Gapless quantum spin liquid in a honeycomb $Γ$ magnet

A family of spin-orbit coupled honeycomb Mott insulators offers a playground to search for quantum spin liquids (QSLs) via bond-dependent interactions. In candidate materials, a symmetric off-diagonal $Γ$ term, close cousin of Kitaev interaction, has emerged as another source of frustration that is essential for complete understanding of these systems. However, the ground state of honeycomb $Γ$ model remains elusive, with a suggested zigzag magnetic order. Here we attempt to resolve the puzzle by perturbing the $Γ$ region with a staggered Heisenberg interaction which favours the zigzag ordering. Despite such favour, we find a wide disordered region inclusive of the $Γ$ limit in the phase diagram. Further, this phase exhibits a vanishing energy gap, a collapse of excitation spectrum, and a logarithmic entanglement entropy scaling on long cylinders, indicating a gapless QSL. Other quantities such as plaquette-plaquette correlation are also discussed.

Magnetic Anisotropy in Spin-3/2 with Heavy Ligand in Honeycomb Mott Insulators: Application to CrI$_3$

Ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional CrI$_3$ has generated a lot of excitement, and it was recently proposed that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in Iodine may generate bond-dependent spin interactions leading to magnetic anisotropy. Here we derive a microscopic spin model of S=3/2 on transition metals surrounded by heavy ligands in honeycomb Mott insulators using a strong-coupling perturbation theory. For ideal octahedra we find Heisenberg and Kitaev interactions, which favor the magnetic moment along the cubic axis via quantum fluctuations. When a slight trigonal distortion of the octahedra is present together with the SOC, three additional interactions arise, comprised of the off-diagonal symmetric $Γ$ and $Γ^\prime$, and single-ion anisotropy. The resulting magnetic anisotropy pins the moment perpendicular to the honeycomb plane as observed in a single-layer of CrI$_3$, suggesting the significance of SOC and trigonal distortion in understanding magnetism of two dimensional Mott insulators. Comparison to the spin-orbit coupled $J_{\rm eff}$= 1/2 and S=1 models is also presented.

Characterizing spin-one Kitaev quantum spin liquids

Material realizations of the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions with $S$=1/2 local moments have vitalized the research in quantum spin liquids. Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogues of the Kitaev interactions may also occur in a number of materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to the celebrated $S$=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, the higher-spin Kitaev models are not exactly solvable. Hence, the existence of quantum spin liquids in these systems remains an outstanding question. In this work, we use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to numerically investigate the $S$=1 Kitaev model with both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions. Using results on a cylindrical geometry with various circumferences, we conclude that the ground state of the $S$=1 Kitaev model is a quantum spin liquid with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge structure. We also put a bound on the excitation gap, which turns out to be quite small. The magnetic field responses for the FM and AFM models are similar to those of the $S$=1/2 counterparts. In particular, in the AFM $S$=1 model, a gapless quantum liquid state emerges in an intermediate window of magnetic field strength, before the system enters a trivial polarized state.

Classical spin order near antiferromagnetic Kitaev point in the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma chain

A minimal Kitaev-Gamma model has been recently investigated to understand various Kitaev systems. In the one-dimensional Kitaev-Gamma chain, an emergent SU(2)$_1$ phase and a rank-1 spin ordered phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_4$ symmetry breaking were identified using non-Abelian bosonization and numerical techniques. However, puzzles near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region with finite Gamma interaction remained unresolved. Here we focus on this parameter region and find that there are two new phases, namely, a rank-1 ordered phase with an $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and a peculiar Kitaev phase. Remarkably, the $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking corresponds to the classical magnetic order, but appears in a region very close to the antiferromagnetic Kitaev point where the quantum fluctuations are presumably very strong. In addition, a two-step symmetry breaking $O_h\rightarrow D_{3d}\rightarrow D_3$ is numerically observed as the length scale is increased: At short and intermediate length scales, the system behaves as having a rank-2 spin nematic order with $O_h\rightarrow D_{3d}$ symmetry breaking; and at long distances, time reversal symmetry is further broken leading to the $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking. Finally, there is no numerical signature of spin orderings nor Luttinger liquid behaviors in the Kitaev phase whose nature is worth further studies.

