would be a resonance between the internal breathing mode of the ground state and the microwave field. Nonetheless, it was also reported that the microwave power needed to switch the junction into a resistive state depends on the magnitude of the eigenfrequency to be measured. Using multiple scale expansions, we show here that an infinitely long Josephson junction with phase-shifts cannot be switched to a resistive state by microwave field with frequency close to the system's eigenfrequency, provided that the applied microwave amplitude is small enough, which confirms the experimental observations. It is because higher harmonics with frequencies in the continuous spectrum are excited, in the form of continuous wave radiation. The presence of applied microwaves balances the nonlinear damping, creating a stable breather mode oscillation. We confirm our analytical results numerically.

Existence and stability analysis of finite 0-$π$-0 Josephson junctions

We investigate analytically and numerically a Josephson junction on finite domain with two $π$-discontinuity points characterized by a jump of $π$ in the phase difference of the junction, i.e. a 0-$π$-0 Josephson junction. The system is described by a modified sine-Gordon equation. We show that there is an instability region in which semifluxons will be spontaneously generated. Using a Hamiltonian energy characterization, it is shown how the existence of static semifluxons depends on the length of the junction, the facet length, and the applied bias current. The critical eigenvalue of the semifluxons is discussed as well. Numerical simulations are presented, accompanying our analytical results.
