First-principles calculation of H vibrational excitations at a dislocation core of Pd

Palladium is an ideal system for understanding the behavior of hydrogen in metals. In Pd, H is located both in octahedral sites and in dislocation cores, which act as nanoscale H traps and form Cottrell atmospheres. Adjacent to a dislocation core, H experiences the largest possible distortion in alpha-Pd. Ab initio density-functional theory computes the potential energy for a hydrogen in an octahedral site in alpha-Pd and in a trap site at the core of a partial of an edge dislocation. The Pd partial dislocation core changes the environment for H, distorting the H-Pd bonding which changes the local potential, vibrational spectra, and inelastic form factor for an isolated H atom. The decrease in excitation energy is consistent with experiments, and the calculations predict distortions to the H wavefunction.

Theory of Rabi interaction between an infrared-active phonon and cavity-resonant modes

We present the theory of interaction between a polar vibration in a semiconductor and an electromagnetic mode of a surrounding cavity. Tuning the cavity frequency near the transverse optical phonon frequency couples the phonon-induced polarization field within the dielectric and the electromagnetic field in the cavity. Depending on engineering parameters, we predict that this cavity quantum electrodynamic interaction may reach the strong coupling regime. The resonances of the system are in the terahertz spectral region, and while spectroscopic measurements are a possible route for the detection of such a system, we emphasize the possibility of measuring the Rabi oscillation directly in the time domain with femtosecond optical pulses.

Two-phonon infrared processes in semiconductors

We report our detailed calculation of the infrared spectra of GaAs and GaP from first principles, and similar ongoing efforts for diamond-type spectra, which have recently been calculated.

Anharmonic effects on infrared spectra of GaAs and GaP

With a study of bulk GaAs and GaP, we report detailed infrared spectra and their temperature dependence from first principles. Fine features and low-temperature trends in the predicted response are confirmed by experiment. The spectra are calculated from the far-infrared through twice the frequency of the zone-center optical phonon. The treatment relies on recent developments in the theories of dielectric polarization and the phonon-phonon interaction.

Dynamical Matrices and Interatomic-Force Constants from Wave-Commensurate Supercells

We apply standard, first-principles calculations to a complete treatment of lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation. The algorithm makes use of the straightforward ``frozen-phonon'' approach to the calculation of vibrational spectra and addresses some limitations of the method. Our prescription's validity is independent of crystal structure. It treats polar crystals in a general way, and it incorporates interatomic-force constants reaching beyond the supercell that is considered. For a range of materials, phonon dispersion exhibits the close agreement with experiment that is now characteristic of first-principles schemes. Results for graphite, Si and GaAs are presented.