Optical magnons with dominant bond-directional exchange interactions in a honeycomb lattice iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$

We have used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal optical magnons in a honeycomb lattice iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. The spectrum in the energy region 20-25 meV exhibits momentum dependence, of which energy is highest at the location of the magnetic Bragg peak, ($\textit{h}, \textit{k}$) = ($\pm$0.32, 0), and lowered toward (0, 0) and ($\pm$1, 0). We compare our data with a linear spin-wave theory based on a generic nearest-neighbor spin model. We find that a dominant bond-directional Kitaev interaction of order 20 meV is required to explain the energy scale observed in our study. The observed excitations are understood as stemming from optical magnon modes whose intensity is modulated by a structure factor, resulting in the apparent momentum dependence. We also observed diffuse magnetic scattering arising from the short-range magnetic correlation well above $\textit{T}_{N}$. In contrast to Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, this diffuse scattering lacks the $C_3$ rotational symmetry of the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that the bond anisotropy is far from negligible in $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$.

Shadowed triplet pairings in Hund's metals with spin-orbit coupling

Hund's coupling in multiorbital systems allows for the possibility of even-parity orbital-antisymmetric spin-triplet pairing, which can be stabilized by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). While this pairing expressed in the orbital basis is uniform and spin-triplet, it appears in the band basis as a pseudospin-singlet, with the momentum dependence determined by the SOC and the underlying triplet character remaining in the form of interband pairing active away from the Fermi energy. Here, we examine the role of momentum-dependent SOC in generating nontrivial pairing symmetries, as well as the hidden triplet nature associated with this interorbital pairing, which we dub a "shadowed triplet". Applying this concept to Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, we first derive several forms of SOC with $d$-wave form factors from a microscopic model, and subsequently we show that for a range of SOC parameters, a pairing state with $s+id_{xy}$ symmetry can be stabilized. Such a pairing state is distinct from pure spin-singlet and -triplet pairings due to its unique character of pseudospin-energy locking. We discuss experimental probes to differentiate the shadowed triplet pairing from conventional pseudospin-triplet and -singlet pairings.

Magnetoresistance oscillation study of the half-quantum vortex in doubly connected mesoscopic superconducting cylinders of Sr2RuO4

The observation of the highly unusual half-quantum vortex (HQV) in a single crystalline superconductor excludes unequivocally the spin-singlet symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. HQVs were observed previously in mesoscopic samples of Sr2RuO4 in cantilever torque magnetometry measurements, thus providing direct evidence for spin-triplet pairing in the material. In addition, it raised important questions on HQV, including its stability and dynamics. These issues have remained largely unexplored, in particular, experimentally. We report in this paper the detection of HQVs in mesoscopic, doubly connected cylinders of single-crystalline Sr2RuO4 of a mesoscopic size and the examination of the effect of the in-plane magnetic field needed for the observation of the HQV by magnetoresistance (MR) oscillations measurements. Several distinct features found in our data, especially a dip and secondary peaks in the MR oscillations seen only in the presence of a sufficiently large in-plane magnetic field as well as a large measurement current, are linked to the formation of the HQV fluxoid state in and crossing of an Abrikosov HQV through the sample. The conclusion is drawn from the analysis of our data using a model of thermally activated vortex crossing overcoming a free-energy barrier which is modulated by the applied magnetic flux enclosed in the cylinder as well as the measurement current. Evidence for the trapping of an HQV fluxoid state in the sample was also found. Our observation of the HQV in mesoscopic Sr2RuO4 provided not only additional evidence for spin-triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 but also insights into the physics of HQV, including its spontaneous spin polarization, stability, and dynamics. Our study also revealed a possible effect of the measurement current on the magnitude of the spontaneous spin polarization associated with the HQV.

Emergence of a nematic paramagnet via quantum order-by-disorder and pseudo-Goldstone modes in Kitaev magnets

The appearance of nontrivial phases in Kitaev materials exposed to an external magnetic field has recently been a subject of intensive studies. Here, we elucidate the relation between the field-induced ground states of the classical and quantum spin models proposed for such materials, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and the linear spin wave theory (LSWT). We consider the $K ΓΓ'$ model, where $Γ$ and $Γ'$ are off-diagonal spin exchanges on top of the dominant Kitaev interaction $K$. Focusing on the magnetic field along the $[111]$ direction, we explain the origin of the nematic paramagnet, which breaks the lattice-rotational symmetry and exists in an extended window of magnetic field, in the quantum model. This phenomenon can be understood as the effect of quantum order-by-disorder in the frustrated ferromagnet with a continuous manifold of degenerate ground states discovered in the corresponding classical model. We compute the dynamical spin structure factors using a matrix operator based time evolution and compare them with the predictions from LSWT. We, thus, provide predictions for future inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Kitaev materials in an external magnetic field along the $[111]$ direction. In particular, the nematic paramagnet exhibits a characteristic pseudo-Goldstone mode which results from the lifting of a continuous degeneracy via quantum fluctuations.

Distinct reduction of Knight shift in superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under uniaxial strain

Shortly after the discovery of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, spin-triplet pairing was proposed and further corroborated by a constant Knight shift ($K$) across the transition temperature (T$_c$). However, a recent experiment observed a drop in $K$ at T$_c$ which becomes larger under uniaxial strain, ruling out several spin-triplet scenarios. Here we show that inter-orbital spin-triplet pairing features a d-vector that rotates when uniaxial strain is applied, leading to a larger drop in the spin polarization perpendicular to the strain direction, distinct from spin-singlet pairing. We propose that anisotropic spin polarization under strain will ultimately differentiate triplet vs.~singlet pairing.

The Heart of Entanglement: Chiral, Nematic, and Incommensurate Phases in the Kitaev-Gamma Ladder in a Field

The bond-dependent Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice with anyonic excitations has recently attracted considerable attention. However, in solid state materials other spin interactions are present, and among such additional interactions, the off-diagonal symmetric Gamma interaction, another type of bond-dependent term, has been particularly challenging to fully understand. A minimal Kitaev-Gamma (KG) model has been investigated by various numerical techniques under a magnetic field, but definite conclusions about field-induced spin liquids remain elusive and one reason may lie in the limited sizes of the two-dimensional geometry it is possible to access numerically. We therefore focus on the KG model defined on a two-leg ladder which is much more amenable to a complete study, and determine the entire phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field along [111]-direction. Due to the competition between the interactions and the field, an extremely rich phase diagram emerges with fifteen distinct phases. Focusing near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region, we identify nine different phases solely within this region: several incommensurate magnetically ordered phases, spin nematic, and two chiral phases with enhanced entanglement. Of particular interest is a highly entangled phase with staggered chirality with zero-net flux occurring at intermediate field, which along with its companion phases outline a heart-shaped region of high entanglement, the heart of entanglement. We compare our results for the ladder with a C3 symmetric cluster of the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, and offer insights into possible spin liquids in the two-dimensional limit.

Honeycomb-Lattice Mott insulator on Tantalum Disulphide

Effects of electron many-body interactions amplify in an electronic system with a narrow bandwidth opening a way to exotic physics. A narrow band in a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice is particularly intriguing as combined with Dirac bands and topological properties but the material realization of a strongly interacting honeycomb lattice described by the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model has not been identified. Here we report a novel approach to realize a 2D honeycomb-lattice narrow-band system with strongly interacting 5$d$ electrons. We engineer a well-known triangular lattice 2D Mott insulator 1T-TaS$_2$ into a honeycomb lattice utilizing an adsorbate superstructure. Potassium (K) adatoms at an optimum coverage deplete one-third of the unpaired $d$ electrons and the remaining electrons form a honeycomb lattice with a very small hopping. Ab initio calculations show extremely narrow Z$_2$ topological bands mimicking the Kane-Mele model. Electron spectroscopy detects an order of magnitude bigger charge gap confirming the substantial electron correlation as confirmed by dynamical mean field theory. It could be the first artificial Mott insulator with a finite spin Chern number.

Testing Ising Topological Order in $α$-RuCl$_3$ Under In-Plane Magnetic Fields

Material realization of the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid phase - an example of Ising topological order (ITO) - has been the subject of intense research in recent years. The $4d$ honeycomb Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ has emerged as a leading candidate, as it enters a field-induced magnetically disordered state where a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ was reported. Further, a recent report of a sign change in the quantized $κ_{xy}$ across a certain crystallographic direction is strong evidence for a topological phase transition between two ITOs with opposite Chern numbers. Although this is a fascinating result, independent verification remains elusive, and one may ask if there is a thermodynamic quantity sensitive to the phase transition. Here we propose that the magnetotropic coefficient $k$ under in-plane magnetic fields would serve such a purpose. We report a singular feature in $k$ that indicates a topological phase transition across the $\hat{b}$-axis where ITO is prohibited by a $C_2$ symmetry. If the transition in $α$-RuCl$_3$ is indeed a direct transition between ITOs, then this feature in $k$ should be observable.

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma chain and emergent SU(2) symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra ``$Γ$-term", using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)$_1$ predictions. A modified nonabelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent ``partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an $O_h\rightarrow D_4$ spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Field-Driven Gapless Spin Liquid in the Spin-1 Kitaev Honeycomb Model

Recent proposals for spin-1 Kitaev materials, such as honeycomb Ni oxides with heavy elements of Bi and Sb, have shown that these compounds naturally give rise to antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. Conceptual interest in such AFM Kitaev systems has been sparked by the observation of a transition to a gapless $U(1)$ spin liquid at intermediate field strengths in the AFM spin-1/2 Kitaev model. However, all hitherto known spin-1/2 Kitaev materials exhibit ferromagnetic bond-directional exchanges. Here we discuss the physics of the spin-1 Kitaev model in a magnetic field and show, by extensive numerical analysis, that for AFM couplings it exhibits an extended gapless quantum spin liquid at intermediate field strengths. The close analogy to its spin-1/2 counterpart suggests that this gapless spin liquid is a $U(1)$ spin liquid with a neutral Fermi surface, that gives rise to enhanced thermal transport signatures.

Counterroating incommensurate magnetic order and strong quantum fluctuations in the honeycomb layers of $\rm NaNi_2BiO_6$

We report the magnetic structure and electronic properties of the honeycomb antiferromagnet $\rm NaNi_2BiO_{5.66}$. We find magnetic order with moments along the $c$ axis for temperatures below $T_{c1}=6.3(1)\>{\rm K}$ and then in the honeycomb plane for $T < T_{c2}=4.8(1)\>{\rm K}$ with a counterrotating pattern and an ordering wave vector ${\bf q}=(\frac{1}{3},\> \frac{1}{3},\> 0.15(1))$. Density functional theory and electron spin resonance indicate this is high-spin Ni$^{3+}$ magnetism near a high to low spin transition. The ordering wave vector, in-plane magnetic correlations, missing entropy, spin state, and superexchange pathways are all consistent with bond-dependent Kitaev-$Γ$-Heisenberg exchange interactions in $\rm NaNi_2BiO_{6-δ}$.

Odd-Parity Superconductivity Driven by Octahedra Rotations in Iridium Oxides

Iridium oxides have provided a playground to study novel phases originating from spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions. Among them, the d-wave singlet superconductor was proposed for electron-doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, containing two Ir atoms in a unit cell due to the staggered rotation of oxygen octahedra about the c-axis. It was also noted that such oxygen octahedra rotation affects electronic transports. Here we study the role of octahedra tilting away from the c-axis, in determining superconducting pairing symmetry. We show that the octahedra tilting changes the large Fermi surface to a Dirac point, which strongly suppresses the conventional d-wave pairing. Furthermore, it also promotes effective spin-triplet interactions in the strong Hubbard interaction limit, leading to a transition from the even-parity to odd-parity superconducting phase. Thus, tuning octahedra distortions can be used as a tool to engineer a spin triplet superconductor in strongly correlated systems with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Microscopic mechanism for higher-spin Kitaev model

The spin S=$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention, since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions and strong Hund's coupling in transition metal cations. The S=1 Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions are generated from superexchange paths. Taking into account the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg term from direct-exchange paths, the Kitaev interaction dominates the physics of S=1 system. Using exact diagonalization technique, we show a finite regime of S=1 spin liquid in the presence of the Heisenberg interaction. Candidate materials are proposed, and generalization to higher spins is discussed.

Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Elementary excitations in highly entangled states such as quantum spin liquids may exhibit exotic statistics, different from those obeyed by fundamental bosons and fermions. Excitations called non-Abelian anyons are predicted to exist in a Kitaev spin liquid - the ground state of an exactly solvable model proposed by Kitaev almost a decade ago. A smoking-gun signature of such non-Abelian anyons, namely a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity, was recently reported in $α$-RuCl$_3$. While fascinating, a microscopic theory for this phenomenon in $α$-RuCl$_3$ remains elusive because the pure Kitaev phase cannot capture these anyons appearing in an intermediate magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic theory of the Kitaev spin liquid emerging between the low- and high-field states. Essential to this result is an antiferromagnetic off-diagonal symmetric interaction that permits the Kitaev spin liquid to protrude from the pure ferromagnetic Kitaev limit under a magnetic field. This generic model captures a field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid, and displays strong anisotropy of field effects. A wide regime of non-Abelian anyon Kitaev spin liquid is predicted when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the honeycomb plane.
